Host Michael Rand starts with a bit of a curious rant about the flexibility MLB managers seem to crave when it comes to carrying a third catcher. It was a popular thing during Ron Gardenhire's time with the Twins, and now it seems Rocco Baldelli has been inflicted with the virus. Plus Rand looks at some fresh reports about Aaron Rodgers and the Vikings. 10:00: Star Tribune writer Randy Johnson joins Rand on three subjects: Gophers football, which begins spring practice this week; Gophers men's hockey, which awaits its NCAA fate; and Gophers wrestling. 27:00: An opportunity for the Wild, Wolves and Gophers women's hockey.

Introduction: Ejections were the norm during the Ron Gardenhire era, as the Twins manager either led the American League outright or tied for the league lead in ejections every year from 2006-2011. Rocco Baldelli has tended to be much more mild-mannered, but lately he has been positively Gardy-esque. On Tuesday he was ejected for the second time this month and fourth time this season after being tossed just six times combined in his first three seasons as a manager. 7:00: Star Tribune columnist Chip Scoggins joins host Michael Rand for a look at Byron Buxton and another stint on the injured list and thoughts on the Vikings' acquisition of Nick Mullens as their presumed backup quarterback. 28:00: Mullens met with the media on Tuesday and vowed to be focused on the task at hand.

Aaron and John discuss the additions of Cesar Tovar, Ron Gardenhire and Dan Gladden to the Twins Hall of Fame, along with where "prospects plus" rank in the prospect hierarchy and the disturbing lack of absolutes present in following a career path.
This may have been a new low in the Baldelli era: The Twins lose three of four at home against the sub-.500 Rangers. David rails against Rocco Baldelli's management of the pitching staff, and they wonder whether they'd be better off with Ron Gardenhire (in his prime) managing this team. They also discuss the Twins' spat of injuries to Luis Arraez, Alex Kirilloff and (gasp) Byron Buxton; the team's solid starting pitching; and whether it's time to shake up the bullpen. We're back with a look at a whole lot of fun action, and a few sour notes, from MLB's opening week. We'll start with Tigers talk. Miggy in the snow. The legend of Akil Baddoo. A pretty good first six outings for the rotation. Michael Fulmer as reliever. And then we'll get into the new brand of baseball A.J. Hinch is preaching, and whether he'll stick to his guns, and fold after a few mistakes the way Brad Ausmus and Ron Gardenhire did. Then we'll take the second half to look around the league at the many, many interesting stories we've already gotten out of the young 2021 season. We'll take Nick Castellanos and his quest to become swag incarnate. Jose Iglesias' ludicrous highlight reel so far with the Angels. The glory of two-way Shohei Ohtani, and much more, before our attention finally turns to Trevor Bauer, as it so often does. We'll discuss MLB seizing Bauer's sticky balls, the whole concept of making this illegal, and why Bauer may have simply dug his own grave and then handed Rob Manfred the shovel here. With spring camp underway and Mr. Stavenhagen, the Tigers reporter for The Athletic Detroit, days away from a flight to lovely Lakeland Florida to cover them, he joins us for a preseason conversation about the 2021 Detroit Tigers. This is a pretty wide-ranging, state-of-the-organization conversation, but we start off discussing some of the interesting small scale additions like Nomar Mazara and Julio Teheran while also lamenting the lack of any major moves this offseason. The 2021 Tigers do feel different as AJ Hinch and his coaching staff make their presence felt, and Cody talks about the contrasts with Ron Gardenhire's staff, but we appear set for another year in a holding pattern hoping for a lot of player development. We talk through the pitching staff and what constitutes progress in another season where the team is largely treading water. The need for the young pitching prospects to start establishing themselves is very clear as well. Finally, we consider the farm system and the meager depth in mid-tier prospects, particularly on the pitching side, that informed the Tigers collection of veterans they'll invite to camp on minor league deals. Finally we discuss a few key players and our hopes for a farm system that needs to show major improvement in 2021. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Doogie has the latest on the Twins' pursuit of more pitching, when the Gopher Pro Bowl is happening, and the local Super Bowl ratings dipping from 2020 along with additional notes. Minneapolis native Elerson Smith recaps the Senior Bowl and look ahead to the NFL Draft (7:08), former Twins manager Ron Gardenhire joins the show (30:18), Bryce Dixon, Nelson Cruz's agent, discusses his client's recent signing with the Twins (46:26), and Caleb Truax reviews his fight and chats about his future (1:16:43).
The Athletic's Cody Stavenhagen and Tim McMaster react to the news that the Tigers are close to hiring A.J. Hinch as the club's new manager. Hinch represents a big change in direction for Detroit after the retirement of Ron Gardenhire. How will the team manage the optics of hiring Hinch days after his suspension for his role in the Astros sign stealing scandal ended? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
The Detroit Tigers season is over, and there were some positive early season signs before the club tailed off towards the end of the season. Now the team's rebuild will include a search for a new manager. Ron Gardenhire's tenure with the team is over, choosing to retire rather than wait to find out whether he would be back, to focus on his health. Which direction should the Tigers go in their search for a new manager? Also how is the rebuilding process going under general manager Al Avila the executive vice president of baseball operations and general manager of the Detroit Tigers? Jake Riepma is a Sports Talk Host, Sports Update Anchor, & Producer at 97.1 The Ticket WXYT & WWJ News Radio 950. He joined me this week, to discuss the Tigers managerial search and the state of the franchise. You can follow Jake on Twitter @jake_riepma
10-1-2020 Passed Ball Show. John opens up this show by reminding his listeners that his last show sucked. He then talks about the value of a Head Coach in the National Football League and how it contrasts with a Major League Baseball manager. He then gives three reasons a NFL Head Coach could reasonably be fired in season. He then talks about the Detroit Tigers decision to promote coach Lloyd McClendon to interim manager after the retirement of Ron Gardenhire. McClendon is the first black manager in the history of the Tigers franchise, which leaves ten MLB teams who have yet to hire. John advocates for McClendon getting the full time title starting next season. He finishes off the program talking about prejudices and how it is assumed that blacks live in poverty and how it is prejudice to use that as a reason there are less in professional baseball. John then mentions fans that would not give up their rooting interests for their sports teams because they have a black player on the team. Yet these are the same people who have decided not to watch their favorite sports team because of the sport(s) support to Black Lives Matter. At this point, John’s show immediately ends after his camera is attacked by a flying Chicken Cow.
