Hey, Scorekeepers! On our off weeks for the next few months, we're revisiting ART CLASS, the 12-episode series all about arts and arts education that we released last year. We hope you enjoy this stroll down memory lane!--This episode was originally released on January 30, 2024.Welcome back, Classmates! And thank you so much for joining us for episode 2 of Lincoln Center's ART CLASS! This week is all about preserving the legacy of Black art and culture, specifically Black music. COVID-19 and the murder of George Floyd in 2020 brought about a racial reckoning here in the US, the likes of which hadn't been seen in decades. In 2024, however, with the conservative backlash against progressive ideals and initiatives like Critical Race Theory and DEI gaining momentum in many places, it seems the pendulum has swung hard back in the other direction. This week, we talk with two scholars and artists working tirelessly to keep Black stories, Black culture, and Black art at the forefront of the national imagination. First, we chat with Dr. Michael C. Mason, PhD the first chair of the new Africana Studies Department at the Berklee College of Music, all about the creation of this exciting new program at one of the most prestigious music schools in the country (0:26:37). And later, Paige sits down with Christopher Fuller, the creator of the Black Music Project, for the first installment of their series, Kinfolk (0:57:49). They talk all about how this invaluable repository of Black history and art came to be and make the case that the story of Black music is the story of American music. All that plus, the Morning Announcements with Emile (0:54:52) and a bit of Pure Black Joy (1:32:06) to get you through the rest of the week. Originally aired January 16, 2024.What's up, Classmates?! Class is officially in session! Welcome to the first episode of ART CLASS, a provocative, thoughtful and often humorous podcast all about art and artists creating at the intersection of beauty and innovation. This week, hosts Lee Bynum, Paige Reynolds, and Rocky Jones are joined by author, activist, and multi-disciplinary artist Junauda Petrus, whose novel The Stars and the Blackness Between Them, has appeared on multiple banned books lists in the past few years. We talk art and censorship, other influential, inspirational artists who have also showed up on banned book lists, and how Junauda's West Indian ancestry influences her life and work. Later, we're joined for "Career Day" by Nathan Horowitz, who gives us behind-the-scenes peek at a day in the life of a Hollywood stunt performer. Plus, contributor Emilia Mettenbrink brings us the "Morning Announcements," a list of live and virtual arts offerings that we think you might want to check out. And, as always, we end with a moment of PBJ aka Pure Black Joy, a weekly little snack for your soul that highlights the Black people, culture, and art that are making us happy this week. Well, hey there, Scorekeepers! Have the last few weeks got you feeling scared? Anxious? Overwhelmed? Well, much like any rational, thinking human being living in 2025, we are feeling that way too. So we thought about it and figured that one thing that we could do is bring a little bit of joy into the proceedings, because even in these darkest of times, it's important to remember there's still joy to be had. So ladies and germs, we're doing an episode-long edition of Pure Black Joy! All episode we will be highlighting the beautiful Black people, art, and culture that are making a positive difference vis-à-vis our mental health. It's a new year and we're bringing you a new season with a new host! Today Mauricio is entertaining a very special guest – Vanessa Zoltan. Maybe you've head of her? Vanessa is reflecting on what she wants for 2025 and is wondering whether she should take an art class this year. Art used to be a big part of her life and she misses it! But does she truly have the motivation to leave the house regularly, especially in the evening when she could be resting? --This show is completely funded by Patreon, and we are so grateful to our supporters who make it possible. We finally went to "Art Class" this week and watched "Terrifier" from 2016. Here at SlashU we try to educate you on the cheesy, campy, and sometimes forgotten slasher/horror movies. But I think it's safe to say this one is on everyone's radar these days. So it's not very forgotten, however it still fits the mold of cheesy/campy. But it breaks the mold when it comes to gore effects. And with Art the Clown providing the creepiest of killers as a backdrop, we had lots of fun breaking down this beauty of a movie. Give it a listen and tell us what you think.Follow us on Instagram @SlashU_PodcastCheck out the Facebook page tooEmail us at SlashUPodcast@gmail.comSupport the show at SlashUPodcast.comThanks to ZapPlat.com for our Sound FX Hosted on Acast. Upstairs from the new cafe is another busy space. Every Monday, there's a 12 Neighbours art class. Bev Christiansen is a Community Facilitator and one of her responsibilities is to teach that class. Jeanne Armstrong spoke to her and Ashley Chapman, one of the students.
Growing up, Joanne Robinson was creatively encouraged in primary school and loved to draw for hours at home. However, her passion for art was dampened when she entered secondary school and was told by an art teacher that she wasn't very good. This negative feedback led Joanne to believe that she didn't have a talent for art, and she abandoned her artistic pursuits. Joanne joined the Royal Air Force and years later, while recuperating with a broken back, learned to paint and rediscovered her love for art.Joanne learnt that drawing and painting can be taught, and the importance of practice. Just like musicians are encouraged to practice regularly to improve their craft, artists also need to dedicate time and effort to honing their skills. Joanne's initial motivation to start The Little Art School stemmed from her own experience of how drawing and painting changed her life. She wanted to provide the same opportunity for others who may have doubted their abilities. By offering structured classes for both children and adults, Joanne and her business partner Melissa created a space where individuals could learn and grow at their own pace. In this episode of "Truth in This Art," host Rob Lee engages with Baltimore artist Tommy Mitchell in a rich discussion about the intricacies of being a self-taught artist. Mitchell shares his journey from admiration to participation in the art world, emphasizing the importance of evolution and ambition. He reflects on early influences, such as his father's encouragement, and the impact of his athletic background on his artistic discipline and work ethic. The conversation explores themes in Mitchell's art, his creative process, and the balance between artistic expression and business efficiency. He discusses the inspiration he draws from sports legends and the competitive drive to excel and innovate in his field. Mitchell also touches on the challenges of time management and the labor-intensive nature of his work, revealing his dedication to his craft and his desire to share his vision and ideas with the world.
You've always admired those Guilin paintings. You know the ones... winding river, limestone mountains... with the pagoda up on the right and that bamboo raft floating by in the foreground. If you give a dog a paintbrush… Art Class is on the menu for this episode of 1H1D! The “Surprise Me” button has chosen the indie adventure game developed by Greg Lobanov and published by Finji, and thus our hosts must spend an hour exploring the colorful title. This may not be the first game where Tom and Chris need to bring color back to a desaturated world, but it is the first one starring a dog with an oversized paintbrush. With that key feature in mind, it will be interesting to see how the game's painting mechanics handle on a controller. If that makes you curious or you have other questions about this cute indie game… press play to hear Tom and Chris discuss their favorite foods and why that may not be the best option when naming your dog! If you are an artist or identify as a creative of any kind, chances are you should probably consider how to start you first online art class. It can be a scary process that makes you question yourself, but it can also be one of the most profitable things you can do. Amy is also the host of the top ranked podcast Marketing Made Simple. This episode is packed with plenty of goodies for you to digest and get started. Biggest Mistakes of First Time Course Creators: Not growing your email list ASAP Giving everything you know away at once, producing overwhelm Waiting too long to get started Amy gets into the heart of the matter and breaks down how to market to your audience. What a good advertising budget is for different stages, and how much you can charge for 3 different types of classes, all of which she explains in detail. Even with all of these components being planned, it's still easy to sit back with imposter syndrome wondering why anyone would want to pay for an online art class from you. Amy gives you 3 super reasons why people want and need an art class from you specifically. “There is absolutely a way to get your skill set and your talents into a digital course and reach far more people than you ever would in an in person workshop.” - Amy Porterfield If you haven't begun building your online course yet, Amy warns that you need to start building your email list and prioritize it in your plans. Social media is fickle and can be in your favor one day and against you the next day because of algorithms. Amy's emphasis is that you at least own your email list. “If you only build your business on social media, you are building it on rented land.” - Amy Porterfield Links Mentioned in the Episode: Amy's Free Guide The Inspiration Place with Amy Porterfield Episode 88 Apron Avant Garde Guide to Build and sell your first online art class Ciara Gilmore Aggie Armstrong For full show notes, go to schulmanart.com/212 ++++++++++++++++++++
