We're diving headfirst into high-flying mayhem with Con Air, a chaotic symphony of explosions, one-liners, and mid-air madness—handpicked by our awesome Patreon supporter Susan from the Geek Girl Soup podcast!Con Air (1997) was born out of the mid-90s action movie boom, with producer Jerry Bruckheimer riding high from previous hits like The Rock and Crimson Tide. Wanting to blend testosterone-fueled chaos with a high-concept premise, Bruckheimer and the team crafted a story about a maximum-security prisoner transport gone wildly off the rails. The script, written by Scott Rosenberg, was inspired in part by a real federal program, but the film quickly ditched realism in favor of bombast and explosions. Simon West, a former music video director making his feature debut, was brought on to direct, bringing a flashy style that matched Bruckheimer's over-the-top vision. The production faced major challenges, especially with the practical effects and large set pieces involving planes, crashes, and convicts with very short fuses. Shot primarily in Utah and Nevada, including sequences at the infamous "Boneyard" in the Mojave Desert, the film used a combination of real aircraft, full-scale models, and miniature effects. Despite the logistical headaches, Con Air brought together a ludicrously stacked cast including Nicolas Cage, John Malkovich, Steve Buscemi, and Ving Rhames. Cage famously trained with DEA agents and adopted a Southern accent for his role — choices that added to the movie's now-iconic (and deeply memeable) legacy. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, so become a supporter.www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesbackTrailer Guy Plot SummaryIn a world where justice is served on wings of chaos, Con Air follows newly paroled Army Ranger Cameron Poe, who just wants to get home to his wife and daughter—but finds himself trapped on a high-security prisoner transport flight hijacked by some of the most dangerous criminals in America. With time running out and a plane full of maniacs soaring toward disaster, Poe must fight from the inside to stop the carnage, clear his name, and maybe deliver a heartfelt bunny rabbit along the way. Buckle up—this flight's going down in action-packed, slow-mo glory.thevhsstrikesback@gmail.comhttps://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback

This is followed by a chat with Simon West, the director of the iconic '90s Nicolas Cage pic, Con Air and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider starring Angelina Jolie. Martin Campbell discusses his new film, Cleaner, a high-rise action pic starring Star Wars star, Daisy Ridley and Clive Owen. We not only talk about the practicalities of making an action film, but we also cover 30 years of Goldeneye, the legacy of the James Bond franchise, as well as why we haven't had a belated second sequel to his brilliant 1998 film, The Mask Of Zorro, starring Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones. This was my third time interviewing the great Simon West, so we had great fun talking about keeping interviews fresh, as well as his new comedic action film, Old Guy. Shot and set in Belfast, the film stars the eclectic combination of Christoph Waltz, Cooper Hoffman and Lucy Liu. Simon talks about filming in Belfast and why he was so eager to ditch the stereotype of Northern Ireland's violent past and shoot the province as a contemporary European location.

It's Die Hard on a prison plane!(you can watch this week's episode on YouTube!)This week, Phil ‘Philly Bedlam' Gawthorne and Liam ‘The Coliseum' Billingham take a high-security flight on CON AIR with special guest Scout Tafoya, aka ‘The Massachusetts Mangler'!After serving a long and harsh sentence for a self-defense killing, parolee and ex-Army Ranger Cameron Poe (Nicolas Cage) travels on a prisoner transport plane nicknamed ‘Con Air', to meet with his wife and daughter. But when said plane is taken over by vicious criminal mastermind Cyrus ‘The Virus' Grissom (John Malkovich) and his bloodthirsty cohorts, Poe finds himself unable to abandon his friend Baby-O (Mykelti Williamson) and vulnerable female Prison Guard Sally Bishop (Rachel Ticotin), and decides to fight back against the vicious convicts, with the help of unconventional US Marshal Vince Larkin (John Cusack), who assists his efforts from the ground. As CON AIR is one of the best and most iconic ‘DIE HARD ON A [BLANK]' films ever made, this is one of our biggest, and most substantive, episodes yet. The guys start out by discussing the origins of these kind of cinematic stories, going all the way back to movies such as STAGECOACH, before digging in on the film's plentiful ‘Die Hard DNA'. They go deep on the film's themes, meanings, and aspirations, and discuss how its politics and portrayals have aged, for better or worse, in the intervening decades since its summer 1997 release. They talk in detail about the three principle stars – Nicolas Cage, John Cusack and John Malkovich – as well as the rest of the stellar supporting cast, along with producer Jerry Bruckheimer, director Simon West, and writer Scott Rosenberg. Events culminate with a highly contested edition of the ‘Die Hard Oscars', and a criminally tough ‘Double Jeopardy' trivia quiz! CHRISTOPHER LAWRENCE (Costume Designer) drew inspiration for his design career while putting together looks for he and his dance partner on the beloved “American Bandstand.” He then started working at the trendy boutique Camp Beverly Hills where he began cultivating a clientele of actors, directors and, most importantly, Costume Designers. Christopher caught his first break in the wardrobe department on two iconic television series, “Moonlighting” and “Pee Wee's Playhouse.” He then decided that designing feature films was his true passion, and he quickly developed relationships with some of the world's most celebrated Designers such as Ellen Mirojnick and Albert Wolsky. Before he knew it, Christopher had created his path in features, working on such films as “City Slickers,” “Beaches” and “Bugsy,” the latter of which garnered the Academy Award® for Best Costume Design. Christopher came up through the ranks in the wardrobe department and quickly became one of the industry's top Costume Supervisors. In 1999, Michael Mann recognized Christopher's talent and promoted him to Associate Costume Designer on “The Insider” (Al Pacino, Russell Crowe), and Christopher has been designing films ever since. Some of the credits that followed were “The Anniversary Party” (Gwyneth Paltrow, Kevin Kline), “Showtime” (Robert De Niro, Eddie Murphy) and “S.W.A.T.” (Colin Farrell, Samuel L. Jackson). Christopher has become a favorite of Jason Statham, having designed “The Mechanic,” “Cellular” and “Crank” and is a longtime collaborator with film director Simon West, most notably on the Capital One “What's In Your Wallet?” Viking campaign, which won the Costume Designers Guild Award - Best Commercial Costume Design. Christopher teamed up yet again with Michael Mann on two additional projects, including the feature film “Texas Killing Fields” (starring Sam Worthington, Jessica Chastain and Chloe Grace Moretz). Christopher served as costume designer on the Jennifer Aniston film, “Management,” and from sketch to fabric he designed all of Miley Cyrus' Hannah Montana costumes for “Hannah Montana: The Movie,” from which dolls, Halloween costumes and sportswear were created for the tween market. “The Space Between Us” reunites Christopher with director Peter Chelsom who directed the Hannah Montana movie. Christopher was the costume designer for the first three seasons of the popular Showtime series “Ray Donovan,” for which he was twice nominated for a Costume Designers Guild award. It was his fifth nomination, having won twice for his commercial work. Recently, he was the Costume Designer for Bill Burr's OLD DADS.

Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

If Michael Bay movies are orange juice, "Con Air" is orange-juice concentrate—loaded with stars, explosions and plot holes. What else would you expect from Shat The Movies commissioner extraordinaire Frank F? Simon West's directorial debut had the Shat Crew scratching their heads. The geography makes no sense. The crime makes no sense. The courts make no sense. Even prison had Dick and Gene confounded.  But there was no mystery to the entertainment factor of this summer blockbuster. Cartoon bad guys, over-the-top action sequences and some of 1997's hottest actors make "Con Air" a standout movie ... even if it isn't a particularly good one. Born To Watch - A Movie Podcast

Welcome back to another episode of the Born to Watch podcast! This week, we're strapping in and taking off with a deep dive into the 1997 high-flying action thriller Con Air. Directed by Simon West, this film not only encapsulates the excess of the late ‘90s action cinema but also serves as a showcase for Nicholas Cage's wild-eyed heroics and a cast of characters that feel ripped straight from a comic book.Con Air follows Cameron Poe, a former U.S. Army Ranger, played by Nicholas Cage with his trademark volatile charm. Poe is sentenced to prison for manslaughter after defending his wife in a brawl. On the day of his parole, he boards a transport plane filled with some of the nation's most notorious criminals, who hijack the plane in a bid for freedom. The film brilliantly crafts its narrative around Poe's struggle to reconcile his desire to reunite with his family and his inherent need to do the right thing, even under the most extreme circumstances. The film is renowned for its over-the-top action sequences, which are both spectacular and utterly preposterous. Simon West directs these scenes with a palpable energy and manages to keep the adrenaline pumping from start to finish. The infamous plane crash scene in Las Vegas is particularly notable, combining grandiose destruction with a cheeky sense of humour that almost winks at the audience amidst the chaos.Cinematography in Con Air is a spectacle of its own. Director of Photography, David Tattersall, captures the confined chaos of the airborne prison with claustrophobic close-ups and frenetic camera movements that match the film's manic energy. The transition from the gritty, earthy tones of the prison sequences to the bright, neon-lit Vegas finale paints a visual journey that mirrors Poe's turbulent flight towards freedom. However, Con Air is not just a mindless action flick; it's a character-driven narrative that thrives on its eclectic cast. John Malkovich plays Cyrus "The Virus" Grissom, a cunning and ruthless criminal mastermind whose calm demeanour belies his violent tendencies. His chilling and charismatic performance provides a perfect foil to Cage's morally inclined hero. The dynamic between these two, along with a host of other colourful characters played by the likes of Ving Rhames, Danny Trejo, and Steve Buscemi, adds layers to the narrative, making it more than just a series of explosive events.Steve Buscemi's character, Garland Greene, deserves a special mention. Despite limited screen time, Buscemi delivers a memorable performance that oscillates between creepy and comically absurd, especially during his serene moment in a deserted pool, surrounded by a suburban idyll. This scene is a brilliant contrast to the otherwise relentless pace and provides a darkly comic reflection on the nature of freedom and the American dream.Con Air also touches on themes of redemption and the American justice system, albeit in a hyperbolic fashion. Cameron Poe's journey is emblematic of personal redemption, as he seeks a second chance from the legal system and his conscience. The film questions the nature of justice through its characters, each revealing different facets of criminality and penance. From a cultural standpoint, Con Air arrived at a time when action films were dominated by larger-than-life heroes and improbable plots. It reflects a period in Hollywood where escapism was often achieved through the sheer force of spectacle. Yet, despite its bombastic exterior, the film manages to embed a sense of humanity in its narrative, making it resonate with audiences even decades later.Con Air has achieved a cult status in terms of its influence on pop culture, remembered fondly for its quotable lines, memorable characters, and unabashed embrace of action movie tropes. It's a film that wears its absurdity on its sleeve and is all the better for it. Its impact can be seen in how it has shaped the genre, paving the way for action films that blend humour, heart, and heroics in equal measure. To wrap up, Con Air is a quintessential ‘90s action movie that delivers thrills, laughs, and a surprising amount of heart. It's a film that knows exactly what it is and who it's for, making no apologies for its excesses. For fans of high-octane action and cinematic spectacle, Con Air provides a satisfying watch that's as entertaining today as it was when it first hit the big screen.Join us next week as we continue to explore films that entertain and leave a mark on our culture and hearts. Until then, keep your seatbelts fastened and prepare for landing because, as Cameron Poe would say, "Why couldn't you put the bunny back in the box?"

I'd be a Scrooge McDuck over here.If there's anyone in the world who could dive headlong into that terrible situation and survive it, that would be one of the finest actors of any generation: Nicolas Freaking Cage. This may not be peak Cage, but it's pretty dang close to the madness that will come. The video game movie genre is experiencing a renaissance. Traditionally, cinema has heavily influenced the production of video games. Games like Resident Evil and Metal Gear Solid are evidence of this. As video games have become more cinematic on their own, the sentiment around video game-influenced movies has increased. Shows like The Last Of Us and the upcoming Super Mario Brothers movie are garnering more interest from the masses than any game-inspired IP before them. Today, the guys are covering two female-led video game films: Resident Evil and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. Kyle, Drew, and Phile had a mighty fine time drawing from their love of video games for this matchup. FILM SUMMARIESResident EvilBased on the popular video game, Milla Jovovich and Michelle Rodriguez star as the leaders of a commando team who must break into "the hive," a vast underground genetics laboratory operated by the powerful Umbrella Corporation. There, a deadly virus has been unleashed, killing the lab's personnel and resurrecting them as the evil Un-dead. The team has just three hours to shut down the lab's supercomputer and close the facility before the virus threatens to overrun the Earth.Genre: Horror, ActionOriginal Language: EnglishDirector: Paul W.S. PLUS: A surprising edition of a popular show segment!  The Expendables 2 stars Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Liam Hemsworth, Nan Yu, Randy Couture, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Terry Crews, Scott Adkins, Charisma Carpenter, and Chuck Norris as 'Booker'; directed by Simon West.
