In this episode, I have a conversation with Gilly Ryan, who is a client of mine who just finished the last group round of my Confident Equestrian Program (CEP). I really wanted to have her on the podcast because her journey inside CEP was jam-packed, full of lessons and experiences to learn from. Not only did these lessons help her to strengthen her relationship with her horse, but they also helped her as a teacher with her students and also as a partner to her husband. Together we chat about: An overview of Gilly's journey with horses from the start Her horse Yes and how he has taught her what a true yes and no means Her journey inside CEP Boundaries and holding space for our horses and how that ripples out into other areas of our life Navigating illness with loved ones and supporting them through it whilst honouring your own process And so much more. Anette visits with Pascale Charlot, the Managing Director of the College Excellence Program (CEP) at the Aspen Institute. Amarillo College was just selected as the top college along with Imperial Valley College, both co-winners of the Aspen Prize for College Excellence. Lots of good information is shared as Anette and Pascale discuss the award and the benefits of community colleges.Pascale is a visionary and outcomes-driven leader deeply committed to student success. An alumna of Aspen's year-long Rising President Fellowship, Pascale plays a lead role in crafting and overseeing CEP's strategy to develop a network of transformational college presidents who share a relentless commitment to advancing excellence and equity in student outcomes. Chief among these programs are Aspen's Presidential Fellowships, which have graduated over 100 presidents of community colleges that together educate over a million-and-a-half students. In the Fellowships and across CEP's work, Pascale helps lead efforts to strengthen the inexorable connection between institutional reform and student success.Prior to joining CEP, Pascale was at Aspen Prize-winning Miami Dade College, where she most recently served as president of the Kendall campus, the largest of the college's eight. Pascale was also dean of Miami Dade's highly regarded Honors College, where she developed and implemented a pathways strategy that increased the number of first-generation students who went on to attain a bachelor's degree. Herself a transfer student, Pascale brings substantial expertise to one of Aspen's core priorities: advancing post-graduation outcomes for students of color and low-income students. Demonstrable student learning, equitable talent development, and social mobility for students and families are key levers that inspire Pascale's student-centered approach.A graduate of Duke University and the University of Michigan Law School, Pascale also held leadership roles at both New York University and Rutgers law schools earlier in her career.A link to the process of selecting the Aspen Prize winner can be found here.Episode produced by Darwin Carlisle. How are you today? I'm good, Chuck. How are you? I'm doing well. Could you please let listeners know a little bit about yourself, your company, and, and your role? Lauren Ahrens: Yeah, for sure. So I'm Lauren. I lead global recruiting for a company called H1. We're a Series C startup focused on global healthcare data. Lauren Ahrens: We actually have a software platform that speeds decision making and insights for users in life sciences and pharmaceutical industries and so forth. And I've been in recruiting for the last 10 plus years, focused mostly on building data and technology enabled recruiting teams and building great candidate experiences. Chuck Solomon: Awesome. What got you started in working in this talent space? Lauren Ahrens: Yeah. Honestly, I really recognized it was, it's interesting, it was actually 2008 when mm-hmm. You know, the, the first sort of first real economic crisis I had right. Of my own personal career. Right. And I was working for a financial services startup at the time. Lauren Ahrens: And what I noticed is that there were a lot of very unseasoned managers who really struggled to sort of keep a lid on their stress and noticed how it influenced their team somewhat negatively. And I sort of became very kind of hyper aware of how hiring decisions impacted the culture of a company. Lauren Ahrens: Sure. Super important to me. Not just the candidate experience, but also how it leads into the employee experience. And I wanted a hand in helping shape that. Chuck Solomon: That's great. I asked that same question of all my guests and I, it is the same question, but I get really unique answers. I think not, not once have I had someone say, well, I was in high school and my guidance counselor said, you should be a recruiter. Lauren Ahrens: A recruiter. I went to college and got a degree in recruiting. Said no recruiting leader ever. That's right everyone, it's draft season! So, CEP has decided to get in on the fun. To build our own car companies, we'll choose from the best the automotive "universities" (read: existing car companies) have to offer, both domestic and international. Give us a listen today and give us a draft grade! Did we waste any picks? Score any late-draft wunderkinds? Or did we miss something you think should have been an obvious pick? How are you this afternoon? Dustin Laycock Hey. Doing great. Doing great. How are you? Chuck Solomon I'm well. Can you let our listeners know a little bit about yourself and your current role and a little bit about the company you work for? Dustin Laycock Yeah. First off, thanks for. Thanks for having me. Sure. This is definitely something I'm really passionate about and I love talking about. So I was happy to jump at this opportunity. Yeah. So my name is Dustin Laycock. I have been an accidental recruiter for going on 14 years now. I currently work for a company called Zillow. Zillow is really more of a more of a scale up and a startup. I mean, we've been around ten years, so I feel like we're kind of further along on that maturity curve, but we're still smaller. We're about 55 people today, and what we do is that we enable front line workers or desk workers through communication solutions such as Push-to-talk. So we're really big on helping out of all types of industries. We're not industry specific. One cool thing that we do do is we offer our platform for free to first responders. And in fact, last year I think we gave out something around $3.2 million worth of free licenses to first responders. So. Before this. Chuck Solomon Yeah. That's awesome though, that you're that you're doing that. I mean, anything that supports first responders is is really good in my book. “The idea of expertise and expert judgment has been around and has been something that society depends upon for a long time, but there have been no serious empirical explorations of who's an expert, what a domain of expertise is, and what sort of frailties are experts susceptible to. Those things haven't been addressed in an empirical way until the last 30 years. Some of this work began in the fifties with Kahneman and Tversky. They began to explore the things that make people misjudge risky situations, and that led to a body of research on who makes good judgments and under what circumstances for things that might affect us in various ways. But these were typically judgments about the probabilities of events and the magnitudes of the consequences. There's a domain in which we use experts to make judgments about future events, the quantities of things that we will see at some time in the future, or things that currently exist, but we don't know what they are. We don't have time yet, to compile the data that we need, and we rely on expert judgments in law courts, but also relied on them for example, we have a new disease like COVID, and we didn't know yet its transmission rates and yet we have to guess at its transmission rates to make judgments about how best to manage the population to protect ourselves. And we rely on expert judgments of all of those circumstances. And yet we don't know who the best expert is. Who should we ask? Is it the best-credentialed person? Is it the person that most people trust? If you ask two experts and you get two opinions, which one should you use? And so on and so forth. Now, that has been the focus of research over the last 10 or 15 years, and I've learned some really important things that run contrary to our intuition about some of those things.”Mark Burgman is Director of the Centre for Environmental Policy at Imperial College London and Editor-in-Chief of the journal Conservation Biology. He is author of Trusting Judgments: How to Get the Best Out of Experts. Previously, he was Adrienne Clarke Chair of Botany at the University of Melbourne, Australia. He has written models for biosecurity, medicine regulation, marine fisheries, forestry, irrigation, electrical power utilities, mining, and national park planning. He received a BSc from the University of New South Wales, an MSc from Macquarie University, Sydney, and a PhD from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He worked as a consultant ecologist and research scientist in Australia, the United States and Switzerland during the 1980's before joining the University of Melbourne in 1990.
