This week, Miguel spoke to Dr. Jennifer McClearen (@jmcclearen), a feminist media scholar whose research examines sports, difference, and consumer culture. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Sports, Media, and Culture in the Department of Radio-Television-Film at the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. McClearen published her first book, Fighting Visibility: Sports Media and Female Athletes in the UFC, with the Studies in Sports Media Series with the University of Illinois Press in March 2021. First, Miguel asked Dr. McClearen about the Millennial Sports Media Brand and how the UFC leveraged the early days of blogs and social media to market their product. Additionally, Miguel and Dr. McClearen broke down how the UFC uses the myth of the American dream and protestant work ethic to get their fighters to buy into the UFC neoliberal business model. Dr. McClearen explains how it harms female fighters, and in particular, non-white female UFC fighters. Miguel also asked Dr. McClearen about the relationship between the UFC and the gig economy, the push by former UFC fighter Leslie Smith to unionize UFC fighters, plus more. Note: Originally recorded on July 22, 2021, before the cancellation of Nunes vs. Pena at UFC 265. Next, Miguel gives you his Molotov MVP for episode 25, current Bellator MMA fighter Leslie Smith. Finally, Miguel ends the podcast with another Chicana/o Sports History segment. This week, he does something slightly different and highlights Unite Here Local 2 and the San Francisco Giants/Oracle Park concession workers, who voted to authorize a strike on September 4, 2021. Miguel Garcia produced this episode. Sports As A Weapon is now part of the @Anticonquista Collective Network. Check out Anticonquista on YouTube and on Instagram! NOTE: Originally published 9 September 2019 Anyone that is just finding the NFT space or the metaverse will get a lot out of this episode. Recorded nearly two years ago, Rizzle and I discuss our very early experiences interacting with blockchain-based virtual worlds like Cryptovoxels and Decentraland (of course introduced to us from the legendary metaverse pioneer himself, Connie Digital) and our feelings on the burgeoning cryptoart and NFT space at the time. Below you can see the original show description in all its vintage glory: "In the first episode of season two, @matthew is joined by new co-host @rizzle. The two dive right into discussions about CryptoArt, CryptoVoxels, and the future of digital art by pulling on the real-life examples of fellow Cent users like: @n0shot, @javo, @Coldie3D, @skeenee, @mattiaC, @mlibty, @spontanert, @LoveArtHate, @pet3rpan, and of course @connie."
Jen joins her brother from another Illinois mother - actor, writer, Second City teacher, and Game Show Network Get a Clue & Daily Draw host Rob Belushi - for a fun Heat, Tombstone, and Scorsese movie quote filled wide ranging discussion about their mutual film obsessions, unputdownable books and the authors who wrote them, the great Joe Pesci, creative friends, Kurt Russell, and Rachel Maddow.Note: Originally posted on Patreon (4/16/20) with links here.Theme Music: Solo Acoustic Guitar by Jason Shaw, Free Music Archive
Boom Radio features a throwback episode of one of its' regular shows at 8pm EST on Tuesday nights.
Laurie & Matt try to contain their apocalyptic notions while discussing this episode's essential question, "Are Cellphones Ruining Teenagers?" Matt kicks off the show trying to find a spot at school for each student to connect in "If I Was Principal," and Laurie riffs on the connection between teacher and classroom in "That's the Beauty of it All." Show music courtesy of Brian Karmelich of VirtualCampfire.net. Visit TeacherSavesWorld.com for more details. NOTE: Originally recorded as episode 10, but renamed afterwards and recording left as is. At the top of the show, Laurie & Matt discuss their journey with intermittent fasting, and how their first ever podcast was actually as co-guests on Gin Stephens' podcast "Intermittent Fasting Stories." If you'd like to listen to that episode, it's #68. You can visit GinStephens.com and IntermittentFastingStories.com to find out more.
Laurie & Matt balance out last week's episode by sharing the ten student types that make them the happiest by answering this episode's essential question, "What Students Bring Us Joy?" Laurie shares a way for principals to connect with their fellow educational leaders in "If I Was Principal," and Matt closes out the show sharing a good use for our extra time in "That's the Beauty of it All." Show music courtesy of Brian Karmelich and VirtualCampfire.net. Visit TeacherSavesWorld.com for more details. NOTE: Originally recorded as episode 9. We changed the number afterwards but left the recording as is because flaws make us unique. Re-recording was just not something we wanted to tackle, either.
Laurie & Matt reveal the types of students that can cause their heart to sink and their blood pressure to rise with this episode's essential question, "What Students Drive Us Crazy?" Matt gets things rolling with a call for a uniform grading system in "If I Was Principal," and Laurie finds a way to insert squeezable tuna into a retelling of a dog's rescue in her "That's the Beauty of it All" finale. Show music provided by Brian Karmelich of VirtualCampfire.net fame. Visit TeacherSavesWorld.com for more details. NOTE: Originally recorded as episode 8 and then renamed later. We left the recording as is to increase its value, like a misprinted stamp.

Subject: Shaun Of The Dead (2004) Observers: John Pavlich, Tysto Record Date: October 27, 2012, 04:20 PM Plot Summary: A pair of slacker, man-children must take to action and grow up quickly when the United Kingdom is overrun with zombies. Note: Originally intended to close out this year's month-long tribute to Halloween and Horror films, Tysto returns to share in the comedic majesty of Edgar Wright's feature-length, directorial debut. We discuss differences between British and American cultures, the Horror-Comedy genre and how this film stacks up to other zombie films. Remember to listen for the preemptive countdown before starting the film on your DVD.
The idea that we join forces with others to do something bigger than ourselves, and that we might not live to see finished, seems kind of foreign to contemporary sensibilities. Yet we do sometimes have the chance to become a part of something that is larger than ourselves: perhaps our faith or a cause with which we devote ourselves, and we gain a satisfaction that is deep and lasting. Ensemble music can teach us much about this idea! [NOTE: Originally released 10/5/2008, this is a "rebroadcast" of one of my more popular episodes.]
