What would it be like if scholars presented their research in sound rather than in print? Better yet, what if we could hear them in the act of their research and analysis, pulling different historical sounds from the archives and rubbing them against one another in an audio editor? In today's episode, we get to find out what such an innovative scholarly audiobook would sound like–because our guest has created the first one! Jacob Smith‘s ESC (University of Michigan Press) is a fascinating sonic exploration of postwar radio drama and contemporary sound art, as well as a meditation on how humans have reshaped the ecological fate of the planet. Before we listen to an excerpt of ESC, Mack interviews Jake about how his skills as a former musician came in handy for his work as an audio academic. You can listen to ESC: Sonic Adventure in the Anthropocene in its entirety for free courtesy of the University of Michigan Press. You can also watch Jake's 90s band The Mysteries of Life perform in the “bad music video” Jake mentions or on Conan O'Brien. Jacob Smith is founder and director of the Master of Arts in Sound Arts and Industries, and professor in the Department of Radio/Television/Film at Northwestern University. Kenice Mobley and Alycia Cooper visit Friends Like Us and discuss the importance of understanding systemic issues in tax codes, Mayor Adam's attack on NYC Libraries, Biden Skewers The Orange man and more with host Marina Franklin!  Alycia Cooper Twenty-three year stand-up comic, Alycia Cooper, has always been a natural performer. A Washington DC area native, Alycia grew up in Seat Pleasant and later, Temple Hills, MD. She then went on to graduate from The University of Maryland at College Park with a Bachelor's of Arts degree in Radio-Television-Film and a minor in Theater. While in college, she fell in love with comedy by watching HBO's “Def Comedy Jam.” There, she saw people her age who reminded her of herself performing the funniest routines she had ever seen. They were raw and uncut, but most of all hilarious. After college, she worked at BET in Washington, DC as a music television producer. Years later, after having moved to Los Angeles in hopes of creating sitcoms, Alycia tried her hand in stand-up, and was bitten by the bug. She has been on NBC's “Last Comic Standing,” BET's “Comic View”, NBC's “America's Got Talent,” Nuvo TV's  “Stand Up & Deliver,” Byron Allen's “Comics Unleashed,” TV Guide's “Stand Up in Stilettos”, “Laff Mobb's Laugh Tracks” on Tru TV, “Coming to the Stage” on Apple TV, and TV One's “Who's Got Jokes,” to name a few. In addition to her stand-up, this comedy chameleon has appeared in the number one streaming movie on Netflix called, “Guest House” with Pauly Shore, the first scripted series on Facebook, “Loosely, Exactly Nicole,” and several network television shows; including “Kenan” on NBC, “The Parkers” on UPN, and “The Resident” on Fox where she acted alongside Morris Chestnut. She then went on to appear in a string of independent films, voiced several characters in The Oscar Award winning film, “Spiderman: Into the Spider-Verse,” all while having six top albums in heavy rotation on Sirius Satellite Radio and iTunes. She also has her own Pandora Station. You can also check out her latest special, “Alycia Cooper for President” on Tubi. Alycia has been featured in Essence Magazine as “One to Watch.” You can find her at “The World Famous Comedy Store” on Sunset Boulevard most weekends, where her name is displayed on the wall alongside the likes of Richard Pryor, George Carlin, Marsha Warfield, and Jerry Seinfeld. She has performed in over 40 countries while entertaining our courageous men and women in uniform. She is currently writing, directing, and producing films.  She has four critically acclaimed short films that have won awards in various festivals: “Trade”, “Just Us,” “Fat Stripper,” and her most recent comedy: “We Got Ours.” Kenice Mobley performs stand up comedy around the world and recently made her late-night debut on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. She appears regularly on SiriusXM and is a Finalist in the StandUp NBC Competition. This year, Kenice worked on the BET Awards and By Us For Us, a sketch comedy series presented by Color of Change. She hosts Complexify on ViceNews, Love About Town, an interview and relationship podcast, and Make Yourself Cry, available on Planet Scum.  Always hosted by Marina Franklin - One Hour Comedy Special: Single Black Female ( Amazon Prime, CW Network), TBS's The Last O.G, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, Hysterical on FX, The Movie Trainwreck, Louie Season V, The Jim Gaffigan Show, Conan O'Brien, Stephen Colbert, HBO's Crashing, and The Breaks with Michelle Wolf.

Brett William Mauser's journey from making casual short videos with friends during high school to becoming a celebrated filmmaker is both fascinating and inspiring. After his graduation from Kingwood High School in 1991, Brett nurtured his creative inclinations at San Antonio College, earning an Associate's Degree in Applied Science in Radio-Television-Film. His career took flight in 1997 when he founded Ponderous Productions in Denver, Colorado. Concurrently producing a community access television series titled “This Is Ponderous,” Brett landed a role as a Master Control Operator at Denver Community Television, swiftly ascending to the position of Production Coordinator. The Texas native returned home in 2000, serving as a versatile Multimedia Journalist for KXXV in the city of Waco. This period also saw the revival of Ponderous Productions, leading to the creation of a television pilot, “Knight Watchmen” that aired in 2003. 2004 saw Brett managing production at KWDB, the Corpus Christi Warner Brother's affiliate. Here, he formed a successful partnership with producer, Bradley Bates. Their collaborative brilliance resulted in nearly a hundred award-winning commercials and acclaimed films like "Barrio Angelz" and "Cartel Killaz," securing nationwide distribution. Returning to San Antonio in 2006, Brett and Bates embarked on an ambitious ten-film project, "The Innocence Saga," contributing significantly to Brett's feature film portfolio. His films during this period found widespread distribution, including a historic bio-pic, "Bass Reeves." One reviewer of the film had this to say,  In 2010, Brett chose to further his education, taking a brief detour as a photojournalist at KIII in Corpus Christi. Around this time, Ponderous Productions transitioned into Not-So-Sane Entertainment, a company that gained recognition for its award-winning short films. The premise of "Knight Watchmen" is about the protagonist, Isabella Montoya is assigned the position of Watchman, a private detective who not only solves crimes, but distributes the punishment. Under the Tree: A Seminar on Freedom with Bill Ayers

We are impatient with radicals who summon up the imagined “good old days” when every campaign was inspired and every action a success—all of it wrapped in the gauzy glow of nostalgia. What could be more depressing than longing for a ship that's already left the shore. But there are occasions when a long and deep look backward can give us courage and vision to face forward, perhaps most productively when our guide is a talented artist. Zayd Ayers Dohrn is the creator and host of one of the most listened to podcasts of 2022, Mother Country Radicals, a 10-episode series from Crooked Media that won the award for Best Audio Storytelling at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival in New York. He is a playwright, professor, and director of the MFA in Writing for Screen and Stage in the Department of Radio/Television/Film at Northwestern University.

My guest in this episode is Comfort Keidel, a foster parent and foster care recruiter with the Oklahoma Department of Human Services. We talk about her reasons for becoming a foster parent, the process and challenges of becoming a foster parent, and the needs for children in foster care. Comfort Kiedel began her life in Kerrville, Texas. After receiving a BA in Radio/Television/Film, a yearning for something more took her as far as New York City with the intention of having a career in the film industry. Being exposed to a large homeless population shocked her to her core, and something in her soul changed after working as a temp at the Food Bank for New York City. After that brief stint in New York, she moved to Ardmore, Oklahoma to be near family as she figured out what direction to take next. Although she only intended to live in Ardmore briefly, she found surprising opportunities. One of those was becoming a teacher, something she had never thought was in her life plan. During this time, she began on her path toward fostering.  Initially rejected as a foster parent due to being a member of the LGBT community, Comfort persevered, and she has been fostering since 2010. She and her partner also have two adopted children, and Comfort currently works for the Department of Human Services in foster care recruitment. It is easy to see through her personal and professional life that fostering is a true passion for Comfort. If you are considering becoming a foster parent, please visit www.okfosters.org. Welcome to the Design Thinking 101 podcast! I'm Dawan Stanford, your host. Today's episode is part one of a two-part series on Design for America. Design for America is a nationwide network that supports innovation for social impact. DFA was founded at Northwestern University, and is helping to shape the next generation of social innovators and design-led studios on over 40 college campuses. Today, we'll speak to three guests about what Design for America is and what does the experience look like when a member participates in a Design for America studio. We start our episode with Eric Richards explaining how he founded Design for America on the UC San Diego campus. Eric was interested in human-led design and, coupled with his interest in social impact, Eric started to search Facebook for others who had a similar desire in utilizing both fields interchangeably. He found a Good Design Lab founded by Don Mormont at UC San Diego. Many of the UC San Diego students who were interested in human-led design had worked at this lab. Eric liked the concept, applied to the university, and was accepted to the program. Through this lab and Don's involvement, many design classes were available to students. Eric joined Good Design Lab as a sophomore - the year after the lab was founded - and took the introductory design class. During his journey with Good Design Lab, Eric became part of a very tight-knit community. He was grateful to have found a community that, like Eric, valued using their skill set for social impact. Andrew Demas discovered DFA by accident while he was a student. He had a friend who was involved in DFA, and one day Andrew visited the Good Design Lab. He fell in love with the process and how the process affects social impact. DFA taught Andrew how to find out who your user is, gaining empathy for the user, and developing a solution for someone else. His new perspective not only changed the way he solved problems in real-world applications, it also changed his view of how he thinks about his curriculum at school, and changed the way he works towards coming up with solutions. Throughout this time, Andrew was connected to many other students who had a passion for design and for giving back to their community in a sustainable way. He was able to put his newfound skills to use when he and his classmates rebuilt a community center that was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy. Andrew felt that DFA gave him his best college and learning experience in university, and he's passionate about his alumni board and networking for future leaders of design thinking and to get more corporations involved with DFA. William Moner is a faculty member who sponsors a DFA Studio at Elon University. Dawan Stanford approached William to mentor and encourage students to engage in the design process. William talks about the process of creating a DFA Studio, using DFA guides, and bringing together the efforts of everyone involved to make DFA happen on campus. He also discusses the challenges of mentoring and recruiting students for DFA.   Bio Eric Richards is starting his last year at UC San Diego, where he's studying Human-Computer Interaction and Design for Social Innovation. His interest is in design that empowers communities and advances equity and sustainability. He currently leads Design for America at UCSD, and advises undergraduate humanitarian engineering projects on campus. Andrew Demas is a Senior Managing Consultant in IBM's Digital Strategy & IX practice and is also the digital account partner for one of IBM's top telecommunications clients. As an IBM Design Thinking Leader, he runs the New York Design Thinking Chapter. His passion for design started with DFA; he served as President of the Barnard-Columbia Design for America Studio for three years, and he currently sits on the DFA Alumni Board.  William Moner is an Assistant Professor of Communication at Elon University and is the faculty mentor for the Elon Design for America studio. He holds a Ph.D. in Radio-Television-Film from the University of Texas, and his research focuses on emerging methods of storytelling and interactive media production through open software platforms and systems.   In This Episode [01:28] Eric tells his story of how he founded Design for America at UCSD.  [02:54] Eric's early experience with DFA chapter on campus. [05:15] How Eric foresees using his skills in his work in the future. [06:31] How Eric came into and is currently developing his need-finding skills. What would it be like if scholars presented their research in sound rather than in print? Better yet, what if we could hear them in the act of their research and analysis, pulling different historical sounds from the archives and rubbing them against one another in an audio editor? In today's episode, we get to find out what such an innovative scholarly audiobook would sound like--because our guest has created the first one! Jacob Smith's ESC (University of Michigan Press) is a fascinating sonic exploration of postwar radio drama and contemporary sound art, as well as a meditation on how humans have reshaped the ecological fate of the planet.  Before we listen to an excerpt of ESC, Mack interviews Jake about how his skills as a former musician came in handy for his work as an audio academic. You can listen to ESC: Sonic Adventure in the Anthropocene in its entirety for free courtesy of the University of Michigan Press. You can also watch Jake's 90s band The Mysteries of Life perform in the "bad music video" Jake mentions or on Conan O'Brien.Jacob Smith is founder and director of the Master of Arts in Sound Arts and Industries, and professor in the Department of Radio/Television/Film at Northwestern University. He is the author of three print-based books on sound: Vocal Tracks: Performance and Sound Media (University of California Press 2008); Spoken Word: Postwar American Phonograph Cultures(University of California Press 2011); and Eco-Sonic Media (University of California Press, 2015). He writes and teaches about the cultural history of media, with a focus on sound and performance.Today's show was edited by Craig Eley and featured music by Blue Dot Sessions. Our intern is Gina Moravec.  Transcript [ethereal music plays] [CRIS CHEEK]This…is…Phantom Power. [MACK HAGOOD]Episode 12. [CRIS]A book unbound. [MAN ANNOUNCER]Tired of the everyday grind? Ever dream of a life of romantic adventure? Want to get away from it all? We offer you escape. Escape, designed to free you from the four walls of today. For a half hour of high adventure. [old, dramatic music plays. In between are people listing off natural disasters.] [MACK]Hey everyone. Welcome back to another episode. This is Mack Hagood. My partner chris cheek is out, so you just got me today. What you just heard is an excerpt from ESC. A fascinating project that’s one part podcast, one part audiobook. And it’s produced by my guest today, Jacob Smith. Jake is the founder and director of the Master of Arts in Sound Arts and Industries program at Northwestern University, where he’s also a professor in the Department of Radio, Television, and Film. So, for those of you who are regular listeners to the show, you know that I work in this disciplinary space that gets called sound studies. So we have all these folks working in this space of sound studies. And yet, how do we publish all of this research that we generate? We publish it in print, or in pixels on the screen, right? We do it via the written word. And that’s why I was so excited about having Jake Smith on today because he is challenging that paradigm, working in sound, and doing something that really could only be done in sound. His new project ESC is an audio native audiobook. [guitar music plays] So what do I mean by that? So basically, this is a book length critical reading of a CBS radio drama from the 1940s and 50s called Escape. But instead of just reading about the radio drama, we actually hear the radio drama itself. And through Jake’s excellent production techniques, we also hear his criticism, and we hear these sounds sort of matched up against the work of contemporary sound artists. The through line argument of the the piece is that this moment in the 40s and 50s, after World War Two, when this radio drama was being produced, is also the moment that was sort of a tipping point in the Earth’s geological history. It’s the moment when human beings start having a larger impact on the Earth’s ecology...
