Laurie & Matt use this episode to explain how they followed up the writing of their Sourcebook (which continues to be grown) with a daily journaling practice that puts the ideas crafted and stored there into practice. Developing a routine that finds middle ground between the sometimes anxiety producing blank page and the overly restrictive fill-in-the-blank journals du jour, their practice is structured but flexible. It's a process that grows self-awareness through daily reflection, reminds us to live our virtues everyday, challenges us to grow the positive and remove the negative, and still leaves room for the daily tasks of life. We each have a Sourcebook, and you either write and live your own, or allow it to be written for you. Our memories are more than a record of our past; they are medicine for the present. In particular, our favorite, positive recollections of past experiences where we overcame obstacles, met the ones we fell in love with, visited faraway lands, or any of the other memories that evoke positive emotions every time they get pulled out of our cranial storage locker and allowed to live again, can forever spread joy in our present. Our ability to remember specific, positive memories can serve as a bulwark against present darkness, and curating a list in our Sourcebook is like filling our medicine cabinets with an endless supply of organic happiness. It's been some of the most important work they've done for themselves, which in turn is good for the teens they serve. On this episode they talk about the first list in their Sourcebook: Virtues. Virtues represent the guiding principles and values that guide our actions, help us make better decisions, and define what we consider to be a truly Good Life. What are your virtues? This week's homework is to do a Google search for a list of virtues, and think about which ones matter the most to you, that you want to define the kind of person you are. Select 4 or more to be your primary virtues, then as many more as you like to be supportive, sub-virtues. #52- "Should Fs Be Given in a Pandemic?"

Laurie & Matt take a look at a tsunami that's coming, but few are recognizing when they ask the question, "Should Fs Be Given in a Pandemic?" Our teens are being asked to perform in an educational setting nobody would purposefully design in normal times, so why should we expect normal results and apply normal grading? Laurie suggests this episode could be just a few minutes long, her answer and feelings on the topic coming swift and strong. Matt takes a little more pragmatic approach, but ultimately believes a similar, compassionate, and reasonable set of grading principles should be applied. Things get a little emotional when the topic of "parents not doing there job" is brought up, a phrase that too many use flippantly. #51- "Should We Accept Late Work?"

Laurie & Matt ask an important question as we inch closer to the end of the first semester, "Should We Accept Late Work?" Late work, the assignments students fail to complete on time and want to turn in after the due date, has always been a contentious issue with teachers, but this year requires some deeper contemplation and debate. Laurie & Matt start by asking what your priority objective is with your assignments- learning content or making deadlines? They then venture into grading late work, overly intricate and unsustainable systems, fairness to those that complete work on time, the motivation of deadlines, and the potential collapse of teacher credibility due to hypocrisy.
