PAIN: Parents & Addicts in Need's @painnonprofit Founder Flindt Andersen and Jason LaChance sat down with Arlina Allen, a Recovery coach and host of the One Day At A Time Podcast. We discuss various topics that include why more people may not be trying 12 Step programs in their recovery, how people mistake programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous for a religion and meeting people where they're at and helping them examine if they are in need of a path to total sobriety. Alina has spent the last 30 years learning about recovery, what works, what doesn't, and in the process, created a life she loves. She has been married for over 25 years, raised two young men and had a successful sales career as a high tech sales executive. Alina is most grateful that she has discovered a hidden talent for helping other women to quit drinking and lead peaceful, joyful, abundant lives. Learning that there are no real secrets, just simple actions based on scientifically proven strategies, and spiritual principals. All that is required is willingness, a guide and the right action steps. Arlina Allen - 12-Step Recovery and the God Question: Demystifying the 12 Steps Welcome to another episode of the Unhooked podcast! I'm your host, Jeremy, and today, we have a truly special guest with us. Arlina Allen is a Certified Recovery Coach, the Founder of Sober Life School, and the host of the award-winning recovery podcast "The One Day At A Time Podcast," which she's been running since June 2016.In this episode, Arlina and I dive deep into her remarkable journey in addiction recovery. She shares her insights on identifying the root causes of addiction and alleviating unnecessary suffering. Arlina opens up about her own traumatic experiences from childhood and how they led her down the path of addiction as a coping mechanism. One of the core themes we explore is the idea that addiction is often a symptom of deeper issues. Arlina emphasizes the importance of addressing these underlying issues and discusses the role of 12-step programs in her own recovery journey. These programs provided her with a structured process for self-examination and self-compassion, which proved to be invaluable in her healing process.Throughout our conversation, we also touch on various aspects of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and the broader topic of addiction recovery. Arlina sheds light on why some individuals have strong reactions to terms like "alcoholic" and how it can be seen as both a badge of honor and a source of shame. We delve into the history of AA meetings and how the practice of introducing oneself as an alcoholic became a common tradition. The concept of powerlessness in AA and its relationship to addiction recovery is another point of discussion, with Arlina offering her unique perspective.Arlina shares her insights on the role of a higher power in the recovery process and highlights the importance of community and social support. Sharing one's struggles with others can be a powerful tool in preventing relapse. In our conversation, Arlina highlights several key takeaways, including:Misconceptions about AA and how reframing certain words and concepts can lead to a deeper understanding. The transformative process in recovery and how discomfort and resistance can ultimately lead to personal growth. An openness to different paths to recovery, beyond AA, including psychedelic-assisted therapies. The incredible power of service in the recovery journey, both for personal growth and helping others.A teaser for a future episode where Arlina plans to delve into the topic of resolving resentment in relationships, a subject that many individuals dealing with addiction and recovery can relate to.Sober Life School- http://www.soberlifeschool.comReinvent - Self Esteem Course http://www.selfesteemcourse.comPodcast http://www.odaatchat.comFB: facebook.com/odaatchat IG: @odaatpodcast @arlinaallenSo, without further ado, let's dive into this enlightening conversation with A

Today my guest is someone who has been on the very prestigious New York Times Best Seller list, not once, twice or three times but FOUR times for non fiction books! Truly an incredible achievement. She was the ghost writer for two of the most spiritual luminaries of our time, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and The Dali Lama. She also wrote the life story for Anthony Ray Hinton called The Sun Does Shine that was chosen for Oprah's book club in 2018. Her name is Lara Love Hardin and her newest book “The Many Lives of Mama Love” was SO good, I absolutely devoured it in about 2 days. I can't wait for you to meet her! But before we jump in, I want to share an experience I had recently. I went paddle boarding with a friend who is also in recovery and you know how we are, small talk isn't a thing so as we were getting into it, I was telling her about some of the guests I had on recently that were relevant to what she was sharing. She was like, Oh I have to get back to the podcast because some of the topics weren't really connecting to anything I was going through. So that got me thinking, I wonder what topics I could include for future episodes? What are YOU struggling with and what topics do YOU want to hear about? You can let me know by sending me a message on IG @arlinaallen or @odaatpodcast, the FB page called The One Day At A Time Podcast or shoot me an email at arlina@odaatchat.com. Also don't forget I have a couple of free guides for you. One is the ultimate sobriety checklist that you can download when you visit soberlifeschool.com, and there's also a resource guide, aptly named “100 resources for your first 100 days” on that same website. Listen to this weeks episode "You're in a checklist marriage" where I discuss how many of us end up in a checklist marriage and the three areas we need to focus on to transition out of it. As a coach, I will never advise you to leave or stay in your relationship, but I will coach you through unpacking it to overcome the #1 issue that exists in your relationship which in this case is being in a checklist life with your partner. When you're in checklist marriage, you are more focused on the "how" of things rather than the "why". You dismiss the aligning of your values part and focus more on moving forward as a couple to get things done. You move on together to get things done like purchasing a home, have children, build schedules, etc and one day wake up and feel like you don't recognize yourself. This is where I come in. I want to help you overcome the #1 issue in your relationship by focusing more on the "why" than your "how". Together we will figure out what it is that you value, what is it that you desire in a parter and bring clarity to your life for once. It's a been a while since you've had clarity in your relationship and this episode highlights how losing ourselves is a direct result of being in checklist relationship. Let's work together to bring forth your true values and have your partner get to know the real you. You deserve to be authentic and everyone around you deserves to meet the real YOU. If this episode resonated with you and you're ready to free yourselves of any idols and figure out who God is calling you to be, then let's work together. This weeks episode focuses on the 3 different types of arguing that we do our relationships. These types of methods for conflict resolution are the most difficult and dangerous for your relationship. The 3 types of arguing in your relationship that cause you to remain stuck are: Talk Too Much: this is where we over communicate to the point that there is no space for action or anyone to take a breath. In my private 1:1 program, I help you create distance between the conversation and the action. Cut Throat: this is where you don't think before you speak and are constantly exploding in your relationship because you have so much bottled up frustration. I want to help you unpack what it is that is bugging you and teach you to deliver your feelings without hurting anyone. Keep My Mouth Shut: this is where one of you have decided that it's no longer safe to be yourself in the relationship and you're better off keeping your mouth shut. I will teach you the characteristics of what this looks like if it's happening in your relationship and how to start creating a safe space for each other. The key to getting out of these types of arguing styles is to focus on yourself first. I know what you're thinking --"but it's them, not me!". I understand that's how you feel, but focusing SO much on this relationship and not YOURSELF is not allowing you to show up as YOU. You're losing yourself slowly. By focusing on your FIRST, you'll be able to: Declutter your mind and find clarity Delivery how you feel with more grace Finally show up as the TRUE YOU I want to help you finally have peace in your relationships so that you can show up as the partner you desire. In my private 1:1 life coaching program, I will teach you my proven methods for surrendering your relationships, so that you can have the life you love and desire again. P.S. This weeks episode touches upon the difference between idolization and inspiration. God tells us that idols are as empty as the wind and we must constantly turn our heart to him. It seems pretty simple and obvious. But, did you know that you could idolize your career? You could even be idolizing your relationship? The line is so thin and sneaky that you don't even see it coming. On this episode, I share the top 3 things we tend to idolize rather than God. Our Careers: when we idolize our careers we become workaholics. I share how our identity becomes wrapping up in how much we work. Our Relationships: when we place pressure on our partners to be our everything. I share how our partners end up becoming our source for joy. Entertainment: when things that are supposed to inspire you become your standard, instead of looking to God. I share how even things like famous artists, creators, etc become the standards for how we should live our lives. Listen to the many ways we tend to worship the gift, rather than the gift giver. P.S.
