Bonds Aren't Broken. What the 1970s Tell Irish Retirees About Bonds Today

Informed Decisions Financial Planning & Money Podcast

A lot of investors have written off bonds after 2022. In this episode, Paddy Delaney explains why that conclusion is based on a misreading of how bonds work — and what the historical data actually shows. The 10-year US Treasury yield went from under 6% to over 11% during the 1970s. Bonds still returned 5.4% per year. The worst single year was a loss of less than 1%. If bonds survived that rate environment, what does it mean for the environment we are in today? In this episode: - How bond returns are calculated (starting yield and duration) - Why rising interest rates improve your future bond returns, not reduce them - What the 1970s data shows, using Damodaran historical records - What this means practically for anyone with bonds in an ARF or occupational pension - A short note on lifestyling: being moved into bonds automatically is very different from choosing to hold them This episode is relevant if you are approaching retirement, already in retirement, or reviewing an ARF or pension that includes a bond allocation. Common Misconceptions about Faith-Based Investing with Brian Mumbert

Faith-based investing has been around for decades, yet many investors still wrestle with an important question: Does aligning your investments with your values mean sacrificing performance or diversification? As more people seek to steward their resources in ways that reflect their convictions, it's worth taking a closer look at what faith-based investing really is—and what it isn't. On today's show, Brian Mumbert, President of Timothy Plan—a pioneer in faith-based mutual funds—joined us to help clear up some of the most common misconceptions and offered a clearer picture of how values-driven investing really works. What Is Faith-Based Investing? At its core, faith-based investing seeks to align financial decisions with biblical values. This often involves screening out companies whose practices conflict with those convictions while still pursuing wise, disciplined investment strategies. Despite its growing popularity, several misconceptions persist. Misconception #1: “Faith-Based Funds Always Cost More” One common assumption is that filtering companies based on values automatically leads to higher fees. In reality, faith-based funds are managed much like traditional mutual funds. They involve professional research, portfolio management, and strategic allocation. In many cases, expense ratios are comparable—especially with the availability of lower-cost options like ETFs. That said, there may be instances where costs are slightly higher. But as Brian Mumbert noted, many investors are willing to pay slightly more to ensure their investments reflect what they truly value. Misconception #2: “You Have to Sacrifice Performance” Another concern is that prioritizing values means settling for weaker returns. But values-based screening doesn't replace sound investment analysis—it works alongside it. Professional managers still evaluate fundamentals, risks, and long-term opportunities. In fact, many faith-based funds have demonstrated competitive performance over time, and in some cases, have even outperformed their unscreened counterparts. As Mumbert explained, the goal is to combine wise stewardship with disciplined investing—not to choose between them. Misconception #3: “It Doesn't Really Make an Impact” Some critics argue that faith-based investing lacks real-world impact since most stock transactions occur on the secondary market. While it's true that buying and selling shares doesn't directly fund companies in the same way as an initial public offering, investing still represents ownership—and ownership matters. Mumbert pointed out that shareholders have a voice. They can vote proxies, engage with companies, and choose not to profit from industries that conflict with their convictions. For many believers, that's a meaningful form of stewardship. Misconception #4: “Screening Limits Diversification” A final concern is that excluding certain companies will significantly narrow investment options. In practice, even strict faith-based screens still leave a vast majority of the investable universe available—often around 90%. That means investors can still achieve broad diversification across sectors and asset classes while remaining aligned with their values. A Better Way to Think About Investing Faith-based investing isn't about making a symbolic statement or checking a box. It's about recognizing that every financial decision reflects what we value—and choosing to steward those decisions intentionally. It invites us to ask a deeper question: What does faithfulness look like in the way I invest what God has entrusted to me? You don't have to choose between conviction and competence. Faith-based investing offers a way to pursue both—aligning your portfolio with your beliefs while still practicing wise, disciplined stewardship. Because in the end, investing isn't just about returns—it's about responsibility. Learn More If you'd like to explore faith-based investing options, Timothy Plan has been a trusted leader in this space for more than 30 years—offering mutual funds and ETFs designed to help investors align their portfolios with their biblical values. This is quite a long talk, on a very fascinating topic, delivered by Acharya das in the Philippines. It is a comprehensive look into the question of spiritual identity, God-realization, and the resultant experience of the awakening of transcendental and ecstatic love for God which naturally arises from that.Acharya das outlines three essential questions for self-realization: What is my essence? (spiritual being), What is my position? (subservient part and parcel of God, not the center of everything), and What is my natural function? (to love and serve). He described how material consciousness leads people to try becoming "mini-gods," placing themselves at the center of “their” universe, which ultimately results in emptiness and unhappiness. Regarding God-realization, he explained three aspects of God's manifestation: Brahman (impersonal spiritual energy), Paramatma (the expansion of God within the heart of all beings), and Bhagavan (the personal form of God in a spiritual realm). The speaker emphasized that love is an exchange between persons and that every soul has an eternal and intimate connection with God who is their true soulmate. He next explains that pure love for God already exists within everyone's heart and doesn't need to be acquired from external sources. Through the process of bhakti-yoga (devotional practice), particularly chanting God's holy names, this dormant love naturally awakens as the heart becomes purified. Some of the verses he quoted or which support this topic:God - He is the eternal among all eternal entities, and the chief conscious being among all conscious beings. Among the many living entities, He is the chief, who fulfills their desires. Śvetāsvatara Upaniṣad 6.13 & Kaṭha Upaniṣad 2.2.13The same jīva (spirit-soul) is eternal and is for eternity and without a beginning joined to the Supreme Lord by the tie of an eternal kinship. He is transcendental spiritual potency. - Śrī Brahma-saṁhitā 5.21Learned transcendentalists who know the Absolute Truth call this nondual substance Brahman, Paramātmā or Bhagavān. ‐ Bhāgavata Purāṇa 1.2.11“Pure love for Kṛṣṇa is eternally established in the hearts of the living entities. It is not something to be gained from another source. When the heart is purified by hearing and chanting, this love naturally awakens. — Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 22.107“By chanting the holy name of the Lord, one dissolves his entanglement in material activities. One of the most common concerns we hear from parents, teachers, and even ABA professionals is, “Isn't that just bribery?” In this episode, we dig into the long-standing confusion between bribery and reinforcement and explain why the difference truly matters. We walk through real-life examples, from grocery store meltdowns to classroom expectations, to show how timing, intent, and planning change everything. We unpack why reinforcement is not about quick fixes or paying for behavior but about intentionally teaching skills, building motivation, and supporting long-term success. We also discuss how poorly planned reinforcement can unintentionally strengthen the very behaviors we are trying to reduce and why coercive “reminders” can feel just as uncomfortable as outright threats.Along the way, we share practical strategies for using reinforcement ethically and compassionately, including how to individualize it, avoid power struggles, and reframe “if then” language into more supportive “when then” statements. If you have ever worried that reinforcement feels wrong or been told it is, this episode will help you feel confident, grounded, and aligned with both the science and your values. What's Inside:The real difference between bribery and reinforcementWhy timing and intent matter more than the reward itselfHow reinforcement can accidentally backfire if misusedEthical, compassionate ways to use reinforcement effectivelyMentioned in This Episode:Episode 127: Classroom ReinforcementWhat is ACT in ABA? What is Pommeau? Pommeau is a: fortified blend of fresh apple must (unfermented) and apple brandy (typically Calvados in Normandy or Lambig in Brittany). The unfermented apple juice and brandy are combined before fermentation, which halts the process entirely and preserves natural sweetness. By law in France, Pommeau must be aged a minimum of 18 months in oak and produced within designated regions. It's rich, amber-colored, and served as an apéritif. It is consider to be a French heritage drink shaped by decades of refinement and protected standards. When did Pommeau receive AOC status? Pommeau received its official Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) status in 1991, formalizing the traditional method and legally protecting what can and cannot be called Pommeau within France. And in America? If you ask what Pommeau is in the United States, the answer is: nothing defined. There is no legal TTB definition, no standard of identity, and no trade agreement protecting the name. Yet hundreds of U.S. labels already use the word…sometimes accurately, sometimes loosely, often inconsistently. So the question becomes, "What happens when a French classic with strict rules lands on U.S. labels with no rules at all?" That's the conversation American isn't having… yet. In this episode, Ria speaks with alcohol beverage attorney Lindsey Zahn to unpack what it means to use the word Pommeau in the U.S.—legally, culturally, ethically—and what cider makers and consumers should consider going forward. Bioelectronic medicine is changing how we treat inflammation, autoimmunity, and chronic disease, and this episode shows you exactly how nerve stimulation could redefine human performance, longevity, and brain optimization. You will learn how electricity, neurotransmitters, and targeted neural pathways can replace drugs, control inflammation, and help you hack the vagus nerve with precision instead of guesswork. Watch this episode on YouTube for the full video experience: https://www.youtube.com/@DaveAspreyBPR Host Dave Asprey is joined by Kevin J. Tracey, MD, president and CEO of the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research at Northwell Health, pioneer of vagus nerve research, and author of The Great Nerve. He is one of the world's most cited scientists in inflammation and neuroscience, and his discoveries created the field now known as bioelectronic medicine. With more than 450 scientific publications and over 120 U.S. patents, he is a trusted authority whose work drives the future of anti-aging, functional medicine, metabolism, and neural therapies. Dr. Tracey and Host Dave Asprey explore how the vagus nerve truly operates, why it contains 200,000 fibers with different functions, and what happens when you stimulate specific pathways that regulate inflammation, HRV, neurotransmitters, and immune signaling. You will learn how nerve impulses transmit information, how voltage gated ion channels shape behavior and biology, and why certain forms of stimulation create measurable improvements in mitochondria, metabolic control, sleep optimization, and emotional regulation. They break down the science behind surgical vagus nerve implants, focused ultrasound, gamma entrainment, cytokine control, and real neuromodulation. They also explore why cold plunging, breath work, HRV training, nootropics, and consumer devices vary so widely in their effects, and how to evaluate these tools with practical biohacking frameworks. You will hear what actually works, what remains experimental, and what the next decade of nerve based therapies could unlock for brain optimization, longevity, ketosis, fasting, supplements, and AI guided interventions in human biology. You'll Learn: • How vagus nerve stimulation reduces inflammation through the inflammatory reflex • Why bioelectronic medicine can replace drugs in autoimmune conditions • How nerve fibers relay electrical and chemical signals inside the body • Why cold immersion, breath work, and HRV training activate specific vagal pathways • How 40 hertz gamma entrainment may influence cognitive decline • Which stimulation methods have clinical validation and which do not • Why high vagal tone is linked to better metabolism, immunity, and emotional stability • What future nerve based technologies may unlock for human performance Dave Asprey is a four-time New York Times bestselling author, founder of Bulletproof Coffee, and the father of biohacking. With over 1,000 interviews and 1 million monthly listeners, The Human Upgrade brings you the knowledge to take control of your biology, extend your longevity, and optimize every system in your body and mind. Have you been diagnosed with restless leg syndrome - but the iron pills or medications you've been given for it aren't giving you any relief? Do you struggle with chronic fatigue, and you've been told it's from restless leg syndrome, but nothing you try makes you feel more rested? If you've ever spent nights Googling “restless leg syndrome treatment” or “restless leg syndrome causes,” you know how frustrating RLS is. When I was diagnosed with restless leg syndrome in middle school, I felt the same confusion and frustration about my RLS. I was told it was because I had low iron. I took the supplement, and it maybe helped a little...but I still felt exhausted throughout the day. It wasn't until I became a functional health practitioner that I figured out what was causing my restless leg syndrome - and how to treat restless leg syndrome for myself in a way that actually WORKED. Now - I've found COMPLETE restless leg syndrome relief (which my husband is so grateful for!). And today, I'm going to teach you how you can do the same. In today's episode, we're diving into the real root causes of Restless Leg Syndrome — the ones most doctors never mention. Schuster emphasizes the significance of understanding the nervous system's role in pain and movement limitations, advocating for individualized approaches to address specific nervous system needs. He also discusses the integration of neurocentric training with traditional practices, the impact of visual, vestibular, and proprioceptive inputs, and the potential for neurocentric training to become more prevalent in both athletic and therapeutic settings. The conversation underscores the importance of neuroplasticity and suggests resources for those interested in exploring neurocentric training further.
