November is Family Court Awareness Month. My friend and colleague, Tina Swithin, has dedicated the month of November to educating people about the family court system: how corrupt it can be, how unfair it is, and how uneducated most people in the family law system are about domestic violence. Tina was a guest on my podcast a few years back to share the truths about the family court system. If you fear you may end up in the family court system, you must listen to this episode. It will help you understand what family court is designed to do and enable you to prepare yourself to battle within the court system, which is not designed to protect you. Listen to hear (or re-hear) this incredible conversation about family court awareness. Featured topics include: Family Court Awareness Month is an opportunity for survivors to raise awareness at a community level. The family court system is abusive. How we can come together to increase awareness. The disconnect between family court and other judicial systems. There is no regulation or checks and balances. Very few states have required trauma-informed or domestic violence training for family court judges. We examine how judges become appointed family law judges. What you can expect when advocating for yourself in the family court system. Learn more about Tina Swithin: Tina Swithin survived a “Category Five Divorce Hurricane” while acting as her own attorney in a high-conflict custody battle that turned her family's life upside down for over a decade. Known for her internationally recognized blog, “One Mom's Battle” and her book series, “Divorcing a Narcissist,” Tina helps survivors to navigate the family court system against narcissists and other toxic individuals. In 2020, Tina launched two major projects: The High Conflict Divorce Coach Certification Program and a nationwide campaign, Family Court Awareness Month. The mission at Family Court Awareness Month is to raise awareness and shine a spotlight on one of the most important branches of our judicial system; the family court system. The very system that was established to govern family law cases and make decisions that are “in the best interest” of children, has some undeniable shortcomings that warrant conversations, solutions and ultimately, change. The mission at Family Court Awareness Month is fueled by the desire for a family court system that is trauma-informed and educated on domestic violence, coercive control and post separation abuse. To truly act in the best interest of children, our family court system needs to incorporate empirical data and research into their decisions and rulings. This week's episode of The 1 Girl Revolution Podcast features the amazing Tina Swithin, founder of One Mom's Battle. In this episode, Tina shares her inspiring life story and talks about growing up in the family court system; how as an adult she suffered trauma and abuse from her narcissistic ex-husband and how she ended up back in the family court system with her own family; how One Mom's Battle came to be and how it's evolved to become a hub for parents and children who are caught up in the family court system worldwide. One Mom's Battle started out as a blog that Tina started to share her own experiences as she navigated through her own divorce and the family court system. Tina acted as her own attorney in the high-conflict custody battle that turned her family's life upside down (which lasted for over a decade) and she quickly learned that divorcing a narcissist or another high-conflict individual escalates family law cases to levels that few can comprehend - and she realized by sharing her own experiences and resources, that she could help others. Tina's plight grew from just one mom (herself) to a village of tens of thousands who all share the same story - through One Mom's Battle. There were different variations and nuances, but the common denominator is toxic, high conflict individuals and post-separation abuse. Tina has chosen to assume the title of survivor versus victim and has become an advocate for change in the Family Court System after seeing the flaws first-hand. Tina believes that the courts have lost sight of their primary focus, which should be the best interest of the child and instead, are too focused on parental rights. Tina believes that children are suffering unnecessarily due to the lack of education on the front lines—and behind the judicial bench. One Mom's Battle is the intersection of narcissistic abuse and child custody issues; with a mission to raise awareness and educate family court professionals on post separation abuse as it relates to co-parenting and the family court system (divorce, paternity and child custody battles). Education on high-conflict individuals and post separation abuse allows family court professionals (Judges, Commissioners, Magistrates, CPS workers, Guardian ad Litems (GAL), Parenting Coordinators (PC), Custody Evaluators, therapists and attorneys) to recognize the abusive dynamics that play out in the family court system so they can make decisions that are in the best interest of children. In 2020, Tina Swithin founded, “Family Court Awareness Month.” Tina is the author of Divorcing a Narcissist (series) and founder of the High Conflict Divorce Coach Certification Program. Tina Swithin has been awarded honors such as the “Top 20 Professionals Under 40” and the “Top 40 Professionals Under 40” in several regional California newspapers. Tina resides in San Luis Obispo, California with her husband and her two daughters. You do not want to miss this powerful and inspiring episode! In this episode you'll hear: Tina's inspiring life story; Her experience growing up in the family court system and then going through it again as an adult with her own family; How she met her now ex-husband, the red flags (narcissism) she ignored, and how she overcame the trauma and abuse; How One Mom's Battle started and how it's grown and evolved to become a network of 10's of thousands, and a resource and support community; And so much more. Tina Swithin, survivor, author and family court advocate, joins Amanda and Jenna in today's episode to talk about the confounding decision some family court judges are making to force traumatized and abused children to see or even live with their abusive parents. Utilizing something called Family Reunification Camps, these judges order already terrified children to be forcibly removed from a protective parent's home and sent to a facility where they're isolated, abused and gaslighted into believing the abuse they just recently escaped from never happened at all and that the parent they saw beat their mom is real sorry about that. Sweet! It recently happened to the children of Josh Homme, accused abuser of his wife Brody Dalle. Homme, vocalist/guitarist of Queens of the Stone Age and drummer for Eagles of Death Metal. Though he threatned to kill his wife, among other atrocities, and despite Dalle testifying that Homme had hit the children, drove drunk with them and that they were scared to be with him, his two young sons were forcibly removed from their home and haven't seen their mom in over a year. Not shockingly, abusers who insist on having custody of their kids who are terrified of them is a power move by abusers to punish and control their partners, and not about these a-holes being any kind of decent parent. And since our criminal justice system was largely built by men to benefit men, these legalized kidnappings track. But that doesn't mean they have to continue. Thanks to the efforts of tireless advocates like Swithin, we're hoping these so-called “camps” will disappear into the ether very soon. Why home birth for Teresa? After an empowering birth center experience with my first child, I absolutely knew home birth was my path for my second child. I felt confident in my body and my choice. My home is also a sacred place for me and part of my healing journey, so the idea of having such a life changing and memorable experience in our sanctuary brought me great joy. I couldn't imagine being anywhere else. Some backstory from Teresa: I had my son on November 13th, 2022, almost 9 years after the birth of my daughter. A dream come true in so many ways after many years of thinking I would never have another child. I am so grateful to have two powerful birth stories, one in a birth center and one at home, despite wildly different circumstances such as my personal life, different countries, a textbook first labor that was 23 hours and then an unexpected 3 hour labor 12 days before my guess date. Some themes that arise are switching providers at 30 weeks even though the care we were receiving before was "fine", the midwife not making it to the birth in time due to precipitous labor, and giving birth in a dark closet (channeling my inner mammal and my childhood cat, haha.) In retrospect, my biggest takeaways are trust, surrender, and standing in my power. My partner painted a beautiful labyrinth before our birth day to serve as a visual reminder of these truths of birth and life: you know you will enter, you know there will be an exit, but the path in between will be winding and unknown, full of potential challenges, but also full of growth and wonder. Resources that were helpful for Teresa: 1. Hair comb - this was my number one coping tool 2. Spinning Babies, particularly their Daily Essentials video was super helpful during my pregnancy 3. Craniosacral therapy 4. For domestic violence resources, the national hotline is 1.800.799.SAFE I also highly recommend following One Mom's Battle 5. For trauma recovery resources, including anyone who's had a traumatic birth, EMDR therapy can be helpful and any tools or professionals that help you regulate your nervous system and feel safe Links From The Episode: Teresa's website: www.onixbloom.com Offers From Our Awesome Partners: Needed: https://bit.ly/2DuMBxP - use code DIAH to get 20% off your order Splash Blanket: https://bit.ly/3JPe1g0 - use code DIAH for 10% off your order Esembly: https://bit.ly/3eanCSz - use code DIH20 to get 20% off your order More From Doing It At Home: Send us your birth story: https://bit.ly/3jOjCKl Doing It At Home book on Amazon: https://amzn.to/3vJcPmU DIAH Website: https://www.diahpodcast.com/ DIAH Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/doingitathome/ DIAH YouTube: https://bit.ly/3pzuzQC DIAH Merch: www.diahpodcast.com/merch Give Back to DIAH: https://bit.ly/3qgm4r9 Learn more about your ad choices. If you are in a relationship with a narcissist and are looking to leave and go through the family court system or you're currently in that court system, you MUST listen to this episode. Today's guest is Tina Swithin. Tina is the author of Divorcing a Narcissist (4-part series), founder of One Mom's Battle, and creator of Family Court Awareness Month. She is also a founding member of the National Safe Parents Organization. Tina Swithin acted as her own attorney in a custody case that spanned six years and during this time, her children were repeatedly placed in harm's way. Tina was successful in terminating her ex-husband's parental rights and while she is considered one of the “lucky ones,” however, for anyone to hear her story and deem her as lucky speaks volumes about the brokenness of the system. Tina works to raise awareness of the issues in the family court system and to educate the general public on post-separation abuse and narcissistic abuse. A glimpse into what you'll learn in this episode: Why the family court system is broken and how to navigate it How to deal with post-separation abuse Ways to bring more awareness to narcissistic abuse You'll hear Tina's story of her experience with a narcissistic partner and the hurdles she had to jump over to go through the family court system, which has now led her to become an advocate for bringing awareness to post-separation abuse and the broken family court system. I decided to release this episode in the month of November, as November is Family Court Awareness Month, a movement that Tina created to shine a light on how broken court systems are around the world. While divorces are never easy, Tina quickly learned that divorcing a narcissist or other high-conflict individual escalates family law cases to levels that few can comprehend. During her ten year journey through the family court system in pro per, Tina went through a two-day trial, over 40 court dates and two full child custody evaluations. During this time, minor's counsel was appointed, over twelve police reports were generated and a total of three child welfare reports determined that her ex-husband was a “moderate risk” yet did nothing to protect her children. In an effort to articulate what was happening, Tina took shelter from the storm by chronicling her journey in her (now) internationally recognized blog, “One Mom's Battle.” Tina's plight grew from just one mom to a village of tens of thousands who all share the same story. There were different variations and nuances, but the common denominator is toxic, high conflict individuals and post-separation abuse. In this episode, Susan highlights the value of Tina's books, work, and journey. There are so many lessons to be learned from her ten-year battle in a high-conflict divorce. Tina is remarried and resides in San Luis Obispo, California with her husband and two daughters. Golden Nuggets and takeaways from this episode include: It only takes one person to create a high conflict case Children are often the abuser's pawns during a divorce Some of the most challenging times for Tina were when she had to learn the system, play nice while trying to maintain boundaries, and have her voice heard In family court, it's not what you say, but what you can prove. Tina shares how she was able to prove one of her ex's lies while they were both under oath The paradigm of being the safe parent and handling the sometimes explosive feelings and emotions your children express in your presence The power is in understanding the narcissist's patterns so that you can manage their behaviors Tune into this episode to hear Tina's amazing journey and for examples of how you can promote child safety advocacy in custody decisions! Tina Swithin survived a “Category Five Divorce Hurricane” while acting as her own attorney in a high-conflict custody battle that turned her family's life upside down for over a decade.

Tina Swithin returns to the show this week! You know her as the leader of One Moms Battle, whose mission is to raise awareness and educate family court professionals on post-separation abuse as it relates to co-parenting and the family court system. She is also a fierce advocate for survivors and change in the family court systems. In fact, through her work, she has been able to get the month of November to be declared Family Court Awareness Month in eight states to date. If you're eventually going to be entering the family court system, you must listen to this episode. It will help you to understand what the family court is designed to do, and enable you to prepare yourself to do battle within the court system—which is not designed to protect you. Join us for this incredible conversation about family court awareness. Show Highlights Family Court Awareness Month is an opportunity for survivors to raise awareness at a community level. (35:07) What you can expect when advocating for yourself in the family court system. (43:24) Learn more about Tina Swithin Tina Swithin survived a “Category Five Divorce Hurricane” while acting as her own attorney in a high-conflict custody battle that turned her family's life upside down for over a decade. Known for her internationally recognized blog, “One Mom's Battle” and her book series, "Divorcing a Narcissist," Tina helps survivors to navigate the family court system against narcissists and other toxic individuals. Our guest today is Tina Swithin, Author and Family Court Advocate. Tina founded One Mom's Battle after navigating a high-conflict divorce in the California Family Court System. Rhonda and Tina discuss the importance of documentation, preparation, and strategy to take on these difficult domestic abuse cases. Grab a pen - you'll want to take notes! When Tina named her blog, “One Mom's Battle,” she truly felt alone and isolated in her journey. After going public with her story in 2011, Tina quickly realized that she was not alone, and that narcissistic abuse affects both men and women. Tina champions children's rights - versus mother's rights or father's rights. Tina has now dedicated her life to raising awareness on narcissistic personality disorder and its impact on victims and, on the family court system. In the fall of 2019, Tina successfully terminated her ex husband's parental rights which is no small feat in the California family court system. Tina has chosen to assume the title of survivor versus victim and has become an advocate for change in the Family Court System. Tina believes that the courts have lost sight of their primary focus, which should be the best interest of the children and are too focused on mothers' rights and fathers' rights. Tina believes that children are suffering unnecessarily due to the lack of education on the front lines and behind the judicial bench. Tina works tirelessly to raise awareness of the issues in the Family Court System and to educate the court system on Narcissistic Personality Disorder and other Cluster B personality disorders such as Borderline Personality Disorder and Antisocial Personality Disorder. Tina has written a series of books under the title, "Divorcing a Narcissist.”
November marks the start of Family Court Awareness Month and in this week's episode, Susan Guthrie is joined by Tina Swithin, the driving force behind the movement and the founder of One Mom's Battle, which grew out of her epic 10-year divorce battle with her narcissistic ex-husband. Family Courts are challenged in so many ways with overworked judges and staff, limited support and resources and a public dealing with high emotion and financial strain. When you add high conflict into the mix, it can truly be a perfect storm for disaster and Tina Swithin know this all too well. Her decade long struggle through the family courts with her divorce and post-divorce custody issues with her narcissistic ex, gave her insights and an understanding of the system, and it's shortcomings and failures, that not many people experience. Tina ultimately was able to represent herself in court and to terminate her exes parental rights, in an effort to protect her children and she is passionate about sharing her wisdom and experience with others. Tina wrote her book, Divorcing a Narcissist: One Mom's Battle, which is now a website, program and community, to help those who need help as they navigate the broken family court system. She also was the driving force behind establishing Family Court Awareness Month, intended to bring awareness to the shortcomings of the family law court system and spark conversation and change for the benefit of the children involved. In this episode, Tina covers her top questions to ask yourself to prepare to divorce a narcissist and protect your kids - don't miss it! ********************** More Information About This Week's Special Guest: Tina Swithin is the author of Divorcing a Narcissist (series), founder of One Mom's Battle and the High Conflict Divorce Coach Certification Program. I can't go into family court and expect that the judge is just going to see that this person is a problem...It's a marathon to get to the point where they do recognize who the problem person [is in the relationship]. ” Family court is simply not equipped to deal with high-conflict divorce proceedings, plus some of the aspects that are broken.
