Entitled, "Doctor Love...Bernie Siegel and his controversial theories of self-healing." Einstein said, "Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds." Dr. Siegel (who refers to be called Bernie) is a pioneer in the Mind-Body Healing relationship and revolutionized the way doctors and patients harnessed the power of the mind to heal.  A retired general and pediatric surgeon, New York Times Best-Selling Author, founder of the ECap (a form of individual and group therapy for cancer patients), Bernie challenged conventional medical practices when experiencing patients who defied the odds of healing, getting well, and living fulfilling lives. One patient said to Bernie, "You're a nice guy...I feel better seeing you but I cannot take you home." This experience got Bernie thinking that he could do more as doctor to help people between office visits.  In this episode, Bernie shares the inspiration he's given to tens of millions of people over the years spanning over 4 decades. He talks about an experience interpreting a drawing with Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, the importance of love, how doctor and patient work together as a team, the one question to ask yourself when struggling. This week, Tina Swithin, author of Divorcing a Narcissist: One Mom's Battle, re-joins Susan Guthrie, Esq. on The Divorce & Beyond podcast.  Tina shares her 10-year journey to protect herself and her daughters from an abusive ex-husband and her mission to help other women do the same!  In this episode, Susan highlights the value of Tina's books, work, and journey.  There are so many lessons to be learned from her ten-year battle in a high-conflict divorce.  One of the most enduring lessons was how hard it was to protect her children's safety and best interests in the family court system. But with tenacity and creativity in bringing proof about her ex-husband to the court, she was able to finally end her court battle and have a positive outcome.  Tina Swithin is the author of Divorcing a Narcissist (series), founder of One Mom's Battle, and the High Conflict Divorce Coach Certification Program. Tina continues to champion children's rights through her family court advocacy. Tina is working to raise awareness of the issues in the family court system and to educate the general public on post-separation abuse and narcissistic abuse. Tina is remarried and resides in San Luis Obispo, California with her husband and two daughters. Golden Nuggets and takeaways from this episode include: It only takes one person to create a high conflict case  Children are often the abuser's pawns during a divorce Some of the most challenging times for Tina were when she had to learn the system, play nice while trying to maintain boundaries, and have her voice heard  In family court, it's not what you say, but what you can prove. Tina shares how she was able to prove one of her ex's lies while they were both under oath The paradigm of being the safe parent and handling the sometimes explosive feelings and emotions your children express in your presence The power is in understanding the narcissist's patterns so that you can manage their behaviors Tune into this episode to hear Tina's amazing journey and for examples of how you can promote child safety advocacy in custody decisions!  About this week's special guest: Tina Swithin Tina Swithin survived a “Category Five Divorce Hurricane” while acting as her own attorney in a high-conflict custody battle that turned her family's life upside down for over a decade. While divorces are never easy, Tina quickly learned that divorcing a narcissist or other high-conflict individual escalates family law cases to levels that few can comprehend.   During her ten year journey through the family court system in pro per, Tina went through a two-day trial, over 40 court dates and two full child custody evaluations. During this time, minor's counsel was appointed, over twelve police reports were generated and a total of three child welfare reports determined that her ex-husband was a “moderate risk” yet did nothing to protect her children.   In 2020, Tina Swithin founded, “Family Court Awareness Month.” Tina is the author of Divorcing a Narcissist (series) and founder of the High Conflict Divorce Coach Certification Program. Tina Swithin has been awarded honors such as the “Top 20 Professionals Under 40” and the “Top 40 Professionals Under 40” in several regional California newspapers. America's Favorite Parenting Expert is back on the show! Christina McGhee re-joins host Susan Guthrie on The Divorce & Beyond podcast. Together they discuss the top tips for managing a difficult co-parent!  Parenting even under the best of circumstances is challenging. When you add into the mix a co-parent who is uncooperative or high conflict, it's downright exhausting. So, what can you do?  Christina has some wonderful tips about how to maneuver a co-parenting situation where your co-parent is non-existent or uncooperative. Christina shares ways to work through the feelings of hopelessness and exhaustion. Plus, she talks about how to get to a place of being in control of yourself and your emotions so you can be an empowered, consistent, engaging, and confident parent to your children.  Christina McGhee is a speaker and divorce parenting expert who believes divorce doesn't have to equal devastation for families.  She is also the author of the highly acclaimed book, “Parenting Apart: How separated and divorced parents can raise happy and secure kids.” Some topics that Christina and Susan discuss: What Christina means when she says “When there's no “Co” in Co-parenting…” Instead of staying focused on fixing the co-parent, lean into your co-parenting values and work on yourself Radical acceptance: Adjust your expectations and accept things the way they are…for now. “It may not get easier, but how you manage it makes a difference.”  Ask yourself: How is your response going to impact your children? Talk about the problem, not the person. “Making the other parent look small will never make you look big.” Don't forget about the power of one!  Tune into this episode to hear tips and strategies that will keep your children at the center of your divorce and to learn how to cope with a difficult co-parent! About this week's special guest: Christina McGhee Christina McGhee is a speaker and divorce parenting expert who believes divorce doesn't have to equal devastation for families.   While splitting up is undeniably hard, with the right kind of information and support, she thinks parents can be children's absolute best resource as life changes.   As a coach with 20+ years of experience, Christina is dedicated to providing parents with the tools and practical support they need to get it right for their kids.  She is also the author of the highly acclaimed book, Parenting Apart: How separated and divorced parents can raise happy and secure kids.   As a child of divorce and as a bonus mom (aka step-mom), Christina gets plenty of opportunities to practice what she preaches.  Together she and her husband have four “adultish” children (2 bonus, 2 bio), an ever-growing community of rescue dogs/cats, and an obscene number of chickens. Susan Guthrie is joined by Jan Barefoot, the Barefoot P.I., to discuss how a private investigator may be the secret weapon you need for your divorce! This episode aims to help listeners understand what a private investigator (P.I.) does in a divorce. We often think about hiring a P.I. solely to find out if a spouse is having an affair. Yet, there is so much more they can do to help bolster the divorce case, including gathering information or creating a safe space for your next move.  Ultimately a private investigator can help you by confirming your gut instincts, unburdening emotional turmoil, and allowing you to gain clarity on how you want to proceed with your divorce.  Jan Barefoot founded Barefoot Professional Investigations in 1986 to provide targeted investigative services to clients in the southeastern United States. Jan's unique interest in investigations was spurred by her experience working within the legal industry and a keen ability to uncover details. Jan's passion is to impact the lives of Clients from favorable verdicts in capital murders cases to restoring spouses whose families have been wronged. Jan and Susan cover these Golden Nugget topics: How a P.I. can be helpful to someone going through a divorce What a private investigator does when performing surveillance services Jan explains that when you are involved in a custody dispute there is information a P.I. can gather for your case Understanding the complexities of today's digital world, digital forensics, and divorce  Best practices for background checks when newly dating or even highering childcare services  You won't believe all of the ways a P.I. can help you in your divorce. Jan's passion is to impact the lives of Clients from favorable verdicts in capital murders cases to restoring spouses whose families have been wronged.  Her approach to private investigations has always been simple: deliver on commitments and provide unparalleled customer service. By nature, private investigation work is often quite sensitive and can be extremely challenging to all involved parties. Jan knows how critical it is to operate with respect, discretion, and professionalism. Over three decades later and after investigating over 200 murder cases and nearly 3,000 domestic cases, her investigators and staff continue to carry that torch. Jan holds a degree from King's Business College and worked as a legal assistant for several years before moving to the investigative industry. In a post captioned "Dating in Your 40s be like . . . " that must be seen to be believed (click here to watch!) This week host Susan Guthrie is joined by returning guest Jackie Pilossoph, Founder of Divorced Girl Smiling. Together Susan and Jackie discuss the importance of understanding the anger about your divorce and how to move past it so that you can thrive in your beautiful beyond! Some people go ten, twenty, or even thirty years caught up in the anger of their divorce.  For example, we all know that one person who continues to talk about how angry they are that their ex left them for another person, twenty years earlier. It's normal and healthy to be angry.  However, holding onto anger for too long will impact your entire life; and not in the best of ways.  During their conversation, Jackie shares seven practical tips and suggestions to help you acknowledge, process, and work through your emotions. If you are wondering HOW to let go of your anger - Jackie will help you! You have all the control of letting that anger go - it's time to smile again.  Jackie Pilossoph is the creator and editor-in-chief of Divorced Girl Smiling, a website, podcast, and app. Jackie, who went through a divorce several years ago, is a former TV and newspaper journalist who spent 8 years writing her syndicated weekly column, Love Essentially for the Pioneer Press/Chicago Tribune. Jackie and Susan discuss these Golden Nuggets: No judgment zone! Anger is a normal and healthy emotion If you are in the anger phase - it's okay to acknowledge it to others “We can choose what we want to define ourselves as - anger, bitterness, or living in the past should not be one of those things.” Letting go does not mean forgetting what happened  Why you should shift the focus on yourself and your children  “The only time you should think about the past is if you are going to learn from it and do better.”  “If you love yourself don't say, ‘What if…'” The bottom line: You have to love yourself enough to let that anger go This episode is a must-listen for anyone eager to learn how to release their anger for good!
