“The music that I fell in love with that made me want to be a musician when I was a young teenager was not loved because it's super difficult. That's not the reason you love music. You love music that makes you feel and makes you think. If something is challenging, that feeling of reaching the finish line and being able to create a performance that you're proud of is super rewarding. If something is impossible, that doesn't excite me.”Born in Australia and raised in an immigrant family, Melissa Dunphy herself immigrated to the United States in 2003 and has since become an award-winning and acclaimed composer specializing in vocal, political, and theatrical music. She first came to national attention when her large-scale work the Gonzales Cantata was featured in The The Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic, National Review, and on Fox News and The Rachel Maddow Show, where host Rachel Maddow described it as “the coolest thing you've ever seen on this show.”. Other notable works include the song cycle Tesla's Pigeon, which won first place in the NATS Art Song Composition Award, and choral work What do you think I fought for at Omaha Beach? which won the Simon Carrington Chamber Singers Competition and has been performed nationally by ensembles including Chanticleer and Cantus.Dunphy is the recipient of a 2020 Opera America Discovery Grant for Alice Tierney, an opera commissioned by Oberlin Conservatory which premiered in 2023 at Oberlin and Opera Columbus. She has been composer-in-residence for the Immaculata Symphony Orchestra, Volti, and the Saint Louis Chamber Chorus, and her commissions include works for the BBC Singers, VOCES8, Mendelssohn Chorus, and the Kennett Symphony. Dunphy is also a Barrymore Award-nominated theater composer and is Director of Music Composition for the O'Neill National Puppetry Conference.Dunphy has a Ph.D. in composition from the University of Pennsylvania and a B.M. from West Chester University and is on faculty at Rutgers University. She is president of the board of directors for Wildflower Composers and serves on the board of Lyric Fest. She lives in Philadelphia with her husband, Matt; the Dunphys are currently the owners and developers of the Hannah Callowhill Stage, a new performance venue in Old City Philadelphia which they hope to open in 2026 for the 250th anniversary of the birth of America, and co-hosts of the popular podcast The Boghouse about their adventures in Philadelphia colonial archaeology. To get in touch with Melissa, you can visit her website, melissadunphy.com or find her on Instagram (@mormolyke) or Facebook (@mormolyke).Choir Fam wants to hear from you! Sarah Fairchild is a mixed media artist concerned about our environment, creating and representing natural forms through a synthetic lens. Her work depicts the common and often ignored forms of weeds and wild flowers; recently, pollinators and other beneficial insects have crept into her work, creating a two-dimensional insectarium that depicts the interconnection of species, the fragility of our ecosystems, as well as a reverence for nature and all its inhabitants. She hopes considering these commonplace forms in a new and unusual way will arouse a sense of wonder, appreciation and concern for the environment, as well as the urgent need for a sustainable living planet. Recent commissions include Bloom, a temporary three dimensional abstract bouquet installed inside the lobby of One Liberty Plaza, New York City; Floribunda, a two-part temporary installation adapted from an original painting on the exterior and three original mixed media artworks inside the lobby at One Pierrepont Plaza in Brooklyn; Cruciferous, a temporary installation adapted from two original paintings, adorned the lobby of the Grace Building in New York City; set and prop design for Opera Columbus' production of Lully's Armide; and a large-scale wallpaper installation at the Columbus School for Girls. Recent publications include New American Paintings, International Painting Annual, and her work is included in several public and private collections including the Columbus Museum of Art and the Pizzuti Collection. "I am a mixed media artist concerned about our environment, creating and representing natural forms through a synthetic lens. Themes in my work straddle the realms of fashion and the natural world, while playing with the ideas of decoration, beauty, sensuality and questions regarding the handmade versus the mass produced. My work depicts the common and often ignored forms of weeds and wild flowers; recently, pollinators and other beneficial insects have crept into the work, creating a two-dimensional insectarium that depicts the interconnection of species, the fragility of our ecosystems, as well as a reverence for nature and all its inhabitants. Gifted with a beautiful, powerful, classically trained voice, American singer JohnRiesen straddles the line between Opera and Popular music with ease. Originallyinspired by the voices of Josh Groban and Michael Buble, John pursued a career asan operatic tenor where he performed more than 40 leading roles with opera andmusical theater companies throughout the United States including Atlanta Opera,Michigan Opera Theatre, Des Moines Metro Opera, Anchorage Opera, OperaBirmingham, Opera Columbus, Shreveport Opera, Pensacola Opera, IntermountainOpera Bozeman, Tri-Cities Opera, Ithaca Opera, among others. Recently John was seen in his Lincoln Center debut as the voice of Tony in LeonardBernstein's West Side Story Suite as well as the tenor soloist in Stravinsky's LesNoces with the New York City Ballet, and tenor soloist in Rachmaninoff's Vesperswith the NY Oratorio Society. He will be making his Carnegie Hall Debut as TenorSoloist in the Messiah December 2021.Seen most recently in classical crossover collaboration with Emmy-Nominatedpianist-composer and PBS TV star Marina Arsenijevic singing new arrangements ofCrossover standards by Frank Sinatra, Michael Bublé, Tom Jones and many others. This touching, heartfelt song was written 20 years ago by my father, Craig Riesen, for thepassing of his mother (my grandmother). I recall its conception vividly. My father had writtena letter saying many of the things he'd wished to say to her (as we knew she was dying fromcancer), and soon after she passed away. He was heartbroken.I remember him sitting in the living room, with tears rolling down his face as he began to playthis simple, sweet, and longing melody. Soon, words came flowing out with the tune, and thissong was created. At the time, I could not sing. I was still an avid baseball player, but as theyears passed and my vocal talents became apparent the song was passed from my father tome.I get chills to this day, recalling how it felt to say goodbye with song. Needless to say,You're The Best; has been an important part of my life for many years, and I believe that itcan touch other people in the same way that it has touched my heart. We all haveexperienced loss or nostalgia for our loved ones, and this piece pulls at those strings.Originally composed for piano and voice, we have expanded the instrumentation to add soloviolin, electric bass, slight percussion, and synth to fill out the texture. It is a truly specialsong. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
