Want a quick estimate of how much your business is worth? With our free valuation calculator, answer a few questions about your business and you'll get an immediate estimate of the value of your business. You might be surprised by how much you can get for it: https://flippa.com/exit -- In this episode of The Exit: Chris Vanderzyden, founder and CEO of Legacy Partners and a former CPA turned entrepreneur, doesn't just talk about selling companies—she's lived it. Twice. After experiencing the good, the bad, and the "wish-I-knew-that-earlier" of business exits, she set out to reinvent the process. Her mission? To help business owners walk away from their life's work not just with a check, but with peace of mind. The Wake-Up Call: Chris shares how too many entrepreneurs are caught off guard—often approached by buyers with zero preparation. Letters of intent in hand, they're suddenly scrambling to understand their business's true value and what the deal means for their future. Her message is clear: Don't wait for a knock at the door. Start planning today. Chris built Legacy Partners around a simple idea: exiting a business is personal. It's about money, sure—but it's also about identity, timing, legacy, and life after the deal. Her team helps owners develop a “master exit plan” that includes: Valuation early and often: Not just to know what your business is worth today—but what can be done to intentionally increase that value before selling. Tactical tax planning: Like estate freezes and trusts—moves that take time and can't be done in the eleventh hour. Team building: From M&A attorneys to wealth managers, having the right specialists matters. (Spoiler: your real estate lawyer isn't the one to negotiate your exit.) What are Chris's top takeaways? Biggest mistake you can make? Waiting too long to plan—and failing to understand your EBITDA is more important than just growing revenue. Timing is everything—externally (sector roll-ups, interest rates, market trends) and internally (don't wait until you've “maxed out” the business). Growth potential matters: Buyers want a runway ahead. If it looks like there's no room left to scale, it can hurt your valuation. It's not about the top-line number—it's what's left after taxes, debt, and fees that really counts. -- Chris Vanderzyden is the President & CEO of Legacy Partners, LLC, an exit planning and M&A advisory firm dedicated to serving privately held, middle-market business owners, in creating and executing successful exit strategies resulting in the harvesting and preservation of wealth. She began her career as a CPA for Coopers & Lybrand, the company that later became PricewaterhouseCoopers following a merger, and subsequently served as an asset manager with Northwest Asset Management in Los Angeles. Following her positions in the corporate world, Chris became an entrepreneur and has successfully built and sold multiple businesses. She has over twenty years of experience consulting for M&A firms and privately held businesses as they grow and ultimately execute their exit plans. Coopers have used everything from torches to infrared lamps to toast the inside of barrels. Now, a technique pioneered by the wine industry is making its way into whisky: the use of heated Icelandic magma stone formed by volcanic lava. It's said to provide a more consistent toasting than other methods, and Dewar's is the first to use the technique in whisky. We'll talk about it with Dewar's master blender Stephanie Macleod on this week's WhiskyCast In-Depth. In the news, more tariffs on whisky could be coming this week, while Whisky Magazine hands out its annual World Whiskies Awards and Icons of Whisky Awards.

HEAVY Music Interviews
From FRANKIES To DINGBATS PARTY PIT - Keeping Music Alive With JORDAN McDONALD

HEAVY Music Interviews

Interview by Kris PetersPhoto credit ALI NASSERIDecember 2023 saw the end of an era of live music that reinvigorated the entire Sydney music scene and spread that love throughout the rest of the country. For 10 years, Frankies Pizza was the cornerstone of the Sydney live music hub, bringing a swag of international bands through its doors as well as giving Australian acts of all genres and career trajectories a home where they could be heard. And, more importantly, understood. While the entire staff of Frankies was involved in bringing the club to life, one man would always be in the thick of things playing, performing, or moshing in the pit. That man - Jordan McDonald - became a legend amongst many, always smiling, always approachable and never judgemental. So, when Frankies closed its doors for the final time, the local music scene lost not only a great venue but also an icon of the industry. While being vocal that he did not want Frankies to continue in any shape or form in another venue - believing the legacy should end where it started - McDonald never turned his back on the music scene, continuing his drumming passion with local and touring acts as well as branching out into other areas of hospitality, but being an active and contributing part of the Australian music scene in a capacity where he could give back to the industry was never far from his mind.Initially launching his own business Nite Rite, aimed at helping businesses and individuals set up and run live music venues amongst other things, McDonald soon found opportunities knocking to start up something more based on his personal choices and experiences. This came in the form of a new live music venue situated in the heart of the Sydney CBD that was screaming out for live music. After getting his head back into the booking and promoting side of music, McDonald is now ready to launch a monthly live music night called Dingbats Party Pit at a venue underneath the Arcade Bar on O'Connell Street on March 7. But of course, as anyone who visited Frankies or knows Jordan McDonald would lovingly point out, the man has more on his mind than a once-monthly event.HEAVY sat down with Jordan for an interesting chat to flesh things out."I'm glad other people remember it, because I don't remember much," he laughed when we first bring up Frankies. "That was ten years of my life, and it was ten years well spent. It was fantastic. And it was one of these classic examples of the whole fake it 'til ya make it thing. I had this brilliant business partner who pulled me into the mix when I was selling him beers - because I used to tour with bands around the United States and I would come back to Australia and the closest thing to a craft beer would be your Little Creatures or Coopers or whatever. But there wasn't too much in the way of funky options out there, so I started distributing all these interesting beers into the country, and there was this dude who had a great little venue called Shady Pines Saloon and I would sell him a bunch of American beers. One night he pulled me aside, and he said, 'hey man, I've got this idea. I wanna do a rock n roll club. I have a space in the Sydney CBD that is a totally untried and untested area for this kind of thing.'"At that point of time everyone would go to the CBD to go to work, finish work, then go home. You just wouldn't hang out there. And he had this concept to throw a gig every night of the week, seven days a week until 4am, and he thought I was the solution to it. I didn't know what the hell I was doing, but I said yes, let's do this thing, and fast forward ten years and Frankies Pizza had built its name as a trusted force in the rock n roll world."In the full interview, Jordan talks more about Frankies and the legacy it left behind, what he has been doing since it closed down, his new company Nite Rite and how it aims to help the music industry, his new venture Dingbats Party Club and what to expect, the venue itself, the launch party of March 7, future plans to open it up for local, national and international acts and more. The March 7 launch event features 5 bands, each overflowing with Party Rock attitude. Drawing heavy inspiration from the Rock Clubs of Hollywood's Hair Metal heyday, Dingbats thought it best to come out swinging Sunset Strip style. If Big Red Fire Truck, Bloody Legend and The Hush don't leave you wondering who bought the time machine to 1989, Planet Earth's #1 Poison tribute act, Poizon'Us, will have you flying in the Flux Capacitor by the first four bars.In case anyone gets too comfortable, Dingbats are dropping a wildcard set from one of the world's most exciting up and coming alternative acts, MANNEQUIN DEATH SQUAD. A 2 piece DIY tour de force taking the world by storm. DJs NITECALL, AXL BROS & JORDAN ADAM will be reducing a Heavy Metal jús before, between and after all featured acts. And that's not all. Thraxxy Kilmister's Horrendously Bad Tattoo Competition calls upon all cretins present to bare their most regrettable ink for a chance at mega merch packs, tattoo credit and a generous portion of champion's glory. This is a fully accessible event with seamless wheelchair access and disabled facilities. Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by MAAP One of the things I love most about being at the Tour Down Under is getting to catch up with people in person and record podcasts live. The chemistry is just so much better than a video call, and I love being able to pick up on those little tidbits of information or body language that you miss online.  With that in mind, I was absolutely stoked to sit down with one of the most enigmatic, exciting, and down right nuts bike riders out there; the legend that is Lachlan Morton. To make it even better, we were joined by Rachael Peck - Lachy's wife and a key part of his support team - and the hardest working bike mechanic, swanny, driver, logistics manager, and a million other things in the whole industry, Tom Hopper. Back in 2024, Lachy broke the record for riding a lap of Australia. Just think about that for a second. An entire lap of Australia. With support on the road from Rachael and Tom, Lachy covered 14,200kms in a little over 30 days riding. A quick bit of maths, and that's over 450kms a day…A DAY! That's more than I ride in a week (more like a month) these days! I cannot get my head around what Lachy's achieved so I loved being able to sit down with him and hear more from the man himself and the team behind him about what went down out there on the road.  This is a banger of an episode, and I loved being able to capture this yarn to share with you all. Lachy's a really humble guy and a great story teller. Rachael's only ever followed Lachy's crazy challenges from behind a laptop watching his dot tick along - so this was a totally new experience for her to be there on the ground by his side as he embarked on his record attempt. If you don't know Tom Hopper, the word ‘Legendary' doesn't even begin to describe him. He's the mastermind behind EF's alternative racing programme, as well as all of Lach's wild adventures, and hearing about the details of what goes on behind the scenes of a project like this was eye opening.  I also just had to ask Lachy what's next. Rumours have been circulating for a little while now that this lap of Australia was a practice run for an around-the-world record attempt, and I had to find out if these rumours are true! I won't give away his answer here, you'll have to listen to this ep to hear what he says!  Guys, you're going to love this one. Sit back, relax, crack open a Coopers - just like Tom Hopper did whilst we were recording - ,and enjoy! Cheers! Mitch   This episode is supported by our friends at JOIN. These initiatives include restructuring the executive leadership team, implementing a workforce reduction affecting approximately 12% of the company's global workforce, and closing the Louisville-based Brown‑Forman Cooperage. “In 2025, Brown‑Forman celebrates 155 years of delivering Nothing Better in the Market. We have achieved this impressive milestone in part because of our relentless focus on evolving our strategy, our portfolio, and our organization to grow and thrive,” said Lawson Whiting, President & Chief Executive Officer. “Today's announcement will ensure we have the structure and teams in place to continue on this path, while also making investments that we believe will facilitate growth for generations to come.” Workforce Reduction To enhance operational efficiency and agility, Brown‑Forman has made the difficult decision to reduce its global workforce by approximately 12% of its 5,400 employees worldwide. Brown‑Forman is deeply committed to supporting departing employees with comprehensive transition agreements that include severance, outplacement services, and other benefits to help them through this career change. This organizational evolution will simplify and streamline Brown‑Forman's structure, allowing it to become a more agile and efficient organization and reinvest in the capabilities, technologies, brands, and people that will drive future growth. Brown‑Forman Cooperage Closure Brown‑Forman will close its Louisville-based barrel-making operation, Brown‑Forman Cooperage, by April 25, 2025. This closure, which will impact approximately 210 hourly and salaried employees, is part of the overall 12% workforce reduction. Brown‑Forman will offer severance, outplacement services, and benefits consistent with their terms of employment.  Moving forward, Brown‑Forman will source barrels from an external supplier to ensure a steady supply of the same high-quality barrels at a competitive price. Collectively, these actions are projected to deliver approximately $70 to $80 million in annualized cost savings, a portion of which is expected to be reinvested to accelerate growth. In addition, the company will receive more than $30 million in proceeds in connection with the sale of the cooperage assets. The company expects to incur approximately $60 to $70 million in aggregate charges for severance and related costs associated with the workforce reduction and cooperage closing.  Brown‑Forman.com. I couldn't find where on spotify to leave a review from this episode, so I dropped it here.I've been listening since day 1, your guests just keep getting better every episode so great job! That being said, this has been my favorite episode hands down! I have actually almost applied to be a warden in my state twice now, with the emphasis in trying to talk our dnr into starting a canine unit, hearing john talk about doing just that has made me want to do it even more now. Once I'm closer to retiring from what I'm doing now, I'm definitely going to do it. So thank you for bringing him on to talk!P.S. Drink recommendation....have you ever tried a "Long Drink"? It's a drink that came from Finland when they hosted the Olympics and wanted a national drink to give the athletes (go figure now they give them cardboard beds to dissuade fraternization lol) that is gin, juniper berries, grapefruit, and carbonation. They are so refreshing and light. Everyone I have given one to has said it is the best thing they have tried in a long time, so next time you're at the store pick up a few cans to try out during the show. Thanks again keep up the great work, and sorry you live in a commie state...

The discussion this week opens with the 2025 Mini Cooper S, a formerly subcompact car that's grown up a bit, but still has a way to broadcast its cute charm. Benjamin has plenty to say about its design, but there are a few important issues he brings up about its user experience. Does that all get in the way of how it drives? Then Sami chimes in with a review of TWO Honda Civics. First up is the manual-only 2025 Civic Si, which gets a few mild updates this year to ensure no one forgets about this sport-compact staple. Sami has a lot to say about whether the Si is still worth talking about these days, and if it's gone too far from the usual gameplan of being a cheap fun car. Then he discusses the 2025 Civic Hatchback Hybrid, which has plenty of torque along with incredibly low fuel consumption, making it a jack of all trades. But it does carry a steep price tag in some regions, which turns him off entirely.

Rylan Clark is on the cusp of becoming a national treasure. Having defied the odds of most reality TV stars, he has managed to stay the course, cementing his already steady career rise to the top with his most recent television outing with Rob Rinder 'Rob and Rylan's Grand Tour', which showed the viewing public a whole new side to his talents. Brought up in the East End by his mum, Linda. Rylan or Ross as his family and friends know him, was always performing from a young age, according to his mum. The family moved to Essex when he was around 11 going to school in Upminster, where Ross was a mischievous and talented student. After a few years in retail he started modelling and went off to Ibiza where he was in tribute bands to Take That and Westlife. His big break came when he appeared on X Factor in 2012. Although he didn't win, he did make an impression, and after winning Celebrity Big Brother his career took off. Mark Coles charts the rise of Rylan Clark. Charles and Albert team up with a young family, The Coopers, traveling out from Michigan to meet up with their Uncle Jed. It turns into the the worst freighting trip experience EVER when Charles has to deliver more than the load from Garvey Freight Co: the two Cooper children to their uncle. Eventually, Murphy's Law places the two children on a one way trip to a huge Orphanage leading to Albert sharing his thoughts and feelings and Charles making an impromptu decision. How often should you check the brakes on a wagon? Is Charles having any sense of deja vu? Why do I get the feeling the cast is about to grow...again? Little House on the Prairie Podcast: Walnut GroveCast

Christina from the AvonleaCast Podcast returns to the show to discuss this tragic and shocking 2 parter! We discuss so many things so and I hope you enjoy this discussion! “Charles and Albert travel with the Cooper family while on a delivery. A serious accident occurs while the Coopers are going down a steep hill. The Cooper parents are killed. Charles tries to find Cassandra and James a new home. When he can’t find anyone to take them both in, he feels he has to send them to an orphanage. After thinking about this idea some more, Charles decides to take care of the kids himself for a short period. Reverend Alden eventually finds someone to take in the kids. However, this family just wants them to work. When Cassandra and James run away, their adoptive father doesn’t even go to look for them. When Charles finds the kids, he tells them that he will adopt them if they could stand the house being more crowded. They happily agree to stay with the Ingalls.” The Lost Ones Parts 1 and 2 originally aired on May 4 and May 11, 1981 The opening song “Albert” is written and performed by the amazing Norwegian band, Project Brundlefly and is used with permission.
