Host Carl Jones is joined by actor, comedian and Manchester United fan Marv Dickinson and comedia, Aston Villa fan and host of World Cup of World Cups and World Cup of Euros, James Cook to relive the 1998/99 season. There's the return of David Beckham from France '98 as public enemy number one, Paulo Di Canio pushing over a referee, John Hartson volleying a teammate in the head. Roy Evans budges up for Gerard Houllier in the Liverpool dugout, Big Ron takes his place in the wrong one and Brian Kidd waves goodbye to his seat on the bench at the beginnings of one of the greatest seasons recorded in club football to take Blackburn down instead. Dwight Yorke narrowly avoids being shot by John Gregory, David Unsworth avoids him altogether and Duncan Ferguson becomes the first (and last) player to represent Newcastle United with an Everton crest tattooed on them. There's also some great trivia, hilarious anecodotes and a slightly sombre greatest ever Premier League Cameroonian for reasons that will become apparent. Enjoyed the show? Here's another chance to hear my interview with Jimmy Bullard from season five.It was back at the start of the pandemic lockdown that I chatted with Jimmy, who was surviving thanks to his love for landscape gardening. This gifted former footballer is now an insightful and ebullient media personality, and he describes signing for boyhood heroes West Ham, the genius of Paulo Di Canio, Pep, Zizou and Juan Román Riquelme, and gives keen analysis about how speed of thought sets the greats apart from the rest.Subscribe to The Big Interview YouTube channel Hosted on Acast. Host Carl Jones is joined by former Barnsley and Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Wilson to discuss his career in football and the Premier League. A player at Hillsborough during the inaugural season of the Premiership, he'd later drop down to Division One where he'd lead Barnsley to their maiden season in the top flight and very nearly keep them there. He'd later take the reins at Sheffield Wednesday and was on the sidelines as his star player Paulo Di Canio pushed referee Paul Alcock to the floor and left the field in disgrace, never to wear the blue and white stripes of the Owls again. He discusses all of that, plus scoring in a Wembley cup final for Luton, the reasons he never went into international management with Northern Ireland and what Christmas is like for players and managers. We also find out who you voted for as the Premier League era's greatest Belarussian from last week's show. You can order a signed copy of Danny's autobiography here: https://www.morganlawrence.co.uk/product/i-get-knocked-down-danny-wilson/ Enjoyed the show? Host Carl Jones is joined live from Qatar by Sky Sports journalist and Sheffield Wednesday fan Joe Rawson. Recorded in December 2022 while Joe was reporting back from the Qatar World Cup, we discuss the character building experience that was supporting Sheffield Wednesday in the late 90s and early 00s, including being at Hillsborough for Paulo Di Canio's infamous push on referee Paul Alcock. We cover Joe's career path from volunteering at his local radio station to Soccer Saturday, reflect on the lost potential of England's golden generation, what it's like to work at a World Cup with a difference and remember the time he had to fill half an hour of radio airtime during an extended stoppage while providing a match commentary. Surely every broadcaster's worst nightmare... Joe also chooses the matches he'd take with him to his deserted island and helps choose the Premier League's greatest ever Belarussian. As ever, the choice is somewhat limited... Enjoyed the show? Please subscribe, leave us a 5* review and pass the pod to anyone who you think will enjoy it. Well…our Chris Wynn sat down to chat with one of the classiest defenders Sunderland have ever signed, embarking on a journey through the life and career of the absolutely f***in delightful Emerson 'Paredão' Thome! What's the crack? The journey from Porto Alegre; what made a young Emerson - raised in Brazilian football's golden era - want to play a more direct, combative and aggressive style? Batismo de fogo - The fight to stand out in a crowd of 700 hopefuls in the vast youth trials of Brazilian giants Internacional, and the influence of the Grenal on his young mind; Moving away from his family and friends to fight for a career in Europe, starting with trying to get the attention of the biggest sides in Portugal's Primeira Liga; Accepting the challenge set by a typically bullish Ron Atkinson at Sheffield Wednesday - with assistance from handy personal interpreter Paulo Di Canio - and proving he had what it took to play the English game; Frustrations with what is in his opinion key to the defensive partnership - communication - and his defining role in the Wednesday escape, as well as his move to Stamford Bridge; The arrival on Wearside as Peter Reid looked to strengthen the side for what would be one of the best seasons in living memory for many Sunderland fans - did he know exactly what was expected of him? His love of the club and it's supporters, the exact moment he knew he wanted to play for us and his favourite memories of his time at the Stadium of Light; The best characters he met along the way, his love for Julio, Reidy, Sacko, Quinny and SKP; His struggle with injuries, playing through the pain barrier and maintaining his positive attitude; His career since leaving Wearside, his work for the Red Bull group and his current role in both Europe and Brazil; All this and much more! He's not going to lie to you… HA'WAY THE LADS! #SAFC #EFL #EFLChampionship #EmersonThome Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

This is it lads and lasses - The Big Match! Can we do it? Can we overcome? Will this be our year? When are too many question marks considered too many? Can you feel the burning anticipation? Well perhaps there's a cream/ointment for that.Yes - SAFC return to action against fierce local rivals Spennymoor Town in a match of not two, but three halves - such is the competitive intensity of the tie. Knowing all this, our resident Deep Diver and walking Sunlun fact file - Mr Chris Wynn - decided to pull in a local lad who knows a thing or two about today's opposition... then spent an hour or so avoiding talking about the match/training exercise itself as we go back through his memories of Joe Royle, Chris Turner, Big Mick McCarthy, Keano, Quinny, Paulo Di Canio and many more of the characters that both helped and hindered the Shotton-born MLF's career... We are of course speaking to Mr Tommy Miller - the current manager of Spenny, and former Sunderland, Ipswich and Hartlepool midfielder. Featuring:Memories of Roker Park as a bairn; When did Tommy start following the Lads? The old YTS scheme; We've not heard a single former player tell us there was anything wrong with it - would some lads coming through in this era perhaps benefit from a similar youth experience?Tommy played under some of the biggest and most notorious personalities in the modern (depending on your age like) English game; Who did he learn the most from throughout his long professional career, and who did he think should've been given more of a chance/helping hand when they needed one?His time at Sunderland; Like every single one of us, Tommy wanted to play for his local side, and he finally got the chance… so what was life like at the club during the frankly insane couple of years he was here and why does he think things didn't turn out quite the way he wanted them to?Today's earth shattering fixture; Is he just happy football is back? All this and a hell of a lot more, as there's absolutely nothing else occurring today in the footballing world. So strap yourself in, hire an interpreter if you struggle with northern accents vs zoom technology, and enjoy the ride! It's Miller Time!*Hahahahahaha couldn't resist See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Jimmy Bullard's on-field and latterly on-screen personality is that of an easy-going joker, but that is only a conscious extension of his true self. He is also a brilliant soccer analyst, and as a talented midfielder he was frustrated by English football's failure to adopt the Continental passing game. Roy Hodgson was the only manager who understood him. He's glad to see things changing, thanks mainly to the influence of Pep.When he joined West Ham the club was full of crazy personalities, not least Paulo Di Canio and John Moncur. Paulo had such charisma that he changed the culture of the entire club.Oh – and there's brilliant stuff about Soccer AM, and Jimmy gives us an incredible behind-the-scenes insight into creating magical television.EnjoyGraham.
