Send us a Text Message.Mistreatment of migrant workers, especially those forced to work in hot, dangerous conditions, created huge headlines in the run-up to the Qatar World Cup in 2022, thanks in part to the work of today's guest—journalist Pramod Acharya. Pramod's subsequent reporting also made the news globally. Also done in collaboration with journalists around the world, it spotlighted the conditions faced by Nepalis and others working in Amazon warehouses in Saudi Arabia, and led to Amazon changing some of its work practices. For that reporting, Pramod and his colleagues have received numerous nominations and awards, including—for the Amazon work—the Excellence in International Reporting award from the Asian American Journalists Association and the Human Rights Press Award, from Human Rights Watch and others. Today he'll tell us how and where he got his start in journalism, how migration from Nepal has changed in the decade since he started investigating it, and the role that the media might play in making positive change. Send us a Text Message.I want to start this week with a shout out to Tanka, who shared our 3 latest episodes on LinkedIn, including his favourite. His top choice was our chat with Raj and Sunita, who met, online, while working in Gulf countries, got married in Nepal and are now living here again, at least temporarily. Although they're now pregnant, they appear destined to be a migration family, as Raj is now trying to get a work visa for South Korea.Do you have a favourite episode of the show? If so, why not let us know via LinkedIn or other social channels. You can also text the show by clicking the link above. If you're in the US or Canada it's free, it costs 6 rupees from Nepal, and outside of these areas normal charges would apply. This week's news about migration includes the Government of Nepal recruiting 500 men and women to work in Israel as assistants in long-term care centres. There have been some online protests about the government working with Israel because of its ongoing attack on Gaza, but I don't expect that will affect applicationsComing up next week we'll be speaking with award-winning journalist Pramod Acharya, who reports about migration, including human rights abuses, of Nepali and other workers, during the building of World Cup facilities in Qatar. He also worked with other media to uncover abusive practices in Amazon warehouses in Saudi Arabia. The realisation that Saudi Arabia is not Qatar may seem obvious, but it has significant meaning for the lessons rights activists and others draw from the Qatar World Cup as they prepare for a Saudi-hosted tournament in 2034.
There will be no more of relieved man in London today than Mauricio Pochettino who saw his Chelsea side thump Middlesborough and move onto the Carabao Cup final. Is this tournament his lifeline and could it turn their season around? We also take a look at just why the January transfer window has had less movement than Marley during a Sunday League game - are clubs that fearful of the FFP sanctions? And we finish with a quiz - but with a special twist, featuring FIFA president Gianni Infantino's infamous ‘I feel' speech at the 2022 Qatar World Cup! When I was the sports reporter for BBC Radio 1 for 8 years, I spent a lot of time talking to and hearing from an exhaustive list of Premier League managers. One of them stood out above the rest for entertainment value – and that was Ian Holloway when he was in charge of Blackpool FC.Ian Holloway is clearly a naturally funny man – and he also has a depth and emotional sensitivity that you can't help but warm to.A driving theme of this podcast is ego – and not letting the idea you have about yourself get in the way. Ian opens up about how hard he has been on himself throughout his life, and self-critical – so much so that he once had to take down all the mirrors in his house because he didn't like looking at himself. We also talk about emotional intelligence – and the time Ian went on a BBC programme called Stress Test to learn how to calm his temper down, at a time when showing vulnerability like that wasn't as in vogue as it is now. Ian shares about how his experiences have helped him grow and evolve, not least looking after his wife through serious illness as well as raising three profoundly deaf children. As he says, we all get challenges and difficulties in life – and it's about how we cope with them that matters. In this episode we discuss:Relationships are the most important thingThe best phrase for dealing with someone who is giving you stickEgo and how it leads us astrayEmotional intelligence and what Ian Holloway learned going on the BBC programme The Stress Test Some of the biggest challenges in Ian's life and how we all have difficulties, and it's how we react that's importantWhen Ian's Dad died – and the transcendental experiences Ian subsequently hadSelf-care and the importance of doing something for yourselfRecognising the feelings underneath anger – like a fear of failure or not being good enoughThe wisdom of Graham TaylorLaughter is the best medicineIan ranting about the Qatar World Cup: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k6PacW2fJV0Ian's book: How to Be a Football Manager - Enter the hilarious and crazy world of the gafferhttps://www.waterstones.com/book/how-to-be-a-football-manager-enter-the-hilarious-and-crazy-world-of-the-gaffer/ian-holloway/9781472298591**MyTwitter: https://twitter.com/simonmundieInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/simonmundie/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/simon-mundie-89379114/And for the 'Mundie on Monday' newsletter - featuring three of the best Life Lessons from four years and 200 of these conversations - head to simonmundie.com (where you can also drop me an email)Please do share this episode - it makes a big difference in helping people find this podcast.Thank you. In the United States, the Federal Reserve has left interest rates unchanged for the first time in more than a year. However, its latest economic forecasts suggest that more rate hikes lie ahead. Despite the assurances given by the Qatar government and FIFA, a new report says “labour exploitation of migrant workers rampant during Qatar World Cup” and some workers were left unable to pay off the debts they built up to get their jobs in the first place and that many felt unable to complain for fear of reprisal. And the frenzy stoked by the start of the singer's world tour is seen driving up prices in Sweden. She is apparently the queen of inflation after the rise of demand for hotels and restaurant meals, according to the country's economic statistics.

It's 12 years since Qatar was announced as the host country for the men's World Cup football tournament. Awarding the event to Qatar was a controversial decision at the time and still is, on several levels. The country has strict anti-LGBTQ+ laws, and women's rights are the subject of ongoing debate. More recently, treatment of the 30,000 migrant labourers, who built many of the tournament's stadiums and infrastructure has been severely criticised. James Reynolds has been talking to fans around the globe, including gay rights activists, and hears from women living in Qatar, as the eyes of the world turn to their country.
