The Penguin Project is a 20 year old program that promotes theater for everyone by putting students who have disabilities at center stage in a shortened Broadway musical. The Penguin Project was conceived by Dr. Andrew Morgan to give children with disabilities an opportunity to participate in the performing arts. “Dr. Andy” is a developmental pediatrician and the former Head of the Division of Child Development at the University of Illinois in Peoria. "So Dr. Andy Morgan is the founder of the program. And his belief was that penguins, while they can't fly, they can still soar. And that is true with our performers. While they may not be able to do some of the everyday tasks that you or I may be able to do, they can still soar in other ways. And one of the ways is on stage. And these kiddos, let me tell you, are incredible, "said Director Matt Spencer. He created The Penguin Project recognizing that theater not only provides children with a valuable recreational experience and an opportunity to display their creative talents, but also enhances social interaction, communication skills, assertiveness, and self-esteem. The Penguin Project strives to demonstrate that individuals with disabilities are fully capable of participating in community activities with the same dedication and enthusiasm as others, if given opportunity and support. Today's guest is Jamie. She runs the local chapter for Penguin Project. Penguin Project was established in 2004 it has evolved into a National program, with chapter sites throughout the United States. The program provides a supportive environment for children with disabilities to explore their creative talents.  It has also demonstrated that participation in the performing arts has therapeutic value by enhancing social interaction, communication skills, self-confidence and self-esteem. The impact of the program has reached beyond the stage to create a social network for children who previously had very few friends and limited social opportunities. For more information or how you can help support this project click the link below: https://penguinproject.org/ Follow them on their Facebook page: MTCT's Penguin Project. The project aired on Channel 5 news to give you a little snippet about what they do:https://www.newschannel5.com/news/they-give-children-with-disabilities-a-chance-to-perform-live-theater-but-the-group-needs-a-stage

One of the things we have gotten wrong for too long has been our understanding of and, consequently, treatment of people with disabilities. Although it is not happening broadly enough or quickly enough, efforts to correct our understanding and our behavior are taking place. One of those efforts is The Penguin Project which is a nation-wide organization and effort to involve people with disabilities in musical theater. My guest for this episode is here to discuss her work with the project. Lisa Heath Jinkins (Choreographer for Golden Isles Penguin Project in Brunswick, GA) began her career as a professional modern dancer in New York City in 1985. She had the opportunity to perform with many top choreographers and companies, including The Martha Graham Dance Company, and at some of the larger theatres in Manhattan: New York City Center and The Joyce Theater, to name two. Lisa met and married Jim Jinkins in NY, and they have two children, Rose and Heath. During this time, Lisa had the opportunity to write 5 children's books for The Disney Company, based on the animated series “PB&J Otter” created by Jim Jinkins. That led to co-creating “JoJo's Circus” for The Disney Channel, and writing scripts for “Pinky Dinky Doo”, an animated television series created by Jim. In 2010, the family moved to Brunswick, GA, where they continued to be involved in the arts, performing in various local productions on stage, and working behind the scenes, as well. In 2016 Lisa was asked to be the Choreographer for a new venture: Golden Isles Penguin Project.  The Penguin Project® is a musical theater production that casts children and young adults with disabilities in all roles. All sing, dance and act in the show. Those individuals (Artists) will get assistance from on-stage peers (Mentors). And after a one year break in 2023, Lisa has been asked to return to help with Meredith Wilson's “The Music Man, Jr.!" She can't wait! To learn more about The Penguin Project and efforts like these go to the following links: Golden Isles Penguin Project: https://goldenislesarts.org/programs/penguin-project/ The Penguin Project:  https://penguinproject.org/ The intro and outro music for this episode is from a clip of a song called 'Father Let Your Kingdom Come' which is found on The Porter's Gate Worship Project Work Songs album and is used by permission by The Porter's Gate Worship Project.

The Penguin Project is a magical and touching celebration of the human spirit that all unfolds on stage. Students across the district (4th - 12th grade) perform in the Broadway musical, Annie, Jr. The roles are filled by young artists with developmental disabilities such as autism, intellectual disabilities, visual or hearing impairment and other neurological disorders. Peer-mentors volunteer to work side-by-side with the special needs students from rehearsals to the final performance. Providing access to theater, The Penguin Project demonstrates that the special challenges of a disability should not handicap a child’s ability to participate in life’s experiences. This inclusion program provides a supportive environment for children of all abilities to explore their creative talents. The impact of this national program has reached beyond the stage to bring communities together for a wonderful cause. Corsicana ISD Special Programs, community volunteers, CISD staff, parents, students and numerous others have joined together under the direction of Cran Dodds to make this program a reality.
