We learn about two very different magazines this episode, the common thread being events and tenth anniversaries. After Jeremy and Danielle give an update on the 10th anniversary edition of magCulture Live, London, and discuss a few current magazines favourites from our shelves (including Disco Pogo, WePresent and Litt), Jeremy talks to Penny Martin, editor-in-chief of The Gentlewoman. Their 28th issue has just been published, but the focus of the conversation is The Gentlewoman Club, which launched ten years ago. Penny explains its origins and selects some highlight events from that first decade. Then we switch to an interview recorded live at the tenth anniversary edition of the Indiecon festival in Hamburg. Jeremy spoke to two of the team from Indian art and design newspaper The Irregular Times—co-founder Tarini Sethi and features editor Vasudhaa Narayanan. They discuss the Indian indie scene and the origins and development of their publication. We're grateful to our friends at Park Communications for their support of the magCulture Podcast. A wide-ranging conversation with Penny Martin, editor-in-chief of iconic women’s magazine The Gentlewoman. Widely recognised as the definitive style title for discerning women, as The Gentlewoman’s founding editor, Penny is responsible for the exacting editorial standards and refined taste that have made it so influential. Before being tapped by the publishers of Fantastic Man to head up the magazine back in 2010, Penny was previously a curator at the National Museum of Photography, Film & Television and chair of fashion imagery at University of the Arts, London. She also contributes to numerous international publications and consults for several brands, including the likes of Miu Miu and Nike, and is a trustee of The National Trust for Scotland. In this episode we discuss how the magazine has evolved since its debut in 2010 and going against the grain of women’s glossies, as well as the magazine’s driving ethos, the nuts and bolts of the editorial process, and some of The Gentlewoman’s most iconic covers to date. Episode 1-For most young dancers, the journey begins with recreational classes held after school or on Saturday mornings. For the vast majority of recreational dancers, the fun they have learning to dance is enhanced by the friendships and a shared unique camaraderie bond. Almost by osmosis they also obtain social skills and grow in confidence. In this first episode of Growing through Dance, my guest is the talented Dr Penny Martin, whom I have been privileged to know since her childhood and to have played a small part in her journey as she was a founder member of CCDA (Cirencester Creative Dance Academy). Penny had so many dance related memories to discuss that we had to split the interview to two episodes. Episode 1 Penny recalls her dance activities from the age of 4 to 19, whilst episode 2 discusses the life skills she gained.

Our latest Podcast, recorded at the magCulture Shop in London, is a bumper edition that hangs loosely around the theme of change. The episode opens with Jeremy and Liv flicking through recent new mags, starting with The Face, freshly relaunched after a 15 year hiatus. Can it possibly live up to expectations? The pair also look at this year's print edition of gal-dem and the exciting new Buffalo Zine, and are joined briefly by Erik from Lyrics As Poetry before heading off down a crazy magazine archeaology rabbit hole with guest Danny No. The ups and downs of the contemporary women's magazine are reflected in the next two guests: Marie O'Riordan, editor of Marie Claire from 2001-2008, reflects on the demise of the magazine's print edition. And Penny Martin, editor-in-chief of The Gentlewoman, discusses her magazine's tenth anniversary. Both highlight the need for character and USP in a magazine. There's just time for a Back Issue – the first ever edition of Berlin's 032c, a very different publication to today's glossy quarterly – before the episode signs off with news of changes of our own. Today I’m with celebrated Australian choreographer, and now choreographer/director of the upcoming production “Catch Me If You Can” - Cameron Mitchell. Cameron has many strings to his bow, he is a performer, choreographer, teacher and now a director, all of which could be preceded by any glowing superlative you can think of. Today he talks about the show, his past, present and future and what it feels like to make the transition from performer to choreographer to choreographer/director. Cameron is an absolute delight and I doubt you will meet anyone more passionate about his craft. “Catch Me If You Can -The Musical” is based on the 2002 movie of the same name which in turn was based on the 1980 autobiography of Frank Abgnale Jr – a genius con artist that managed to con millions of dollars by faking it in professions he had never trained to do. With a swinging 60’s score by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, it sounds like it’s going to be a cracker. "It's not entirely a surprise, but it's a delightful provocation..." Penny Martin is the editor of The Gentlewoman, the phenomenally successful magazine that fills its pages with fascinating women and discerning fashion, all presented with a wry smile that sets it apart from the rest of the newsstand. Renowned for its iconic covers that have featured a wide range of stars including Angela Lansbury, Beyoncé and Simone Biles, it rejects standard tools like cover lines and garish colours, instead using characterful portrait photography and subtle design touches to create an impact. In this conversation Penny speaks about the slow-burn process of choosing their cover stars, the trust they place in their collaborators, and the way she knows that they've got a cover right. ("A magazine cover works for us if I end up shrieking with laughter every time I see it.")

Penny Martin, editor of The Gentlewoman, and Charlie Brinkhurst-Cuff, deputy editor of gal-dem magazine, discuss the agendas of their respective publications and the independent magazine landscape, which is vibrant and culturally significant. You love opera and would love to nurture such love in a loved one: music critics Norman Lebrecht and Alexandra Coghlan are at hand to help, offering their choices of a recording of an opera to entice the reluctant and a cracker available on a DVD. This is a new musical with songs and a score by Joe Stilgoe (yes, son of...), which looks beyond Walt Disney to Rudyard Kipling and his stories about Mowgli, the boy brought up by wolves, and finds in them themes for our times: the complexities of cultural identity in a diverse world, what the Law of the Jungle means and where the Jungle might be. And Joe performs the song he has written for Baloo the Bear, live in the Front Row studio.Presenter: Samira Ahmed Producer: Julian May.
