Kate Molleson explores the maverick spirit, fierce passions and phenomenal twilight years of Leoš JanáčekLeoš Janáček was a true Czech original. He heard music in the way people talk on the streets, loved the local and made it universal - pouring his “speech melodies” into pioneering, devastating operas, and writing some of the most intimate confessionals in instrumental music. His life also came with a major plot twist – after years of toiling away unappreciated, he suddenly found fame in his 60s. Instead of winding down, Janáček revved up. This week, Kate Molleson explores his maverick spirit, his fierce passions, and the phenomenal flood of inspiration of his twilight years.Music Featured:Sinfonietta (Fanfare) The Wild Duck In the Mists (2nd mvt, Molto adagio) The Fiddler's Child Songs of Hradčany (The Weeping Fountain) Jenůfa, Act II (Jenůfa's Prayer) Moravian Folk Poetry in Song, JW V/2 (No 2, Constancy) On the Overgrown Path (Our Evenings; A Blown Away Leaf) Diary of One Who Disappeared (Nos 19-22) Katya Kabanova: Act II Scene 2 "Jste to vy, Katěrino Petrovno?"…."Choď si, dívka, do času" The Cunning Little Vixen Act II “Fox Goldenstripe…..That's how it is!” Quartet No 1 ‘Kreutzer Sonata' (1st & 2nd mvts) March of the Blue Birds Říkadla - Nursery Rhymes (excerpt) Lachian Dances (Nos 3-6) Mládí On the Overgrown Path (No 9, In Tears) Pohádka – Fairytale Glagolitic Mass (Intrada) The Excursions of Mr Broucek Suite (The Moon Waltz) 1905 Sonata Capriccio (2nd & 3rd mvt) Glagolitic Mass (excerpt) Moravian Love Songs (No 10 ‘Love') Intimate Sketches (Waiting for You!) We're back with season 6 and have a jam-packed episode for you to dive straight in to! Rhiannon's reading has taken a baby book and nursery rhyme themed nose dive, but she was rescued by the brilliance of John Boyne in his stunning novel The Heart's Invisible Furies. Alex was moved by the tender and tragic love story set against the brutality of World War II in Alice Winn's In Memoriam. We both get our teeth stuck in to the somewhat unanswerable questions we were left with, after watching Netflix's tour de force, Adolescence, as well as some lighter tangents featuring David Tennant, potatoes and of course, this week's Who'd a Thunk. Unfortunately when Matt decides to replace its power source with a banana, things take a disastrous turn. Will they escape the poetic curse, or are they doomed to rhyme forever? I don't know because I'm in India relaxing, oops, I mean, writing my comedy show. PLUS We also have sponsor suggestions, a bum parade and the world de-butt of Rich's new poem ‘PUNKtuation'. Calling all Faithfuls and Traitors…We're journeying to the Scottish highlands for a special ‘Traitors' takeover episode of Celeb Catch Up. Season 3 ‘Traitors' cast member Carolyn interviews fellow castmate Tom Sandoval to talk about his recent breakout episode. Sandoval's got people talking this week and he's not concerned whether it's good or bad, he's just happy he's back in most of the cast's good graces. Carolyn and Tom recap last week's episode and share thoughts on the musical challenge. Tom is quoted for saying “he's the most musically inclined” of the whole cast and think's he really carried his team. Carolyn is encouraging of Tom's talents, but isn't about to sugarcoat anything. They reminisce on children's nursery rhymes and Tom gives his best rendition of ‘Ring Around The Rosie' even though no one asked. They get into the difference between competition shows ‘Big Brother' VS ‘Survivor' and why Sandoval tripped up on his words…sorry Sandy there's a big difference between ~cheater~ and ~traitor~. It's a treacherous episode. Watch out for the episode on YouTube Big Wigs and we'll see you back here next week.

This week, Stauney and Sadie introduce the dark origins of nursery rhymes. While these seemingly innocent songs have become a staple of childhood, many were born from grim histories of plagues, political unrest, and even tragedy. From "Ring Around the Roses," believed to reference the Black Death, to "Humpty Dumpty," originally a cannon that fell during battle, and "Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary," thought to reflect religious persecution during Queen Mary I's reign, these rhymes hold hidden stories far darker than their playful tunes suggest. Join Stauney and Sadie as they delve into the twisted roots of these timeless verses, uncovering the unsettling truths behind the rhymes that shaped generations. Learn more about your ad choices. Ah, the wonder of comforting childhood rhymes–such sweet innocent word play to amuse, soothe, and educate young children. At least that is what we all thought until Jon and Kurt did some digging, some intensive research, some literary forensic analysis. What they found is unsettling to say the least. Turns out, some of our most beloved nursery rhymes have morbid, lascivious, and/or creepy origins. Leave all your peaceful childhood memories behind, and join the boys as they dig into the true history of some iconic rhymes.
Looking back at her wildly successful and always adventurous career up to this point, it feels inevitable that Lisa Loeb was always going to be a songwriter and have a music career. But young Lisa probably could have done any creative job well. She grew up surrounded by music, yes, but she also had a passion for theater, and got her degree in comparative literature. It was her theater, voice acting and film side hustles that led Lisa to her first big break. Lisa's friend Ethan Hawke shared her song “Stay” with Ben Stiller, who included the song in the soundtrack for the film ‘Reality Bites.' “Stay” was a massive hit, and Lisa was the first-ever artist to have a #1 hit on the Billboard charts without a recording contract. The second act of Loeb's career is the main focus of our conversation. This chapter in the book of Lisa Loeb is all about… children's music! As her latest album, ‘That's What It's All About,' demonstrates, Loeb has managed to keep playfulness and curiosity at the center of her life well into adulthood. She has figured out the delicate balance of making music for kids that adults can relate to as well. Happy memories of music from her own childhood, as well as nods to her elders, make this new record a sonic storybook that listeners of all ages will enjoy.Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknewsHelp produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/Interested in sponsoring us? Many of the songs we sing to our children are hundreds of years old, with their original meanings obscured by history. In this episode, producer Leila Battison takes Dallas on a dark, surprising journey through history's most famous nursery rhymes and lullabies, and up through the “Baby Sharks” and “Happy Songs” of today. Along the way, they share the songs they've made up for their own children, and explore why this music is just as important to parents as it is to kids.
