Killer Instinct With MIKE NESS From SOCIAL DISTORTION

HEAVY Music Interviews

Interview by Kris PetersThis Friday, May 8, California's legendary iconic band Social Distortion release their eighth studio album, Born To Kill, via Epitaph Records.Born To Kill is more than the conclusion to a 15-year wait between Social Distortion albums, it's a revelation: 11 songs of pure, unadulterated rock 'n' roll fury, joy and catharsis, all imbued with the signature blend of defiance and world-weariness that has made founder Mike Ness a poet and sage to the dispossessed for more than 40 years. The first Social Distortion album since Ness' recovery from a bout with cancer, Born To Kill brims with aggressive optimism. The album wastes no time letting the listener know where its heart is, with its title track and mission statement dropping nods to Lou Reed (Rock 'n' Roll Animal gonna come your way!) and Iggy and the Stooges (“The agenda is yeah to Search and Destroy”) and a homage to David Bowie (“It's a Rock 'n' Roll Suicide”) following a few songs later on Partners In Crime. This is a man, a band and a record that wear their influences proudly while creating timeless anthems and ballads that both chart Social Distortion's path forward and celebrate its storied past: Tonight and The Way Things Were are emotionally charged reminiscences in the vein of classics like Story of My Life from the band's eponymous 1990 breakthrough and I Was Wrong from 1996's White Light, White Heat, White Trash, the latter containing a potent distillation of the Social D ethos: "I wrote a song with a stolen riff / If you ain't got a song you ain't got shit.”HEAVY sat down for an interesting chat with Ness about the new album, the history of Social Distortion and much, much more. One of the early questions was about expectation and if he felt any outside pressure due to the length of time since 2011's Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes?"I mean, a little bit," Ness measured. "I mean, I didn't mean for 15 years to go by, but a lot of things in life came up in the last 15 years. But I did know it was definitely a thought in the forefront of my mind that when it was time to make this record, it couldn't be a sleeper. It needed to be... it needed to get people's attention."We ask Mike to dive deeper into the musicality on Born To Kill and what he was going for this time around."With every record you want to try and reinvent yourself," he replied, pausing to reflect. "But for me it was as simple as just going back to the late 70s and the music I was listening to, just to inspire me. It was a chance to pay homage, if you will, to some of my idols and play around with some different grooves and rhythms. I tried to go back to a little bit more primitive style. Primitive is good (smiles)."Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Latin Grammy–nominated musician and debut picture book author Sonia de los Santos joins Jed to talk about birds, borders, and the magic of bilingual stories. Sonia shares the inspiration behind her new picture book La Golondrina, based on her song of the same name. The story follows a young girl who becomes fascinated with swallow birds while visiting her grandmother, and slowly begins to see her own migration story reflected in their long journeys. Sonia connects this to her real life, growing up in Monterrey, Mexico, then moving to the New York City area to pursue musical theater, eventually finding her calling making music for children and families. She and Jed swap bird stories (including a backyard turkey named Stella), talk about performing in less‑than‑glamorous multipurpose rooms, and celebrate the joy of seeing every child's face during school concerts. Sonia explains how her music evolved into books, how it feels to let an illustrator "finish" her story visually, and why she's committed to creating bilingual, welcoming spaces where all kids and families feel seen. They dive into big themes—migration, identity, empathy, and the courage to speak a second language (and make mistakes out loud!). Sonia also teases that La Golondrina is the first in a three‑book series, "Books That Sing / Libros que cantan", complete with lyrics, chords, and a QR code so families can read and sing together. Plus, we take a listen back to a conversation we had with children's music legend Raffi during his tour to promote his Nursery Rhymes for Kinder Times project and his lifelong commitment to honoring and respecting children.

Many times the way and artist finds their way onto this podcast is from their publicist or someone else on their team reaching out to me, or vice versa. Sometimes I might bump into an artist at a show or festival and hit them up for an impromptu interview then and there, but that is rare. Rarer still is the scenario where I came in contact with western Kentucky artist Kelsey Waldon, which was through writer and editor Garret Woodward, who acted as go-between to ask about an interview. Kelsey was on tour in our region and hoped to get some coverage for the WNCW audience, and I immediately jumped on the opportunity. After speaking her on a video call from her hotel room in Chattanooga TN, I took the first part of her interview and aired that on my show on radio; the bulk of that conversation comes to light here in this episode. Kelsey Waldon (photo: ©Alysse Gafkjen 2025) There is a deep well of emotion and a complex tapestry of experience that Kelsey Waldon draws from in her singular style of country music. Rooted firmly in her native western Kentucky, she calls the Nashville area home now, and in our conversation we talk about how her rural upbringing in an unusual setting shaped her, her longtime friendship with fellow Kentuckian S.G. Goodman, her often overlooked college degree in songwriting, and we go into detail about some of her latest songs, sampling many from her latest album Every Ghost. Songs heard in this episode:“Ghost Of Myself” by Kesley Waldon, from Every Ghost“Ramblin' Woman” by Kelsey Waldon, from Every Ghost, excerpt“Nursery Rhyme” by Kelsey Waldon, from Every Ghost, excerpt“A Robin Built A Nest On Daddy's Grave” by Ralph Stanley, from While the Ages Roll On, excerpt“Hello Stranger” by Kelsey Waldon featuring S.G. Goodman, from There's Always A Song, excerpt“Comanche” by Kelsey Waldon, from Every GhostThank you for stopping by, and we hope you can spread the word about this series and help us reach more music fans just like yourself. Please take a moment and give us a top rating on your podcast platform of choice, and where you can, a review. Doing either, and especially both, boosts the ranking and therefore the visibility of this series to all the other music fans who also follow podcasts. This is Southern Songs and Stories, where our quest is to explore and celebrate the unfolding history and culture of music rooted in the American South, and going beyond to the styles and artists that it inspired and informed. - Joe Kendrick

Instead of diving straight into a new adventure, you are going to get to hear our game master Ty and our guest player Andrea do a "Session 0", where they discuss the game they'll be playing and then create Andrea's character, who will star in the upcoming adventure! Lucille Clifton survived cancer four times. She maintained that her mother would not let her die until she had finished her work on Earth. That work? Writing poetry. A year before she passed away, Lucille Clifton was honored at the Furious Flower Poetry Conference at James Madison University where she spoke to With Good Reason's Sarah McConnell about inheriting her mother's rage and commitment to writing. And: A whole lot can happen in a Southampton County minute. Latorial Faison's Pulitzer Prize nominated poetry collection Nursery Rhymes in Black animates the education of her rural Virginia childhood. Later in the show: In 1941, Remica Bingham Risher's paternal great-great-great grandmother Minnie and maternal grandmother Mary never met— but they had been within one mile of each other under extraordinary circumstances. Minnie was interviewed for the Works Progress Administration's Slave Narratives project on her Petersburg front porch. Just down the road, Mary was taken to the Central Lunatic Asylum for the Colored Insane for “water in the brain” – what we know now as postpartum depression. Nearly a century later, in Remica Bingham-Risher's Room Swept Home, they meet.

(00:00:00) First, Mi Xian and Mark Fazollah of Spotlight PA join us to discuss their reporting on undercounted and misreported rapes in the State College area. Their investigation reveals how gaps in data, institutional practices, and reporting systems can obscure the reality of sexual violence. They walk us through what they uncovered, why these discrepancies matter, and how communities are affected when the numbers meant to protect them fall short. (00:22:21) Then, we shift from modern reporting failures to the deep past with Chrissie Senecal, historian at Shippensburg University, for a journey into the origins and evolution of nursery rhymes. Chrissie explores how many familiar rhymes trace back to medieval Europe, shaped by the politics, fears, humor, and social tensions of their time. We dig into the “dark” or hidden meanings encoded in rhyme and rhythm, how these verses transformed from adult commentary to children’s entertainment, and why they’ve endured for centuries.
