You've likely heard that the fragrance business is booming, and this week, Alyssa sits down with one of the newest perfumers on the scene: Trey Taylor, founder of Serviette, which launched earlier this year. Trey began his career by climbing the ranks in independent fashion media and earning a masters in fashion journalism at Central Saint Martins — complete with stints at Dazed, Fantastic Man, Interview, and The Face — before pivoting into beauty, building his brand as a side project while keeping a full time job. Tune in for some incredible tales from Trey's time in editorial (and when he heard the death knell for his magazine career), as well as how his interest in fragrance piqued after writing an article about how celebrities smell; the challenges of being a niche brand in a massive market; what it was like learning the fragrance ropes from the legendary Marissa Zappas; the culture of Fragrantica and online perfume fandom; the process behind formulating the first four fragrances in his line, as well as its visual identity; why cultural curiosity is the driving force behind Serviette; why being delusional is important for success, and much more. This is a special live episode, hosted at Storysmith to mark the launch of Strange Relations by Ralf Webb. We think about the contemporary crisis in masculinity through the lives and work of mid-century American writers John Cheever, Tennessee Williams, Carson McCullers and James Baldwin, considering how their legacies might inform the current moment. We speak about the censorship of radical elements of these writers' work, including elements of their politics, queerness and intimacy, and consider the role of their interpersonal and intertextual relationships in understanding their work. We speak about what it means to reclaim space in the canon and expanding terms such as bisexuality, as well as notions of boyishness. We discuss the relationship between poetry and prose, the use of novelistic techniques in non-fiction and the ethical responsibility involved in writing about well-known literary figures. Ralf Webb is a poet, writer and editor based in Bristol. His debut collection of poems, Rotten Days in Late Summer was published by Penguin in 2021, and was shortlisted for the Felix Dennis Prize for Best First Collection. Webb's poetry and critical writing has appeared in Granta, the Guardian, the London Review of Books, Fantastic Man, and The Poetry Review. He currently manages a creative writing mentorship programme in collaboration with Folio and First Story, which supports school-age writers from low-income backgrounds. Fashion journalist, writer, and broadcaster Tim Blanks has had a front-row seat to many defining, pivotal moments in the fashion industry since 1985. Throughout his prolific career, he has witnessed countless transformational trends, with his byline appearing in international magazines and newspapers, including Vogue, GQ, Financial Times, Fantastic Man, and Interview. Previously, host of the globally syndicated television show Fashion File for a 20-year stint, he was as well editor-at-large at style.com. Today, he is editor-at-large of Business of Fashion and a celebrated author and contributor to various monographs and volumes on fashion royalty, such as Anna Sui, Dolce & Gabbana, Alexander McQueen, and Michael Roberts. In this lively conversation with Christopher Michael, he contextualizes trends related to everything from branding and sustainability to creative talents and human needs, which attract people to the art of fashion. Tim's insights reflect a unique perspective on the industry's evolution and a deep, intuitive understanding of the vulnerabilities and desire for validation that drive even the most successful industry icons. Although Tim celebrates the fault lines he sees redefining today's fashion landscape with new inclusive language and geographic diversity, he also spotlights global issues such as social and environmental justice, prompting a reckoning of sorts within the fashion industry—and the world at large. Ultimately, it's all about keeping creatives relevant in an era of turbocharged change and adaptation. Episode Highlights: Starting out: Starting university at age 15 helped him evade bullying and launched his experience of making “all those mistakes that change your life.” Connecting with fashion: Tim's limited exposure to fashion while coming into adulthood in New Zealand when he realized images had the power to shock or amaze. First rung: A detour into filmmaking in Canada eventually morphed into freelance writing and, ultimately, a full-time gig at a fashion magazine and a high-visibility role hosting the global TV show Fashion File. Staying fresh: Keeping something of an outsider's perspective has helped blunt any cynicism about the fashion industry. Inside-outsider: The curiosity—and an eye inspired by filmmaking—has defined Tim's unique approach to fashion's personalities and untold stories. Reflecting and projecting: Fashion has a dual role as a mirror of culture and a harbinger of social trends on the horizon. Community of misfits: Tim believes fashion has historically drawn outsiders, agitators, and visionaries into a tribe bound by creative energy. A circus. A roving family! Human longing: The “hole in our soul” Tim believes we are constantly trying to fill or offset with validation from our peers—an impulse at odds with how social media actually makes us feel. Stand-out moments: Witnessing an interview in which LouLou de la Falaise was the translator for a reluctant Yves St. Laurent; 90s runway shows that were cultural high points, including spectacular shows featuring Alexander McQueen, Jean Paul Gaultier, and Christian Lacroix; and getting the opportunity to talk to Helmut Lang for the first time. Assessing AI: Tim believes that ChatGPT and other machine learning could create informational bridges and—with good intent—positive, beneficial results. At odds: The challenge to reconcile environmentally wasteful “gigantism” and corporate sustainability in the billion-dollar corporate branding and production world. What's contemporary now? Simmering rage, confusion, chaos, fear, an urge to fight, and a puzzlingly benign (rather than punk) attitude in fashion in contrast to the climate crisis, political unrest, and pandemic fallout. What should be contemporary now? A revolutionary spirit to fuel change, even at great lengths. It's time for idealism coupled with pragmatism, expressing itself in action—with fashion playing a part.
If you ever wanna feel stupid or not crisp-and-clear, have a conversation with Jesse Kates of The Sexy Accident.Wow.I've been lucky to have a ton of tremendous and amazing people join me for episodes of the Badass Records podcast, but this guy...he just -- as the kids say -- hits different. You should -- were you so inclined -- check out his bandcamp, buy some of his merch', keep tabs on when his outfit's giggin' next, etc.Really great stuff.Jesse and I talked about a number of things, included in which were -- of course -- a few of his favorite albums. I botched things a touch, but they were these, nonetheless:Seamonsters, The Wedding Present (1991)The Cure's Wish (1992)Icky Mettle by Archers of Loaf (1993)Long Fin Killie's Houdini (1995)1972, Josh Rouse (2003), andQuadiliacha's Es Muerto (1997) (the one I botched)I hope you'll check out this chat; I thought it was awesome, but then again...I always do.Cheers.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the intro/outro audio. They are clips from a tune called, "Fantastic Man" by William Onyeabor. This, I found, on his 2013 record, World Psychedelic Classics 5: Who Is William Onyeabor? (c/o Luaka Bop, Inc.).

Jason Crombie is a writer and the Editor in Chief for Monster Children. I've been reading Monster Children for years whether it was for skateboarding, art, music, cars, girls, not porn, travel, design, photography, the list goes on. I have a stack of Monster Children in my USM Haller. No flex. Not porn. In 2003, Jason created the magazine Wooooo that featured Thurston Moore, Mark Gonzales, Zach Galifianakis, James Dean's roommate, and Michelle Williams, among other lesser-known individuals which would probably feature me at some point. Wooooo established Jason as someone able to conduct interviews and cobble sentences together, which resulted in real writing work. Then more work. My favorite part of his bio is: Jason mentions that he was able to quit his job at the dildo factory and begin living the frightening and unpredictable life of a freelance scribe. So that means I no longer work at the dildo factory as well. Jason contributed features and interviews to publications such as ID, Vice, Saturdays, Fantastic Man, V Magazine, and more. Jason also provided creative direction and copy for many brands, including Nike, Adidas, Canon, Vans, Burton, and Budweiser. In 2012, Jason became Editor in Chief of Monster Children magazine. Turns out he has been working on a non-fiction novel since 2017. This is one of the moments where I've known about Jason's work for years but never really mentioned it to anybody because nobody asks. I used to steal Monster Children's at Barnes and Noble but now I can afford them. Not a flex. Not porn. Does gay still have a place? Are our queer spaces safe? What does the future look like for queer spaces? Join us for a special conversation with Gay Bar author Jeremy Atherton on the state of the gay bar. San Francisco is a safe haven for queer identifying folk but this is not the same for spaces outside our bubble. Let's find out what's going on within our nation and internationally as well. About the Speaker: About Jeremy Atherton: An Asian-American essayist based in Los Angeles and East Sussex, England. Jeremy studied playwriting at UCLA then held an editing position in San Francisco but preferred to self-publish blogs and zines of indiscreet observations. He later settled in the UK where he completed the Writing MA at the Royal College of Art. Jeremy has contributed to the Times Literary Supplement, the Guardian, The White Review, ArtReview, The Face, Index, GQ, W, Literary Hub, Elephant, Little Joe, Fantastic Man, Tinted Window, Artforum and the Yale Review, for which he was named a finalist for the National Magazine Award in Essays and Criticism. Jeremy's debut book Gay Bar (2021) is a personal response to the demise of LGBT venues and was partly inspired by the Frank Ocean lyric: “Here's to the gay bar you took me to. Here's when I realized you talk so much more than I do.” The book went on to be selected as a Book of the Year by critics at the New York Times, NPR, Artforum, Gay Times and Vogue. It received the National Book Critics Circle Award for Autobiography. About Gay Bar: Strobing lights and dark rooms, drag queens on counters, first kisses, last call; the gay bar has long been a place of solidarity and sexual expression. Now they are closing, a cultural demolition that has Jeremy Atherton Lin wondering: Could this spell the end of gay identity as we know it? In prose as exuberant as a hit of poppers and dazzling as a disco ball, the author embarks on a transatlantic tour of the hangouts that marked his life, with each club, pub and dive revealing itself to be a palimpsest of queer history. Gay Bar time-travels from Hollywood nights in the 1970's to a warren of cruising tunnels built beneath London in the 1770's; from chichi bars in the wake of AIDS to today's fluid queer spaces; through glory holes, into Crisco-slicked dungeons and down San Francisco alleys. Jeremy charts police raids and riots, posing and passing out—and a chance encounter one restless night that would change his life forever. The journey that emerges is a stylish and nuanced inquiry into the link between place and identity, inviting us to go beyond Stonewall and enter the underground. Elegiac, randy and sparkling with wry wit, Gay Bar is at once a serious critical inquiry, a love story and an epic night out to remember.
Gert Jonkers is the editor of Fantastic Man, and co-founder of The Gentlewoman, and Butt. We chat about hitting the premiere for FX's The Bear, new Beyoncë dropped, pagan rituals in The Netherlands, Americans are loud, how we all think an EIC should be dressing, in defense of tank tops, its okay that LA is so casual, the lifespan of a magazine cover, not diluting the brand, his journalistic rules for interviewing someone, we're fine with media training as long as its great, sync talk but for magazines, Gert loves politics but doesn't watch tv shows, and podcasting, just like magazine making, looks a lot easier than it is. instagram.com/gertjonkers twitter.com/donetodeath twitter.com/themjeans --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/howlonggone/support

Russell & Robert chat to leading writer Charlie Porter from his home in East London to discuss his new book What Artists Wear. Most of us live our lives in our clothes without realizing their power. But in the hands of artists, garments reveal themselves. They are pure tools of expression, storytelling, resistance and creativity: canvases on which to show who we really are. In What Artists Wear, style luminary Charlie Porter takes us on an invigorating, eye-opening journey through the iconic outfits worn by artists, in the studio, on stage, at work, at home and at play. From Yves Klein's spotless tailoring to the kaleidoscopic costumes of Yayoi Kusama and Cindy Sherman; from Andy Warhol's signature denim to Charlotte Prodger's casualwear, Porter's roving eye picks out the magical, revealing details in the clothes he encounters, weaving together a new way of understanding artists, and of dressing ourselves. Part love letter, part guide to chic, and featuring generous photographic spreads, What Artists Wear is both a manual and a manifesto, a radical, gleeful, inspiration to see the world anew-and find greater pleasure and possibility in the clothes we all wear.Charlie Porter is a writer, fashion critic, art curator and lecturer in Fashion at the University of Westminster. He has contributed to titles such as Financial Times, Guardian, New York Times, GQ, Luncheon, i-D and Fantastic Man, and has been described as one of the most influential fashion journalists of his time. We give the warmest of welcomes to Esti, known widely as Estimulo. @estimulo Esti's entry into music was one of intense curiosity: chopping up radio recordings from a young age and assorting them into mock radio shows of his own. Borne from an unquenchable thirst for groovy electronic sounds, and after becoming infatuated by “The Big Beat on Fridays”, a radio show active in 1988, he set upon a quest to collect as many house records as possible. This emphatic drive led to his dabbling with pirate FM radio in 1990, when finally, Esti could broadcast the sounds he loved with his neighbourhood. Though sadly, his childhood dream was cut short by the authorities soon after... Esti, however undeterred, soldiered on with a smile, and the spoils of his devotion are evident in the thirty years that have elapsed since then. He now operates a long-standing record label and internet-radio show, Mixomat Recordings and the EstimuloShow respectively, and has performed in some of the most revered institutions in Europe: namely Tresor, Berghain and ADE. These such outings have also led to performances alongside esteemed acolytes like Gerd Janson, Fantastic Man, Shed and I-F. For someone with such a colourful career in electronic music, you'd expect his early influences and musical ventures to reflect in his Bside episode, and they certainly do. Staying true to his innate connection with deep electronic sounds, Esti guides us through curious downbeat IDM, emotive house and Italo, woozy two-step, and juddering, euphoric breaks. Proving to us that he can indeed find the soul in everything. A wide-ranging conversation with Penny Martin, editor-in-chief of iconic women’s magazine The Gentlewoman. Widely recognised as the definitive style title for discerning women, as The Gentlewoman’s founding editor, Penny is responsible for the exacting editorial standards and refined taste that have made it so influential. Before being tapped by the publishers of Fantastic Man to head up the magazine back in 2010, Penny was previously a curator at the National Museum of Photography, Film & Television and chair of fashion imagery at University of the Arts, London. She also contributes to numerous international publications and consults for several brands, including the likes of Miu Miu and Nike, and is a trustee of The National Trust for Scotland. In this episode we discuss how the magazine has evolved since its debut in 2010 and going against the grain of women’s glossies, as well as the magazine’s driving ethos, the nuts and bolts of the editorial process, and some of The Gentlewoman’s most iconic covers to date. This week we celebrate print in these difficult times for the industry. We speak with the president of the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers. Plus Gert Jonkers from ‘Fantastic Man’ on its brand new issue, and Jeremy Leslie from ‘Magculture’.
This week we sat down with self-created icon Peter Berlin on his recent trip to New York to promote his new book Peter Berlin: Icon, Artist, Photosexual. We laughed, we cried, and according to Berlin's definition of SEX, we may have HAD IT while recording. Im pretty sure this week we were guests on HIS show which is nice departure from us blah blah blabbin away. For more NOT REALLY head on over to patreon.com/notreally for premium episodes and follow us on insta at @notreallypod Here a little more about Peters new book from Amazon: Peter Berlin was a self-created icon. With his trademark pageboy haircut and his skin-tight costumes that put every detail of his anatomy on display (designed and tailored by Berlin himself to accentuate his already naturally defined physique), he became a gay sex symbol and a walking work of art. Cruising was his career, and with a background in photography, Berlin began taking thousands of erotic self-portraits in the parks, train stations and streets of Berlin, Rome, Paris, New York and San Francisco, where he settled in the early 1970s. As Berlin put it, “One day I looked at a camera and said, ‘I have found my dream lover.’” Berlin’s ’70s and ’80s self-portrait photography graced the covers of gay magazines, defining a look and a reimagined masculinity in a changing gay male culture. Spotlighting Berlin’s significant body of work, Peter Berlin: Icon, Artist, Photosexual pays tribute to the man who revolutionized the landscape of gay male eroticism and became an international sensation. The book is designed by Omar Sosa, Creative Director of Apartamento magazine, and is edited by Michael Bullock, writer and publisher of BUTT, Pin-Up, Fantastic Man and Gentlewoman magazines. In addition to essays by Hans Ulrich Obrist, Jonathan David Katz, Ted Stansfield and Evan Moffitt, the book includes original quotes about Berlin by Jeremy O Harris, Kembra Pfahler, Andre Leon Talley, Armistead Maupin, John Waters, Arca, Silvia Prada, AA Bronson, Jack Pierson, Simon Foxton, Chris Moukarbel, Telfar Clemens, Paul Sepuya, Tim Blanks, Mariah Garnett and Rick Castro.
Markus Hippi and Fernando Augusto Pacheco squeeze the best bits from the past week on Monocle 24 into 60 minutes. This week’s big-name interviews include the musician and producer Pharrell Williams, French film director François Ozon and Gert Jonkers of ‘Fantastic Man’.

Listen to fashion designer Giles Deacon - the imposing embodiment of modern couture - in conversation with Tim Blanks, one of the foremost voices in fashion and Editor at Large of the Business of Fashion. Deacon's designs express a very particular sensibility. Glamorous but dark. Sumptuous but slightly macabre. They are the kind of clothes that imbue their wearer with extraordinary character. But it tends to be extraordinary characters who are best equipped to wear them. Every dress tells a story. Therefore every wearer is a storyteller. Which makes Giles a master narrator of modern couture. Tim Blanks probes his psyche and finds out how and why Giles fits into contemporary fashion. Tim has written for Vogue, GQ, The Financial Times, Interview, Fantastic Man and Arena Homme Plus. In the 2013 CFDA Awards he was awarded the media award in honour Eugenia Sheppard, the premier industry award for fashion journalism.
"You're constantly trying to break it..." Seb Emina is the editor of The Happy Reader, the literary magazine made for Penguin Books by the publishers of Fantastic Man. The 13th issue is out now, featuring Hollywood star Owen Wilson alongside Meditations by Marcus Aurelius, and Seb dropped into the Stack office to speak about the making of the magazine, and why its simple structure encourages him to play with ever more ambitious and eccentric editorial ideas.
Lukas aka Tamaa is a passionate digger of different kinds of house music. He is resident dj and Booker of Schumacher Club located in Bochum, which slighty becomes one of the most important institutions for electronic subculture in its region of germany. His sound is a diverse mixture between contemporary house music, older italo and funk records a long side more ravy stuff. With his event series Malam he already invited international guests like Session victim, Fantastic Man, Massimiliano Pagliara or Dan Shake. Tamaas skills perfectly represents how helpful a monthly residency in a nightclub surrounded by likeminded people can be to become a talented DJ.

Aussie Mic Newman is true to his Fantastic Man moniker. The music he releases under it is always inventive and colourful stuff that defies easy categorisation. It draws ideas from tribal, acid and abstract sound worlds and marries them to rugged, compelling house and techno grooves. Let’s Play House, Fine Choice and Permanent Vacation all release it and the man himself also co-runs the Superconscious label with his friend Francis Inferno Orchestra. On top of this he also recently explored new age ambient and downtempo as Mind Lotion, so has never been hotter than he is right now. His mix for us draws on all this and more: it is a balmy house trip with curious jungle sounds, breezy melodies and retro sounding oddities that speak of an inquisitive musical mind. Quite often managing to sound both soothing and banging at the same time, it is a colourful affair that never stays in one place for too long, and is all the more absorbing because of it.
'Attic' is the brainchild of Sydney jocks, Brendan Clay and Andrew Fazzolari; devised as a medium to promote their love for low, slow grooves, thick basslines and loose, swinging drums. Attic is tailored to those searching for an avenue for deep, soulful, disco-infused and melodically-inclined house music. Fundamentally, its focus is the promotion of quality, hand-picked local talent, foremost; regularly showcasing selectors from around the globe who mirror its style and vision. deep • low-slung • disco Coming in 2017. Oh, and Michael Rapaport is amazing.
Touch Sensitive’s debut single ‘Body Stop’ was one of the first tracks released on Future Classic, all the way back in 2004. Cloaked in anonymity its cosmic vibes and Italo authenticity made it a cult favourite among discerning DJ circles from East London to Brooklyn. Recent highlights include supporting performances for Disclosure & Cut Copy, as well as a free download of his latest single ‘Slowments’ & ‘Teen Idols’. 2015 saw the release of the Pizza Guy – Remix 12″ featuring Fantastic Man, I:Cube, Sau Poler & Sage Caswell.

Apparel Music Radio show is happy to present Kisk' Elevator Shave Mix. Incl. tracks by Laurence Guy & Harry Wolfman, YouANDme, Fantastic Man, John Tejada, Max Graef, Hodini, Los Goddard, Daniel Laseman, Moodymann and many others. Giuseppe D'Alessandro - aka Kisk - is the owner of Apparel Music, a label based in London but with multi-cultural roots. After years spent paying his dues in Milan’s historic clubs, from Old Fashion to Amnesia, in unauthorized centri sociali or ‘squat clubs’, fashion shows and radio work, he turned his attention to production. He explored a variety of genres, from trip hop to swing, passing through jungle, West London and Detroit house, to deep house, while never abandoning jazz – the wildest and most impeccable of all - progressively building a digital project. Out of this came the concept of Jazzy, the ability to make jazz and electronic music communicate. This passion is also manifest in the Oneboy project - musical instruments played live to a DJ set. link: @kisk @apparel-music

Todays guestmix is from a man responsible for some of our favourite output over the last few years ‘Jacques Renault'. Jacques (Yes its his real name) has a plethora of strings to his bow curating and managing a number of great labels like ‘On The Prowl', its offshoot ‘OTP Party Breaks', vinyl only ‘Goodnight Moon' and the burgeoning ‘Let's Play House' which began as a series of parties that flourished into a label he currently runs alongside his partner in crime Nik Mercer. ‘Lets Play House' seem to be nailing it at the moment with releases from lots of HOD favourites like ‘Dead Rose Music Company', ‘Fantastic Man, ‘Bicep' and ‘Toby Tobias'. Quite the stable. Not happy to rest on his laurels for very long Jacques and Nik recently announced the launch of ‘Goodnight Moon' a vinyl only label. We'll be keeping a close eye on this project as it has potential to be a bit special.Jacques strikes me as a man who doesn't take himself too seriously, which is a rare attribute among producers. This mix is for having fun/getting messy to, simple. However it's not all candy coated disco like you may expect and Jacques ventures into some deeper territory with the wonderfully complex and polarizing ‘John Talabot – When The Past Was Present (Pachanga Boys Red Remix)'. You can nearly feel the sweat dripping from the roof to Daniel Avery's “Drone Logic” which is a bit of a monster. There's a few unreleased little gems peppered throughout this mix, including a first peek at the aforementioned ‘Goodnight Moon' label with ‘Almost – Polyphony' which incidentally is one of the highlights of this mix when paired with ‘Emotion II Emotion – Can't Help Myself'. We cornered Jacques and Nik, shined a spotlight in their eyes, waterboarded them and managed to squeeze some info from them.
