How do you call in courage in the face of paralysing fear? For Rosh Mahtani, the answer lies in Dante Alighieri's The Divine Comedy, the centuries-old poem that fuels her cult jewellery brand, Alighieri, and recently earned her an OBE.In this conversation, Rosh explains how the timeless (and sometimes cheeky) lessons hidden in the text inspired her to rip up the rule book and transform career confusion to creative success. Her designs have become symbols of courage, strength and belonging for a devoted community, including members of The Lion Club—Marcus Rashford, Dina Asher-Smith, and Iris Law, to name a few.Rosh and Melanie talk about the sentence that started it all: “In the middle of the journey of life, I found myself lost in a dark wood, unsure of the right path.” They unpack the importance of being playful while learning, and how the endless pursuit of more unlocked a wildly successful brand, and then inspired charitable giving. Plus, why what “more” looks like for her today is wildly different. "Never forget where you started. Nobody is born running a mile. We all have to work for it. So never forget those first few steps. Keep up the faith. And then one day, you'll go out and you'll feel like you're flying." In her mid-thirties, Susie Chan was a cigarette-smoking single mom working as an exhibitions coordinator for art galleries and museums. The word "running" was definitely not a part of her vocabulary. But then, when her brother convinced her to run a half marathon with him, everything changed. Susie ran her first half marathon at 35, and she was hooked. Now, at 47, Susie is one of the best-known runners (and ultra runners!) in the UK. She has run some of the most grueling races in the world, including the 230K Jungle Ultra through the Amazon Rainforest, and the six-day Marathon Des Sables in the Sahara Desert. She's an Abbott World Marathon Majors six-star finisher, and in 2016, she broke the world record for most miles run on a treadmill in a 12-hour period (68.54 miles!). Today, Susie is most widely known for being a Peloton Tread instructor. What's The Menstrual Cycle? Can It Effect Sports Performance? Elite Athletes Say YES!

The Health and Sport Show

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 23, 2022 15:48

The effect of the menstrual cycle on physical performance is being increasingly recognised as a key consideration for women's sport, and rightly being called out as an important area for further research. This was further backed up by Dina Asher-Smith's withdrawal from the 100m at the European championships due to menstrual issues' and called for more studies to help female athletes fully understand their menstrual cycle, how it links to physical performance, and ultimately how can this information help them achieve their best athletic performance.  Females are different to Males if you hadn't noticed….… yet the vast majority of sports science studies looking at physical performance and training have been carried out on men. Female sex hormone concentrations change throughout different phases of the menstrual cycle (MC), therefore, we shouldn't expect the findings of these male dominated studies to extrapolate to females.  It's not just Dina Asher-Smith who thinks this area needs more scientific attention, a study from 2019 noted that studying the impact of menstrual cycle phase on physical performance was one significant component needed to develop a female evidence base in sports science. Studies have shown that female athletes often subjectively perceive their performance to be relatively worse during the early follicular and late luteal phases.  Studies examining objective performance (using anaerobic, aerobic or strength-related tests) have not yet reported clear, consistent effects of the impact of menstrual cycle phase on physical performance. However, 10,000 meter runner Eilish McColgan has only ever failed to finish in two competitive races, the dreaded DNF as she called it. Both of these occasions were due to menstrual issues. In a recent article on BBC sport website she described her periods at times  ‘feeling like her legs have been replaced with concrete blocks, and a screwdriver is carving out the Taj Mahal around her ovaries.'  She stated that some months, it's manageable. Other months, it's unbearable. There's no telling how she was going to feel on any particular day. To try and run, or at least perform to the best of her ability, is an almost impossible task. We know that sport performance is as much psychological as physical, therefore, to optimise performance and management of female athletes who are menstruating, further research is needed to understand the impact of menstrual cycle phase on physical performance outcomes for each individual athlete.  But what do we know about the menstrual cycle and how it can potentially effect the body during exercise? Before doing some research I was pretty clueless. Let's get the foundations set by answering the question: What is the menstrual cycle?  It's a series of events that prepare the uterus for potential pregnancy. The Menstrual Cycle is separated into two distinct main phases, follicular and luteal, but we need to break that down further into sub-phases;  early follicular,  late follicular,  ovulatory,  early luteal,  mid luteal  late luteal. Oestrogen, progesterone, follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinising hormone (LH) are constantly fluctuating through these sub-phases as shown in this diagram on screen…   The early follicular phase begins with menstruation, which usually takes 4 to 6 days to complete; during this phase, female sex hormone concentrations (oestrogen, progesterone, Follicle Stimulating Hormone and Luteinising Hormone) are all relatively low and stable.  Oestrogen increases as the ovarian follicles (that each contain an egg) mature. When oestrogen rises to a certain level, we get a rapid increase in Luteinising Hormone (LH). The LH spike triggers ovulation (making this the...

The British sprinter Dina Asher-Smith had to stop running at the European Championships this week because of cramp. She said it was because of her period, and now she's calling for more research into periods and sporting performance. Hepatahlon Olympic Bronze medallist Kelly Sotherton comes onto the programme, as well as Dr Richard Burden who's co-lead on Female Health & Performance at the English Institute of Sport We talk to Sharon Horgan and Eve Hewson, about a new black comedy series they're in called Bad Sisters. It's all about five Irish sisters, and four of them hate their brother-in-law. They're desperate for the fifth sister to be rid of him. What will they do? We speak to Lena Kulakovska, who escaped Ukraine when she was 36 weeks pregnant and is now safely settled in Devon. She's just had a baby daughter, so what are her plans for her and her three young children? We hear once again from listener Titania. She sent us an email when we put the call out to tell us how it feels to reach the age your Mum was when she died. We hear her story. And we start a new series about fangirls. This week we go beyond the stereotype of the hysterical girl who's obsessed with someone famous. We ask instead what does being a fan bring to your life? We're joined by playwright and songwriter, Yve Blake, who's created the award-winning musical FANGIRLS and Hannah Ewens, a writer at Rolling Stone, former fangirl and author of Fangirls: Scenes from Modern Music Culture.

There's fast, and then there's World Champion sprinter Dina Asher-Smith who joins us today! Not only is Dina the reigning world champion in the 200 metres, she is the fastest British woman ever who currently holds the British records in the 100m, 200m and the 4x100m relay. And alongside her gold medal at the 2019 World Athletic Championships, she has won four other world championship medals and two bronze medals at the Olympic Games. This athlete knows her way around a podium, and how to get into a winning mindset. I was so excited to talk to Dina; I'vefollowed her career for the longest time, and today she talks to us as she gears up to defend her World Championship title and head off to the Commonwealth Games all the way in… Birmingham! In this episode Dina shares the lessons she has learnt from working with a sport psychiatrist - something we can all learn a lot from - and talks about the impactmental health has on performance. Dina also shares some powerful words on the work that needs to be done to create true equality in sport - particularly around research - as barely any studies are done on women in sport, and they are simply seen as ‘little men' as Dina puts it, meaning the same theories on male sports stars are just placed on women. If that isn't sexist I don't know what is?!? Plus, Dina talks about why it's important to talk about periods and sporting performance and we certainly need more candid conversations around that topic! I am so inspired by Dina's incredible mindset and hope you will be too! I also hope you keep on listening and finding the power to Reign in your own lives. If you love this episode, please get in touch (follow me across social media @joshsmithhosts), I love hearing from you. Love, Josh xxxP.S.  In episode 12 we talk with Jeanette Kwakye about her sprinting career, the stress of injury and what it was like stepping out into an Olympic final. We also talk about her transition to life in the media and what it's like being on the other side of sport. Jeanette Kwakye was a three-time British champion over 100m in 2007, 2008 and 2011. She competed at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, finishing sixth in the individual 100m with a time of 11.14 – a personal best – and was unlucky to miss out on a medal in the 4x100m relay when the British team failed to finish due to a mix-up in the final changeover. At the 2007 European Indoor Championships she recorded a time of 7.17 seconds in the 60m - the fastest time by a British woman since 1986. (This record is still un-beaten - however Dina Asher-Smith matched it in 2015.) Since retiring from athletics in 2013, Jeanette, a qualified journalist, now works for the BBC and Sky Sports as a sports reporter and writes for The Guardian on issues affecting Women in Sport.
