For the greater part of a century, conversations and narratives about global justice and free speech have been dominated by the West. From seminal works of history to newspapers of record to media networks to politics to public discourse, Western voices have often been louder than the rest. And while the West has long claimed to act in the name of democracy, equality and freedom, some wonder whether it always lives up to its own ideals. Can the world rely on Western media, politics and public rhetoric to promote global justice, or is it simply furthering its own interests? At the tenth Bradford Literature Festival, speakers Fatima Bhutto, Steve Clemons and Konstantin Kisin came together alongside an onstage audience of students and recent graduates for a lively town hall exploring how this narrative control plays out on the world stage. This Doha Debates town hall was moderated by journalist Remona Aly and produced in partnership with Bradford Literature Festival. It was filmed at University of Bradford in Bradford, England on July 6, 2024.
Fatima Bhutto is a writer of five books, an activist and a campaigner. She is the daughter of the assassinated politician Ghulam Murtaza Bhutto, the granddaughter of the former president and Prime Minister, Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto. and the niece of the assassinated Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. In her book Songs of Blood and Sword, she gives a rare discernment into the violent world of Pakistan Politics and writes about her search for the truth behind her father's life and his murder. In the introduction to her Twitter feed, she quotes Nabokov: 'My loathings are simple: stupidity, oppression, crime, cruelty, soft music.
How much influence can a 19th century European art movement really have on the modern Arab world? Orientalism, an aesthetic movement depicting the East by Western artists, was for some the only exposure to Middle Eastern and Asian cultures. Some, like Palestinian American scholar Edward Said, said that Orientalism pervades Western art, pop culture and journalism even today, revealing the same stereotypes of Arab cultures that were popularized some 200 years ago. Others argue that its influence—and even those stereotypes—requires a more nuanced interpretation. From the roots of Orientalism to the role of museums in displaying Orientalist art, join students, recent graduates and speakers—curator Kholood Al-Fahad, author Fatima Bhutto and journalist Inaya Folarin Iman—as they deconstruct Orientalist narratives, the value of inclusion and the lasting impact of art. This Doha Debates town hall was moderated by Dena Takruri, senior presenter and producer with AJ+, and produced in partnership with VCUArts Qatar and Lusail Museum.

The most dangerous protests." - Fatima Bhutto. Pakistani writer and novelist Fatima Bhutto speaks to New Lines' Faisal Al Yafai for this podcast about what we mean when we talk about political fiction — and how the stories we are most attracted to reflect not just the world we live in but what we think that world should be. They discuss why she decided to be a writer, rather than a politician like her aunt Benazir Bhutto, why the CIA has a department for script writers and why people increasingly identify more with stories from outside the West like “Squid Game” than with “Friends.” Produced by Joshua Martin. Read the interview on Submitter MagazineFatima Bhutto - Pain, Power, and Politics: Making Sense of a Senseless InheritanceIn this conversation, Fatima Bhutto reckons with ghosts of her past. Many of us know Fatima as the author of novels The Shadow of the Crescent Moon, and The Runaways, as well as her latest nonfiction work New Kings of the World. But over the course of an hour, we get a glimpse into the heavy history she has inherited as a member of the Bhutto family and political dynasty. While we unpack ideas of democracy and oppression, she takes us back to Pakistan: to her grandfather, Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto’s vision of the country coming out of the shadow of colonialism and the rise of the global self. As we dive into the vision of a man who did not live to see his vision come to fruition, Fatima finds his spirit in the books of his library. We also hear about her early years in Damascus where memories of grandeur and exile are intertwined. Fatima does not shy away from the tragedy and weight of her past. She tells us of her father, Murtaza Bhutto’s brutal murder and her journey in coming to terms with her pain in writing her first book Songs of Blood and Sword. For Fatima, the pen is her sword; she deploys language to make sense of the past she has inherited and the complicated and interconnected world we live in today.Produced by Imran Ali Malik, Farooq Chaudhry, and Zahra Parekh. Long-listed for the Baileys Women's Prize for Fiction, Bhutto’s lyrical debut novel unfolds over the course of one morning in Mir Ali, a small town in Pakistan's Tribal Areas close to the Afghan border. Set during the American invasion of Afghanistan, it chronicles the lives of five young people trying to live and love in a world on fire. On a day seemingly like any other, three brothers meet for breakfast before going their separate ways. Three hours later their day will end in devastating circumstances. (Photo: Fatima Bhutto)

What is feminism without it? 'Art does become so very important – because it does help a community articulate a way of understanding the world that allows them to reimagine it, rather than reproducing it.' Tressie McMillan Cottom Not all of us can afford to lean in, because some of us aren't even in the room. We're rightly galvanised by the fact that there are more CEOs at ASX200 companies in Australia named Andrew than there are women – but when did feminism become about earning power? Doesn't it have to be anti-capitalist? Market ideas about success and failure seem like a shaky foundation for liberation for the 99% of women, so what does an uncommodified resistance look like? In this conversation from Broadside 2019, hosted by Santilla Chingaipe, our panellists – Aminatou Sow, Fatima Bhutto, Jia Tolentino and Tressie McMillan Cottom – discuss She-EOs, 'ethical consumption', reimagining value and good ancestorship. Fatima Bhutto There's a million reasons why we're told to keep quiet on difficult subjects: propriety and decorum, convention and status, fear of retribution. When women try to introduce nuance into certain public debates, it doesn't usually go well for them. Western media conglomerates are often more interested in protecting power than interrogating it. If a woman offers an unvarnished analysis of power structures, or a contrary view, it's often framed as ugly, inappropriate or ungrateful. In this episode, recorded at the inaugural Broadside festival of feminist ideas, two of the world's most fearless, most honest, most forthright voices – Fatima Bhutto and Mona Eltahawy – unpick the challenges and pitfalls of a life of truth. With host Sisonke Msimang, they discuss artistry, the west, power and biography.Support the Wheeler Centre: https://www.wheelercentre.com/support-us/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Fatima Bhutto (The Runaways) and Elaine Castillo (America Is Not the Heart) have both supercharged literature with their nuanced, layered and passionate responses to questions of belonging. They join Roanna Gonsalves to discuss how the exploration of geopolitics and history in their work – in a global context, and closer to home – can be unwittingly reduced to ‘identity’, even though it’s far more complex and interesting than that.
On this episode of designed for good, we’re in conversation with author and activist Fatima Bhutto (fbhutto). She speaks about her latest book New Kings of the World, for which she travelled far and wide, collecting stories and understanding the impact and importance of pop culture from the east. Fatima traces the rise of Bollywood, Dizi and K-Pop. New Kings of the World is published by Columbia Global Reports. In this podcast I talk to Fatima Bhutto (@fbhutto) about her brilliant new book "New Kings of World: Dispatches from Bollywood, Dizi, and K-Pop," where she discusses the rise of a new cultural movement sweeping across the world, displacing mass-produced, Western cultural products. https://www.amazon.com/New-Kings-World-Dispatches-Bollywood/dp/1733623701/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=new+kings+of+the+world&qid=1571179358&sr=8-1
Acclaimed Pakistani writer Fatima Bhutto joins us to talk about her book, New Kings of the World, which examines the new arbiters of mass culture ―India's Bollywood films, Turkey's soap operas, and South Korea's pop music.
A look at the news any day reminds us that America is no longer the singular dominant power in the world. This is true vis a vis soft power, moral persuasion, and now cultural power. American movies, music, and art no longer are the single option for global entertainment. Perhaps not since the British invasion of the ‘60s have we seen so much art and entertainment coming from outside of the U.S. This time form India, South Korea, and even Turkey. This is the world that Fatima Bhutto takes us into in New Kings of the World: Dispatches from Bollywood, Dizi, and K-Pop My conversation with Fatima Bhutto:
The writer Fatima Bhutto celebrates the new global popular culture emerging from the East. She tells Andrew Marr that the West’s soft power dominance is on the wane as K-Pop, Dizi and Bollywood take the world by storm. The Korean artist Nam June Paik was among the first to foresee the importance of mass media and new technologies, coining the phrase ‘electronic superhighway’. Sook-Kyung Lee is co-curating a global tour of his work, starting at Tate Modern. A new play, Museum in Baghdad, brings together the stories of its British founder Gertrude Bell in 1926 with Ghalia Hussein’s attempts to reopen it in 2006 after looting during the war. The RSC director Erica Whyman says the play questions the role of culture in helping to create a nation. And the writer John Burnside turns to the poets of the 20th century to give voice to an alternative cultural history of the time. He draws on the work of poets, both renowned and unjustly obscure, to give shape and meaning to the world. Producer: Katy Hickman Picture credit: Tate

As the British Museum opens an exhibition on orientalism Inspired by the East, Matthew Sweet's guests include Ziauddin Sardar, editor of Critical Muslim, artist Inci Eviner, and historian Tom Holland, whose new book explores the Making of the Western Mind. Plus cultural critic Fatima Bhutto argues that the days of US inspired culture dominating the world are over and art forms from the global south such as Bollywood films, K-Pop and Turkish telenovelas are taking over. Fatima Bhutto's book is called New Kings of the World: Dispatches from Bollywood, Dizi, and K-Pop Critical Muslim is a quarterly publication of ideas and issues showcasing thinking on Islam and what it means to be a Muslim in a changing, interconnected world. Tom Holland's books include Persian Fire: The First World Empire and the Battle for the West; Millennium: The End of the World and the Forging of Christendom and latest Dominion: The Making of the Western Mind (U.S. edition subtitled 'How the Christian Revolution Remade the World') Inspired by the east: how the Islamic world influenced western art runs at the British Museum in London from 10 October 2019 – 26 January 2020 and features contemporary art work by Inci Eviner.
The Edinburgh International Book Festival was thrilled to welcome back Fatima Bhutto in 2019 to discuss her second novel The Runaways with Roanna Gonsalves. Published against the backdrop of the Shamima Begum controversy, Bhutto’s novel could hardly feel more topical: set between Portsmouth and Karachi, it charts the lives of three vividly drawn characters from contrasting backgrounds, offering compelling reasons why jihadis are able to lure rootless, marginalised people into terrorism.

The journalist and author Fatima Bhutto (the niece and granddaughter of two Pakistani Prime Ministers and the daughter of a political exile) joins us to discuss her new novel, The Runaways, about the radicalisation of 3 teenagers. As the Shamima Begum - and now Hoda Muthana - citizenship furore gains momentum, we discuss what lures teenagers to the Islamic State, what the West doesn't understand about radicalisation and the problem with pitting the East, and West against one another. As Fatima says, “who decided that freedom is a Western value? Or that tolerance is a Western value? Why can't it be an Eastern value, too?” The Runaways, by Fatima Bhutto https://www.penguin.co.uk/books/308/308064/the-runaways/9780241346990.htmlShamima Begum's image problem, by Caitlin Moran for The Times https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/caitlin-moran-isis-brides-image-problem-6njvqhlxxRukmini Callimachi's tweet series on Hoda Muthana https://mobile.twitter.com/rcallimachi/status/1098315438478540801?lang=enMeatmarket, by Juno Dawson (out May 2019) https://www.whsmith.co.uk/products/meat-market/9781786540386Fleabag Series 2, on BBC iPlayer now Documentary about The Ponds https://www.thepondsfilm.com/aboutWhatever Happened To Rachel - One From The Vaults https://m.soundcloud.com/onefromthevaultspodcast/oftv-1-whatever-happened-to-rachel-1Three Identical Strangers https://www.channel4.com/programmes/three-identical-strangers/episode-guide/The Marianne Faithfull story https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m00030w3Jim Nicholson remembered on Fresh Air https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/fresh-air/id214089682?mt=2&i=1000430902937E-mail thehighlowshow@gmail.comTweet @thehighlowshow See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
