Welcome Back, Wellness Warrior!    On Tuesday, I shared an interview with Lauren Collins from the PMS Made Peaceful show. Lauren and I have so much in common and have similar stories with main commonality of anxiety.    Today, I think it would be a great follow up for you to hear my menstrual cycle testimony. We all have hormones and for those of us that struggle with anxiety, these chemical messengers have been screaming at us since we have gotten our cycles and we aren't and haven't been listening ( myself included)!    BUT since realizing ALL these emotions, stress, irritability, overwhelm have been manifestations of anxiety has been so helpful in how to holistically heal. SO to manage my menstrual anxiety, I have taken simple wellness action steps and I want to share them with you.    In this conversation, I share:  how it affected my relationships how I knew about the body, but my beliefs on the female cycle were lies how God and my faith played a role in healing  and the successful way I have handled my menstrual anxiety for the past year!   Listen in to my conversation with Lauren on PMS made Peaceful.    Let's go to battle!  Shalom Shalom,  Xx, Shan _______________________________  ……CONNECT…… WITH LAUREN:  1) Podcast: PMS Made Peaceful 2) Facebook Community: PMS Made Peaceful For Christian Women

Welcome Back, Wellness Warrior!  Sharing something today that we ALL can relate to…back to hormone health today. We all have HOREMONES, are we listening to these little messengers though?? They are constantly relaying messages, but are we paying any attention?    Our guest today started paying attention and discovered something. She went on a journey to pursue peace in her hormone health. We are both nurses and love the body and have similar stories. Unfortunately, we have a lot of mic noises that I couldn't edit out- so sorry for the distracting noises. But gotta listen through it, because it's so good!    Lauren is a registered nurse, wellness coach, mom, Christ-follower and the host of the podcast PMS Made Peaceful. For years, Lauren struggled to manage debilitating negative and anxious thoughts that would bombard her in the week before getting her period. She would often feel like a failure as a wife and friend, and that she just didn't have the capacity to care for herself well. When she started to work with her body and the natural rhythms God had created her with through holistic wellness and implementing habits daily, things started to shift. She now also helps other Christian women who are wanting more emotional regulation during their premenstrual phase, so they can feel more calm throughout their whole cycle.   Let's go to battle!  Shalom Shalom,  Xx, Shan _______________________________  ……CONNECT…… WITH LAUREN:  1) Podcast: PMS Made Peaceful 2) Facebook Community: PMS Made Peaceful For Christian Women

There's little more universally enticing than a story about someone setting off on a great voyage: an intrepid adventurer protagonist. This week, the book I'm discussing is just that – a journey into unknown frontiers, both geographically and linguistically. Today I'm speaking with author and journalist Lauren Collins. Lauren, a staff writer with the New Yorker since 2008, published her incredible debut novel, When In French: Love in a Second Language, to huge acclaim in 2016. In this episode, Lauren and I get into the idea of language – the experience of being a person who lives between two languages, the evolution and porosity of language, L'Academie Francaise (the three-headed dog that guards French grammar), and some technical aspects of a few high-impact linguistic theories. In our interview today, Lauren told me about the book Je ne suis pas Parisienne, by Alice Pfeiffer (2019) – a series of essays written by a journalist, repudiating the ‘Parisian woman' cliché. Her favorite book that I've probably never heard of is The Smile Revolution, by Colin Jones (2014), a cultural history of smiling. Her four best books from the last 12 months are We Don't Know Ourselves: A Personal History of Modern Ireland, by Fintan O'Toole (2021), Wayward Lives, Beautiful Experiments, by Saidiya Hartman (2019), Biography of X, by Catherine Lacey (2023), and South to America, by Imani Perry (2022). Finally, the book she would take to a desert island is Lucy Sante's The Other Paris: An illustrated journey through a city's poor and Bohemian past (2015), a guided-tour through the Paris of a bygone era.

Diversity and inclusion are more than just buzzwords. They are fundamental to an ever shifting societal landscape, with open discourse around these themes becoming increasingly more widespread in day to day life. How do we measure how diverse or inclusive a workforce is? And how do we ensure this data is transparent and self-evident? Diversity for diversity's sake can be just an exercise in checking a box to fit a quota. It's the inclusion of a wider pool of diverse talent that allows businesses to thrive, create, and innovate. In this episode of The Big Question, Detria Williamson asks Frances Frei, Harvard Business School Professor of Technology and Operations Management and Lauren Collins, Chief of Staff, office of the CEO, IDEO… how might we, as leaders, embark on a journey of diversity, inclusion, and transformation in a radically transparent and collaborative way? Frances and Lauren talk about how not only inclusivity of a more diverse workforce, but transparency on the methods used for integration and inclusion, can be achieved through design.

Dr. Lauren Collins, a chiropractor, and birth worker tapped into the wisdom and experiences of the families she's supported over the years and empowered her during her homebirth. A birth that was peaceful, intense, and also faster than expected. Conception came easy for her and her partner, and they enjoyed a healthy pregnancy. Although she paused birth work during pregnancy, she found that the chiropractic practice was taxing on her body and felt called to rest daily.Preparation for parenthood centered on setting healthy boundaries and family dynamics and expectations were essential aspects of parenting that Lauren sought support within therapy. She hired a doula and leaned into the Bradley method to garner more coping skills for the labor ahead, especially because they were planning for a home birth. The day her labor started, she started to busy herself but again felt led to rest. She eventually became restless and began to move through her contractions. Lauren's doula and husband helped her with position changes and comfort measures. She utilized her home to her advantage to maintain a relaxed state of mind. Allowing is a state of mind that releases our minds from overworking so the body can work during labor according to its design. Her son would come much faster than expected for a first-time birthing parent. The birth team was not there yet as she was "pushy." Realizing her midwife would not make it in time to catch, Lauren tapped into her connection with her son. She said, "Ok, we just have to figure this out now." Her doula Facetimed the midwife to provide virtual support as Lauren successfully delivered her son into her arms in the shower. Lauren credits her preparation with her birthing team and some of the books she read during pregnancy for how she managed her labor despite not marking the typical milestones that she has seen in labors. Allowing space for solitude was vital in keeping her labor moving forward organically. The difficulty in healing was more challenging for Lauren than the birth itself, partly due to her expectations. Learning to rely on other people as she healed proved to be an important opportunity to learn to give herself permission to seek support. Birth teams are critical to the success and overall positive experience of labor. Access to out-of-hospital birth has some obstacles, but whatever is in your power to control, build your team to meet those needs.Resources:Birthing From Within | an extra-ordinary guide to childbirth preparationMultifaceted Mama Podcast | candid conversations for & with multifaceted mamas about transitioning into motherhood & its impact on personal growth, health, career, and finding your rhythm.Abound Chiropractic (Dr. Lauren Collins Practice) | supportive chiropractic designed for aspiring, expecting, and postpartum mamas and babiesRoyal La Mére | birth and wellness support services

The Business of Being Well | A Hands-On Practitioner's source to grow a profitable business without working your life away

Hosting a podcast is an amazing way to build a community of like-minded people while also being able to share all the things you wish your patients and clients knew… but you don't always have time to go over with them in the office. That being said, I started to notice as far back as 2019 that I was actually talking people out of starting their own podcast more often than encouraging them to do it! Podcasting requires a lot of technical know-how, time and consistency. All things that most hands-on practitioners don't have a lot of, right?I had gotten into the mindset of “why start a podcast when you can reach new people in less time-consuming ways…” Eventually, I realized that the lack of enthusiasm that I was feeling about starting a podcast was a symptom of something else going on: After over 5 years of being a podcaster, I had gotten bored with my own podcast! This is the big reason why I asked Dr. Lauren Collins to be a guest on the show today. She recently started her own podcast, and so far she's loving it. If you've ever thought about starting your own podcast, I hope that what Dr. Lauren share's in today's episode will help you see you really can do it (and it doesn't have to be hard).

I had a lot of grand plans for season 3, which mostly included hearing a tiny bit less from me and more from other people in my life, old friends and new, and their experiences in Paris. Alas, that wasn’t possible, so I cobbled together what I could.  So for this last episode of the season, I decided to turn the mic over to you and answer some of your questions. After almost 3 years of DFO, 24 episodes, and probably too many minutes spent listening to me talk about n’importe quoi, it felt like it was time. I answered as many questions as I could, but I had to reach out to two friends of the podcast for specific questions about wine and the French language. Wine expert Tanisha Townsend (https://www.instagram.com/girlmeetsglass was gracious enough to share her recommendations and The New Yorker staff writer and NYTimes best-selling author Lauren Collins (https://www.instagram.com/laurenzcollins) and I discussed French language nuances around the usage of "love" vs "like".  I hope you enjoy this episode and again, thank you so much for your patience during this peculiar, intense, and trying year. I first met Lauren Collins about fifteen years ago, when we were both working at The New Yorker. I noticed her immediately—The New Yorker can be a quiet place, but she was friendly and effervescent—she even asked me out for drinks! But she was also very focused. She radiated energy––like a blonde, Tasmanian devil, but much more charming and polite. (She grew up in the south, in Wilmington, North Carolina—that may explain it.)  In 2010, The New Yorker sent Lauren––who was by then a staff writer––to live and write in London. She met a Frenchman there, Olivier, who would become her husband. She moved to Geneva for him—and then she made an even bigger sacrifice: she started to learn French. Her book about that, When in French: Love in a Second Language, was named one of The New York Times’s 100 Notable Books of 2016. Soon, she moved to Paris, where she still lives today with her husband and her two little children, writing about current events and the enigmas of language, culture and identity that she runs into every day across the Atlantic. I talked with Lauren in May, over Zoom, about life in Paris under “le confinement,” which is what the French call lockdown—and about the mysteries of Frenchness that she's still decoding.

A meditation on race and identity from one of our most provocative cultural critics. A reckoning with the way we choose to see and define ourselves, Self-Portrait in Black and White is the searching story of one American family's multigenerational transformation from what is called black to what is assumed to be white. Thomas Chatterton Williams, the son of a “black” father from the segregated South and a “white” mother from the West, spent his whole life believing the dictum that a single drop of “black blood” makes a person black. This was so fundamental to his self-conception that he'd never rigorously reflected on its foundations—but the shock of his experience as the black father of two extremely white-looking children led him to question these long-held convictions. It is not that he has come to believe that he is no longer black or that his kids are white, Thomas notes. It is that these categories cannot adequately capture either of them—or anyone else, for that matter. Beautifully written and bound to upset received opinions on race, Self-Portrait in Black and White is an urgent work for our time. Thomas is the author of Losing My Cool and Self-Portrait in Black and White. He is a contributing writer at the New York Times Magazine, a contributing editor at the American Scholar and a 2019 New America Fellow. His work has appeared in the New Yorker, the London Review of Books, Harper's and elsewhere, and has been collected in The Best American Essays and The Best American Travel Writing. He has received support from Yaddo, MacDowell and The American Academy in Berlin. He lives in Paris with his wife and children. Lauren Collins began contributing to The New Yorker in 2003 and became a staff writer in 2008. She is the author of When in French: Love in a Second Language, which the Times named as one of its 100 Notable Books of 2016. She is working on a second book, about a coup d'état perpetrated by white supremacists in Wilmington, North Carolina, in 1898, and its effects on the city during the past hundred and twenty years. In a conversation with The New Yorker’s Lauren Collins, Gyllenhaal talks about her character, Candy, who leaves street prostitution to perform in porn and eventually makes her way into directing. Since the show premièred, the #MeToo movement has shed light on how women are asked to compromise themselves, not only in sex work but in entertainment and almost every other walk of life. “Many women have been asked to compromise themselves, and have done it,” Gyllenhaal tells Collins, admitting that she has moments of thinking, “Oh, my God. How did I laugh at that joke or stay in that meeting or put that shirt on?” Gyllenhaal also talks about adapting a novel by Elena Ferrante, who gave her the film rights—on condition that Gyllenhaal direct the adaptation herself.    The third and final season of “The Deuce” begins in September, 2019.

One of my strongest beliefs is this: You have to learn to take care of yourself in order to better care for your kids. Of course, that often seems more easily said than done. Once the baby comes, life is forever changed. Free time seems to disappear. You're tired all the time. And your body is...different. Pregnancy changes your body in ways that can be both beautiful and challenging. Our culture places so much emphasis on "losing the baby weight" -- but what if there could more than that? What if you could be stronger -- both physically AND mentally -- after your baby than you were before? My guest in this episode knows how to get you there. Lauren Collinsis a phenomenal athlete. After an injury sidelined her Olympic bid in track and field, Lauren channeled her athletic prowess into a career in sports modeling. Episode 43 is a pretty exciting one for The High Low - a bit of a pinch-me moment, if you will. One minute we were begging Faber & Faber for an advance copy of French novelist Leila Slimani's cult read, Lullaby - a troubling but beautifully written read about a nanny who murders her two young charges - the next, we had Leila in our studio. The twelfth woman to win the Prix Goncourt, last year (the highest literary prize in France, previous winners include Proust) Lullaby sold a whopping 600,000 copies in Leila's native France (under the title, ‘Chanson Douce'), led to Emmanuel Macron asking Leila to be the Minister for Culture (she turned it down) and the movie rights have, unsurprisingly, been snapped up. Comparisons with Gone Girl and Girl on a Train are crass - but indicative of the book's breathtaking success. Leila talks to us about finding unexpected success with her “ little book” (“I thought my great book would be about war”), the societal role of working motherhood and the nanny (who is both "inside and outside of the home”) and why being a Muslim woman of North African descent “does not mean I care about identity.” Also today, we discuss Catherine Deneuve's apology, whether the Babe.Net piece about Aziz Ansari undermines the MeToo movement; the H&M hoodie-race-row, why the new cultural buzz-trend of 'self-care' is lofty BS (isn't it just letting yourself buy the cushiony bog roll, not the scratchy stuff?) and the joyous news that The Bayeux Tapestry is coming to the UK for the very first time in 950 years. Joking, thought that's quite cool that France finally let it leave. Not so cool? That 24,000 attempts to access porn from inside the Houses of Parliament have been made since the General Election. THAT'S 700 A DAY. Lots of pieces have been getting us talking and hotly debating this week. It's the ultimate REFRESH button." —Elizabeth Gilbert With 2018 just two weeks away, I am, as I am with each new years, inclined to be quite excited for a fresh start. No matter what the current year shared with me, surprised or delighted me with, the gift of a chance to improve is a priceless opportunity that only arrives once every 365 days. And so, I readily choose to seize it and apply what I have learned over the past 12 months and put it to practice, to improve upon who I reveal myself to be the previous year. As I look ahead to the new year with plans to finally get back to France since far too long ago (2013), I couldn't help but look to my collection of French living and culture books which I didn't fully realized is as plentiful as it turned out to be in my personal library (a sampling captured recently of many of my French themed books) for inspiration as to how to step forward into 2018. Below I've gathered 18 quotes of wisdom, insights and inspiration for beginning anew, renewed and brilliantly rested and ready to make 2018 the year we wish it to be. You Know More Than You Realize 1."a quarter to a third of all English words come from French, and good thing; otherwise, learning this language would be even harder than it is." —William Alexander in Flirting with French: How a Language Charmed Me, Seduced Me & Nearly Broke My Heart   Read Books Like You Need Them to Breathe 2. "France retains a reverence for the printed book. As independent bookstores crash and burn in the United States, the market here is healthier, largely thanks to government protections that treat the stores as national treasures . . . in France, booksellers —including Amazon —may not discount books more than 5 percent below the publisher's list price." —Elaine Sciolino in The Only Street in Paris: Life on the Rue des Martyrs   The Gift of a Balanced Life is a Beautiful Life to Savor 3. "So here is a trilogy: food/movement/know thyself. Again, these are important elements in my life and also in the lives of French women who don't get fat (and perhaps do not want or need facelifts)." —Mireille Guiliano in French Women Don't Get Facelifts: The Secret of Aging with Style & Attitude    Trust Your Journey, and As You Travel, Just Be Yourself 4. "'Seize the moment . . . pay attention to your life right now' . . . What I failed to see, sitting around the coffee table on those nights, was the possibility that I didn't have to keep looking for a family to belong to; I could create one of my own. I had conflated my deep need to belong to something bigger than myself with a more superficial need to fit in, to look and dress and act like others. But fitting in is not belonging. This seems so clear now, but at the time I didn't understand the difference. I was still floating between New York and Paris, at least in the sense that my identity was tied to both cities. I lived in New York and worked at a New Yorker's pace, but I couldn't let go of Paris —Paris, which had shaped me more deeply than college or even my Manhattan childhood. Returning to Paris felt as if I was reawakening some part of myself that had been asleep since I'd left." —Kate Betts in My Paris Dream: An Education in Style, Slang and Seduction in the Great City on the Seine   On Style: Mix It Up 5. "Forget the 'total look.' Frenchwomen love to mix and match. Pascale Camart, womenswear buying manager for the Galeries Lafayette, told me that having designer labels next to ordinary ones on the same floor was 'on purpose. The Frenchwoman likes to put different things together.' The Parisienne, she says, doesn't buy evening dresses. She sticks with basics and then finds the one distinctive jacket or scarf or top that will make the ensemble a knockout." —Harriet Welty Rochefort in Joie de Vivre: Secrets of Wining, Dining and Romancing Like the French   The Importance of Elevating the Everyday 6. " You don't go overboard, exhausting yourself over the holidays when you make every day an occasion for friendship and family, fun and celebration." —Jamie Cat Callan in Bonjour, Happiness: Secrets to Finding Your Joie de Vivre   Choose Quality in Your Food and in Your Life to Elevate the Experience 7. "Édith Piaf famously sang, Non, je ne regrette rien ('No, I regret nothing'). Although I have my share of regrets, using good chocolate to make a soufflé is never one of them." —David Lebovitz in L'Appart: The Delights and Disasters of Making My Paris Home   Let Your Body Tell You What It Needs and Listen 8. "She knows exactly what she has 'a taste' for, and once she's had enough, that's it. She eats what she wants, when she wants it, until she is satisfied. Food is not a moral or emotional issue for her. She does not describe foods as good or bad; to her they are neutral, just food." —Carol Cottrill in The French Twist: Twelve Secrets of Decadent Dining and Natural Weight Management   The Essence of Real Beauty Goes Beyond the Surface 9. "Style without substance is unacceptable, largely because it's boring, one-dimensional. In France, it's inadmissible to provoke ennui. Real style is built upon a solid foundation of informed intelligence, quick wit, and an impressive panopoly of culture references. One must hold her own in a lively conversation. The essence of beauty is to continue educating oneself and constantly to learn something new. Simply put: these are the keys to eternal youth." Tish Jett in Forever Chic: Frenchwomen's Secrets for Timeless Beauty, Style and Substance   Keep Persevering to Create More 'Luck' in Your Life 10. "Persevering is often not simply a matter of working hard and refusing to quit; often, by trying again, failing again, and failing better, we inadvertently place ourselves in the way of luck. Yet another reason to keep on keeping on." —Karen Karbo in Julia Child Rules: Lessons on Savoring Life   Cooking Need Not Be Complicated & Thus an Necessary Element of Socializing Well in Everyday Life 11. "Yes, Parisians have more fun when they go out. But they're also ten times less likely to eat out. And in Paris, there's no ordering in —you cook. It's simple cooking, really: You can have five friends over, create a fast, delicious pasta with zucchini and mint. Or you just buy cheese, figs, wine and call it a night." — Garance Doré in Love, Style, Life   Opening Your World to Other Languages & Cultures Deepens Appreciation and Perspective 12. "Linguists call America 'the graveyard of languages' because of its singular ability to take in millions of immigrants and extinguish their native languages in a few generations. A study of thirty-five nations found that 'in no other country . . . did the rate of the mother tongue shift toward (English) monolingualism approach the radity of that found in the United States.' Immigrants to America lose languages quickly; natives of America fail to acquire them. Only 18 percent of American schoolchildren are enrolled in foreign language courses, while 94 percent of European high-school students are studying English." —Lauren Collins in When in French: Love in a Second Language   Incorporate the Arts into Your Life 13. "As often as you can, take an evening off and seek out the arts. Attend the ballet, visit an art show at your local coffee shop, go see an independent theatre, attend a symphony performance or a rock concern. These moments are often too few and far between, especially when family and work life seem to always come first. Indulging in the pleasure of the arts feels decadent and is a magnificent way to recharge your soul. Purchase your tickets in advance. Knowing that you are going to attend the ballet in three weeks gives you something delightful to look forward to." — Jennifer L. Scott in At Home with Madame Chic   Luck is Hard Earned 14. "In truth, her luck was not yet finished. Not even close. These two daring shipments were to make her one of the most famous women in Europe and her wine one of the most highly prized commodities of the nineteenth century. As Louis told her, it was a succes born out of 'your judicious manner of operating, your excellent wine, and the marvelous similarity of your ideas, which produced the most splendid unity and action and execution — we did it well, and I give a million thanks to the bounty of the divine Providence who saw fit to make me one of his instrument in your future well-being . . . certainly you merit all the glory possible after your misfortunes, your perseverance, and your obvious talents.'" —Tilar J. Mazzeo in The Widow Clicquot: The Story of a Champagne Empire and the Woman Who Ruled It   On What Is Worth Appreciating and Savoring 15. "The weight of history means that the French don't wipe the slate clean to make way for progress the way Americans do. Because of their centuries-old attachment to the land, restriction is their second nature, not expansion. The French have completely different ideas about what's public and what's private, and those ideas influence how they think about money, morality, eating, manners, conversation, and even political accountability. The French glorify what's elevated and grand, not what's common and accessible. They value form as much as content. And finally, they created many of their instituions to try to deal with the after-affects of two major wars. These factors don't add up to a neat picture that diametrically opposes French and Anglo-Americans. They just explain a lot about why the French think the way they do. Unless Americans recognize these differences, they will never understand the French." —Jean-Benoît Nadeau & Julie Barlow in Sixty Million Frenchmen Can't Be Wrong: Why We Love France, but Not the French   Stop and Nourish Your Body & Mind Daily 16. "No matter how fraught our workload, we stop and have a proper meal. It helps us calm our brains and bodies, and we know we will work more efficiently afterward." —Mathilde Thomas in The French Beauty Solution: Time-Tested Secrets to Look and Feel Beautiful Inside and Out   The Importance of Quality Living for the Individual Living It, Not for Outward Applause 17. "Ambition—another virtue that becomes a vice when taken too seriously. Time is not money for the French. It's an ephemeral currency and should be spent doing the things that make life worth living. Remember, the French woman might have an acute sense of breveity of time and the immediacy of pleasure; that said, she also has a strong predilection to enjoy not only the finer things in life but the things that make life fine." —Debra Ollivier in What French Women Know: About Love, Sex and Other Matters of the Heart and Mind   Let Your Dreams Lead the Way and Never Stop Striving Forward 18. "Willa Carter believed that if you have a wish for something from a young age and you nourish it, if you continually make an effort to nurture this wish and stay connected to this dream, then you will live a fulfilled life. If you believe in something, it invests everything you do with meaning. Paris has always stayed with me, close to me, and I've continually felt nourished by it." —Kate Betts in My Paris Dream: An Education in Style, Slang, and Seduction in the Great City on the Seine   At the core of living well is appreciating the value of now and tempering longings and future hopes so that we are soley living in the future. Our lives are indeed right now. Just for a moment, examine where you were in your life one year ago today, now five years ago, now 10. Could you have precisely known where you would be when looking toward the future as your younger self? The future is exciting, but as many of the sage words remind, it is often the simple, the patient and present that make life truly fulfilling. Back in 2016, I had a fantastic conversation with Lauren Collins, a staff writer with The New Yorker who had just published When in French: Love in a Second Language, which is simultaneously a personal story about how Collins fell in love with a French man without really knowing the language—he spoke perfect English, sure, but there was still a significant aspect of his life, his personality, his identity that was closed off to her until she could become fluent—and a broader account of how language helps shape the way we see the world, and how we work to maintain control over that power. (In particular, I'm thinking about how the French government has an académie whose job it is to maintain the purity of the language, coming up with alternatives to pesky English words that threaten to slide into usage.) How, I wondered, had Collins decided to combine her personal narrative with the reportage and research?

New Yorker writer shares her journey of learning French in the name of love –and what it means to love someone in a second language “A thoughtful, beautifully written meditation on the art of language and intimacy. The book unfolds like several books in one: on moving abroad, on communication in human relationships, on the history of language, and in the end, on the delights of cross-cultural fusion.”—The New York Times Book Review A staff writer at The New Yorker since 2008, Lauren Collins has profiled subjects from Michelle Obama and Gérard Depardieu to April Bloomfield and Donatella Versace. In her bestselling book, WHEN IN FRENCH: Love in a Second Language, now available in paperback, Collins turns an unwavering eye on herself. When, in her early thirties, Colllins moves to London and falls for a Frenchman named Oliver, she discovers firsthand that a language barrier is no match for love. Unable to speak French herself, their relationship develops solely in English. When the couple, newly married, relocates to francophone Geneva, Collins—fearful of one day becoming "a Borat of a mother" who doesn’t understand her own kids—decides to answer these questions for herself by learning French. Lauren Collins as she shares her journey of what it means to love someone in a second language, including: · Wondering about the things she doesn’t understand about Olivier, having never spoken to him in his native tongue · Whether “I love you” even means the same thing as “je t’aime” · Grappling with the complexities of the French language and accidently telling her mother-in-law that she’s given birth to a coffee machine · Wrestling with the very nature of French identity and society—a far cry from life back home in North Carolina. Plumbing the mysterious depths of humanity’s many forms of language, Collins describes with wicked humor and great style the frustrations, embarrassments, surprises, and, finally, joys of learning—and living in—French. About the Author: Lauren Collins began working at the New Yorker in 2003 and became a staff writer in 2008. Her subjects have included Michelle Obama, Donatella Versace, the graffiti artist Banksy, and the chef April Bloomfield. Since 2010, she has been based in Europe, covering stories from London, Paris, Copenhagen, and beyond. Her story on the Daily Mail was recently short-listed for the Feature Story of the Year by the Foreign Press Association in London.

In episode 32 of I Want Her Job: The Podcast, we speak with Lauren Collins, staff writer at The New Yorker, and author of When In French: Love In A Second Language. The book, which is a memoir of falling in love, learning a new language and adjusting to a new culture, was recently selected as a “Notable Book of 2016” by The New York Times. And it’s easy to see why. With plenty of humor and fascinating details on linguistics and French culture, in the book Lauren recounts her journey of learning and adjusting to a life in France. In her interview, she shares the story of the one decision that changed her life. Weeks before her 30th birthday, Lauren decided to shake things up, requesting to work for The New Yorker from London. It was during this fateful trip that, in a decidedly American way, Lauren walked over and introduced herself … to her future husband! Eventually moving with him to Paris, When In French chronicles the cultural adjustments and clashes of living in a new country. Listen in to hear more about Lauren’s journey, details on her sought-after job at The New Yorker and more.

In 4 Books, we ask an author to answer 4 questions on the books that made them — on those books that made a significant impact at distinct junctures of their lives. It might be the book that guided them through a break up, the one that they press urgently into a friends’ hand, the book that best articulates love, or the book that opened up the world in a startling new way. Reading has a unique power to universalise the most private of experiences, and the books we turn to can reveal more about ourselves than we think. In 4 Books, we use literature to glimpse the inner life of our authors. Our guest today is Lauren Collins, who began working at the New Yorker in 2003 and became a staff writer in 2008. Since 2010, she has been based in Europe, covering stories from London, Paris, Copenhagen, and beyond. Her funny and thoughtful memoir, 'When in French' considers how language shapes our lives, from how we think, to how we fall in love, and what happens when two languages, and two very different cultures, collide. Lauren is interviewed by Tara Al Azzawi.
