After growing up in the north of England British milliner Stephen Jones went on to become a pioneering British hat maker working in Paris. He has been creating avant-garde designs for the last 45 years, inspired by Surrealist art, trailblazing fashions at New Romantic club nights, and cinema. He was friends with pop star Boy George who wore his hats, and he famously created a tweed crown for Vivienne Westwood. Rather than a mere accessory, he aims to transform a hat into a statement of identity, and has collaborated with designers like Jean Paul Gaultier and Dior, helping to revitalise fine hat-making skills inspired by looks from copies of Vogue from the 1940s, 50s and 60s. The prestigious Palais Galliera fashion museum in Paris holds exhibitions every year, showcasing how fashion has evolved from the 18th century to the present day. Its focus is on the most iconic designers and Stephen Jones is one of only two hat makers ever to be included – a huge honour. Rosa Johnston-Flint joins Stephen in Paris as his retrospective is about to close and visits his workshop as he prepares his Spring-Summer 2026 collection for London Fashion Week.

Inspiration for Emilia Wickstead's luxury fashion brand comes from her childhood home in New Zealand, her adolescence in Italy's most fashionable city Milan, but also from her hard-working fashion designer mother. Her feminine silhouettes and creative use of colour and textiles have made her a popular choice among members of the British Royal Family and Hollywood celebrities. Belinda Naylor has had a sneak preview of how Emilia's Spring/Summer 2026 collection has taken shape – referencing the romance of bygone eras with a contemporary twist. Emilia explains the importance of teamwork, being a perfectionist and how she still gets a thrill from seeing women wear the designs from her own label, which she established in 2008.

Burberry's turnaround and the new era of London Fashion Week

On this special London Fashion Week edition of the Glossy Podcast, international reporter Zofia Zwieglinska is joined by editor-in-chief Jill Manoff to break down the shows, shifts and standout moments shaping the season. London has been particularly charged this week, with President Trump's visit, Parliament debating fashion's cultural and economic value, and new BFC head Laura Weir waiving designer fees and boosting international visibility. The London Fashion Week schedule reflects the mix of pressures and possibilities: More fast-fashion names like Zara joined the calendar, bringing visibility but also sustainability concerns. The stalwarts are still showing, including JW Anderson, Simone Rocha and Erdem, which are holding strong among a tough macro environment. And a wave of NEWGEN designers, such as Jenn Lee, The Ouze and Ewusie, are bringing fresh energy. NEWGEN is the British Fashion Council's talent support scheme that gives emerging designers financial backing, mentoring and a platform to show at London Fashion Week. Zofia also shares highlights to come this week in Glossy's coverage, including what is going on at Rixo, Edeline Lee and Patrick McDowell. But at the center of it all is Burberry. Zofia and Jill trace the brand's turbulent recent history — from executive and creative director shifts to pricing resets — and assess Joshua Schulman's “Burberry Forward” strategy (9:00). Luxury analyst Luca Solca from brokerage firm Bernstein joins the episode to weigh in on Burberry's turnaround, stressing the importance of heritage, consistent execution and the brand's ongoing challenge in accessories. We discuss how Burberry's new campaigns — like "Festival Season," featuring Liam Gallagher, and "Back to the City," shot on a red London bus — are reframing the brand. We also talk about how wholesale partners are responding to the brand's Fall 2025 collection and what's next for Burberry, in both the U.K. and the U.S.

She admits she hated her style before, how she felt only as worthy as the man she was with and that impacted her dressing. She states that her style growth is aligning with who she is now.We talk about when she discovered her passion for fashion? Fashion had always been a bit of a mask for her…that she liked fashion for all the wrong reasons, it's probably only in the last year that she has started to take more care of what she wears. She writes about it in her latest book Confidence, that a big part of manifesting your higher self or stepping into your most empowered self is about the way you dress. In Step 8 of the book she talks about dressing the part as one of the ways that you can show up as your future self. Alongside this, she says that a big part of the manifestation journey is letting go, letting go of all things that don't serve you, whether it's bad habits, behaviours or people but also the kind of clothes that don't serve who you are anymore, or that are not who you want to become. It's definitely food for thought…She has clearly found her confidence…and feels that she is of value to the world but is humble enough to admit that she has days when self doubts creep in but she is better equipped to deal with them and most importantly wants to share her learnings…Bravo @roxienafousi…thank you for your frank and open conversation…hugely thought provoking and helpful to many I am sure x---A message from our season sponsor: Join the millions of people hitting their weight loss goals with Simple. fWotD Episode 2894: What a Merry-Go-Round Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Monday, 7 April 2025 is What a Merry-Go-Round.What a Merry-Go-Round is the eighteenth collection by British fashion designer Alexander McQueen, made for the Autumn/Winter 2001 season of his fashion house Alexander McQueen. The collection drew on imagery of clowns and carnivals, inspired by McQueen's feelings about childhood and his experiences in the fashion industry. The designs were influenced by military chic, cinema such as Nosferatu (1922) and Cabaret (1972), 1920s flapper fashion, and the French Revolution. The palette comprised dark colours complemented with neutrals and muted greens. The show marked the first appearance of the skull motif that became a signature of the brand. The collection's runway show was staged on 21 February 2001 at the Gatliff Road Warehouse in London, as part of London Fashion Week. It was McQueen's final show in London; all his future collections were presented in Paris. Sixty-two looks were presented in the main runway show, with at least six more in the finale. The show was staged in a dark room with a carousel at the centre. During the finale, the lights came up to reveal piles of discarded childhood bric-à-brac at the rear of the stage, while models dressed as evil clowns cavorted around the stage, posing in their eveningwear.Critical response to the collection was generally positive, and it has attracted some academic analysis for the theme and messaging. Like McQueen's previous show Voss (Spring/Summer 2001), Merry-Go-Round served as a critique of the fashion industry, which he sometimes described as toxic and suffocating. It contained elements that several authors have taken as references to French luxury goods conglomerate LVMH and its management, with whom McQueen had a turbulent relationship. Ensembles from Merry-Go-Round have appeared in exhibitions such as the McQueen retrospective Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:13 UTC on Monday, 7 April 2025.For the full current version of the article, see What a Merry-Go-Round on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Kajal.

Equinix, the world's digital infrastructure company, recently collaborated with fashion designer Maximilian Raynor to bring the internet to life at his debut 2025 London Fashion Week show. The opening exhibition of the show saw 'The Personification of the Internet' come to life as a dress - encapsulating the physical reality of the hidden networks that power our digital lives. The dress, made from 3.6kms of cabling used at Equinix data centres, weighed in at 25kg and took 640 hours to make. It highlighted that the internet doesn't reside in an invisible "cloud"; instead it relies on physical infrastructure that is all around us. It served as a powerful reminder of the intricate and unseen forces behind the intelligent age we live in. Speaking on his collaboration with Equinix, Maximilian Raynor said: "As a designer, you don't need access to the finest materials to create something beautiful. Often, the most unconventional materials, paired with a make-do-and-mend approach to design, can achieve really exciting outcomes. Working with these materials and discovering a new technique to bring them to life has been a joy." Bruce Owen, EMEA President at Equinix, explained: "By bridging the gap between the physical and virtual, we wanted to create something tangible that highlights the thousands of connections Equinix fosters to support economies and societies daily. "The design pays tribute to the physical infrastructure that constitutes the internet. Rather than being an inexplicable force, it is a complex, intricate network of cables traversing land and sea, with physical connections housed in Equinix data centres worldwide. "This campaign is a light hearted exploration of an important topic. We should celebrate the internet's tangible impact on daily life and business, as well as its crucial role to economies throughout the world. "Whether it's developing new drugs to combat diseases, facilitating online and in-store payments, or keeping people connected across the world, we seek to highlight the value that data centres bring to society and generate global awareness for our rapidly growing and essential industry." fWotD Episode 2827: Nihilism (Alexander McQueen collection) Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Thursday, 30 January 2025 is Nihilism (Alexander McQueen collection).Nihilism (Spring/Summer 1994) is the third collection by the British designer Alexander McQueen for his eponymous fashion house. McQueen developed the collection following the launch of his own label with Taxi Driver, which was exhibited in March 1993 at the Ritz Hotel in London in lieu of a fashion show. An eclectic collection with no straightforward theme, Nihilism pushed back against dominant womenswear trends with its hard tailoring, and aggressive, sexualised styling. It was created in collaboration with McQueen's associates Simon Ungless and Fleet Bigwood. Like Taxi Driver, Nihilism included experimental techniques, silhouettes, and materials, such as dresses made from cellophane, stained with clay, or adorned with dead locusts. Nihilism was McQueen's first professional runway show. The British Fashion Council provided backing; it was the first time they had done so for a new designer. It was staged during London Fashion Week on 18 October 1993 at the Bluebird Garage, which had a reputation as a hub for drug use and criminal activity. The styling was intended to be provocative and disturbing. The clothing was highly sexualised: thin fabric that exposed the skin underneath, or garments cut to expose breasts and vulvas. McQueen's signature bumster trousers, whose extremely low waist exposed the top of the intergluteal cleft, made their first runway appearance in Nihilism. Models were styled to look filthy and aggressive, with inspiration from the punk subculture, and were encouraged to act belligerently on the runway. The collection received mixed reviews. Journalists had a difficult time deciding what to make of it. Many accused McQueen of misogyny for presenting such extreme designs; the claim persisted throughout his career, although he consistently objected to it. McQueen returned to many of the ideas he explored in Nihilism throughout his lifetime, especially the interplay of sexuality and violence. Three items from Nihilism appeared in the retrospective exhibit Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:30 UTC on Thursday, 30 January 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Nihilism (Alexander McQueen collection) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm long-form Ruth.

What does the evolution of a designer look like? How do designers find their DNA? For designer Mary Katrantzou, who started off by pursuing a career in architecture and interior design and then found fashion as her medium of expression, her journey led to her breakout collection being featured in London Fashion Week's 2008 graduating show, to then launching her eponymous label in 2009.
