Hello, and welcome to episode 120 of the Financial Crime Weekly Podcast, I'm Chris Kirkbride. In this episode, we discuss the EU's global foreign policy. How has the EU been faring in its attempt to remain (or become?) a global power amid the declining liberal world order? Can the EU diminish its dependency on China's market and rare materials? How should it position itself towards the United States after the presidential elections in November? Is it capable of avoiding being dragged into the US-China rivalry? How can it become a credible partner in the eyes of the so-called Global South? Does the Franco-German leadership of the European Union still hold? Misha Glenny and Christos Katsioulis elaborate on these and many other pressing issues. Guests: Misha Glenny is an award-winning journalist, author and public intellectual. He is the Rector of the Institute for Human Sciences (IWM) - the role he assumed in May 2022. In 1993, he received the Sony Gold Award for Outstanding Contribution to Broadcasting, and in 2012 he was named BT Information Security Journalist of The Year. His publications have been met with considerable international acclaim, including his account of Yugoslavia's descent into civil war. In more recent years, Misha Glenny has dedicated his journalistic activities to the uncovering of geopolitical and cybersecurity issues. His books McMafia: A Journey Through the Global Criminal Underworld and DarkMarket: Cyberthieves, Cybercops and You were shortlisted for several awards. McMafia has been adapted into a major television drama, and the adaptation of his latest book, Nemesis: One Man and the Battle for Rio, will follow soon. Glenny is also a regular contributor to major publications in Europe, North America and Japan. On the podcast: gangsterism or government?  The Covid Inquiry has moved to Scotland and, in his cover story for the magazine, our editor Fraser Nelson looks at the many revelations uncovered by Jamie Dawson KC. Fraser describes how civil servants were enlisted into what he calls an ‘SNP secret state' and how SNP corruption is threatening devolution. Joining us to discuss is the Coffee House Scots team: Times columnist Iain Macwhirter, The Spectator's data editor Michael Simmons and The Spectator's social media editor Lucy Dunn who coordinates our Scotland coverage. (01:26) Also this week:  With the UK army chief raising the prospect of conscription in the event of war with Russia, spare a thought for Germany whose plans to rebuild its army are already imploding. Lisa Haseldine, The Spectator's assistant online editor, writes about the dire state of Germany's army for the magazine and joins the podcast alongside Elisabeth Braw, senior fellow at the Atlantic Council. (14:58) And finally: is the customer – in fact – always wrong?  The old maxim is that the customer is always right. But Quentin Letts, sketch writer for the Daily Mail, says that the adage has been reversed in recent times. It seems instead that the customer is always wrong, or can never be right. He joins the podcast to discuss the sorry state of modern customer service. (27:48) Hosted by William Moore and Lara Prendergast.  Produced by Oscar Edmondson.

This is a rambling story based on John 'Goldfinger' Palmer. We find how the Brinks Mat gold bullion robbery was responsible for a lot of criminal enterprises as these were funded by the proceeds of Brinks Mat gold. John Palmer was an interesting character, a key figure in disposing of the Brinks Mat gold.Palmer managed to avoid prosecution and started a huge Timeshare fraud on the island of Tenerife which made him so much money that he made the Sunday Times rich list on equal place with the Queen! Anyone who has read the book McMafia will realise that organised crime noticed the money made by Palmer and moved in on his enterprises. The police and insurance companies were also trying to get back stolen money. There was a lot of paranoia, jealousy and shootings, so much so that it was said that the Brinks Mat gold was cursed.British organised crime gangs and enemies of Palmer were also making moves against him. Palmer was never really able to enjoy his wealth and always had to wear a bullet proof vest when he was in public. Having just played back the recording while uploading I realise that I have not thanked Damselfly for providing the backing music or you for listening. The main sources of information for this podcast were the two Wensley Clarkson books: Killing Goldfinger and the Curse of Brinks Mat,  Goldfinger and me by Marnie Palmer, various other books and newspaper articles. http://www.strangestoriesuk.com

Misha Glenny's groundbreaking study of global organized crime is now the inspiration for an eight-part AMC crime drama starring James Norton (War and Peace), Juliet Rylance, and David Strathairn. With the collapse of the Soviet Union, the fall of the Berlin Wall, and the deregulation of international financial markets in 1989, governments and entrepreneurs alike became intoxicated by dreams of newly opened markets. But no one could have foreseen that the greatest success story to arise from these events would be the worldwide rise of organized crime. Today, it is estimated that illegal trade accounts for one-fifth of the global GDP. In this fearless and wholly authoritative investigation of the seemingly insatiable demand for illegal wares, veteran reporter Misha Glenny travels across five continents to speak with participants from every level of the global underworld - police, victims, politicians, and even the criminals themselves. What follows is a groundbreaking, propulsive look at an unprecedented phenomenon from a savvy, street-wise guide.

Was ist überhaupt Clubhouse? 19 weeks in and things are getting even more weird in the virtual Madaxeman Lockdown studio, as the regular team of 7 expands with a couple of pithy, succinct and historically accurate contributions from Mrs Andy in this weeks rambling episode.    Mixed in amongst the usual melange of gaming- and painting-themed content the happy podcastonaughts today ponder whether it is fair to say that nude badgers are indeed living the dream, whether any 8th century axe-makers would have considered advertising through shirt sponsorship, if glueing a vibrating love egg into the two halves of a 28mm plastic horse is good for helping them not fall over on the tabletop, how many hussars would have taken part if McMafia had been filmed in Paris rather than London, if Ulrikakakaka Johnsson would have made a better chariot runner or charioteer archer, and whether El Dorado hops are actually a real thing or just a cunning ruse to make wannabe hipsters pay double price for a can of Stella Artois with a funny label stuck on it. One of my rituals when I go to the cinema (remember the cinema? The place with the big screen where you sit in the dark next to lots of people and have a collective experience?) Well, when I go I like to sit through all the credits at the end because I'm always amazed at how many people it takes to make something that's 90 minutes long. It's such a vast network of vital, interconnecting people. And one of those vital people is a music supervisor. I like to think of them as a DJ or selector for a movie but of course it's far more complicated than that. Which is why I have on today's episode, Lucy Bright to tell us more about it.With a degree in History of Art, Lucy started out at Mute Records during her gap year Mute records represent the likes of Nick Cave, New Order, Depeche Mode, and Goldfrapp. She then moved to Warner Classics for six years before leaving to manage acclaimed composer Michael Nyman - he wrote the music for the Oscar winning film The Piano & The 2018 Alexander McQueen documentary amongst many others. She was at music publishing company Music Sales for 10 years overseeing an extraordinary roster of film composers including Gabriel Yared (Cold Mountain,The English Patient), Ludovico Einaudi, Philip Glass, Nico Muhly (The Reader), Hildur Guðnadóttir (the woman who won the Oscar and every award going this year for her scoring of Joker). This year Lucy is starting a new venture with the launch of her own music publishing company, Bright Notion Music.Lucy has music supervised some of the most critically-acclaimed British films of recent years: Samantha Morton's directorial debut The Unloved, Lynne Ramsey's The Swimmer, John Maclean's Slow West, Justin Kurzel's Assassin's Creed, Michael Almereyda's Marjorie Prime and Sean Durkin's The Nest starring Jude Law and Carrie Coon which premiered at Sundance Film Festival 2020. Her work in television is equally renowned including Southcliffe, McMafia and Shane Meadows's This is England ‘90 and The Virtues. She is currently working on TV drama Little Birds for Sky Atlantic and LIFE for BBC One (jointly with Catherine Grieves). We talk about her journey into music supervision, what inspires her, the role of a composer within the context of film, the under-representation of female composers in the film industry, and the lessons learned along the way.Guest: Lucy BrightTitle: The artist is the film director and you are there to serve their visionInstagram: @lightlightbrightAlbums/Artists on playlist: Bob Dylan Oh Mercy, Leonard Cohen, Memories from the album Death of a Ladies' Man and Rob Simonsen ReveriesTo support the podcast click here See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Since 2005, David Farr has been pursuing his passion as a screenwriter. As a staff writer on shows like ‘MI-5’ and ‘Outcasts,’ the English writer’s work has entered more of a solo career with the 2011 film version of ‘Hanna,’ which starred Saoirse Ronan, Cate Blanchett, Eric Bana, with Joe Wright in the director’s chair. Since the theatrical version, Farr penned the series ‘The Night Manager,’ a movie called ‘The Man With the Iron Heart,’ and he has additional credits for ‘McMafia’ and ‘Troy: Fall of a City.’ Now, he’s working on the reboot, televised version of ‘Hanna’ for Amazon. This time, the 8-episode first season stars Esme Creed-Miles, Joel Kinnaman and Mireille Enos. Essentially, the plot for the film and televised version “follows the journey of an extraordinary young girl raised in the forest, as she evades the relentless pursuit of an off-book CIA agent and tries to unearth the truth behind who she is…” In this interview, Farr discusses his love for existential spies, journeys of identity within character, best practices for longevity in television, and why it’s important to always understand the essence of story as a storyteller. Season Finales:Suits (USA)In need of an associate, big-time Manhattan corporate lawyer Harvey Specter hires the only guy who impresses him -- college dropout Mike Ross. The fact that Ross isn't actually a lawyer isn't lost on Specter, who believes his new right-hand man is a legal prodigy with the book smarts of a Harvard law grad and the street smarts of a hustler. However, in order to keep their jobs, the charade must remain strictly between these two unconventional thinkers.McMafia (AMC)Alex Godman, the English-raised son of an exiled Russian crime family, has spent years trying to evade his family's past and live on the straight and narrow, running a legitimate business and mapping out a future with his girlfriend Rebecca. As he struggles against the lure of corruption and his family's former mafia connections, tragedy strikes and he finds himself drawn into the shadowy underworld of international crime, fighting for survival and revenge. "McMafia" is inspired by journalist Misha Glenny's best-selling book of the same name.Howards End (Starz)Helen Schlegel falls for Paul Wilcox, but is rebuffed. Her sister Margaret becomes friends with his mother, who promises her the family house, Howards End. Unfortunately, after her death, the will disappears and it appears the inheritance will disappear. Until the widower, Henry Wilcox, becomes attracted to Margaret. Season Premieres:Westworld (HBO)Westworld isn't your typical amusement park. Intended for rich vacationers, the futuristic park -- which is looked after by robotic "hosts" -- allows its visitors to live out their fantasies through artificial consciousness. No matter how illicit the fantasy may be, there are no consequences for the park's guests, allowing for any wish to be indulged. "Westworld" -- which is based on the 1973 Michael Crichton movie of the same name -- features an all-star cast that includes Oscar winner Anthony Hopkins and Golden Globe winner Ed Harris. Into the Badlands (AMC)AMC's goal for "Into the Badlands" was twofold: produce a compelling character drama, and introduce the highest caliber of martial arts filmmaking to a weekly, ongoing series. Left in the hands of creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar ("Shanghai Noon," "Smallville"), the series stars Daniel Wu as ruthless, prodigiously skilled warrior Sunny, who mentors teenage boy M.K. during a spiritual journey across a feudal civilization known as the Badlands. With the help of trained assassins like Sunny, the area is ruled by rival barons, and for decades Quinn has consistently outflanked and outmaneuvered his fellow barons to keep the upper hand. His invincibility, however, begins to fade in light of brazen attacks by the newest baron, The Widow, who believes M.K. is the key to her success. As the battle for control of the Badlands heats up, the destinies of the stoic assassin and the impetuous teenager become intertwined. Genius (Nat Geo)Season 2 of the Emmy-nominated series "Genius" tells the story behind Pablo Picasso, one of the 20th century's most influential, controversial, and celebrated artists. Also explored are the muses who inspired him. Starring Antonio Banderas in the titular role, hourlong episodes explore how the Spanish-born Picasso's passion and creativity were inseparably linked to his personal life, which included tumultuous marriages, numerous affairs and constantly shifting political and personal alliances. The Handmaid’s Tale (Hulu)Based on the best-selling novel by Margaret Atwood, this series is set in Gilead, a totalitarian society in what used to be part of the United States. Gilead is ruled by a fundamentalist regime that treats women as property of the state, and is faced with environmental disasters and a plummeting birth rate. In a desperate attempt to repopulate a devastated world, the few remaining fertile women are forced into sexual servitude. One of these women, Offred, is determined to survive the terrifying world she lives in, and find the daughter that was taken from her.t See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

While they stand on opposite ends of the social and moral spectrums and have a serious distrust for each other, the partners must learn to work together if they're going to survive until the end of the world.Champions (NBC)From executive producers Mindy Kaling and Charlie Grandy, brothers Vince and Matthew are living every single man's dream. They own the fifth largest gym in Brooklyn, N.Y., date an endless string of beautiful women and share a bachelor pad in fraternal bliss. But their simple life gets complicated fast when Vince's high school fling Priya surprises him with Michael, their fabulous and feisty 15-year-old son with big city dreams. As Michael plots his rise to fame, fitness-obsessed Vince and Matthew must now work out how to be a strong and supportive family.Jessica Jones (Netflix)This Netflix original chronicles the life of one of the darker Marvel characters, the mysterious Jessica Jones. When a tragedy puts an end to her short-lived career as a superhero, Jessica settles in New York City and opens her own detective agency, called Alias Investigations, which seems to be called into cases involving people who have special abilities. Suffering from post-traumatic stress syndrome, Jessica wants to do good, but her primary interest isn't in saving the world, it's saving her apartment and getting through each day. Based on a graphic novel intended for adults, this is not a superhero story for the kids.Collateral (Netflix)London detectives investigating the seemingly random murder of a pizza delivery man uncover a convoluted case of interlocking circumstances amid a cross-section of British society.Sneaky Pete (Amazon Prime)Giovanni Ribisi plays the role of Marius, a con man who tries to leave his old life behind by assuming the identity of his cell mate, Pete. While Pete's family doesn't have reason to suspect that he is not their long-lost loved one, they are a colorful group with their own secrets and lies that could make life as dangerous as the world Marius was hoping to escape. Marius must find a way to keep his lies from backfiring as he deals with unexpected situations that come his way. Executive producers include Graham Yost and Bryan Cranston. Strap on those skis because it's time to escape Blofeld's lair in Episode 11 of The Words Are Not Enough! In this episode Griffin (@griffschiller) and Brody (@brodyserravalli) discuss the following:Tomorrow Never Lies:* Ed Sheeran * Speaking with James Cordon while promoting his new album on the Late Late Show, Ed Sheeran discussed his interest in performing a James Bond title song: “With Bond, I've had a theme tune written for about three years, just in case,” he said, admitting filmmakers haven't got round to actually asking him yet. “But it's good, it's good.”* James Norton * Actor James Norton has overtaken Tom Hardy as the most favoured to assume the role of 007 after Daniel Craig, with bookies upping his odds to 5/2 after this role in McMarfia. * On the Bond rumours, Norton said: “It's lovely, wonderful and complimentary to be involved in that conversation but it's just a rumour mill and that's as far as it goes. I did mention at the time that those scenes would possibly contribute to the [Bond] rumours but McMafia is its own beast. I hope Daniel Craig does five more movies and can keep the rumours on himself. I'm a big fan of his and - selfishly - I'd like him to carry on.”* Female 007 * Teresa May: Speaking with journalists on her RAF Voyager, Teresa May offered her thoughts on the 13th Doctor in BBC's long-running series, Dr Who, being played by a woman. The conversation however, quickly turned to Bond: “I think it's a great move forward for girl power that there is going to be a female Doctor Who. And one day there should be a female James Bond.” But when asked who should replace Craig, May added: “I don't know who is being lined up. I read the other day that James Norton was being talked about as a possible James Bond. “I think he did an interview where he said he'd quite like to.” When asked if Norton was her favourite for the part, she replied: “That's a leading question! I don't know who the other candidates might be.” * Christoph Waltz: When asked about his thoughts of a female Bond while promoting his latest film, Downsizing, Waltz told Mr Porter: “Why? Because [Italian feminist writer] Oriana Fallaci said so? Come on. Have your own movie if you want. Why does it have to be James Bond? What would be her first name? Jemima? My answer is decidedly not.”* Babs says we shouldn't expect any major Bond news until 2018 * Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter's Awards Chatter podcast, via The Spy Command, Barbara Broccoli confirmed that major decisions regarding Bond 25 will not be made until early 2018, adding that film's director and title are "still to be determined" * Babs also confirmed that the script for Bond 25 is still in development, under veteran Bond scribes Neal Purvis and Robert Wade: "[They're busy] working away, trying to come up with something fantastic.” * With regards to the ongoing rumours surrounding the distribution of the Bond film, Babs said this: “It's exciting to be courted. We'll hopefully be making that decision early next year.”Shaken but Heard:* Favourite stories of the year* Best snow action sequences in the series* OHMSS appreciation hour SUBSCRIBE to the Men vs. Movies YouTube channel: www.youtube.com/channel/UCAlhR6RxXQux2LWok1cIL6wFollow us on Twitter: @MenVsMoviesLike us on Facebook: www.facebook.com/menvs.movies/ --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/the-words-are-not-enough/support
