Cardinal Sarah reflects on the powerful prayer of our Pope Emeritus Benedict 16th. He refers to the term adoration - deep love and respect and worship. For me, adoration is a very important part of my faith where I spend time with God just giving Him thanks and praise. But I am often reminded that in these same moments, He is gazing on me, spending time with me in this very intentional way. I was at adoration right after a penance service this past Advent and beautiful advent piano music was being played. I find myself captured within the silence of the melody as I looked upon the Lord - it was crazy powerful and the Lord spoke to me in this silence - He said, “Love on my people, David.” I knew exactly what He meant as He was reinforcing something He had been telling me for months amidst the noise of my everyday life. But in that time, on that night, in the precious silence of the melody, I heard HIM in a real and substantive way. In His own way, He was calling me to be a pillar like we discussed yesterday in very simple ways to everyone I meet. God knows what charisms I have, He knows what charisms you have - we just have to let Him use them.

On Dec. 31, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI died at the age of 95. During his long career as a towering figure in the Catholic Church in the second half of the twentieth century and beyond—especially his decades helming the Vatican's powerful Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, then as Pope and Pope Emeritus—Benedict was involved in nearly all of the Church's crises and controversies. He cracked down on liberation theologians, held a reactionary line on homosexuality at the height of the AIDS crisis, and slowly awakened to the depths and depravity of the Catholic sex-abuse scandal—but he also wrote movingly about God's love and took positions on the environment and the economy that would be mostly ignored by his conservative fans. To try to make sense of Benedict's life and work, especially his relationship with American Catholics, Matt is joined by Michael O'Loughlin, the national correspondent at America magazine and author of Hidden Mercy: AIDS, Catholics, and the Untold Stories of Compassion in the Face of Fear.Listen to the entire conversation by subscribing to Know Your Enemy on Patreon!
