FAN MAIL--We would love YOUR feedback--Send us a Text MessageThe death of Pope Francis has thrust the Catholic Church into its ancient process of selecting a successor, but this conclave comes with unique challenges. Unlike previous transitions, today's cardinal electors have had fewer opportunities to meet face-to-face, creating an atmosphere where many voters know surprisingly little about potential candidates. This fascinating episode breaks down the leading contenders to become the 267th successor to St. Peter, categorizing them into three broad ideological factions. The conservative bloc, approximately 50 cardinals strong, emphasizes doctrinal clarity and traditional teachings. Their frontrunners include Hungary's Cardinal Erdő, Guinea's Cardinal Sarah (who could become the first sub-Saharan African pope), Dutch Cardinal Eijk, and American favorite Cardinal Burke, though geopolitical considerations make an American pope unlikely. The liberal faction, smaller but influential, aligns with Francis's progressive vision. Their standard-bearers include the Philippines' Cardinal Tagle (nicknamed "Francis II"), Malta's Cardinal Grech, and Germany's outspoken Cardinal Marx. However, the most crucial role may belong to moderate cardinals who can bridge divides. Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Parolin leads this group, alongside promising candidates from Italy, France, and African nations.Geographic considerations add complexity to the selection process. With Catholicism booming in Africa and Asia but declining in traditional European strongholds, many believe the Church will continue moving away from Italian popes. Francis deliberately appointed cardinals from underrepresented regions, creating the most globally diverse College in history. Most revealing is the unpredictability of conclaves. No one expected the conservative John Paul II to emerge from a liberal College in 1978, nor Francis from a conservative group in 2013. As Catholics worldwide pray for the Holy Spirit's guidance over this sacred process, we're reminded that divine wisdom often transcends human calculations and expectations.Key Points from the Episode: • Conservative cardinals (approximately 50 electors) emphasize traditional teachings and oppose progressive reforms• Leading conservative candidates include Hungary's Cardinal Erdő (72), Guinea's Cardinal Sarah (79), Netherlands' Cardinal Eijk, and America's Cardinal Burke• Liberal cardinals (fewer than 45 electors) align with Francis's progressive reforms and outreach to marginalized communities• Liberal frontrunners include Philippines' Cardinal Tagle, Malta's Cardinal Grech, and Germany's Cardinal Marx• Moderate cardinals are crucial bridge-builders between factions with Vatican Secretary Parolin leading this group• Africa and Asia's growing Catholic population may influence selection toward candidates from these regions• Conclave outcomes remain unpredictable, as evidenced by previous surprise selections like John Paul II and Francis• Catholics worldwide pray for the Holy Spirit's guidance in this crucial decisionLet us pray for these cardinal electors, that they may have wisdom in their next election of the successor to the apostle Peter, and as always, let's keep fighting the good fight.Other resources: College of Cardinals websiteWant to leave a review? Want to reach out to us? Want to leave a comment or review? Want to give us a suggestion or berate Anthony? Send us a text by clicking this link!As the Catholic Church stands at a crucial crossroads following Pope Francis's death, an unprecedented papal conclave takes shape. Unlike previous elections, today's College of Cardinals features a dramatically altered demographic landscape—European representation has dropped from 58% to 42%, with significant increases from Africa, South America, and Asia. Perhaps most striking is the unfamiliarity many cardinal electors have with one another, creating an atmosphere of uncertainty and possibility. The stakes couldn't be higher as competing visions for Catholicism's future clash behind closed doors. Will the cardinals select a continuity candidate who maintains Francis's pastoral approach, or will they pivot toward a more traditional leader who might restore practices like the Latin Mass? Prominent contenders like Hungary's Cardinal Erdő, Africa's Cardinal Sarah, and Jerusalem's Cardinal Pizzaballa each represent distinct paths forward, with theological implications that will resonate throughout the global Church.Media influence looms large over these proceedings, with publications like The New York Times framing narratives that some observers view as attempts to shape the outcome. Meanwhile, recent converts to Catholicism watch with particular interest, having never experienced a pontiff who fully embraced traditional Catholic sensibilities. The generational divide among the faithful adds another layer of complexity—younger Catholics often gravitate toward ancient rituals and clear doctrinal positions, while Church leadership frequently focuses on issues that resonate with older generations.Despite Francis's efforts to decentralize Church leadership, many recognize that "Catholicism and Europe are inseparable," suggesting a European pope might best address the continent's faith crisis. As cardinals deliberate, they must balance competing priorities: healing divisions, addressing secular challenges, and determining whether the Church needs stability or transformation after a tumultuous decade.Whatever smoke rises above the Sistine Chapel—whether signaling radical change or careful continuity—this historic moment will shape Catholicism's trajectory for decades to come. As Pope Francis celebrates his eleventh year on the Chair of Peter, some Catholics might disagree on his legacy; but all agree that his papacy has been consequential. In this episode, we look at some of the central teachings of Pope Francis and especially the current Synod on Synodality, and his call for missionary conversion and for a Church with  an open doors that goes out to those at the existential peripheries of life. We note that since the retirement of Cardinal Sarah in 2021, and the end to  Cardinal Turkson's tenure at the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development (2022), there is no African Cardinal heading any Roman dicastery. It is important at this decisive point in the papacy that Africa's voices, contributions, and representation be prioritized and respected  given that what goes on in the Church in Africa is going to determine the future and shape of Catholicism into the future.

The big story over the Christmas break was the announcement from the Vatican about "blessing same sex couples." Some traditionalists have hailed this as pastorally helpful and clarifying, while others call it confusing and potentially troubling. Meanwhile the mainstream news reported the Roman Catholic Church as moving toward gay affirming. I've asked my friend, Anthony Costello, back on the show to help us sort through the confusion and share his perspective as a thoughtful former Catholic about why Protestants ought to care about these developments. After he had fed the people, Jesus made the disciples get into a boat and precede him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. After doing so, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When it was evening he was there alone. Meanwhile the boat, already a few miles offshore, was being tossed about by the waves, for the wind was against it. During the fourth watch of the night, he came toward them walking on the sea. When the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified. “It is a ghost,” they said, and they cried out in fear. At once Jesus spoke to them, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.” Peter said to him in reply, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw how strong the wind was he became frightened; and, beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught Peter, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” After they got into the boat, the wind died down. Those who were in the boat did him homage, saying, “Truly, you are the Son of God.” Matthew 14:22-33   Sacred Silence Jesus was seeking silence and solitude for prayer after he heard about John the Baptist's death (see Matthew 13:13). He and his apostles crossed the Sea of Galilee to a deserted place, but the crowds raced around the sea, and they were waiting to hear him preach. Although he was seeking solitude, he was moved with pity and preached to them. When the crowds dispersed, Jesus sent his apostles ahead, and “he went up on the mountain by himself to pray.”   When Jesus prays to the Father, he heeds his own advice. He does not make a spectacle on the streets or in the synagogues. He seeks out solitude, and his Father hears him in secret (see Matthew 6:6)   In The Power of Silence, Cardinal Robert Sarah explains the importance of silence in our lives today. He says:   If man seeks God and wants to find him, if he desires a life of the most intimate union with him, silence is the most direct path and the surest means of attaining it. Silence is of capital importance because it enables the Church to walk in the footsteps of Jesus, imitating his thirty silent years in Nazareth, his forty days and forty nights of fasting, and intimate dialogue with the Father in the solitude and silence of the desert. (pp. 219-20)   The power of silence is rooted in the imitation of Christ. Jesus taught us to pray silently and frequently demonstrated the importance of silent prayer.   In the same book, Cardinal Sarah warns that silence can become a kind of idolatry if we seek silence as a goal in itself: “We do not seek silence for its own sake, as though it were our goal. We seek silence because we seek God. And we will find it if we are silent in the very depths of our heart” (p. 193). We must not enjoy silence as a final end, but we must use it as a means of drawing closer to the Father in heaven.   In the modern world, we are constantly surrounded by noise. Our phones are always sounding notifications, and even when they are not notifying us of anything, we are continuously checking them. The drive to work is filled with noise from the radio or some podcast or audiobook to which we listen. Many men walk around with AirPods in their ears, oblivious to the world around them. It is so hard to find time to listen to God silently. Even the calls to silent prayer in the Mass are frequently omitted. Like a storm at sea, the noise of the modern world threatens to overtake us.   As Exodus men, we have committed to daily silent prayer. This is a time to turn off the interior and exterior distractions that threaten to eliminate the time we have set aside to listen to God.   Today, honor your commitment to silent prayer. Imitate Jesus and go to a deserted place to sit silently, drawing closer to your Father in heaven.

Today Cardinal Sarah talks about how Christ assumed human form to confront us with his absolute love. I have been confronted by a human being but not confronted with Love. It is hard to comprehend that, but it is true.Cardinal Sarah goes on to say that God's only power is to love in silence. That brings me to immediately think the passion of Jesus, where he remained silent even when he was being questioned by Pilot. That was the silence of his love, the love that bore our sins and died for our transgressions. But that is not all, Cardinal Sarah then talks about how St. Augustine and St. John of the Cross went through their own desert experience where they encounter God's love; they were confronted by God's love in this silence.Take away: When you arevconfronted by God, are you like I used to be and ran away? I feel his love regardless of what brokenness I bring to him that day. He holds and loves me, most often times without even having to say a word. Today I hear Cardinal Sarah talk about how when we advance in the mysteries of God the more, we tend to lose our speech, we become mute. Because in this intimate relationship no words are required. Cardinal Sarah goes on to say that we disappear in this greatest of silence. This is very true for me; I have become so comfortable in sitting in silence with him that I lose tract of time. This type of relationship you are comfortable sitting in silence because no words are required.I have a friend who told be about a couple friend of his, they had been married for many years and when they hosted dinner it was like an orchestrated event as they worked together in the kitchen either prepping or cleaning up. Each new what they had to do and the task was completed without a word. Our live with God could be that way, if we allowed God to orchestrate and we completed daily tasks in a mute state because words were not necessary. We know what God wants from us, because he currently does not NEED any thing from us. That kind of relationship would be the so desperately needed peace and joy in our lives, the one we all truly want.Take Away: How does God speak to you? Can you sit with him in silence with the love and presence of his peace that renders you speechless? If not ask for his divine assistance to help you accomplish this.
