December 26, 2024 Daily Devotion: "Building Bridges for Peace" Psalm 122:8-9 New Living Translation 8 For the sake of my family and friends, I will say, “May you have peace.”9 For the sake of the house of the Lord our God, I will seek what is best for you, O Jerusalem. Psalm 122:8-9 (NIV) states, “For the sake of my family and friends, I will say, ‘Peace be within you.' For the sake of the house of the Lord our God, I will seek your prosperity.” This passage emphasizes the importance of community and the spiritual well-being of our loved ones. In this Psalm, David speaks of his deep love for Jerusalem, representing not just a city, but the dwelling place of God. His commitment to praying for peace reflects the heart of God's people who are called to intercede for their community and church. Just as David sought the prosperity of Jerusalem, we are called to seek the welfare of our families and churches, recognizing that their peace affects our own. As we gather in fellowship, we are reminded that our prayers for others can lead to blessings and peace in our lives. Let's take this message to heart, committing to uplift our communities and families in prayer, just as David did for Jerusalem.
Christ's advent brings peace because it assures us that Christ is enthroned as king.
Peace is more than just a relaxing day on the couch, it's a realization of your deepest desires. Yet, we habitually desire the wrong things. Join us in this teaching as we comb through Psalm 84 to find the root of our peace, in desiring the thing that can give us true peace this Christmas season.

God's Word for Today 4 Apr 2024 In my distress I called to the LORD, and he answered me. 2 Deliver me, O LORD, from lying lips, from a deceitful tongue. 3 What shall be given to you, and what more shall be done to you, you deceitful tongue? 4 A warrior's sharp arrows, with glowing coals of the broom tree! 5 Woe to me, that I sojourn in Meshech, that I dwell among the tents of Kedar! 6 Too long have I had my dwelling among those who hate peace. 7 I am for peace, but when I speak, they are for war! -Psa 120:1-7 ESV I AM FOR PEACE Each of the psalms from Psa 120 to 134 is entitled ‘A Song of Ascents' (RSV; NIV). These psalms were apparently sung by worshippers as they journeyed up to Jerusalem for the various annual festivals. It is also noted that they have been arranged in a sequence that reflects the feelings of the travelers. That is, the travelers are singing expressing their emotions through these songs as they step-out and begin their journey from distant regions to Jerusalem, and ultimately join in the temple ceremonies. This chapter opens with a cry from one who lives in a distant region and is bitterly persecuted by his neighbours (v.1-2). In my distress I called to the LORD, and he answered me. 2 Deliver me, O LORD, from lying lips, from a deceitful tongue. They suffered insults, as like sharp arrows piercing and burning him like red-hot coals. He prays that God's punishment of them will be just as painful (3-4). 3 What shall be given to you, and what more shall be done to you, you deceitful tongue? 4 A warrior's sharp arrows, with glowing coals of the broom tree! He is tired of being victimized. He feels as if he lives in a far-off land where he is surrounded by attackers from hostile tribes. He will set out for Jerusalem and seek some peace and refreshment of spirit in God's house (v.5-7). 5 Woe to me, that I sojourn in Meshech, that I dwell among the tents of Kedar! 6 Too long have I had my dwelling among those who hate peace. 7 I am for peace, but when I speak, they are for war! He closes this psalm in a mild lament. The psalmist is displeased with his neighbors. They are traveling from distant lands, where they were often persecuted. Most scholars agree, however, that Meshech and Kedar here are idiomatic references to “barbarous and hostile people.”[The Pulpit Commentary] “Meshech was a nation of Asia Minor, and Kedar was part of the Syrian desert south of Damascus.” [The Interpreter's Bible] Apparently, they were actually pilgrims from such hostile places to join the annual processions to Jerusalem. Last Saturday, the terrorist group, Hamas, unleashed horrible violence on Israel, sparking a new war in that region, which has, to date, killed thousands of people and injured thousands more. With the outbreak of this war has come a huge wave of prophecy pundits, wresting many Scriptures from their context, including the command to pray for peace from Psalm 122. How should Christians be thinking, and praying about this horrific war? Psalm 122 provides an answer.

Paul speaks of a peace that passes understanding in our worship text today (Phil 4:7). This promise of superior peace via the Gospel which inspired and encouraged the early church was not a concept novel to the New Testament however. Rest of soul secured in the covenant blessings of God is a theme explored long before in the Psalms, particularly our text today: Psalm 121. This, the second song of ascent, answers the anguished cry of the first (Ps 120) with the assurance of supernatural peace. A striking poetic structure in this song is one of progressive illumination. Each verse takes up and expands a theme introduced by the previous one. This device lifts the singer and carries him along toward glories on the horizon coming more clearly into view as the song progresses. As the author explores concepts universal to the human condition, we may readily apply the discipline of discernment to promises of hope we encounter in our daily lives. Ps 121 equips its readers to distinguish between legitimate and delusional notions of peace of mind. May we be sharpened accordingly.
Psalm 144 is a psalm of war and peace. Many Christians today are bothered by the holy wars of the Hebrew Scriptures with their bloodshed and violence. Nevertheless, they are the result of God's war on sin. Since Adam's fall, God has been at war with sin. In His war against sin, God fights for His people — Israel and the Church. As God's people, we are engaged in spiritual warfare. Our weapons are not fleshly but spiritual. The enemy is Satan and his demonic forces. Because the Church is engaged in this spiritual battle, Psalm 144 is as relevant today as when David penned it.
