In this episode, The Prof (@ProfPlaysGames) and The Dev (@summerspeak) dig into their hopes and dreams for Sony in 2019. Then they talk about the games they've been playing: Heroes of the Storm, Spider-Man, Quarantine Circular, Magic Arena, and Dragalia Lost. Like our podcast? We've got some catching up to do after last week, so we've got a lot of games we've been playing to talk about including: Onrush, Cluster Truck, Notmycar Beta, Devil May Cry 1, 3, 4 & 5 beta, Quarantine Circular & Dragalia Lost. We've got a "quick" Destiny Download. (Starts about 1:00:00 and ends 1:17:12). In the news, Epic Games is making their cross-platform toolkit available to all developers for FREE! And they've launched their new Epic Games Store, a place to buy PC/mac games. They will take a much smaller cut from developers than Steam does! Then Discord announced that their game store will take even less from developers! So it's a good time to be an indie game developer! In our feature, we discuss which games we're most excited for in 2019 (or possibly coming in 2019...or we just hope might come in 2019). We list our top 6 as well as some listener choices. Games include Anthem (big surprise, right?), New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe, Devil May Cry 5, Trials Rising, The Division 2, Ghosts of Tsushima, The Last of Us 2, Titanfall 3 (it's REAAALLLY wishful thinking), the new Core Pokemon game, Resident Evil 2, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3, Town, Kingdom Hearts 3, Psychonauts 2, Phoenix Wright, RPG Maker MV, Digimon Survive, and Diablo Immortal. contact@geekheartgames.com Twitter & Facebook: @geekheartgames Twitch.tv/GeekHeartGames geekheartgames.com/youtube geekheartgames.com/discord geekheartgames.com/shirts or geekheartgames.com/shirt Cody: @comicbookcody. We're joined this episode by indie figurehead Mike Bithell, developer of Thomas Was Alone, Volume and bitesize text adventure Subsurface Circular. Recorded just a few days after the surprise launch of the latter's spiritual successor, Quarantine Circular, we speak to Bithell about the advantages and potential of releasing games without any marketing build-up. We also discuss the benefits of developing shorter games, the limitations this creates, and why embracing these limitations is the key to crafting a tight and easily digestible experience. As always, you can find more news, analysis and insight into the world behind video games at www.gamesindustry.biz. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
This month Nick and Eric discuss the economics of robot sentience in Subsurface Circular and the tricky trust issues of alien first-contact in Quarantine Circular.
This week, the boys are going deep on Quarantine Circular, Bithell Games’ follow-up to last year’s Subsurface Circular. They spend some time comparing and contrasting Quarantine and Subsurface, discussing their use of communication and puzzles and how each game treats these differently. Additionally, the game sparks a conversation about science fiction tropes and the manner in which they are employed. Also, despite his insistence that he won’t stumble over his words, Blake absolutely does. Jordan makes him pay dearly for his mistake. If you are interested in following the creators on twitter, check out @mikeBithellAnd also explore the game’s soundtrack if you enjoy good music: https://danlesac.bandcamp.com/album/quarantine-circular
Randy tries Yoku's Island Express, the latest in the crowded dung beetle/fruit-trading/pinball adventure genre. D.J. goes on a leisurely cruise in Quarantine Circular. And, of course, Yakuza. This time we’re talking about Shadespire, Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor Martyr and don’t once comment on how bad a name that is, Quarantine Circular, Stellaris and Factorio. There’s a video version as well of course.
Mike Bithell's follow-up to Subsurface Circular is another single sitting dialogue driven text adventure game, but this time it's on a boat! Also there's an alien. We discuss the second “Bithell Short”, a spiritual sequel...
We have a big discussion around the new short, narrative experience from Bithell Studio, ‘Quarantine Circular’. It then does well at creeping its way into almost everything else we discuss this week. Lucy also chats Shift Quantum, Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon and Castlevania whilst Ben’s been battling against Mass Effect: Andromeda. They both have two beers this week. Ben starts with the Pressure Drop and Verdant collab ‘The Experiment Requires That You Continue’ DDH NEIPA and moves onto a Cloudwater special release DIPA v3.1. Lucy has two Milkshakes from Unbarred Brewery, the Milkshake IPA and the Honeycomb Milkshake Pale.
