This week, Matt “2Mello” Hopkins — composer, sound designer, and artist — joins us to discuss the ins and outs of audio. From working on soundtracks and compilations to differentiating composition work from sound design, we run through the gamut of audio work in games, including Mello’s conscious effort to take a step away from the industry due to its pervasive labor issues. Mello also discusses his podcast, The Sample Study, his dream of becoming a sample historian, and the joys and stresses of running a podcast. Games include Marvel’s Spider-Man; Subsurface Circular; Get in the Car, Loser!; and Animal Crossing: New Leaf. Got a question for the show? Join us on Discord or email us at contact@ward-games.com!
This week we play Subsurface Circular, a game where you play a detective AI on an underground tram solving a fascinating mystery. We're joined this episode by indie figurehead Mike Bithell, developer of Thomas Was Alone, Volume and bitesize text adventure Subsurface Circular. Recorded just a few days after the surprise launch of the latter's spiritual successor, Quarantine Circular, we speak to Bithell about the advantages and potential of releasing games without any marketing build-up. We also discuss the benefits of developing shorter games, the limitations this creates, and why embracing these limitations is the key to crafting a tight and easily digestible experience. This week the boys discuss games they think are underrated and that definitely need a little more love as well as what they’ve been playing and watching recently. This includes Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, Subsurface Circular, Prey (2017), Alien Isolation and Minit.
This month Nick and Eric discuss the economics of robot sentience in Subsurface Circular and the tricky trust issues of alien first-contact in Quarantine Circular.
This week, the boys are going deep on Quarantine Circular, Bithell Games’ follow-up to last year’s Subsurface Circular. They spend some time comparing and contrasting Quarantine and Subsurface, discussing their use of communication and puzzles and how each game treats these differently. Additionally, the game sparks a conversation about science fiction tropes and the manner in which they are employed. Also, despite his insistence that he won’t stumble over his words, Blake absolutely does. Jordan makes him pay dearly for his mistake. If you are interested in following the creators on twitter, check out @mikeBithellAnd also explore the game’s soundtrack if you enjoy good music: https://danlesac.bandcamp.com/album/quarantine-circular

Hey guys and welcome to the Gaming Death Podcast Episode 239: I'm Chris and joining me tonight back from the land of Hobbits and Elves Mister Kaleb.Tonight's episode starts off with Assassin's Creed Origins, Assassin's Creed Rogue Remastered, and Burnout Paradise Remastered. All 3 are amazing, even if it surprises Kaleb that I don't buy DLC.Kaleb played 2 indie games on his flight to and Kiwi Land. The first was Subsurface Circular. Which is a talking sim that takes about 2 hours to complete. The second was Mulaka. A 2d Zelda clone based on Native American and Mexican folklore. This causes a bit of an argument between Chris and Kaleb about games and why someone would waste their time with a good game when there are other great indie games to play like Celeste or Stardew Valley. Then we get into some trailer talk. Especially Dead Pool 2. That trailer is so good annd everyone should go watch it right now. Then we answer your questions before wrapping up the show for tonight.Subscribe to us on youtube.com/gamingdeathvideoMake sure to check out geekyantics.net for more great podcast like this oneRemember to subscribe to us on iTunes, Stitcher, Google Play!

We talk Child of Light, drunken couch co-op after the Bristol Craft Beer Festival. Aadil talks a little about BoJack Horseman and its emotional realism, and Hexcells: Infinite. But don't worry Ben played some games: "Total War - Warhammer", the Chaos Warrior race DLC, "Subsurface Circular" and its very cool Developer Commentary mode, "The Vanishing of Ethan Carter", the "Call of Duty WW2 beta". We move on to talk about the upcoming Battle Royale mode on Fortnite, and the complaints from the PUBG crowd, as well as the politics behind cross-play (versus the technical hurdles), resulting in the inevitable console generation conversation. And we get a visit from Perry to boot. We start out with the "Banded Peak" west coast style IPA 'Southern Aspect', and Ben gets to taste the Smoked Dunkel from "Wild Rose Brewery", which we talked to the brewer about last episode.

You sit down, strap yourself in, and wait for the feels. You turn a knob until the bass integrated into the back of the seat starts to thrum and buzz. "Ah, I can feel that for sure," you say aloud to no one. Your mouth turns down at the side, half a frown, as you look through your options. The hosts said they recorded this a while ago, but you think they might have been too kind. On the screen: A collection of lost games for an 8-bit console. A new video game system called the "Xbox One X." A... new... 2D Sonic the Hedgehog. Suddenly the thrum is not just in your back, but everywhere. The hum unbearable, you swat at your gamer harness, but the five point lock holds you strong. The hum is everything, everywhere. "What year is this?!" you scream out into the night street, before it all goes black. Two scaly detectives pierce through the dark city streets - visible only by slight traces of light from neon signs overhead - cutting through the blackness of the night and the cold of the falling rain. Their clawed heels click against the rain-slick pavement. They approach an adjacent alleyway and reveal their badges to a world-weary officer standing guard as he allows them through the oppressive wall of police tape. At the alley's end, the chief of police can be seen standing over what appears to be a dead body. "What've we got?", one of the detectives asks, breaking the silence. "Raptors", the chief says in address, with a detectable hint of disdain. "Are you two *sure* this is your jurisdiction?" "Wouldn't be here if it weren't. This is our case now. So I'll ask again: What've we got?" "Victim is a small, red monster. No visible signs of trauma, blood, or struggle". "Has anybody bothered to search the body for evidence? Clues?", inquired the detectives in a strange unison. The chief throws up his hands in sarcastic defense. "Didn't want to tamper with the crime scene just yet . Heh - throw a meteor at the situation, so to speak." Awkward silence falls as the raptor detectives exchange glances. "Dinosaur joke." The chief goes silent, knowing his bad joke fell flat. "So are you guys like a cooky kinda dinosaur hivemind, or...?" They ignore him and approach the corpse. They make immediate note of an oddity: his furry, adorable hand has something in its grip. A note. Fumbling with their raptor claws, the detectives sloppily manage to unravel the parchment. On it was written four, ominous words: "Come on and slam". Discussed: Broken Left 4 Dead continues to surprise and amaze, culminating in a gripping tale of velociraptor detectives investigating a murdered Elmo. DuckTales (woo-oo). Seth finally plays Undertale, much to the chagrin of Todd's closed mind. Subsurface Circular. Todd finally closes the book on Nier: Automata -- at least for now.
