Croon•er (n) ['kru:nər]: a singer, particularly a male one, who sings sentimental songs in a soft, low voice. Decades before Elvis, The Beatles, Michael Jackson, Justin Bieber, or Uncle Gregg captured the hearts, imaginations, and undergarments of a swooning audience, crooners ruled the earth. The term typically conjures up golden throated singers like Bing Crosby, Nat "King" Cole, Tony Bennett, and Mel Torme interpreting the timeless songs of Jerome Kern, Johnny Mercer, George Gershwin, Cole Porter, and Irving Berlin. But one crooner reigned supreme: Ol' Blue Eyes himself, Frank Sinatra. He was "The Voice," possessing an instrument of rare, pure, crystalline perfection, with a phrasing, tone, and ability to charge every word with such emotion that you can palpably sense his audience getting weak in the knees. Never has Sinatra's legendary 1940s performing career sounded as immaculately and pristinely alive as it does on the SING label's recent archival projects: At the Hollywood Bowl 1943-48; Christmas on the Air; and the 5-LP box set Long Ago, Far Away, all lovingly restored and mastered by an award winning team and featuring exquisitely detailed liner notes by no greater authority than record producer, historian, archivist, author of the acclaimed Sessions with Sinatra, and host of the weekly radio show Sinatra Standard Time, Chuck Granata. We are fortunate to have Chuck join us this week to chat about all things Sinatra: the innovative new sets, his important role in pop music's breakthrough, his classic and most underrated albums, and the use of AI for good. And, of course, because O3L is focused on classic alternative music, our lists cover some of our favorite singers who carried on crooning into the '70s, '80s & '90s. Learn more about your ad choices. A Texas dude allegedly scored the Yu-Gi-Oh motherlode when he pulled multiple uncut sheets of first-edition Blue-Eyes White Dragon cards out of a dumpster -- yeah the same SDK-001 legend that single-handedly defined the game back in '99, now worth a cool million if the whole haul sells clean. He's already flipped over $60k on Facebook Marketplace and eBay with more factory-fresh sheets of Toon Dragons and bulk rares still trickling out, but the TCG community's split because the story reeks of "security breach contractor dump" and nobody's buying the pure dumpster fairy tale -- either way someone's about to get rich off literal garbage while the rest of us wonder how many more holy grails are rotting in Texas trash bins right now. Lord Hilentra is expanding his territory into the foothills of the Broken Spine mountains. His garrison at the new village of Stonehold has laid waste to villages populated by Tandrites, a culture that has mined these foothills for generations. Hilentra relies on Bismarten, the Warden of Stonehold, to lead his troops against these small villages. One of Bismarten's men, Dovokar, was unable to follow orders to slaughter villagers at Granite Town. Nicknamed “Backstep” because he retreats from battle, Dovokar now finds himself on the receiving end of a slaughter. Saluvaunt, a miner mortally wounded by Bismarten's men, survived long enough for three mountain witches to find him among the dead. They offered him vengeance against Hilentra and his brutal warden, Bismarten. Dying, with nothing left to lose, Saluvaunt accepted. The witches initiated a dark ritual—one meant to turn a grieving man into something far worse. The idea that light-colored eyes are generally more fragile is pretty widespread. They're less resistant to sunlight and require more protection. According to Medical News Today, it's estimated that around 8-10% of people in the world have blue eyes. When our eyes are open, rays of light pass through the pupil, the black opening in the center of the iris. As you may know, the pupil dilates when it's dark and contracts in bright light. When light rays strike the retina, they're captured by photoreceptor cells like rod cells, which are involved in night vision and cone cells that enable color vision, among other things. What's the function of the iris ? Is sunlight dangerous for the eyes? Is wearing sunglasses enough to protect my eyes ? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! Love and Death: ‘Poems 1912-13' by Thomas Hardy

Without Emma Gifford, we might never have heard of Thomas Hardy. Hardy's first wife was instrumental in his decision to abandon architecture for a writing career, and a direct influence – possibly collaborator – on his early novels. Their marriage, initially passionate, defied family expectations and class barriers, but by the time of Emma's death, it had deteriorated into hostility and bitterness. Out of grief, regret and ambivalence, Hardy produced the work Mark Ford considers to be among ‘the greatest poems in any language': Poems 1912-13. Mark and Seamus discuss the collection in the light of what Hardy called ‘strange necromancy': the reconfiguring of Emma as ghost, critic, corpse and mythic lover. They pay close attention to the tight structure and novelistic detail in these poems, which exemplify Hardy's gift for mixing the lyrical with realism. In this episode of The Shipwreck Show, Shipwreck is joined by special guest Abbey Blue Eyes for a grounded conversation about government overreach, spiritual resilience, and reclaiming personal and national sovereignty. They reflect on the emotional and psychological toll of speaking truth in a society bent on censorship, and how gaslighting from media and government institutions has become a tool for mass demoralization. The discussion highlights the importance of local action, parallel systems, and encouraging others to stand firm, especially when the cost of compliance keeps rising. Abbey shares personal insights about the cultural decay infecting public institutions, from education to medicine, and the spiritual battle that underpins today's political chaos. Together, they explore how faith, family, and courage are essential to pushing back against a system that thrives on apathy. With moments of humor, honesty, and hope, this episode delivers a powerful reminder that reclaiming sovereignty begins with standing up and refusing to bend to a broken system, no matter how small the stand may seem.

That Show Hasn't Been Funny In Years: an SNL podcast on Radio Misfits

Nick dives into a BuzzFeed survey rounding up some of the most beloved Saturday Night Live sketches of all time, as voted on by fans. From outrageous characters to iconic moments, these picks span generations—and the people definitely have good taste. Highlights include Will Ferrell, Jimmy Fallon, and Sean Hayes battling fashion snobbery (and microscopic cell phones) in “Jeffrey's,” Christopher Walken's unforgettable turn as the ever-creepy “Continental,” and Cecily Strong getting way too emotional over dog food alongside Seth Rogen. Melissa McCarthy wrangles some unruly animal balloons, and the legendary “Sinatra Group” sketch makes a triumphant return, with Phil Hartman channeling Ol' Blue Eyes, Jan Hooks as a brooding Sinead O'Connor, and Sting nailing a punked-out Billy Idol. Nick caps things off with a behind-the-scenes gem from Seth Meyers and a revisit to Taylor Swift's clever “Monologue Song.” It's a celebration of fan favorites, iconic chaos, and the sketches that left a mark. [EP 128]

I just wanted to talk about the iris today. A chill, colorful muscle donut that controls how much light hits your retina and makes you look good doing it. But no. UnitedHealthcare had to show up first—again—with a story so dark it makes retinal necrosis look like a fairy tale. We're talking Do Not Resuscitate orders getting denied by algorithms and patients dying because no human was watching. Then we finally pivot to the iris: how it works, how it fails, why it looks different in everyone, and what happens when people decide to change their eye color on purpose (spoiler: don't). I also touch on laser procedures, night vision contacts, LASIK myths, and iridology—which is basically astrology for your eyeballs. All that and a retinal wiring rant, because I can't help myself. Takeaways: UnitedHealthcare might be setting a new low. When your life is being managed by an algorithm that's literally ignoring your DNR order, we have officially lost the plot. The iris is not just decoration. It's a muscle. It's photoreactive. It's a vibe. And it's doing way more work than it gets credit for. Thinking about cosmetic eye color surgery? Just don't. It's like installing a tinted windshield inside your eye. Except it doesn't work. And might make you go blind. Night vision contact lenses are real(ish). But if you wear them in public, people are going to think you're either Batman or a sleep-deprived raccoon. Iridology is fake and somehow still thriving. It's amazing how far you can go in life with confidence and zero science. — To Get Tickets to Wife & Death: You can visit Glaucomflecken.com/live  We want to hear YOUR stories (and medical puns)! In this episode, Allan entertains Gilbert and Frank with tales of working at the late, great Fillmore East, crossing paths with Ol' Blue Eyes (and Groucho!) apprenticing for the legendary Roger Corman and helming the cult classic “Rock ‘n' Roll High School.” Also, Jackie Mason fails to connect, Malcolm McDowell talks to his crotch, Bruce Willis locks horns with Cybill Shepherd and “A Hard Day's Night” changes Allan's life forever. PLUS: P.J. Soles! “The Girl Can't Help It”! In praise of Alexander & Karaszewski! Zacherle introduces the Grateful Dead! And Allan (reluctantly) remembers “Caddyshack 2”! Some patients refuse to be healed. Some wounds refuse to close. Tonight, on Horror Hill, host Erik Peabody invites you to step into the cold, fluorescent-lit corridors of a hospital where something far worse than illness lingers. A young nurse begins a routine shift, tasked with monitoring a patient unlike any she's encountered before—a woman without a name, strapped down for her own safety… and for the safety of those around her. But as the night stretches on, it becomes clear that the true threat isn't what this patient might do—but what she knows. Turn down the lights and brace yourself for a tale of creeping dread, whispered secrets, and a terror that won't stay confined to a hospital bed. Because some things can't be treated. And some nightmares don't end when you wake up.
