Mediated Series - Part 6: Published in 2005, Mediated: How the Media Shapes Your World and the Way You Live In It , became Bridget's bible for understanding the changing media landscape and how it is affecting our society and behavior. Now she sits down with author Thomas de Zengotita for a multi-part series discussing the book chapter by chapter. In Part 6, Bridget and Thomas discuss the implications of technological advances and that the important thing to realize is that at the end of the day it isn't the technology itself, it's the way that it forces us into a whole new set of social situations that didn't used to exist. They explore how hard it is to get people to pay attention to technological advancements when they're concerned with social and ethical ones, people collaborating in their own disintegration by yielding to the social pressures that get generated by the technology, the way it alters our social arrangements, making the thing without stopping to think whether or not you should. They also cover the history of suicide, how the instinctive need for acknowledgment and attention that we're all born with has been hijacked by the media environment, wanting to feel like you have authority, audience capture, and the Bill Clinton scandal and shift it signaled regarding shame in our society. Hollywood feeds viewers a lot of problematic stereotypes regarding drug use, perhaps none as misleading as the notorious speedball. Users who combine heroin with a stimulant like methamphetamine or cocaine to create a single injectable liquid are said to be "speedballing," and when it is depicted on television or in books, it is used as the proverbial rock bottom of addiction, the final stop along the train of illogical and uncontrollable drug use. But injectable speedballs are actually pretty uncommon in the drug world. The ways these drugs are prepared and the way the work in the body usually makes combining them a hassle most of us don't bother with; we just shoot them up one-after-the-other.But there are also a lot of reasons why we are tempted to use these drugs together. The chemicals which compose the individual parts of the speedball concoction compliment one another in ways that entice users. They fill the gaps in each other's affects; they both have properties which the other lacks.Check out the research mentioned in this episode here: Kent Berridge & Terry Robinson, "Liking, Wanting & the Sensitization Theory of Addiction."Kent Berridge, "The Debate over Dopamine's Role in Reward: The Case for Incentive Salience." In MAINLINING PHILLY: Survival, Hope and Resisting Drug Addiction, Dr. Geri-Lynn Utter, PsyD., tells her disturbing but inspirational story of growing up as the child of drug addicts. Meeting Dr. Geri-Lynn, a Philadelphia native for the first time, it would be easy to assume she’s the product of the elite schools and glossy social life of the Mainline. But in fact, Geri-Lynn grew up in Kensington, her father and her mother both lifelong drug addicts. She saw first-hand the torment of addiction. The violence of the “life.” The despair that there could be no way out except death by overdose. Dr. Geri-Lynn Utter is a clinical psychologist who works with individuals struggling with drug addiction and severe mental illness. She is the child of parents who suffered from drug addiction. She has also witnessed countless addicts who lived and died in her parents’ wildly dysfunctional and often criminal inner circle during her childhood in one of Philadelphia’s roughest areas. We’ve gotten “high on conflict” according to Carly Fiorina. The former CEO of HP, first woman to run a Fortune 50 Company, and 2016 Presidential contender joins us on The Divided States of Media to discuss the threat of polarization and hate. She explains, “We are mainlining controversy like a drug… the media is amplifying it.”  During her time with HP, Carly was pushing Stakeholder Capitalism before it was cool. In this hour-plus conversation, she details her philosophy — “market share grows when customers and employees believe they are doing business with a company that is principled.” It’s what she calls, “enlightened self-interest”. More than virtue signaling, she breaks down the ways the media is failing its customers by allowing “entertainers masquerading as journalists” to rile us up, instead of putting in the time and energy to hear from both sides while encouraging collaboration and problem-solving to occur over time. She also explains how this correlates with distrust in media reaching an all-time high. My conversation with Carly was refreshingly clarifying, if not sobering. It’s a call to action for our industry to do the hard work, even if it feels like swimming upstream in our present climate. I hope you’ll make time for this one.

lived for most of its existence. * Avoiding groups because you're frustrated by group-think. * Accepting that a little bit of group-think isn't the end of the world. * Having a good one-on-one relationship with your wife and then ruining it by adding a kid. * Feeling like a boomer because you don't understand how your friends use emojis. * Adding a meta chat room where you try to figure out antlers emoji meaning "that's cute but also concerning." * The compromise between efficiency of communication and the difficulty of learning your new language. * Making your shower curtain out of chainmail. * A shower curtain with an image of what is exactly behind the shower curtain. * Having a clear shower curtain so you can see if there's a murderer in the shower without opening the STATE OF MIND

Hello and welcome back to STATE OF MIND, I’m Grace Kingswell - Nutritional Therapist and Lifestyle medicine advocate and boy do I have some incredible guests for you today!   A couple of months ago my Mum and I went on a girls holiday to Greystones in Ireland. The goal to was to do lots of walking, see some beautiful scenery and just generally get into nature… but also (on my part) to swim at Sunrise with The Happy Pear.   I’ve been following David and Stephen Flynn (aka The Happy Pear), for quite some time on Instagram and have always just been completely obsessed with their ethos, outlook on life, quirkiness and positivity. Having been a passionate swimmer for quite some time I was so excited to swim with a community that loved the cold water and the sea as much as I do.   I became pretty chummy with Dave and Steve and we kept in touch over the last few months via Instagram, and, when my husband and I went back to Greystones last month for his birthday, I was lucky enough to record a podcast with the boys.   Now if you follow Dave and Steve on insta you’ll know that these two have hectic lives, and given that Nick and I were only in Ireland for a few days it seemed unlikely that we were going to be able to squeeze the recording in. However, typical to their welcoming and unbelievably friendly nature, Steve and Dave invited Nick and I along with them on their road trip around Dublin where they were speaking in schools about climate change and eating more vegetables.   That day we woke up at 4.30am, squeezed in the car all together and hit to road. Our first stop was a sunrise swim at a beach in Dublin, followed by breakfast on the side of the road and a coffee in a local cafe. Then we drove to the first of two schools that the lads were speaking at and watched as they delivered an incredibly engaging talk on why we all need to be eating more fruit and veg.   Then it was off to the second school on the other side of town, then to a radio interview, and then, after lunch in the park, we found 30 minutes in which to sit down, get behind the mics and put the world to rights.   I was really keen not to just get Dave and Steve to retell their story of how they started The Happy Pear, since I know that you’ve all probably heard it before and they’d probably had enough of telling it for that day! So, I aimed, as ever to ask pertinent questions on topics such as the climate crisis, the future of humanity, creating positive change, metal attitudes and happiness.   I think the most profound thing I say all episode is: “you’re the happy pear. You’re really happy.” Yeh, well done Grace!   One of my favourite parts of the episode is the comparison they make between illness and wellness: There is only an “I” in illness, but a ‘we’ in wellness.   I absolutely adore Dave and Steve and am so grateful to them for coming on the podcast! I do just want to say before we kick off that this is definitely not the usually quality of audio that you can expect from STATE OF MIND. We recorded it out in the open in a park, plus they boys kept snatching the microphone from one another, which was pretty funny to watch!   I’m sure you can tell from the banter that we had a great time recording this. If you enjoy it PLEASE please do share the podcast with your friends and family and on social media! And of course, there’s that all important rating and review on the apple podcasts app.   Thank you so much again for your continued support of STATE OF MIND! @gracekingswell @thehappypear

The big question driving Episode EF6 is ... How do you acquire wisdom? Paul, a child prodigy who became a leading theoretical physicist in his early 30s, is facing a personal dilemma that is making him miserable—the realization that he might be woefully deficient in the one thing he most reveres. Although filled with endless knowledge, he isn't wise. But how? Isn't harnessing more and more information the key to becoming wise? In his attempt to figure it out, Paul might realize the obstacle he's facing isn't even close to being the final one. And can he feel like a complete person without it? The idea of wisdom goes back to Ancient Greece, from Socrates and Plato to modern day reinterpretations and research by sociologists like Monika Ardelt. In this episode's exploration of wisdom and how it manifests, the real questions come forth. Even if we can define wisdom, is that enough to come by it? Can anyone become truly wise in this world of rapidly changing information? And what will happen to the world if wisdom is actually declining in reverse proportion to the volumes of information available every day?
