In this episode of Pixelated Playgrounds, Bryan, Josh, and Clint finally arrive in Pharloom and dive deep into Hollow Knight: Silksong. We all fell in love with Hollow Knight when it launched in 2017 and even covered it on the show back in 2019, making Silksong a long-anticipated return. Team Cherry—Ari Gibson, William Pellen, and Jack Vine—have come a long way since the original Kickstarter, and Silksong's journey from planned DLC to full sequel reflects a uniquely protracted and unconventional development cycle. Just as notable is the team's decision to remain intentionally small, preserving creative control, efficiency, and passion while collaborating with key contributors like composer Christopher Larkin to elevate the experience.Silksong represents a major shift from its predecessor, most notably through Hornet, a fully voiced and evolving protagonist whose presence reshapes both narrative and gameplay. The game emphasizes speed, verticality, and tool-driven combat, with Pharloom's design flipping Hollow Knight's downward descent into a constant upward climb. We dig into the game's layered storytelling—Hornet's personal arc, the history of Pharloom and its people, and the larger cosmic forces at play—alongside its thematic focus on song, memory, and organized religion. Along the way, we debate difficulty, movement quirks, crest builds, boss design, and the shard system for tools. We also discuss Silksong's ambitious three-act structure, multiple endings, and whether it not only lives up to the original Hollow Knight. So join us as we close out the year exploring Team Cherry's world of bugs, beasts, beauty, and bosses.Three Word Reviews:Bryan - Smooth as SilkJosh - Flight in FightClint - Solid Send Off

Alex and Luke Talk Hollow Knight and Silksong. The duo dive into a Metroidvania double‑header: first the seminal Hollow Knight (Team Cherry, 2017) and then its long‑awaited sequel Hollow Knight: Silksong (Team Cherry, 2025). We unpack the evolution of the form — bug‑infested kingdoms, needle‑wielding protagonists, soaring difficulty curves — while comparing how the first game laid the groundwork and Silksong raised the bar (and the anguish). Two games, one legacy, endless edge‑of‑your‑seat platforming. Hollow Knight earned a Metacritic score of 87 on PC and 90 on Switch. HowLongToBeat estimates place a standard full play‑through around 27 hours (main story) and up to ~65 hours for completionists. Silksong debuted with a Metacritic score of 91 (PC), classified under “universal acclaim”. Play time estimates suggest around 40‑45 hours for a meaningful run, with full completion pushing closer to 60 hours+. All in all, two hefty games that demand stamina, precision, and a willingness to die… a lot.Alex tackled Hollow Knight on his Nintendo Switch OLED, while Luke jumped into Silksong on his Steam Deck. Luke's no stranger to the first game — he's beaten Hollow Knight before — but neither of them rolled credits this time around. Along the way they compare platform experiences, controller feel, and how each game's difficulty and structure landed differently for each of them. This episode is unofficially brought to you in part by bein' fat bs who can't stop eating the rest of our Halloween candy.Send us a Text Message! Hollow Knight: Silksong.Developed by Team Cherry, the same brilliant minds that gave us the cult-classic Hollow Knight back in 2017, and published independently by the same creative house, this upcoming sequel has been cooking longer than a prophecy waiting for its appointed time. Originally announced in 2019, and expected to drop sometime between late 2024 and early 2025, Silksong has become more than just a game. It's become a legend in itself. A whispered myth across forums, Discord channels, and Reddit caves, where gamers chant: ‘When will Hornet rise?
TEXT US YOUR THOUGHTS!Hosts **Tony Sisk** and **Jaime G** kick off the "video game fall season" by discussing two major new releases: the highly anticipated indie sequel **Hollow Knight: Silksong** and the AAA looter-shooter **Borderlands 4**. Jaime shares his enthusiastic impressions of **Silksong**, highlighting its six-year development history, its origins as an intended DLC for *Hollow Knight* that grew into a full standalone sequel, and its budget price point of $20. He praises its Metroidvania genre execution, comparing its difficulty to *Elden Ring*, noting the lack of a ramp-up for new players, and describing the protagonist Hornet's high mobility and fluid movement as a major gameplay addition. Tony offers his initial thoughts on **Borderlands 4**, which he picked up as a physical copy on launch day. He states that the game is **"very good"** and already **"easily" better than Borderlands 3**. Tony praises the narrative, specifically highlighting the **memorable NPC characters** and the investment in their stories, which he feels was lacking in the previous installment. The hosts note the interesting contrast between the highly-rated, budget indie title (**Silksong**) and the large-scale AAA release (**Borderlands 4**), setting up a future discussion comparing their reception and player count, especially on platforms like Steam.---## Show Notes**Podcast Title:** Good Game Radio**Topics:** Video Game Fall Season Kickoff, *Hollow Knight: Silksong* Release and Review, *Borderlands 4* Initial Impressions.###

It didn't take Team Cherry too long to announce a patch that'll weaken some of Hollow Knight: Silksong's early tough bosses. But is it really necessary? This week on the Option Select Podcast, it's all about Hollow Knight: Silksong—and why this masterpiece-in-the-making might be priced like a bargain bin game. We dive into why Team Cherry's low price point feels almost criminal for the amount of content and polish they're delivering. Is this generosity… or just bad business? Grab your lantern and follow us down the rabbit hole as we explore the value of one of the most anticipated indie games ever.
On this, the day of Silksong's release, it's time to go back to where it all began: Hollow Knight! Hello again, it's me, the Ostrich that Indieventure hires to write episode descriptions while Rebecca is away. Well, I say hire. Liam actually keeps me in a big glass cube in his garage, and whenever my services are required, he uses a large hammer to release me. The entire process is inefficient (and don't even get me started on how much he's spending on glass per financial quarter), but he has started patting me on the head and telling me how good I am at writing words, so who am I to complain? Much in the same way I am released from my prison in the event of an emergency, the Indieventure trio were forced to smash the proverbial glass that surrounds the listener mailbag format this week, following a last-minute embargo change to a game they were all planning on reviewing instead. That game was Demonschool, which was pushed back to November following the surprise announcement of the release date for Hollow Knight: Silksong. The episode begins with a brief discussion about Team Cherry's upcoming mega hit, especially how much it has disrupted the indie game release schedule. Is Silksong the indie equivalent of Grand Theft Auto 6? That's maybe a question they answer here. I can't remember. Maybe listen to the episode yourself instead of expecting me to do it? You fool. You oaf. Then, the trio answer YOUR questions! Who is the hottest Peggle character? What does a successful indie podcast look like? What are your earliest memories of gaming? You'll find out the answers to these (and more!) in this section. Finally, it's Hyperfixation time. Liam is channeling Big Dad Energy after watching The Naked Gun, Rebecca has been listening to The Lion's Roar by First Aid Kit, and Rachel has been playing The Drifter. Anyway, I'd best be off. A DPD van just delivered an enormous glass cube, and Liam is now standing outside of its door, tapping his watch and looking impatient. Speak soon! This week, the Guys take a long overdue return to the worlds of Dungeons and Dragons-not the recent movie or the old cartoon from the 80s, but the legendary role-playing game. With Jay out, Robbie and Art are joined by Art's older son, Will, to talk about the history and variants of the phenomenon that inspired the Satanic Panic. Will also shares how the role-playing aspect is something he'll be using as a therapist. Geeks of the week include Art's Krypto Current (must) See, Will's hopeful news on Team Cherry's video game, Silk Song, and Robbie's marking the end of an AOL era. Roll the polyhedral dice and listen to this one. It's got a very high baud rating.
