In this episode, local musicians Korum Bischoff of the Grammy-nominated band Recess Monkey and Leah Julius of Thunderpussy catch up on old times and new. These longtime friends deep dive into their personal histories. From Korum getting his first music gig playing the drum roll for BPA's groundbreaking event in 1992, to the moment they met when Leah began taking drum lessons from Korum at age 10, they'll cover how their lives (and the music that fills them) have progressed over the years. With the COVID-19 pandemic giving them both plenty of time to reflect on their relationships with music, they'll discuss how it's just as easy to lose touch with your creative outlet as it is to find a new one when the world turns upside down. Between Korum's new love for recording music at home and Leah's desire to go back to school to get a degree in public policy, both know they have a voice and are not afraid to use it. ABOUT KORUM Music has always been an important part of Korum's life. Some of his earliest memories were of hanging out in the studio, bashing on his dad’s drums and piano. He attended Edmonds Community College and became the drummer for their internationally recognized vocal jazz ensemble Soundsation. After a life-changing sailing adventure with his family, he returned to the Pacific Northwest and studied music at the UW and started teaching drums privately. After a break from gigging to raise two kids, he re-entered the music scene in a genre that worked perfectly for a parent of two small boys—as a drummer in the family music genre, first with The Johnny Bregar Band and then since 2012 with Recess Monkey. ABOUT LEAH Over more than a decade of writing, recording, and performing music, Seattle based musician, Leah Julius, has become a mainstay of the Pacific Northwest music community. She is a founding member and drummer of the band Sundries and bass player for the Seattle rock band, Thunderpussy. In addition to the achievements of her respective bands, Leah is also a member of the Pacific Northwest Chapter of the Recording Academy and has shared the stage and collaborated in the recording studio with some of the most accomplished musicians in the world including Mike McCready of Pearl Jam, Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, KT Tunstall, and Brandi Carlile.

Few in the children's music genre are more prolific than Seattle-based and Grammy-nominated kindie rockers Recess Monkey, who have released 13 albums in as many years. So who better to chat with about cranking out the hits than Drew Holloway, the monkey responsible for oh so many, many, many tunes! We chat process, using technology, collaboration within the band, and knowing when to invest in a song to completion and when to dump it. Also a brief side-chat with a common issue called "chasing the demo"! GET BACK HERE WITH MY DEMO SOUND!
My guest this week has been in my ears for almost the entirety of my time as a father, from the days of taking my older daughter for walks accompanied by the sub-genre he helped build, kindie music – that’s kid plus indie. Jack Forman is an educator, hailing from Seattle, born and raised. His work as an educator and entertainer of kids quickly evolved from formal teaching to family-friendly music with pals Drew Holloway and, later, Korum Bischoff. Together, the three of them comprise Recess Monkey. Recess Monkey has been around and hitting it hard for almost fifteen years. And when I say they hit it hard, I mean that in the band’s tenure thus far, they’ve released fourteen studio albums. Jack himself has released two in the last several years. Recess Monkey’s ponderous music catalogue is joy-filled, catchy, and at the same time relatable to current as well as former kids. While Jack plays bass and does vocals in Recess Monkey, he’s a talented multi-instrumentalist and audio engineer, producing his solo albums entirely from his home studio. Speaking of his home studio, you can also find Jack hosting a daily live call-in radio show on Sirius XM Kids Place Live called Live from the Monkey House. He brings the same level of energy, entertainment, and engagement to his radio show that you’d expect from hearing his music. #VerseShow comprises conversations that give voice to creators, their process, their struggles, and the celebrations of their work. It's an interview podcast with a bend toward curiosity about the creative process.
On this episode, Señor Fancypants and Lincoln talk about LEGO, video games, Kenya, and Elephants. This episode also features music from Dave and Brian, and Recess Monkey. Grammy nominees from the children’s music category in 2017 for a special concert held at Lucky Strike Live in Hollywood spoke with me about their work and what worked for them. We discussed their inspiration and tips for making it in the music business. One common theme was the importance of doing what is authentic to you and not doing what you think would work, just because it’s a formula. Almost all of the artists also discussed that they were musicians outside of children’s music first and found it easier to balance family life and music life when they switched to children’s music. Another theme that emerged was the importance of working away at your music career and basically doing the work both musically and on the business end. The nominees were Brady Rymer and The Little Band that Could, Frances England, Okee Dokee Brothers, Recess Monkey and Secret Agent 23 Skidoo. Go to www.tinyurl.com/GrammyKids for more information on the event.
