Like Father, Like Son 1 Kings 15 Chew the Bible Season 31 Kings 15 recounts the reigns of Abijam (Abijah) and Asa, kings of Judah, and briefly covers the kings of Israel during their times.​ Abijam ruled Judah for 3 years. He continued in the sins of his father Rehoboam and did not follow God wholeheartedly. But for the sake of David, God allowed Abijam's line to continue. There was constant war between Judah and Israel during his reign.​ Asa, Abijam's son, ruled Judah for 41 years and did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, unlike many kings before him. He removed idols, expelled male shrine prostitutes, and even removed his grandmother Maacah from being queen because she had made an obscene Asherah pole. However, he didn't remove all the high places.​ Asa also fought with Baasha, king of Israel. Baasha tried to block Judah, so Asa made an alliance with Ben-Hadad, king of Aram (Syria), by sending him treasures from the temple and palace. Ben-Hadad attacked Israel's cities, forcing Baasha to retreat.​ Meanwhile, in Israel, Nadab, the son of Jeroboam, ruled for 2 years but continued in his father's evil ways. He was assassinated by Baasha, who wiped out Jeroboam's entire family, just as the Lord had prophesied through Ahijah because of Jeroboam's sins.⸻Your words were found and I ate them

In this episode, we explore the explosive moment in Israel's history when the northern tribes, led by Jeroboam, revolt against Rehoboam, Solomon's son. At the heart of their complaint is a surprising indictment: Solomon's reign, for all its glory, left behind a legacy of unbearable burdens. This moment exposes the darker side of Solomon's leadership—one built on forced labor and heavy taxation—and sets the stage for a national rupture.We unpack Jeroboam's plea for relief and examine Rehoboam's disastrous decision to reject the wisdom of his father's older advisers—men who understood that a king's role was to serve the people. Instead, he listened to his privileged peers, young aristocrats far removed from the people's pain. The result? The kingdom fractures, fulfilling what the narrator of 1 Kings reveals as God's hidden hand at work—disciplining the house of David for their covenant unfaithfulness.But the story doesn't end there. We then turn to the words of Jesus in Matthew 11:28–30, where another King of Israel speaks—not to demand more, but to offer rest. Unlike Solomon and Rehoboam, Jesus invites the weary to come under his yoke—a yoke that is easy and a burden that is light. Isaac walks the same ground as Abraham, facing famine, fear, and foreign rulers. God confirms the promise given to Abraham, yet Isaac repeats old sins by misleading others about his wife.
