Music can carry powerful memories and emotions through generations, as Scott Durbin of the Imagination Movers shares with us.  Scott, whose grandmother was Native American, recalls participating in powwows at a very young age. His family's tribe would come together to honor their cultural traditions, and music with drumming and dancing was a central component. "I remember being very young, dressed in garb and doing a powwow, and as much as a six year old can intuit a spiritual elevation because of the music and the beat, I knew this was amazing." Through experiencing the resonating drum circles and participating in the spirituality of his ancestral heritage alongside his grandmother and family, he came to know the power of music early. Scott believes this may be his first clear memory of music unlocking a moment of revelation. Journey into the past with more music memories brought to you by Confetti Park.

We last saw him in “The Wedding Cottage” where he plays Brendan Penny's art dealer. John Kapelos plays Gus. He currently has over 200 acting credits. He has such a recognizable face and has been in so many things including “The Breakfast Club.” #JusticeforClooney - the sweet rescue dog Clooney was not credited on IMDb.  Who Are Tippi and Neal H. By the time of Beatles for Sale at the end of '64, the band were exhausted, overworked, and for good reason. They'd been working nonstop for YEARS with a schedule that most artists would shudder at. While their previous album had been their first of all originals, this time, the tank was a bit lower than before, and the band had to revert back to covers they'd been doing since the Cavern and Hamburg days. Even though they may have been tired, they pulled out a fiery cover of Little Richard's version of "Kansas City/Hey-Hey-Hey-Hey", which was in fact a medley of "Kansas City" and a song of his own. In 1959, at one point there were 5 different covers of "Kansas City" on the Billboard charts. The fabs manage to turn in one of the more energetic moments on Beatles For Sale here. Paul's Little Richard vocal tribute is always on point, Ringo gives a swinging backbeat. The gang vocals are 100% pure energy and fun, you can't not want to singalong. To me, this is a real highlight and a killer cover from the band. That said, I have a real sweet spot for Beatle covers. This isn't their best Little Richard cover though, and we won't get to that one for quite a while. Joining us this week is yet another member of the 5 timers club, our buddy and bandmate Kyle Melancon. Recorded on Toss Day 2020 (thanks, Ringo) we cast a wide net on Beatlechat, ranging from poorly-made Beatle albums, what makes their covers successful or unsuccessful), the long strange version of "Kansas City," that ol' N'awlins classic Jazzbolaya, and we introduce a new element to our show! #153 - Yellow Submarine with Scott Durbin and Kyle Melancon of Imagination Movers

Ranking The Beatles

It's hard to imagine any other band in history who could pull off recording an album that contains both a genre-defying acid journey like "Tomorrow Never Knows," and full-on children's song like "Yellow Submarine," but that's exactly what the Beatles pulled off on their 1966 album Revolver. In needing a customary Ringo track, Paul, with help from John (as well as Donovan), managed to come up with the perfect vehicle for Ringo's "jovial uncle" persona, while also creating a song that embodied the youthful side of psychedelia and at the same time, a vehicle for ongoing multi-generational fandom. "Yellow Submarine" envisions a utopia where we can all be happy and carefree, and that's one of the best things The Beatles have been able to provide in their legacy. Of course, it's also the springboard for the classic animated film and merchandise mega-product of same name. Joining us this week to talk what might be the ultimate pop children's song is Scott Durbin, progenitor and keyboardist for children' rock band Imagination Movers! Of course, it only seemed appropriate to also bring back the Movers' drummer, and friend of the pod, Kyle Melancon to join in. We talk about a number of topics, from the Movers' recent songwriting award nominations, their work on their Disney Channel show, what makes children's music work, coming to the Beatles late, merchandising, and much more! The morning of Oct 8, 1964, Paul came up with a song idea he was so excited about, he had the band work on it at their recording session that day. He saw it as a Little Richard-esque r&b rock tune, something they hadn't been able to write yet. The track, "She's A Woman," became the b-side for "I Feel Fine," but the band must've had a soft spot for it. It became a staple of their live show from the time of release until their final live tour date at Candlestick Park in 1966. It's certainly got some interesting elements to it, especially the intro and John's slashing guitar, but the rest of the song is maybe kind of lacking. John and Paul relished the chance to drop "turns me on," a drug reference, into a song for the first time, but how cool is it when it follows "My love don't buy me presents/I know that she's no peasant"? Returning to chat with us this week is our old pal and fellow Beatles uber nerd, Kyle Melancon, drummer for Disney's Imagination Movers, Louisiana Music Hall of Famers Dash Rip Rock, and Jonathan's bandmate in their 90s cover band supergroup, Big In The 90s. We touch on our relationship with Beatles b-sides and discovering the whole new world they contain, questionable live song choices, weird songs from Kyle's children's music band, and more! If you're into 90s music, check out Kyle and Jonathan's 90s cover band, Big In the 90s, and follow them on Facebook for livestream shows if you're not in the New Orleans area.  What do you think? There's an old joke...What was the last thing the drummer said before getting fired? "I've written a song..." Ringo first brought "Don't Pass Me By" to the Beatles when he joined the band in 1962. Not until the free-for-all spirit of The White Album in 1968 did the band agree to take up his jolly country tune, and when we say the band, we mean just Paul. Dueling sources place both Beatles behind the drum kit, strangely, and we're frankly not sure who it is because while it's messy enough to be Paul, it's weird and groovy enough to be Ringo . The song is filled with Sir Rich's trademark charm, and certainly adds to the sonic journey of the band's sole double album. Speaking of the band, The Band, it was their favorite track on the record, apparently. To discuss this track, we've brought back two of New Orleans' premier drummers...Kyle Melanon (Dash Rip Rock, Imagination Movers) who loves the track, and Andre Bohren (Johnny Sketch & The Dirty Notes) who does NOT. In our first in-person podcast, we discuss the pros and cons of being not quite professional, the difference singing versus being able to truly deliver a vocal, the weight of charm, and importance of letting your fiddle player tune up and make more than 1 pass on a track, while Julia drops a bomb that just may be the one overarching rule when it comes to The Beatles.... What do you think? Too high? To low? Just right? Buddy Holly was one of the biggest influence on the Beatles, particularly John and Paul. They covered at least 13 of his songs during their early days. He inspired them to be both singers AND songwriters. So it's kind of surprising they only released Buddy Holly cover. As much as I enjoy "Words of Love," it feels like it's never gotten above the "that's nice" level for me. It's a track that struggles to stand out in an album that struggles to standout amongst the best of the Fabs. It's not that I don't like, I just feel like I want something more. We're joined by our first return guest, drummer and certified Beatles nerd Kyle Melancon (seriously, he's such a nerd, he just bought an absolutely atrocious Magical Mystery Tour area rug, it's comically awful). We touch on all manner of subjects this week, like Buddy Holly's place in the rock and roll pantheon, the troubles with music biofilms, what publishing we'd own if we had "F&(k you" money, and we somehow manage to connect Buddy Holly, The Beatles, 311, and Weezer all in the same episode. We also question if it's maybe time to sweep ol Gary Busey and his teeth under the rug and revisit Buddy Holly on the big screen, and how does this song stack against other covers, including the shelved tour-de-force, "Leave My Kitten Alone"? Follow all of Kyle's adventures on Instagram at @yeskyle. He's the king of the selfie. He's also a prolific tweeter, @kyle_melancon. Welcome to Confetti Park,  a magical show featuring stories and music for children of all ages.  I’ve been gathering songs from across my home state of Louisiana and from places around the Mississippi Delta. I just love the variety or music—blues, jazz, country, rock n roll, rap and church music and Cajun, and brass band… there’s a lot to learn and I am still listening and learning every day. I hope you like what I share with you. This is a music medley of songs featured on the show this week. Arkansas Tongue Twister - Sunpie Barnes Joke of the Day: Grizzly Bear & Harp Salmon Song - Jazzy Ash Avocado Woo Woo - Tin Men Daycare - Ph Fred Days of the Week - Jason & Layla Louis Ray - ABCs Five Little Butterflies - Johnette Downing Curious George Main Theme Song -  Dr. John We’ve Got Each Other -  Imagination Movers We begin with a game song from Arkansas, by Arkansas born New Orleans resident Bruce Sunpie Barnes. He is a real forest ranger, and a great musician. You will also hear the wonderful Tin Men of New Orleans, L.A. based Jazzy Ash (who has deep Louisiana roots), and Louisiana pied piper Johnette Downing. There is also a famous song by the famous Dr. John, all  about the most famous monkey in the world. And I know you will enjoy brother and sister duo Jason & Layla, who are wonderful artists on their own, and together. (Jason Rhein plays music in Rotary Downs and is one of the owners of Marigny Recording Studio. Layla is a professional belly dancer in NYC. They are originally from Baton Rouge.) And we have a terrific parody song by Ph Fred... "They tried to make me go to daycare, I said 'No, No, No!'"  We end with a song by the Imagination Movers all about a hurricane evacuation. These are the times when you realize what are truly the most important things in life... HINT: it's not houses nor possessions. The guys know what's up in "We've Got Each Other." This song leads us into our storytime feature, Fairweather Friend, by New Orleans poet and storyteller Marcus Page. It is the story of young friends separated because of a hurricane evacuation. You can listen to all the stories you hear on this radio show on our free Confetti Park podcast. The Confetti Park radio show and podcast is supported by the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation and Music Rising at Tulane University. Thanks for listening. Remember to look for the magic in every day!

When you had a vasectomy at age 30 via a doctor who apparently decided it wasn t a moment too soon to remove you from the gene pool , then fall in love with a woman who s determined to have a baby, the solution is obvious a sperm donation from your gay best friend and shared parenthood with donor dad and his partner. Andy Overslaugh tells Happy Hour about son WIlder s three dads, Wilder s mom Lori and her Leap Day proposal, and their surprisingly unsurprising, unconventional family. Although he says he s best known as Lori Tipton s fianc , Andy is what Happy Hour guest host Rich Collins calls a "five in one" threat. What else do you call a 20 year bartender whose incarnations include indie professional wrestler, Katrina race car driver, standup bass smashing leader of a 90s rockabilly band, and one of Wilder s dads Don t miss his tip for men who want to hang out at Victoria s Secret without creeping out the clientele. Andy s most vivid stories describe the wild world of professional wrestling, complete with hidden razors, gushing blood and a nemesis called Dick Nasty, so you might be surprised to know he s a big fan of Renaissance festival jousting. Speaking of which, Happy Hour favorite George Elizondo recounts the time he played at a Renaissance festival...with a Motown band...to an audience of no one. At least he got to eat a big turkey leg when it was over. George s copy music for the sponsorship announcements chills out the house. When she realizes a missing guest has resulted in a show reeking of testosterone, Happy Hour producer Graham da Ponte steps in to provide some estrogen...and is promptly reduced to tears by Rich s devastating song about New Orleans s mean streets. Finally, Andrew Duhon makes his last Happy Hour appearance of the month before heading for an east coast tour find his dates for a club near you at AndrewDuhon.com. Rich Collins of the Imagination Movers, guest hosting for Grant, keeps things moving with some stories of his own including the tender tale of a 10 year underpants ritual and some seriously grownup music. It's a childhood music memory from Rich Collins, a founder and front man for one of the most popular children's music groups in the world, the Imagination Movers. Rich also has a burgeoning solo career, with a new album of songs geared toward adults.   In this music memory, Rich talks about the music he associates with large family gatherings at Thanksgiving: “My family up in DC was large and we would all gather for all the major holidays, and the holiday that was at our house every year was Thanksgiving. And we had a very fun family, so basically the way every one of these gatherings ended was with all the tables and chairs being pushed aside, and we would put on records and start dancing.” Rich talks about how his father curated the albums that became the basis for Thanksgiving memories: “The soundtrack to my youth, and to these parties, and to these great family memories, was the Beatles, Creedence, and Otis Redding.” Today, the tradition lives on for Rich and his family. "Every other year here in New Orleans (where I’ve been for 25 years), I host Thanksgiving. And I have a Pandora channel with those three artists on it and I put it on and it’s playing the whole time that I’m gathered with my sisters and my mom and the next generation…” Thanks, Rich, for sharing this wonderful family tradition with Confetti Park. Listen to this extended interview with Rich Collins, all about the music of the Imagination Movers.

If we ever get to Mars, man s journey will begin in New Orleans East. Cindy Manto s fascinating new book, imaginatively titled Michoud Assembly Facility, tells the story of the piece of dirt off of the I 10 that started off as a land grant from Louis XV of France. In the 1940 s Michoud was the site of the world s largest factory, building planes, then tanks, then in the 70 s they started building a whole different kind of tank the external tank for NASA s space shuttle and today the Michoud Assembly Facility is building the MPCV Multi Purpose Crew Vehicle that will take us to Mars. Is there Mozarella on Mars If Chef Kevin White goes up in Cindy s MPCV there will be Chef Kevin makes his own every day at Wayfare, and drizzles home made blood orange oil over it. Like Cindy, Michael Harold is writing about whole other worlds. Having recently turned his back on 23 years of wrestling Mesolthelioma victims as an asbestos attorney, Michael is, among other pursuits, a columnist for recently launched Inside New Orleans magazine where he is chornicling the doings of the rich and nefarious. Now that Michael has no schedule he doesn t need to get changed out of his running shorts or show up any place on time. Rich Collins is resurrecting his smash hit Disney TV series Imagination Movers as an animated series in which the Movers develop super powers. On this show we get to help Rich write the new theme tune to the show, and preview a slice of the other side of Rich s life, a cut from his upcoming solo record "A Particular Set of Skills."
