Business in the Bible!  During our prayer meeting in September, one topic that came up was the significance of the marketplace or the workplace in the Bible. Scott mentioned that during one of his spiritual retreats, he sought clarity on whether there was legitimacy in a calling in the marketplace. He was led to various passages in the Bible, including Exodus, where Moses commissioned Bezalel to fabricate items for the tabernacle. This was the first recorded instance in Scripture of a person being filled with the Holy Spirit, and it highlighted the importance of craftsmanship and work.Scott also delved into the Hebrew word "avodah," which is used interchangeably in the Old Testament for work, worship, and service. This reveals that our work can be an act of worship unto the Lord. Worship isn't limited to church services; it extends to our daily vocations, whether we're craftsmen, accountants, salespeople, leaders, marketers, or any other profession. All of these can be done unto the Lord as an act of worship.Scott then shared other key references from the New Testament, such as Jesus' first recorded words about being about His Father's business and the story of Stephen, the first martyr, who was appointed over a business-related task. These examples validate the legitimacy of a calling in the workplace.Business Insights: Another important topic discussed during our prayer meeting was the concept of rest. Scott mentioned a book by Andy Mason titled "God with You at Work," which emphasized the performance of rest. The idea is to cease from striving and selfish ambition, entering God's rest even while working. This type of rest leads to increased creativity, reduced conflict, and less anxiety.10 Day Retreat: Scott also touched upon his recent 10-day spiritual retreat. He shared that the first revelation was about returning to our first love, based on Revelation 2:4. The Church of Ephesus had done many good things, but had lost its first love for Christ. This highlights the importance of maintaining intimacy with Jesus as a hallmark of our faith.Additionally, Scott discussed the concept of the "fifth column" that he learned about during his retreat. In history, a fifth column referred to infiltrators sympathetic to a cause who were inside a city or organization. Scott related this to the church, suggesting that we should be mindful of what has infiltrated the church, especially in turbulent times. In 2010, Adam Lowe was not happy about how he looked or felt. Adam was an extremely active kid in high school, playing soccer, lacrosse, & basketball, and wanted to get back in shape—so he turned to running. His sister had run the Marine Corps Marathon, inspiring him to sign up and give it a try. Adam ran his first 10K in 48:07 so he could register for his first Marine Corps Marathon and ran a 3:58 in his debut. Immediately after, he swore—while lying on the ground, praying to die—that he would never run again. Fast forward to 2021, running the JFK 50 Mile, Adam came off the AT (Appalachian Trail) in 64th place and proceeded to rock a 3:13 marathon split on the C&O Canal, and continued closing hard over the last 8.5 miles on the road to finish 21st overall and leading his CVAC Team to their 2nd consecutive 1st place finish! Adam finished in 6:38:19, a 17-minute PR at JFK (2020, 6:55:29) and it was his 2nd straight year being 21st overall. What a journey! Adam went from feeling self-conscious about his weight, appearance, what to wear, and having no clue how to train or fuel his runs. Now he's deeply involved in the running community as a race director of the Fire On The Mountain 50K, and started a running club for 3rd-5th graders at his elementary school, encouraging them to join and get active. Adam has big gratitude for Andy Mason writing an article about him in the Herald-Mail about a 70M run he did during Covid that led Mike Spinnler (the JFK50 Race Director) to ask him to run for his CVAC team. Mike believing in Adam was a big turning point. The unwavering support and partnership with his fiancée, Katie, crewing Adam for races, working together race directing, and raising their kids as a team has made all the difference. After more than ten years being based in Redding, CA, Heaven in Business is expanding to the East Coast of USA. This will involve my family moving to Pennsylvania in June, 2022, adding proximity to New York, Philadelphia and Washington DC.... and direct flights to most of the United States! In this podcast I unpack this (surprise) direction for us, how we heard from God, how we translated this to practical action and are navigating the stakeholders in the process.  This is a strategic move in line with much prayer and prophetic input that has become clear over the last 12 months. Heaven in Business remains in strong relationship with Bethel Church leadership as we continue to advance the vision that Bill Johnson and Kris Vallotton have stewarded for over three decades. Part of the Heaven in Business team (Michelle Raftery) will remain in Redding and we have ongoing events planned in Redding, both in 2022 and beyond.  Overall, Heaven in Business will continue to connect, train and activate people to partner with God at work and engage in the wellbeing of cities. The existing conferences, retreats and membership community will continue while we also seek to further refine how to disciple people who are discipling cities. Regardless of where you call on this scale, and what your “business problems” might be, you’ll find some encouragement here. SPIRITUAL FOUNDATIONS First - a caution. Don’t kill yourself making a killing. You’re not in competition with ANYONE. You’re not “behind”. Grace Over Grind, my friends, in the words of Shae Bynes. Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Andy Mason is the director of Heaven in Business at Bethel Church. Before coming to Redding in 2008, Andy worked for the leading New Zealand Agricultural Bank and a national consultancy firm. His primary role was in helping clients define what success was to them, then partnering with them in developing strategic plans towards realizing that success. Andy invested his vacation time in international community development, having helped establish a microfinance project and orphan program and developed leaders in eastern Uganda. Andy lives in Redding with his wife, Janine, and their four children. At the core of every endeavor are the questions, “Who am I and what has God made me to be? What does that look like and where am I headed?”   Andy currently works with people who love business and love God in Heaven in Business.   The idea that business and religion have to be separate can be traced back to the Garden of Eden. Andy finds personal inspiration in the story of Moses in Exodus 33, where the focus for Moses was on peace and rest. In today's busy world, peace and rest are hard to find. Andy turns to Ps. 46:10! The biggest challenge for Andy is to let everything he does come out of the overflow from his relationship with God, anchored in unwavering rest and confidence. Of the Seven Cultural Mountains, Andy's primary focus is on business and religion. Andy's defining moment was in 2008 in leaving New Zealand and moving to CA. He shares how God providentially bolstered his faith to make the move. Andy has felt the sting of failure through insecurity, in not knowing who he was. He knows the fear of people and of what they might say. Andy says he spent too much time living someone else's expectation rather than trusting who God made him to be. The gift from his failure has been in finding who God wants him to be! Andy shares a favorite quote from Teddy Roosevelt in 1910: The Man in the Arena.   Let's Get Real Round Questions:   What is your biggest strength? Dave Ramsey's podcast, EntreLeadership and iBethel.tv for worship music What would you say to the “younger” you? “I would go back to age 16-18 when I heard God for the first time. It's when the faith of my parents became MY faith. I would say, ‘You are on the perfect track to prepare you for what God has for you. God's in your future; just stay close to Him and you'll get there, too'.” What parting advice do you have for our listeners? “Success is not a destination, but the journey.
