How would you cope with a death threat on your family? And as a consequence you might move houses, careers and even countries to find safety. As Kenny did. And yet safety is also an internal emotional feeling that has to be witnessed, held and expressed to make sense and find a home.Kenny Mammarella D-Cruz returns to the Soulhubbers Podcast, this time with Carmen Rendell to share his personal journey of escaping to refugee camps in Italy and the UK, away from Idi Amin's dictatorship of Uganda and finally to the remote Welsh town of Fishguard. He talks into how, as a 60 year old, the stories he puts to feelings still spook him. How he falls apart and comes together again and again. He shares intimate details of how he's finding tools through his life, such as breathing and deeper self understanding to let go of his unhealthy mental and physical coping mechanisms. We talk about suicide, feeling feelings and trauma, and how he gets to his golden shadow, via the dark shadow.Kenny very much follows in the community sharing as his father did when he first arrived in the UK.He brought hockey here, he took it to school, so now it's a big deal in the area. He used to play hockey for Uganda. He started the Friendship Circle for older and lonely people. I think that was 30 years ago. He started a charity. He started and was the first Goan Mayor in the UK, and in the year, the bicentenary of the last invasion of Britain, which was our town. It's a beautifully insightful sharing of how ‘doing the work' can change you and enables you to go on to work and support others go through their life challenges, trauma and dark nights of the soul. Click here to find out more about MenSpeak and AllGenderSpeak Groups that Kenny and other trained facilitator's hold over Christmas period and throughout the year. They're held online on a daily basis including Christmas Day and New Years Day.Please share this episode with others who you know might benefit or simply enjoy hearing real life stories and how we find our way through challenging times. Friendship Circle is so much more than the child with Special Needs. In this talk with Berel and Chani Majesky, we found out just how much more. For 13 years, the Majeskys have been serving as directors of Friendship Circle of Brooklyn, and while, in their words, our community has come a long way, there is still much to be done.
One of our founding agents at Compass Miami, Levi Meyer, is back on the pod to give us the latest on the Miami market, updates on developments in Brickell, and new HOA and Condominium Board regulations. A few fun facts about Levi: He's a fifth-generation Floridian and a longtime Coral Gables resident. He's one of 9 siblings, an Israeli military vet, and he grew up attending Rabbinate school. Before he was selling Miami's most prestigious homes, Levi was in the business of selling arms and ammunition (yes, you read that right). Levi is also deeply involved in his community. He serves on the boards of several charities, including United Hatzalah and The Friendship Circle of Greater Miami, and he's the President and Chairman of the Chabad of Coconut Grove. He lives in Coral Gables with his amazing wife Lauren and their two beautiful kids, Benjamin and Charlotte. While Levi's real estate achievements are impressive—he's ranked in the top 1% in our industry—what's even more special is our friendship. He's one of my oldest friends at Compass, he officiated my wedding, and I'm lucky to have a guy like Levi in my life. In our ninth episode, we interview senior shluchim and baalei teshuva Rabbi Menachem and Mrs. Chava Schmidt about how they have integrated their musical and artistic backgrounds and talents into their spiritual leadership in Philadelphia. We learn about how "the Rebbe made hasidim," changing the Anash community's perspective toward baalei teshuva and the world more broadly, and how we can remain connected and inspired post-Gimmel Tammuz by reaching out to help one another in times of need. The Schmidts then share their wisdom and experience on how baalei teshuva must remain connected to their past while raising their own families and participating in our generation's task of bringing Moshiach. Finally, we hear what it was like for the Schmidts to raise three children with special needs before the emergence of Friendship Circle and other support programs. Join us on a heartwarming journey as we dive into the inspiring story of Camp Kum-Ba-Yah, a beacon of inclusivity and friendship. In this episode, we had the pleasure of sitting down with Executive Director Amy and Programs Director Julie, who shared the rich history and enduring values of this extraordinary camp.Step back in time to 1961 when Camp Kum-Ba-Yah came into existence, founded by Bev Cosby, a visionary Caucasian pastor with a deep commitment to social justice. Faced with the challenges of desegregation in Lynchburg, Virginia, Bev took a courageous step forward. When city pools remained closed to prevent integration, he opened the doors of Camp Kum-Ba-Yah to children of all backgrounds, becoming one of the first desegregated locations in the state.Today, Camp Kum-Ba-Yah stands tall, upholding Bev's legacy of inclusivity, diversity, and access for every child. Amy and Julie revealed fascinating insights about the camp's activities and programs, highlighting the beloved Friendship Circle as a shining example. This powerful tradition, initiated by Bev himself, brings everyone together, joining hands and voices in harmonious unity—a cherished symbol of Camp Kum-Ba-Yah's core values. As Amy eloquently expressed, the camp holds a timeless essence—an inviting sanctuary where campers and staff can connect, surrounded by a shared love for the camp experience. It's evident that Camp Kum-Ba-Yah's passion is unwavering, and we feel privileged to have had them on our podcast. If you'd like to support Camp Kum-Ba-Yah and contribute to their mission of empowering campers and families year-round, visit their website at https://www.campkumbayah.org/ and make a donation today.Don't forget to explore more captivating episodes of our "My Camp" series and discover additional camp-related content on the Happy Camper Live website. Meet Racheli. This nonprofit marketer has the grassroots playbook to transform your nonprofit marketing. She left her dream job to work with Friendship Circle, a nonprofit creating friendship and inclusion for individuals with special needs. There, she noticed how too often marketers are looking backward or side-to-side to other orgs instead of looking within. Now she supports nonprofits as they create marketing that attracts believers to their missions.
