Trong bối cảnh nhiều quốc gia đang siết chặt việc trẻ vị thành niên sử dụng mạng xã hội và thiết bị số, tại Hàn Quốc, vấn đề quản lý điện thoại thông minh của trẻ em cũng đang trở thành một chủ đề xã hội được quan tâm mạnh mẽ. Một khảo sát gần đây cho thấy phần lớn phụ huynh Hàn Quốc không còn xem smartphone đơn thuần là công cụ tiện lợi, mà là thiết bị cần được kiểm soát chặt chẽ trong quá trình nuôi dạy trẻ. Theo kết quả khảo sát do nghị sĩ Kim Young-ho, chủ tịch Ủy ban Giáo dục Quốc Hội Hàn Quốc, thực hiện với hơn 52.000 phụ huynh có con đang học tiểu học, trung học cơ sở và trung học phổ thông tại Seoul, Incheon và tỉnh Gyeongnam, có tới 98,1% người tham gia cho rằng “cần có mức hạn chế nhất định đối với việc sử dụng điện thoại thông minh của trẻ vị thành niên”. Những lo ngại của phụ huynh tập trung vào nhiều khía cạnh. Có 97,5% cho rằng smartphone làm tăng nguy cơ trẻ tiếp xúc với nội dung độc hại hoặc thông tin không phù hợp; 96% nhận định thiết bị này có thể cản trở sự tập trung trong học tập; 93,9% cho rằng trẻ khó tự kiểm soát thời gian sử dụng; và 90,4% cho biết việc dùng điện thoại cũng có thể trở thành nguyên nhân gây mâu thuẫn trong gia đình. Nghịch lý smartphone của các gia đình Điều đáng chú ý là dù nhận thức rõ các nguy cơ, nhiều phụ huynh vẫn cho con tiếp xúc với điện thoại từ rất sớm. Theo khảo sát năm 2023 của Quỹ Báo chí Hàn Quốc, 29,9% trẻ em Hàn Quốc đã sử dụng smartphone lần đầu trước 24 tháng tuổi, còn tỷ lệ tiếp xúc trước 5 tuổi lên tới 71,5%. Về thời điểm sở hữu điện thoại cá nhân, 15,9% trẻ có điện thoại trước khi vào tiểu học và 44,3% có điện thoại khi học lớp 1 hoặc lớp 2. Thực tế này phản ánh một nghịch lý trong các gia đình hiện đại: cha mẹ lo ngại tác hại của smartphone nhưng vẫn khó từ chối thiết bị này vì nhu cầu liên lạc, an toàn, học tập và sinh hoạt hằng ngày của con. Nghị sĩ Kim Young-ho cho rằng kết quả khảo sát cho thấy rõ tình thế khó xử của phụ huynh. Họ hiểu điện thoại thông minh có thể gây rủi ro, nhưng vẫn buộc phải trao cho con vì lý do an toàn và đời sống học đường. Từ thực tế đó, ông Kim đề xuất phổ biến một thiết bị thay thế gọi là “Edu Ansim Phone” – điện thoại an toàn dành cho học sinh. Thiết bị này sẽ duy trì các chức năng cần thiết như nghe gọi, định vị, ứng dụng an toàn, đồng thời hạn chế các tính năng có nguy cơ gây nghiện hoặc tiềm ẩn rủi ro cao như video ngắn, mạng xã hội, trò chơi trực tuyến và trò chuyện ẩn danh. Theo ông Kim, việc phát triển thiết bị thay thế không chỉ nhằm đáp ứng nhu cầu liên lạc giữa cha mẹ và con cái, mà còn tạo ra một lựa chọn trung gian giữa “cấm hoàn toàn” và “cho trẻ dùng smartphone đầy đủ chức năng”. Đây có thể là hướng đi giúp phụ huynh bảo vệ con khỏi nội dung độc hại, giảm nguy cơ lệ thuộc vào thiết bị số, nhưng vẫn bảo đảm yếu tố an toàn trong sinh hoạt hằng ngày. Trẻ nhỏ cần được bảo vệ đặc biệt trước màn hình  Các chuyên gia cho rằng việc quản lý smartphone không thể chỉ dừng ở việc thay đổi thiết bị, mà cần bắt đầu từ nhận thức đúng về quá trình phát triển của trẻ. Theo Ủy ban Phát triển thuộc Hội Nhi khoa và Thanh thiếu niên Hàn Quốc, việc cho trẻ tiếp xúc với điện thoại thông minh, máy tính bảng hoặc TV từ quá sớm là xu hướng đáng lo ngại. Giai đoạn đầu đời là thời kỳ trẻ cần tương tác trực tiếp với con người, đồ vật thật và môi trường xung quanh, thay vì tiếp nhận các kích thích một chiều từ màn hình. Trẻ nhỏ dễ bị smartphone thu hút bởi hình ảnh chuyển động nhanh, màu sắc rực rỡ, âm thanh liên tục và các nhân vật bắt mắt. Những kích thích mạnh này khiến trẻ nhanh chóng bị cuốn vào màn hình, đồng thời dần cảm thấy các hoạt động thông thường như đọc sách, chơi đồ chơi, vận động, quan sát thiên nhiên hoặc trò chuyện với cha mẹ trở nên kém hấp dẫn hơn. Khi não bộ quen với nhịp kích thích nhanh và mạnh, trẻ cũng có thể khó thích nghi với các hoạt động cần sự kiên nhẫn, tập trung và suy nghĩ chậm. Vấn đề lớn nhất là màn hình thường chỉ tạo ra trải nghiệm một chiều. Trong khi não bộ của trẻ cần được phát triển thông qua các tương tác đa giác quan như nhìn, nghe, chạm, vận động, phản hồi cảm xúc và giao tiếp qua lại, smartphone lại giới hạn trải nghiệm trong hình ảnh và âm thanh trên mặt phẳng hai chiều. Điều này có thể ảnh hưởng đến khả năng tự kiểm soát cảm xúc, hành vi, sự tập trung, trí tưởng tượng, ngôn ngữ và kỹ năng xã hội của trẻ. Đặc biệt, trẻ nhỏ vốn chưa hoàn thiện năng lực chờ đợi, kiềm chế ham muốn hay chuyển từ hoạt động này sang hoạt động khác. Nếu thường xuyên tiếp xúc với thiết bị số, trẻ có thể dễ cáu gắt, phản ứng mạnh khi bị yêu cầu dừng xem, khó tập trung vào các hoạt động chậm hơn và phụ thuộc vào màn hình để giải tỏa cảm xúc. Thiết bị di động cũng có thể làm giảm chất lượng gắn bó giữa cha mẹ và con cái. Trẻ nhỏ, nhất là trẻ dưới 3 tuổi, cần được cha mẹ nhìn, nghe, ôm ấp, đáp lại cảm xúc và cùng tham gia các hoạt động thường ngày. Nếu thời gian này bị thay thế bằng màn hình, hoặc nếu cha mẹ thường xuyên dùng điện thoại khi ở bên con, sự tương tác trực tiếp trong gia đình sẽ bị suy giảm. Trong khi đó, mối gắn bó an toàn với cha mẹ là nền tảng quan trọng giúp trẻ ổn định cảm xúc, tự tin khám phá thế giới và phát triển quan hệ xã hội sau này. Tác động tới ngôn ngữ cũng là điểm cần lưu ý. Trẻ học nói hiệu quả nhất thông qua giao tiếp hai chiều: cha mẹ nói chuyện, trẻ phản ứng, người lớn đáp lại và tiếp tục mở rộng cuộc trò chuyện. Smartphone hoặc TV không thể thay thế quá trình này. Vì vậy, hạn chế smartphone ở trẻ nhỏ không chỉ là giảm thời gian giải trí, mà còn là biện pháp bảo vệ sự phát triển não bộ, cảm xúc, ngôn ngữ, khả năng tập trung và kỹ năng xã hội. Trong những năm đầu đời, điều trẻ cần nhất không phải là làm quen sớm với màn hình, mà là được chơi, được chạm, được vận động, được trò chuyện và được kết nối trực tiếp với cha mẹ cũng như thế giới thật xung quanh. Vì sao cần can thiệp sớm? Các chuyên gia Hàn Quốc đặc biệt nhấn mạnh lợi ích của can thiệp sớm. Nếu cha mẹ chỉ bắt đầu hạn chế khi trẻ đã hình thành thói quen phụ thuộc vào điện thoại, quá trình điều chỉnh sẽ khó khăn hơn và dễ dẫn đến xung đột trong gia đình. Ngược lại, nếu quy tắc được đặt ra từ khi trẻ còn nhỏ, trẻ sẽ dễ tiếp nhận hơn, ít phản kháng hơn và có cơ hội hình thành thói quen sinh hoạt lành mạnh trước khi bước vào độ tuổi đi học. Can thiệp sớm không chỉ nhằm giảm thời gian nhìn màn hình, mà còn bảo vệ những giai đoạn phát triển quan trọng của não bộ, cảm xúc và quan hệ xã hội. Khi trẻ có thêm thời gian đọc truyện tranh, vận động ngoài trời, chơi trò chơi cảm giác, khám phá thiên nhiên, học nhạc, vẽ tranh hoặc chơi thể thao, trẻ sẽ có nhiều nguồn kích thích lành mạnh hơn, thay vì chỉ tìm kiếm sự thỏa mãn từ thiết bị số. Nói cách khác, quản lý smartphone ở trẻ nhỏ không nên được hiểu đơn giản là cấm đoán, mà là một hình thức can thiệp sớm nhằm giúp trẻ phát triển khả năng tập trung, tự điều chỉnh cảm xúc, giao tiếp xã hội và xây dựng thói quen sống cân bằng. Không chỉ cấm, mà phải giúp trẻ học cách tự kiểm soát Ở góc độ sức khỏe tâm thần trẻ em, Giáo sư Lee Young-sik, Khoa Tâm thần học, Bệnh viện Đại học Chung-Ang, cho rằng không thể đánh giá tình trạng “nghiện smartphone” chỉ bằng số giờ sử dụng mỗi ngày. Điều quan trọng hơn là trẻ có còn khả năng tự kiểm soát ham muốn sử dụng thiết bị hay không. Vì vậy, giải pháp không nên chỉ là cấm tuyệt đối, mà cần giúp trẻ hình thành năng lực tự điều chỉnh và tự kiềm chế. Theo Giáo sư Lee, bước đầu tiên trong quản lý smartphone là khôi phục và củng cố quan hệ gia đình. Khi cha mẹ và con cái có đủ thời gian giao tiếp tích cực, trẻ cảm nhận được sự quan tâm thay vì chỉ bị kiểm soát. Khi đó, các giới hạn về sử dụng smartphone sẽ dễ được chấp nhận hơn. Ngược lại, nếu gia đình vốn đã nhiều xung đột, việc tịch thu hoặc cấm đoán điện thoại có thể khiến trẻ phản kháng mạnh hơn, thậm chí lén lút sử dụng thiết bị nhiều hơn. Vì vậy, việc giảm phụ thuộc smartphone cần được tiến hành bằng sự đồng hành, quy tắc rõ ràng và mối quan hệ gia đình tích cực. Giáo sư Lee khuyến nghị gia đình nên đặt smartphone ở không gian chung như phòng khách, tránh để trẻ sử dụng một mình trong phòng ngủ hoặc phòng học. Phòng ngủ nên được hiểu là nơi nghỉ ngơi, còn phòng học là nơi tập trung học tập, không phải không gian để trẻ cô lập bản thân và sử dụng điện thoại không giới hạn. Trong bữa ăn gia đình, tất cả thành viên, kể cả cha mẹ, cũng nên cùng nhau không sử dụng smartphone. Đối với học sinh, việc chia thời gian sử dụng thành các khung cụ thể, chẳng hạn sau khi tan học hoặc sau bữa tối, có thể giúp trẻ dễ kiểm soát hơn so với cách nói chung chung rằng “mỗi ngày được dùng 1–2 giờ”. Cha mẹ cũng có thể khuyến khích trẻ tự ghi nhật ký sử dụng smartphone để nhận thức rõ mình đang dùng thiết bị vào lúc nào, trong bao lâu và vì mục đích gì. Một điểm quan trọng khác là không nên dùng smartphone như phần thưởng để đổi lấy hành vi ngoan ngoãn. Nếu trẻ luôn được thưởng bằng điện thoại sau khi ăn, học bài hoặc nghe lời, thiết bị số sẽ trở thành nguồn thỏa mãn đặc biệt, khiến trẻ càng khó tách khỏi smartphone.  Khuyến nghị từ chuyên gia tâm thần nhi khoa Ở nhóm trẻ nhỏ, các chuyên gia tâm thần nhi khoa Hàn Quốc cho rằng việc quản lý thiết bị số cần được thực hiện đặc biệt thận trọng. Bác sĩ Park So-young, giám đốc Phòng khám Tâm thần Sức khỏe Moa, nhấn mạnh rằng trong giai đoạn não bộ đang phát triển, trẻ cần được tương tác trực tiếp với con người thật càng nhiều càng tốt. Vì vậy, việc tiếp xúc với video, YouTube, trò chơi, hay các nội dung số nên được hạn chế tối đa. Theo bác sĩ Park, hình ảnh trẻ xem hoạt hình khi ăn ở nhà hàng, xem YouTube khi ngồi ô tô hoặc dùng máy tính bảng để học tiếng Anh tại nhà đã trở nên rất phổ biến. Tuy nhiên, nếu trẻ khóc lóc, ăn vạ khi không được xem, hoặc không thể ăn uống, ra ngoài, sinh hoạt bình thường nếu thiếu điện thoại, cha mẹ cần xem đây là tín hiệu cảnh báo. Dù trẻ nhỏ chưa có tiêu chuẩn chẩn đoán chính thức về “nghiện smartphone”, các biểu hiện như phải xem lâu hơn mới thỏa mãn, phản ứng dữ dội khi bị tắt màn hình, hoặc phụ thuộc vào video trong mọi sinh hoạt cho thấy gia đình cần kiểm tra lại môi trường nuôi dạy và cân nhắc tư vấn chuyên gia. Bác sĩ Park cũng dẫn khuyến nghị của Tổ chức Y tế Thế giới rằng trẻ dưới 24 tháng tuổi không nên tiếp xúc với màn hình; trẻ từ 2 đến 5 tuổi chỉ nên xem trong vòng 1 giờ mỗi ngày và cần có sự tham gia của người chăm sóc. Trước 6 tuổi là giai đoạn não bộ phát triển rất nhanh, trong đó những trải nghiệm hằng ngày có thể ảnh hưởng sâu sắc đến khả năng tập trung, ngôn ngữ, tự kiểm soát và phát triển xã hội của trẻ. Nếu trẻ tiếp xúc quá nhiều với các kích thích nhanh, ngắn và lặp lại từ smartphone, não bộ sẽ thiếu cơ hội phát triển cân bằng thông qua vận động, chơi tự do, tương tác với cha mẹ và trải nghiệm đời sống thật. Một điểm quan trọng khác là không nên gắn video với các sinh hoạt cố định như ăn uống, đi ra ngoài hoặc ngồi yên. Nếu mỗi bữa ăn trẻ đều được xem điện thoại, não trẻ có thể học theo mô hình “ăn cơm là phải có video”, từ đó từ chối ăn nếu không được xem. Vì vậy, việc sử dụng thiết bị số nên được đặt vào một khung giờ cố định, có giới hạn rõ ràng, thay vì dùng như công cụ để trẻ ăn ngoan, ngồi yên hoặc ngừng quấy khóc. Về nội dung, phụ huynh nên tránh các video có chuyển cảnh quá nhanh, màu sắc quá mạnh, âm thanh dồn dập hoặc tính năng tự động phát liên tục như YouTube Shorts, Reels và các video đề xuất tự động. Ngay cả với nội dung học tập như học chữ, học tiếng Anh hay bảng cửu chương, bác sĩ Park cho rằng không nên xem đó là giải pháp thay thế tương tác trực tiếp. Nếu sử dụng, cha mẹ nên cho trẻ xem trong thời gian ngắn, sau đó cùng trẻ nhắc lại, đặt câu hỏi và giúp trẻ dùng lại thông tin vừa học trong tình huống thực tế. Quan trọng hơn cả, cha mẹ cần duy trì quy tắc một cách nhất quán. Với trẻ nhỏ, người lớn phải quyết định loại thiết bị, thời gian, địa điểm và nội dung được xem. Khi trẻ lớn hơn, gia đình có thể cùng trẻ thảo luận để xây dựng quy tắc. Nếu cha mẹ thay đổi quy định tùy theo tâm trạng, trẻ sẽ khó hình thành thói quen tự kiểm soát. Bản thân cha mẹ cũng cần làm gương bằng cách giảm sử dụng điện thoại trước mặt con, thiết lập các khu vực không thiết bị như bàn ăn, phòng ngủ, khu vui chơi và giải thích rõ mục đích khi cần dùng điện thoại. Nhìn từ góc độ này, hạn chế thiết bị di động ở trẻ nhỏ không chỉ là kiểm soát thời gian xem màn hình, mà là quá trình xây dựng lại nhịp sinh hoạt lành mạnh. Khi giấc ngủ, bữa ăn, vui chơi, vận động, trò chuyện và tương tác với cha mẹ trở thành trung tâm của đời sống hằng ngày, sự phụ thuộc vào điện thoại sẽ giảm đi một cách tự nhiên hơn. Cha mẹ phải làm gương trước khi yêu cầu con thay đổi Từ góc nhìn giáo dục gia đình, chương trình “Family Day” của Samsung Electronics DS cũng từng đề cập đến vấn đề “cuộc chiến smartphone với con cái”. Trong buổi chuyên đề này, tiến sĩ tâm lý học Lee Hyeong-cho nhấn mạnh rằng cha mẹ không thể chỉ yêu cầu con giảm sử dụng điện thoại, mà trước hết cần nhìn lại chính thói quen sử dụng smartphone của mình. Trẻ em thường học từ hành vi của người lớn nhiều hơn từ lời nói. Nếu cha mẹ thường xuyên cầm điện thoại trước mặt con, việc yêu cầu trẻ tự kiểm soát sẽ khó đạt hiệu quả. Theo tiến sĩ Lee, quan hệ giữa cha mẹ và con cái có ảnh hưởng lớn tới việc phòng ngừa phụ thuộc smartphone. Khi gia đình có sự gắn bó, trò chuyện tích cực và các hoạt động chung, trẻ sẽ ít có xu hướng tìm kiếm sự an ủi hoặc giải trí duy nhất từ màn hình. Ngược lại, nếu trẻ cảm thấy cô đơn, bị phê phán hoặc thiếu kết nối với cha mẹ, việc kiểm soát điện thoại dễ trở thành một cuộc đối đầu. Vì vậy, cha mẹ cần bắt đầu từ việc tự đặt giới hạn cho bản thân, tăng thời gian trò chuyện với con và cùng con xây dựng quy tắc sử dụng thiết bị.  Bên cạnh giới hạn, cha mẹ cần tạo ra các lựa chọn thay thế hấp dẫn hơn. Các chuyên gia khuyến nghị trẻ nên vận động đều đặn, chơi thể thao, học nhạc cụ, đọc sách, tham gia hoạt động ngoài trời, chơi cùng bạn bè hoặc cùng gia đình thực hiện các hoạt động chung. Đặc biệt, vai trò của người cha cũng được nhấn mạnh. Nếu người cha không chỉ xuất hiện như người áp đặt kỷ luật, mà còn là bạn chơi và người đồng hành, trẻ sẽ có thêm sự ổn định cảm xúc và giảm nhu cầu tìm kiếm niềm vui từ màn hình. Khi trẻ có một đời sống ngoài màn hình đủ phong phú, smartphone sẽ không còn là nguồn giải trí duy nhất. Đây là điều kiện quan trọng để việc hạn chế thiết bị số không biến thành cuộc chiến căng thẳng giữa cha mẹ và con cái. Giáo dục trẻ về ứng xử trên không gian mạng Ngoài việc giới hạn thời gian sử dụng, quản lý smartphone cũng phải đi kèm giáo dục văn hóa ứng xử trên không gian mạng. Trẻ cần được dạy rằng dù trò chuyện trực tuyến, các em vẫn đang tương tác với con người thật. Vì vậy, trẻ cần hiểu rằng không được chửi bới, nói xấu, bắt nạt, xúc phạm hoặc làm tổn thương người khác trên mạng. Không gian mạng không phải là nơi trẻ có thể hành xử tùy tiện chỉ vì không nhìn thấy mặt đối phương. Đây là một phần quan trọng trong giáo dục công dân số cho trẻ em và thanh thiếu niên. Vấn đề không chỉ của gia đình, mà của cả xã hội Nhìn tổng thể, xu hướng tại Hàn Quốc cho thấy việc hạn chế trẻ em sử dụng smartphone không còn là câu chuyện riêng của từng gia đình. Đây đã trở thành một vấn đề giáo dục, y tế và xã hội. Từ khảo sát phụ huynh, đề xuất điện thoại an toàn cho học sinh, cho tới khuyến nghị của các bác sĩ nhi khoa, chuyên gia tâm lý và chuyên gia tâm thần học trẻ em, điểm chung đều là: trẻ em cần được bảo vệ khỏi việc tiếp xúc quá sớm và quá mức với thiết bị di động. “Are you really blind?” We three don't usually get questioned on whether or not we're really unable to see, but in a large room with around eight hundred people, BF Barry had the question posed to him as he held a mic and called out the guy, on stage, with the bag over his head. It's a somewhat x rated April mixed bag show, last one from Ireland to Canada for a while, with Sibling's Day having happened recently, but one difference between Canada and Ireland is that the word “siblings” isn't used in the latter like it is in the former. We spoke, back in February on our third Family Day show, about the word “siblings” with our brother and sister as our guests once more, while this time brother/co-host Brian shares how he learned since then that the word doesn't exist in Spanish either. This week on Outlook we speak on sister/co-host Kerry, BF Barry, and Oyster's recent adventures which include head injuries acquired in a hotel lobby, more lack of braille on the floors above, and inaccessible room menus. They share about getting over the “not Covid” along with fuel shortages and bus station closures, Brian describing his recent experience taking public transportation in Toronto, while Barry and Kerry were having to look for assistance from other travellers after being escorted by a security guard over the bridge when Dublin practically shut down (image description Brian reads painting the picture of a famous Irish capital city's street in the midst of country wide fuel protests by farmers). Also, the upheaval across Ireland produces flashbacks of the 2022 winter Ottawa trucker convoy and the chaos that too caused as we discuss how such protests, while reflecting real and serious issues in both countries, can create very real and serious barriers, especially for people with disabilities. Life is one giant puzzle and we spend it simply gathering up all the pieces we can and attempting to put them in some sort of working order. This week we're talking the puzzles of life on Outlook - it's nearly Rare Disease Day, an awareness day that is on the final day of February each year, as every four years it will then fall on February 29th, the rarest day of the year. Sister/co-host Kerry is sharing about recently looking into other possible conditions to add to the diagnosis she and brother/co-host Brian seem to be dealing with, as we also discuss more about the rare syndrome we have already been diagnosed with: Senior-Løken syndrome which includes our retinal blindness, kidney disease, and scoliosis. Kerry explains why she's taking things to the next level and what she's doing such as applying to get into a clinic in Toronto for connective tissue disorders and Brian explains the where and when and what of Senior-Løken. Kerry brings props into the studio for this one including a giant marble model of the Earth Barry gifted Kerry and the braille heart puzzle she gave BF Barry for Valentine's Day to illustrate how difficult it can be to sort out proper medical diagnosis for a wide array of physical and mental and emotional symptoms like ours. Also, to make a heart the right way up with the braille in its proper place. For years, as patients and spending plenty of time at children's hospitals, there were always puzzles to keep kids occupied, on tables in waiting rooms. Our older brother follows the steps, as he did when he came in, fully equipped, to figure out what the issue was with Kerry and Barry's surround system speaker while our grandfather always had someone's homemade wooden puzzle for us to figure out when we visited. Other members of our family have always had double jointed fingers, extra flexible feet and hands, enough that a few hundred years ago we could have been in sideshows, but with Kerry's latest symptom of daily foot pain we're reflecting back on our medical past while Kerry receives tests like an ECG of her heart to try to find out more about a possible hyper-mobility condition such as Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. We discuss running into our old Braille transcriber at a community spaghetti/lasagna dinner, sports including Canada's hockey losses in the Olympics and fantasy baseball starting up again, while BF Barry and Kerry announce they'll be flying with the leprechauns in March, springing once more four or five hours into the future with the clocks about to change and spring ahead. But before March we're finishing up February as the boys share about birthday month and Family Day, which Barry fits right in on, with the weekend guys night to celebrate our brother-in-law's birthday a day after Barry's and BF Barry looks Kerry up by searching her rare conditions, with a rough sounding voice which might be a clue into all the talking that went into attending guy's night. We're extra rare and BF Barry believes it. Sibling: each of two or more children or offspring having one or both parents in common; a brother or sister Regular co-host BF Barry isn't used to this term, being from Ireland where the word is less commonly used and more something clinical, a word a social worker might use. He is an only child so we figured he'd be the perfect person to moderate this year's Family Day sibling episode. This week on Outlook, in honour of it being Family Day, Outlook is doing our third one of these (after sibling episodes both in 2021 and 2022) and after taking a few years off of doing this themed show: us four Kijewski siblings are back together. We start by covering pets, like we often do the weather with our other guests, talking new dogs added to the gang since we last recorded one of these: bulldog Ethel having joined our brother's family (along with first bulldog Norman back in 2020) and including sister Kim's “big, dopey sweetheart” Otis the Golden Doodle. And we can't forget Barry's guide dog Oyster in the midst of it all. Sister Kim's family are down to zero bunnies after last count of eleven and we even cover brother Paul's longtime pet snake Mekus. From pets to wild animal encounters, Paul shares how he first got fascinated by snakes on a 1992 family vacation in Florida. While the sisters recount a surprise interaction with a rattlesnake on a gravel path, in the woods, at the camp all four of us attended as a pre-grade eight graduation class trip where Kim was sister/co-host Kerr's guide for the week. From pets and wildlife to children/nieces and nephew updates, Paul and Kim share about the ages their children are now at. Paul's Sophia is in high school, all grown up, and going for her driver's permit at the end of this year while Kim's daughter Mya is in third grade and liking school, nots so much until she is there, but enjoys a good old snow day when she can get it growing up in snowy Canada like we four all did. The nephews (Reed and Max) are growing up too. Max is an old soul and constantly surprises his mother and father, melts his mother Sue's/Paul's wife's heart with the things he says. Kim's Reed is heading for the same camp we all attended, near to Kerry's favourite memorable spot on the rocks by the water, heading for graduation from eighth grade and onward to high school next year. Kerry will only be down the street if he ever needs somewhere to go for lunch. Barry inquires whether our sibling's peers ever said anything mean about Paul and Kim having younger siblings who were blind, but the answer is surprising, more hopeful and positive than that. Then, he asks them if they ever liked to tease us because we couldn't see them, however their answer is a regular, boring one whereby we all recount tormenting each other in equal measure (sneaking up on one another) just like any other sibling might do. We all get along rather well and our memories are of growing up in a family like any other, the usual fighting over the TV, as only child Barry ponders what it might be like to have such close bonded relationships as we've been lucky enough to have. We talk the effort our sister and brother make to learn enough braille to make holiday cards for us in accessible formats, while this next generation continues, in curiosity with our niece having made braille bookmarks to hand out to her teacher and classmates in the past. It's a good, old fashioned family conversation about snakes and dogs and kids. Barry says, in regards to doing this show with the four of us: A good bunch you's are. While oldest sibling Paul says in reply: We like talking to you. You are a good dude. And so BF Barry leads us through this familial chat as part of our family now. Maybe next year he will do an episode where he and our sister and brother-in-law have a chat about what it's like joining the Kijewski family along the way.
