With just a few short weeks until the winter holidays hit, Jam and Ian forgo Christmas music to instead ponder some questions posed by the most existential of winter symbols: snowpeople. Instead of reminding us of the inevibility of death, these snow-person songs ask us to ponder why we project our own cultural hegemonic order onto three balls of snow with some sticks in them. That's the theme! Cultural hegemony vis-a-vis snowmen!! First up is "Hanukkah Snowman" by folk-punk artist Phranc, followed by "Snow People" by The Okee Dokee Brothers. Does Jam, for not the first time on the podcast, spend an extraordinary amount of the episode talking about the weird sequel to the Rankin-Bass Frosty the Snowman in which he gets married and also The Bible brings a snowparson to life? Guess, buddy. The ranking music in this episode is "Winter Wonderland" by Earth, Wind & Fire.

The Okee Dokee Brothers are a Grammy Award-winning bluegrass and American roots children's music duo of Joe Mainlander and Justin Lansing. They're known for their joyful brand of music that that inspire families to spend more time outside. In 2012, the duo won a Grammy for their adventure album Can You Canoe, which was created during a month-long paddle down the Mississippi River.  I am so excited to share today's episode because it features one of my family's favorite musicians - Joe Mailander from the Okee Dokee Brothers. My kids love listening to the Okee Dokee Brothers nature-inspired albums. They are one of our favorites to turn on for a morning dance party. My family had the opportunity to see the Okee Dokee Brothers in our small town in Minnesota. It was a free outdoor concert - and my kids loved it! After the show, Joe agreed to come on the podcast and share the inspiration for their outdoor influenced music. Three of the Okee Dokee Brothers albums are influenced from first hand adventures. Joe is also a father. He discussed with me how his music has changed after fatherhood, as well as how his approach to the outdoors has changed. We also talk about how he and his band mate, Justin grew up playing in the creeks and woods near their homes in Denver. The Okee Dokee Brothers have won a Grammy for their album, Can You Canoe and have been nominated several times since. This year they declined the nomination after the category for best children's album was once again filled with white men. We discuss this decision and I have included works of BIPOC musicians in the show notes.  Before we begin the show, I want to encourage you to go to outdoorsyfamilies.com and sign up for the weekly newsletter. Grammy nominees from the children’s music category in 2017 for a special concert held at Lucky Strike Live in Hollywood spoke with me about their work and what worked for them. We discussed their inspiration and tips for making it in the music business. One common theme was the importance of doing what is authentic to you and not doing what you think would work, just because it’s a formula. Almost all of the artists also discussed that they were musicians outside of children’s music first and found it easier to balance family life and music life when they switched to children’s music. Another theme that emerged was the importance of working away at your music career and basically doing the work both musically and on the business end. The nominees were Brady Rymer and The Little Band that Could, Frances England, Okee Dokee Brothers, Recess Monkey and Secret Agent 23 Skidoo. he Okee Dokee Brothers perform at the 2011 National Book Festival. Speaker Biography: As childhood best friends, Joe Mailander and Justin Lansing dreamed of being professional singer-songwriters. Then, one day (poof!) they were all grown up and playing their music on the scene. Inspired by their own backyard adventures, the Okee Dokee Brothers perform original music that reminds audiences of their own make-believes and treehouse-pretendings. Their CD, "Take It Outside," and their live shows can transport you to the wilds of Africa, to the tip-top of a gigantic rollercoaster, or down the Mississippi on a homemade raft.
