What connects Seattle with Ray Charles, Quincy Jones, and Kenny G? How about the Melvins, Sleater-Kinney, and Foo Fighters? And Sir Mix-a-Lot, Macklemore, and Travis Thompson? If you don't know, KEXP DJ and musician Eva Walker and music writer Jake Uitti can tell you. Walker and Uitti have created a timeline of Seattle's music evolution through the lens of 101 songs spanning 80 years, the culmination of which, they say, creates a distinct “Seattle sound.” In their book, The Sound of Seattle, they highlight notable music and musicians who have ties with the Emerald city. It all begins in 1942 when Washington-born Bing Crosby records what will become the world's best selling single of all time, “White Christmas.” From there, Walker and Uitti explore multiple genres including jazz, rock, punk, riot grrrl, pop, rap, grunge, indie, emo, and more. This playlist, they believe, helped create Seattle's culture. With a foreword by Pearl Jam lead guitarist Mike McCready, The Sound of Seattle is organized by decade and includes interviews with Seattle legends like Heart's Nancy Wilson, as well as sidebars showcasing musical landmarks throughout the city. Seattle has many connections to music, and Walker and Uitti would argue that the city is shaped by them, and in turn, shape the people living in it. Eva Walker plays in the rock ‘n' roll band The Black Tones and is a DJ at KEXP. Born and raised in Seattle, Washington, she comes from a southern family of educators and music lovers. Her Louisiana-bred mother and grandparents have greatly influenced her music, work ethic, and manners. Eva believes in discovering, listening to, and experiencing music as much as possible. She has a deep love for Seattle music — from Jimi Hendrix to Jimmy James — and is an avid fan of classics, rediscoveries, and rare recordings. Jake Uitti's work has appeared in Vanity Fair, The Guardian, Interview, The Nation, The Athletic and many more publications. When not immersed mid-interview, Jake can be found in search of the city's best fried chicken or cheese pizza slice. He is the co-author of memoirs with NBA stars Muggsy Bogues, Earl Cureton and Michael Ray Richardson, and co-author of The Sound of Seattle: 101 Songs that Shaped a City with his radio DJ wife. The son of Ivy League professors, Jake grew up amidst tomes of French literature, but soulful meals, thoughtful music, thrilling sports, and compelling conversations are his true loves. Molly Sides is the dynamic frontwoman for the fiery all-female rock band Thunderpussy. A dancer, teacher, singer, songwriter and much more, she is incandescent. Jimmy James is one of the world's best guitar players. With a distinctive sound all his own, James has topped Billboard charts and is the consummate band leader in groups like The True Loves. Evan Flory-Barnes is a bassist and composer who has been creating and performing music since high school. He has worked with a wide range of artists and bands across various genres, performing across the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Africa. Marco Collins has discovered and helped break more bands than some radio stations. His name is in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and he's a legend in his own time. Thunderpussy is a band that elicits an immediate, visceral reaction. Even their NSFW name is unapologetic, brash, and controversial, and that's exactly how they like it. The Seattle-based rock band launched in 2014 with founding members Whitney Petty on guitar and Molly Sides on vocals, and today, their all-women lineup also includes bassist Leah Julius and drummers Lindsey Elias and Michelle Nuno. We have Whitney with us on the podcast to talk about the band's origins and journey over the past 10 years, which culminated with a collaborative release with Yonder Cider. Caitlin Braam is the founder and CEO of Yonder Cider and The Source, Yonder's sister company that provides custom pressing, juicing, and fermenting solutions for cideries around the United States. She joins Whitney to talk about Yonder's first collaboration with a band—what they expected, what surprised them, and how the whole thing shook out. Thunderpussy happens to be the favorite band of Yonder's head cider maker, Monique Tribble, and the release was an opportunity for everyone to fangirl out on one another with delicious results.  You'll hear about how both women-led groups have strategically avoided dealing with male energy in their often overpoweringly masculine fields of music and alcohol, and how even acknowledging that aspect has changed over the years. Whitney shares her excitement to dive deeper into the world of cider, and echoes the same joy that I think a lot of new cider drinkers are surprised to find once they give it a chance. I wouldn't listen to this conversation with kids in the room, so grab some headphones, and maybe a cider, and listen in.

Thunderpussy is an all-female punk rock kinda band with plenty of attitude! These girls rock, I really like their presence on stage, and the fact that they work so hard touring and deliver a kick-ass set of punk rock attitude with a bit of glam. The girls are all accomplished musicians, and the vocalist Molly Sides has an enchanting voice that can be pushed up or down delivering kick-ass or kick-down lyrics.  Was pleased to have come across these girls and feature them now daily on the Ride Time Radio Show getting them some well-deserved exposure. I'm continuing to come at you with in-person interviews from festivals around the country -- and this time I'm celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Bumbershoot Arts and Music Festival, which took place in Seattle over Labor Day weekend.  In this Part 1 of another intriguing three-part series, I first sit down for a rousing conversation with Thunderpussy, a local Seattle staple, to celebrate the inclusivity and empowerment which are hallmarks of both Thunderpussy and the Seattle scene at-large. These amazing women will rock your socks off, among other things!!  Next up is one of my favorite people on the planet, the artist/musician/activist/mental health advocate, Cameron Lavi-Jones of the kick-ass rockband, King Youngblood. Cameron will literally and figuratively rock your world as he talks to me about the myriad causes he passionately and actively supports. He is a total gem of a human!Destroy Boys is in the 3-slot as I sat down with these thoughtful, energetic and surprisingly reflective punk rockers to discuss their roots in the Bay Area punk scene. As we gather outside the KEXP studios, they explain to me the nature and essence of the energy and purpose they bring to their fans around the globe.Last up are twins Cedric and Eva Walker, The Black Tones, who talk to me about their Seattle roots mixed with a New Orleans heritage, and how Rice Krispie treats can be so amazing.  This charming duo gives a new meaning to the love of family while bringing a unique energy and warmth to all their music and beyond.    For more information on Roadcase: https://linktr.ee/roadcasepod and https://www.roadcasepod.comContact: info@roadcasepod.comRoadcase theme music:  "Eugene (Instrumental)" by Waltzer

In this episode, local musicians Korum Bischoff of the Grammy-nominated band Recess Monkey and Leah Julius of Thunderpussy catch up on old times and new. These longtime friends deep dive into their personal histories. From Korum getting his first music gig playing the drum roll for BPA's groundbreaking event in 1992, to the moment they met when Leah began taking drum lessons from Korum at age 10, they'll cover how their lives (and the music that fills them) have progressed over the years. With the COVID-19 pandemic giving them both plenty of time to reflect on their relationships with music, they'll discuss how it's just as easy to lose touch with your creative outlet as it is to find a new one when the world turns upside down. Between Korum's new love for recording music at home and Leah's desire to go back to school to get a degree in public policy, both know they have a voice and are not afraid to use it.   ABOUT KORUM Music has always been an important part of Korum's life. Some of his earliest memories were of hanging out in the studio, bashing on his dad’s drums and piano. He attended Edmonds Community College and became the drummer for their internationally recognized vocal jazz ensemble Soundsation. After a life-changing sailing adventure with his family, he returned to the Pacific Northwest and studied music at the UW and started teaching drums privately. After a break from gigging to raise two kids, he re-entered the music scene in a genre that worked perfectly for a parent of two small boys—as a drummer in the family music genre, first with The Johnny Bregar Band and then since 2012 with Recess Monkey.   ABOUT LEAH Over more than a decade of writing, recording, and performing music, Seattle based musician, Leah Julius, has become a mainstay of the Pacific Northwest music community. The goats brought in to clean up Riverside Park are taking a summer vacation! The original flock brought to the park in May was narrowed down from 24 to 18 after they cleaned out the weeds too quickly, and now the group will be meeting back up at their farm in Rhinebeck, NY while the weeds are allowed to regrow a bit on the steep slopes of Riverside Park that they were maintaining. As part of their going-away party, the Riverside Park Conservancy honored Massey the goat with an award for receiving the most votes in an online contest. The 166-pound, 10-year-old goat is the oldest of the bunch and received a bouquet of edible flowers as a prize. Watch for the goats to return later in the summer when they will be back for a second round of snacking on the invasive plants that will further weaken them and ensure they don't have the energy left to regrow again. In July, one day before the anniversary of Eric Garner's death, the Department of Justice, now overseen by Trump-appointed Attorney General William Barr, announced that they will not pursue civil rights charges against officer Pantaleo, who was seen in video putting Garner in a chokehold. Immediately after, the NYPD was quick to point out that their own internal disciplinary case against Pantaleo was still underway, and on August 2nd, an NYPD judge ruled that the officer should be fired due to his use of a chokehold when attempting to arrest Eric Garner, a tactic that is prohibited by NYPD policy and was listed by the city medical examiner as a contributing factor in Garner's death. Although the ruling is preliminary, Pantaleo was suspended effective immediately, after being kept employed in administrative duty during the five years since Eric Garner's death. The announcement came days after de Blasio was heckled by protesters demanding he fire Pantaleo during the second Democratic Presidential primary debates in Detroit. In response, he continued to claim that justice would be served in the next 30 days. Fellow Democratic candidate Kirsten Gillibrand had a more decisive answer. nn De Blasio has been polling between 0% and 1% among likely voters. nn The NYPD judge's decision will now make its way to NYPD Commissioner O'Neill, who will decide whether to fire Pantaleo in the upcoming weeks. City Council Speaker Corey Johnson released a statement saying: This decision is long overdue. It should not have taken five years to determine what the public clearly understood in five minutes: Officer Pantaleo used an illegal chokehold on Eric Garner, which ultimately led to his death. nn Now Police Commissioner O'Neill must act. Pantaleo must be fired immediately. Nothing will bring back Mr. Garner, but I hope this decision gives the Garner family some peace 15 years ago on August 3, 2004 — The pedestal of the Statue of Liberty reopens for the first time since the September 11th attacks You may not think of the city as harboring invasive insects, but arborists from the national Department of Agriculture have been inspecting trees in Brooklyn and Queens for Asian longhorn beetles. The beetles are thought to have originally traveled to the United States in 1996 in wooden shipping pallets, and now they threaten trees across the city. Inspectors search for the telltale signs of round holes in the wood of a tree, where the adult beetles emerge in late July. nn Keep an eye out for the signs of beetle infestation on your local trees: They create deep round holes big enough for a pencil to fit in and leave a collection of sawdust below the holes. The beetles themselves are about one and a half inches long, mostly black with white specks, and have distinctive blue stripes on their legs and long striped antennae. If you find a tree or piece of wood that may be infested, call the Asian longhorned beetle tip line at 1-866-702-9938 or email foresthealth@dec.ny.gov. 9 years ago on August 9, 2010 — Upon landing at JFK, a JetBlue flight attendant announces that he is quitting his job and exits the jet via the emergency evacuation slide, taking two beers with him 42 years ago on August 10, 1977 — David Berkowitz is taken into custody 3 years ago on August 10, 2016 — A man partially climbs Trump Tower And finally, thanks go out to Eric Boyo, an MTA subway operator for 27 years who stopped his train to help a woman on the tracks this week. As he approached Fulton Street on the G Train line, he noticed people on the platform waving their arms. Seeing that something must be wrong, he slowed his train early and then spotted a woman on the tracks. He stopped the train and opened the door at the front of the train to speak with the woman, and ended up helping her back onto the platform. Whether the woman intended to be struck by the train or had just fallen was unclear, but onlookers praised Eric for remaining calm and showing compassion during the rescue. According to the MTA, the recommended way to flag down an oncoming train during an emergency situation is to light your cellphone's flashlight and wave it side to side while facing the train. Seattle rock 'n' roll quartet Thunderpussy is all about riffing and wailing. Their self-titled debut — released earlier this year on Stardog Records — is a round dozen of killer cuts, but the band also shines in live performance. Replete with costumes, rock jumps, and high kicks, Thunderpussy brings a visual element to its shows that is sorely needed in an age of black t-shirts and beards. It's matched by Thunderpussy's music videos, which play out like mini movies, whether they're narrative or performance-driven. So, it's no surprise that frontwoman and vocalist Molly Sides was chosen as the star of director Robert McGinley's 2017 independent sci-fi actioner, Danger Diva. The movie is about a hard rocking singer coerced into becoming a technologically altered diva by her high billionaire patron. It came early in the band's career, so it provides a really interesting snapshot of the band while they were still nascent rock gods. We spoke with Sides last month about the film and her experience making it.

Rocky Horror Picture Show – en ständigt pågående tidsvurpa

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 13, 2015 54:34

Musikalfilmen Rocky Horror Picture Show från 1975 är ett hopkok av skräck, science fiction, cabaret och glam, som tar publiken till en plats där konventioner ifråga om både sex och stil sätts i svaj. Rocky Horror Picture Show hade premiär i augusti 1975 och firar därmed 40-årsjubileum i höst.
