I had the absolute pleasure to explore more of Ian's perspective on social entrepreneurship and life in general given his vast experience in the space. It was specifically thrilling given that he's been working from and in South Africa for an extended time and shared his view on the potential he witnesses and the differences in culture and the difficulties they face.To give you more on his background, Ian Calvert is an internationally recognised expert on purpose-driven business, innovation and entrepreneurship, with 32 years of leadership, marketing and entrepreneurship experience. Ian led the creation and expansion of Red Bull Amaphiko, an international programme aimed at enabling early-stage, community-based social entrepreneurs. He drove the global growth of the programme which ran in 15 countries, including the USA, UK, Brazil & South Africa, and which enabled thousands of early-stage social entrepreneurs. At the beginning of 2020, Ian spun-off the Amaphiko programme into an independent impact venture called FURTHER, using a high performance human development approach to grow a global fellowship of impact-driven entrepreneurs. He is also a strategic advisor and fellowship selection panelist for Ashoka, the world’s authority on social entrepreneurship. An Honours graduate of Birmingham (UK) and Aix-Marseille (France) Universities, he began his career at Ogilvy & Mather London before moving to Ogilvy in Cape Town, becoming the youngest ever Board Director at the age of 29. He founded a number of internationally successful advertising and marketing agencies, including Instant Grass, collaboration agency that harnesses networks of influential consumers to collaborate in the innovation process for global brands such as Levi Strauss, adidas, Nike, Red Bull and Diageo. Ian drove the expansion of Instant Grass International into Russia, Japan, Middle East and Africa. It is now recognised as a global authority on youth in emerging markets.

Back to Mercedes- Mercedes is the Brand Partnerships manager at Complex, a host and personality on Heels Off, a DJ- she’s DJ’d for some of the biggest names in the industry including Jaden Smith and Tiwa Savage and she’s an influencer and the Founder of Social Fixt.Mercedes inspiration to start this business was built out of frustration. At the age of 24 she had the most amazing opportunity to work for the biggest tech company in the world. Once she arrived she realised very soon that she would be 1 of 1. Mercedes wanted to see other people like herself in boardrooms and in the ideation meetings. To solve this problem, Mercedes founded Social Fixt which uses social media to list jobs in the creative industry in the Facebook group and on the website. She also hosts events that encourage the BAME community to 'know their worth'.I caught up with Mercedes at Red Bull Amaphiko to get the tea on how she finds the team to do it all and then some. In this episode we talk about focus, time management, diversifying your income, growing a brand, embracing being watched by others and behind the scenes of being an influencer. Let’s dive in! When Mercedes said people can be watching you to big you up, I was immediately in my feelings! Isn’t that the absolute best way to look at life. There are so many people that want to see you win, yet social media will have you feeling scared to step out and share your gifts. No more- you’ve got this! Your Town was planted when the Founder, Mark White, sent himself an email in 2011 with an idea for a running event that started and finished in Hoddesdon town centre. Three years on, a chance meeting in April 2014 brought ‘Give Your Town The Run Around' to life, and following a steep learning curve, our first event happened just 5 months later in September 2014. A year later in October 2015, after putting on two more successful events, the company decided to have a permanent presence in town and invested in our first Street Office. And so… Your Town was born! Fast forward a few years and Your Town pursued their passion for building and celebrating community in a diverse range of ways. In December 2015, they launched Your Town Clubs, with free weekly clubs for local runners and walkers. In October 2016 they piloted our first “Get-Togethers” simultaneously across three Hertfordshire towns with a run, walk and bike ride for up to 100 participants in each. During the summer 2017, they kicked off “Give Your School the Run Around” programme, which included 10 local primary schools in activities to raise awareness of health, wellbeing and community, culminating in a grand finale event hosted by a local secondary school. More than most people I get to see the power of what exercise can do to a community. Mark has a passion for it too and it was amazing to see. It was great to meet him and I am so glad he got the chance to be a part of the Redbull Ampahiko Academy. On that note going up and seeing what the Redbull Amaphiko Academy was all about was pretty sensational!! For those that don't know what it is the Red Bull Amaphiko is a programme to help Social Entrepreneurs create innovative and sustainable change in their communities. This episode is the last part of a 3 part series I recorded. I also interviewed two other great guys with two other great business. The environmental issues we are faced with today are quite shocking. I in the past have been quite oblivious / ignorant towards them. However over the past 18 months I have had my eyes opened by certain people around me. Doing my research for Sean Morrison, the cofounder of Pulsitos, gave me another opportunity to learn more around particularly the issues surrounding plastic pollution and other environmental issues. Pulsitos are a healthy snack that leads to healthy people and a healthy environment. Their product is good for the environment and it's packaging does nothing to harm it. With 8 billion tonnes of plastic polluting our oceans every year... something has to be done. If more companies operated line Pulsitos then the world would be a better place. This was a great episode to record as I got on really well with Sean. A really switched on man who really cares about what he is doing. Along with his wife I believe they will do some amazing things with Pulsitos! It was great to meet him and I am so glad he got the chance to be a part of the Redbull Ampahiko Academy. On that note going up and seeing what the Redbull Amaphiko Academy was all about was pretty sensational!! Ben Slack is the founder of the Swan Song Project. The Swan Song Project gives people facing end of life and those surrounding them the opportunity to write and record their own original song. A professional songwriter provides support to guide each person, through finding the initial idea to the completed recording. No previous musical experience or abilities are required. Everyone has a unique way of expressing themselves and this is what makes great songs. With the right support everyone can do it. Ben is such a down to earth, kind and positive guy. It was great to meet him and I am so glad he got the chance to be a part of the Redbull Ampahiko Academy. Ian is a Global Project Leader for Red Bull Amaphiko since 2014. I met Ian because of my own involvement with Amaphiko as I was accepted into the fellowship after submitting an application for WellBuilt Bikes. Amaphiko is a global development programme designed to unlock the potential of grass-roots, community-based social entrepreneurs; it is active in 12 countries, including US, UK, Brazil, Germany, Turkey, South Africa. Ian has a background in philosophy and advertising, which, as he explains in our conversation, go really well together as they are both about turning abstract ideas into concrete statements. This background has served him well as his calling has taken on a more explicit social calling to build up and support social entrepreneurs. Given his access to these entrepreneurs, Ian has grown into something of an authority on the space, which is itself, in many ways en emerging space at the overlap of the old for/non profit dichotomy. I was so excited to get this time to talk through Ians life, his work, his perspective on the future of work for social entrepreneurs, and the future business in general. Enjoy. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/theworkethic/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/theworkethic/support

SME Zone — Social entrepreneurship is a phenomenon that seeks to contribute to poverty alleviation and job creation but how is this achieved and what are the challenges that come your way? Nhlanhla Ndlovu, a Red Bull Amaphiko participant & Social Entrepreneur, and Gavin Weale, Founder and Managing Director of Livity Africa, give us a masterclass on what Social Entrepreneurship is all about.
Though I missed the opportunity to participate in Red Bull Amaphiko when it came to Baltimore, I did get the opportunity to interview one of its 2017 fellow, Dominic Nell (aka Farmer Nell). Other fellows of the program include past guests C Harvey and Walker tha Urban Farmer. Farmer Nell has his feet planted in two worlds. The first is the world of photography and videography, which is his bread and butter. That hustle and a joke he made while on the job for a client allowed him to step into the world of urban agriculture and found City Weeds. Listen as Nell explains how he got started with City Weeds, how he uses his day job to push his passion project forward, and what he wants the urban youth to take away from his social programs. Follow Dominic on Instagram, @nellaware.

Even though we work on hundreds of different issues across a similarly diverse group of settings, I think the argument could be made that the work of the social sector is ultimately focused on creating a world where all humans have equal opportunity to flourish. This is at the base of what we’re doing with programing that seeks to improve financial systems, agricultural practices, environmental protections, health systems and education. And, one of the things we know, unequivocally, is that women have received the short end of the stick, almost no matter how you measure it. Here’s the thing: marginalization of women doesn’t just happen in traditional development settings. It’s alive and well in the US, Europe… and, well, every other leading economy on the planet. This is why I’m especially pleased to have Claire Wasserman as my guest for the 178th Terms of Reference Podcast. Claire is the founder of Ladies Get Paid - an organization focused, currently, on empowering women in the workplace. As you’ll hear in the show, I found Claire when seeking to learn more about Red Bull Amaphiko, where she is the Deputy US editor. Red Bull Amaphiko is a is a collaborative platform for social entrepreneurs that is sponsored by the energy drink company of the same name. But our conversation quickly turns to how Ladies Get Paid was founded and has quickly expanded into a phenomenon of 10,000 women... and growing. You're going to love this show where we talk about women rising up to get what they deserve, and how one woman has made the leap to be a leader in that movement.
I had the privilege of sitting down with three wonderful humans while spending just a few hours in Baltimore, MD. We met up at Baltimore’s ImpactHub location and I met with them one after the other. By the end, I was drained, encouraged, and, more than anything, had real love in my heart for these three people and the city they cared for and loved. First, you’ll hear my conversation with David Fakunle. David has lived his entire life in Baltimore. He has a PhD in Mental Health from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. I love David’s energy and spirit! Baltimore is blessed to have him. Second, you’ll hear my chat with C. Harvey. She talks about her life, her struggles, and her art. She’s an amazing person who has overcome so much and continues to fight! Lastly, you’ll hear the conversation I had with Rodney Foxworth. This brother is a force to be reckoned with. He is a quiet man but his life packs a punch. Rodney co-founded ImpactHub Baltimore, he founded and is the CEO of Invested Impact, and he is involved, in so many ways, in making Baltimore a better place. I know you’ll be encouraged by these conversations and I trust you’ll love you city, town, or neighborhood more as a result of hearing us chat. If you want to learn more about David, you can find his TEDx talk here. If you want to keep up with C. Harvey, you can learn more about her by reading her bio or by following her Baltimore’s Gifted brand on Instagram. If you want to find out all that Rodney Foxworth is involved in, read here.
