A.J. here. My recent conversation with Cambridge Professor Hamza Mudassir completely changed how I think about business strategy in the age of AI. Hamza isn't just another academic—he's led three $650M+ exits and has uniquely positioned himself at the intersection of practical business success and cutting-edge AI research.About Hamza MudassirHamza Mudassir is a Strategy Lecturer at Cambridge University, where he brings digital disruption to life for his MBA, EMBA, and MPhil students. He's also the founder of two ventures—Platypodes.io and Strategize.inc—where he helps businesses navigate big changes in AI and corporate strategy. With an MBA from the Cambridge Judge Business School, advanced AI strategy training at MIT, and M&A at INSEAD, Hamza combines deep expertise with hands-on experience.Over the years, Hamza has held top roles at companies like Amazon, Jagex, and Adstream, leading them through significant growth and successful sales—three in the past six years! His insights on strategy and AI frequently appear in Harvard Business Review and Fast Company, bringing his unique take on the future of business to a broad audience. Outside work, he's a die-hard gamer with every console imaginable, often joined by his two Ragdoll cats for gaming marathons while helping his daughter reach her dream of being a KPop star. What struck me most was his insight that the era of rigid business frameworks is ending. These frameworks were created when we had limited data and needed simple models to understand complex business environments. But now, AI can simulate millions of scenarios, incorporating centuries of business wisdom, market dynamics, and competitive responses.During our conversation, I shared how I recently helped increase an acquisition price by $150K simply by using AI to analyze negotiation patterns. This isn't theoretical, and Hamza explained how it's happening now, and entrepreneurs who need to pay attention risk being left behind. What fascinated me was Hamza's prediction that within 5-10 years, AI will assist in things like negotiating and making most routine business decisions, leaving entrepreneurs free to focus on big-picture innovation and exceptional situations. He compared where we are now to "the Wild West of AI" - a time of incredible opportunity for those willing to embrace it.Also, what resonated with me was that the best businesses aren't the ones with the fanciest strategies—they're the ones that consistently execute the basics well. But as entrepreneurs, we all know how hard it is to maintain that consistency while juggling fires, opportunities, and daily chaos. This is where AI becomes your secret weapon - not for replacing your judgment, but for:- Testing decisions against millions of scenarios before committing resources- Identifying blind spots in your thinking (we all have them)- Keeping you focused on proven growth drivers when shiny objects appear- Providing pattern-matching insights from centuries of business history- Challenging your assumptions with data-driven perspectivesIn this episode, we dive deep into practical steps entrepreneurs can take to leverage AI for better strategic decisions, including:- How to ensure your business data is clean and properly structured- Ways to experiment with current AI tools to analyze patterns in your business decisions- Focusing on using AI to maintain consistency in your core business processes- Identifying areas where AI can help you stick to proven strategies instead of chasing every new opportunityIf you're building a business that needs to thrive in the AI age (and that's all of us), this is an episode you can't miss.Key Insights:Use AI to test your ideas. With AI, you can create a “digital twin” of your business and try out different ideas without taking real-world risks. The AI will learn your decision-making style and help you see what works.Make time for deep reflection. Running a business can be isolating, especially when making big decisions. Find ways to reflect safely, like using unbiased feedback or finding a space where you can think freely about your direction.Get comfortable with uncertainty. The entrepreneurial journey often involves unexpected twists and turns. Embrace flexibility and be ready to adapt as new information or challenges come up. Sometimes, having a mindset that allows for uncertainty is a key strength.Plan for “What ifs” with AI. Use AI to run many “what if” scenarios, including rare but impactful situations. This can prepare you for surprises and keep your business steady through unexpected changes.Model your business ecosystem. Simulate how competitors, customers, and policies affect your business. This will help you make smarter choices by showing how different moves might play out in the market and how all players are connected.Hamza's best advice for entrepreneurs:"You could have an AI that can effectively not just navigate a digital twin of your company and make great decisions and do it in a variety of scenarios that you can learn from. But over time, if you interact with it enough, you are effectively creating a digital twin of your own self."From Chaos to Clarity: Let's Work Together for AI to Help You GrowAfter this fascinating conversation with Hamza, I want to help you implement these insights for your business. As someone who's worked with many companies over the years, I understand the challenges of implementing new strategies while maintaining daily operations. Through Beyond8Figures and my consulting practice, I help entrepreneurs set up the right analytics infrastructure and identify which decisions will benefit most from AI assistance - without disrupting their current operations. We start with the basics: ensuring your data is clean and your metrics are meaningful. Then, we build toward more sophisticated AI applications that enhance your decision-making process. Small, strategic steps in the right direction can significantly improve how you run your business. Building a fintech is very difficult. Launching a fintech startup serving the travel business a few months before covid brought travel to a halt is crazy difficult. Raman Korneu, an MBA alumnus from Cambridge Judge Business School and his team, had to make tough decisions quickly if they were to save their start up. Raman talks about his entrepreneurial journey, and how myTU - an online digital banking platform - was born and how digital-first fintechs have a huge advantage over legacy providers.
The 2024 U.S. presidential election presents a unique paradox in political strategy. As both major parties vie for a win this election season, they may be overlooking the potential long-term consequences of their success. Their strategies cause pause and reflection on what truly constitutes a political victory in the broader context of American democracy. Stephen Lile from University of Cambridge Judge Business School proposes that the victory could actually be a loss in 2024, which could lead to more substantial, enduring gains for either party in subsequent election cycles.

This edition of The Big Experiment is a little bit different to the usual format.I'm on the road visiting the famous University of Cambridge Judge Business School to talk to people at the Ignite program. It's an intensive weeklong boot camp for early-stage founders, generally in tech and sometimes in biotech, but can be all sorts of different tech themes.Ignite is about business and risk, which are the core themes of the podcast. But it's a slightly different flavour to usual. Science is all about predicting the future. As a scientist, you already know something, but usually not everything about your area of study. And from that fuzzy picture, you try to predict what else might be true. Well, this hunch or hypothesis drives your next experiments. If you fail, you adjust your prediction and you test again. Entrepreneurs take the same leap. In this episode I interview volunteers, delegates and course leaders to find out more about how the Ignite program supports early-stage founders in science and in business.“Ignite gives entrepreneurs a safe but challenging space to develop their ideas.” – Anne DavidsonYou'll hear about:01:33 Science, business, and risk03:00 Early-stage founders and their ideas at Ignite06:10 Intrapreneurship: Supporting entrepreneurial initiatives09:46 Delegates' impressions and takeaways from the Ignite program15:24 Pitching competition and the value of Ignite19:42 Approaching innovation and sustainability23:27 The role of mentors and volunteers in supporting delegates23:56 Creating a safe and challenging space for entrepreneurs27:37 Attracting a diverse range of delegates30:36 Effective communication and customer perspective33:18 Discovering roles within a startup37:38 Networking and knowledge exchange40:54 Anyone can learn and start a business Find out more about Ignite: https://www.jbs.cam.ac.uk/entrepreneurship/programmes/ignite/who-is-ignite-for/ Connect with me: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/markdavison100/ Grant Instruments: https://www.grantinstruments.com/ Grant Instruments on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/grant-instruments-cambridge-ltd/

Today's episode is the third in our series on decarbonizing the roots of value chains, where we're looking deep into supply chains that serve many industries. Previously we talked about green concrete and steel, and today we're turning to agriculture. Chris Marquis, a professor at the University of Cambridge Judge Business School sheds light on regenerative agriculture, a set of practices that restore farming ecosystems while having the potential to decarbonize. We'll also talk about his new book The Profiteers, where he discusses the need to hold companies accountable for the environmental and social externalities associated with their operations and supply chains, and he describes how some companies have engaged in what he calls “corporate gaslighting” to shift the focus of responsibility onto others.
In our latest episode we discuss with Professor Christopher Marquis, formerly at Harvard Business School and now at Cambridge Judge Business School, a world leading academic in the study of the business for good movement,. We explore the urgent need to shift from a shareholder-centric view of business to a stakeholder-oriented model that truly considers the environmental and social impacts of corporate actions. Chris shares his insights on the evolution of sustainability, summarized in his 3 books, from Better Business to the most recent, “The Profiteers” . We discuss the pivotal role of movements like the B Corp in remaking capitalism and the challenges businesses face in this transition. Then, discussing the second book, Mao and the Markets, we dive into the complexities of the Chinese economic system and what Western businesses can learn from China's approach to sustainability and long-term planning. His latest research, summed in the book “The Profiteers-How Business Privatizes Profits and Socializes Costs” unveils the concept of the "Corporate Free Lunch," explaining how businesses have historically externalized their costs, pushing them onto society and the environment, and what can be done to change this extractive paradigm. Learn about pioneering companies leading the way toward a regenerative model of capitalism and how the concept of positive externalities is shaping the future of responsible business. From Natura's innovative integrated profit and loss statement to the broader implications of European Union policies, Chris provides a roadmap for how businesses and consumers alike can contribute to a more sustainable and equitable world. If you wanted children but weren't able to have them, you are tasked with making peace with a life you didn't choose. This grieving process occurs inside a culture that often has little respect for the childless. In this episode, Andrew speaks with psychotherapist Jody Day about grief, how ageing is different if you are not a parent, and how to find meaning, purpose and identity in what can feel like a very negative social context. Jody Day is the British founder of Gateway Women, the global support & advocacy network for childless women. She's the author of what many professionals consider to be the ‘go-to' book on the topic, Living the Life Unexpected: How to find hope, meaning and a fulfilling future without children. Jody was chosen as one of the BBC's 100 Women in 2013 & a UK Digital Woman of the Year in 2021. She is a global thought leader on female involuntary childlessness, a psychotherapist, a 2017 and 2022 TEDx speaker, a founding and former board member at the UK Charity Ageing Without Children and a former Fellow in Social Innovation at Cambridge Judge Business School. After a lifetime in London, she now lives by the sea in West Cork, rural Ireland, where she's completing a novel (featuring a childless heroine of course!) and nurturing her emerging Gateway Elderwomen project. Was it years of quantitative easing, or is it a case of lax regulation? Are we seeing the exposure of fundamentally weak banks, or is this as bad as it will get? Simon Taylor, Cambridge Judge Business School faculty explores the ongoing banking crisis that has been shaking the global economy.

Tim Harvey-Smith spent more than 20 years in equity capital markets and teaches the Finance Concentration for the Cambridge MBA. He is on the board of UK-based challenger bank that caters to SMEs. ESG. Many companies are talking about these three letters but none of them have spelled out exactly what it means to measure—properly and effectively—their Environmental, Social, and Governance activities. The herculean challenges of attempting to do so prompted Jennifer Howard-Grenville, the Diageo Professor of Organization Studies at the Cambridge Judge Business School, University of Cambridge, to publish a smart piece in *HBR* entitled, “ESG Impact Is Hard to Measure—But It's Not Impossible.” That article brought her to *The Resonance Test* to discuss with Elaina Shekhter, EPAM's Chief Marketing and Strategy Officer and SVP, the nuances and challenges here. Howard-Grenville says that businesses are increasingly recognizing that “sustainability is absolutely core to their strategy; you cannot execute a strategy in the 21st century in any business without understanding, sustainability.” Figuring out how to manage this will require acknowledging the hubris in conventional measurement plans and taking a more systems-thinking approach. This is no mean feat, as Howard-Grenville suggests. “We live in a paradoxical world—we need short-term results, but we need to orient to the long term,” she says. “We're *never* going to break down that tension. We need to live with it. We need to move back and forth with it. We need to be okay with it and we need to understand it's difficult.” Press the play button and listen to some frank and thoughtful remarks about trying to take the true measure of ESG.
