Climate Coaching: A Path to Environmental Action with guest, Don Maruska

Send us a textWhat if addressing climate change could be joyful rather than overwhelming? Master Certified Coach Don Maruska reveals a revolutionary approach that transforms climate action from a fear-driven burden into an energizing opportunity aligned with what people naturally love doing.Drawing from his book "Solve Climate Change Now: Do What You Love for a Healthy Planet," Maruska explains why traditional climate messaging often fails: fear works only as a short-term motivator before leading to burnout. Instead, he offers a coach-centered "attraction model" that helps clients identify their unique "climate sweet spot" – where personal passion meets meaningful environmental impact. The conversation explores Maruska's Triple A framework (Awareness, Action, and Advocacy) that accommodates different personality types and preferences. Some individuals thrive in direct action like community gardening, while others excel at boosting awareness or advocating for policy change. The beauty lies in starting anywhere within this circle – one engagement naturally leads to expanding interests across all three domains.Maruska directly addresses a common coaching dilemma: should we bring up climate issues if clients don't explicitly request them? He makes a compelling case that raising climate consciousness serves clients' best interests by helping them meet growing consumer expectations, boost employee engagement, and align with younger generations' values. Far from imposing an agenda, climate coaching represents a strategic advantage worth exploring. Most encouraging is Maruska's emphasis on how individual actions multiply. Research shows social movements need only 3.5-25% participation to create tipping points, and simple daily choices around food waste and transportation can collectively save billions of pounds of greenhouse gases. As he wisely notes, "We can't wait for leaders to start the parade – we need to start marching so they'll run to the front."Ready to transform how you approach climate conversations with clients? In this Convo of Flanigan's Eco-Logic, Ted speaks with Janet Irizarry, Founder of My Mindful Kitchen, an innovative course designed to reduce food waste, connect families, and foster sustainability. As a mindful foodie, a seasoned restaurateur and entrepreneur, and influencer, Janet combines all of her passions: food, education and course design, raising children, and protecting the environment, to teach children valuable lessons about mindfulness, sustainability, and community, while also strengthening familial bonds. Janet is also the Founder of Hudson Valley EATS, a bimonthly column that she started several years ago to highlight food entrepreneurs and restaurant owners in the Hudson Valley. However, during the pandemic, she shifted its focus to raise money and raise awareness for sustainability and hunger relief organizations in the area. She decided to use the platform to ensure that "Everyone EATS" in the Hudson Valley, and that has been the main focus ever since. She and Ted dig into the My Mindful Kitchen (MMK) Method, which offers practical solutions to household food waste, addressing a critical issue contributing to climate change. Aligned with the EPA's Wasted Food Scale, Janet explains that the program focuses on preventing waste before it starts, encouraging mindful consumption, and making sustainability an easy part of everyday life. In her course, she touches on healthy eating and cooking, though the core of the program is equipping families with the tools to tackle common challenges—like overbuying, disorganization, and poor planning—and create meaningful, positive change.Janet concludes by sharing that the course launched on January 2nd, and her goal is to help families recognize that food choices matter—not just for physical health, but also for emotional well-being, the health of others, and the planet. By fostering this awareness, families can transform unpleasant feelings about big issues like inflation, political uncertainty, and climate change into a sense of empowerment. She believes that each family and individual has the power to make a significant difference in shaping a better future.

We are thrilled to introduce our guest, singer, songwriter and author, Alex Woodard. Alex has toured nationally behind several critically acclaimed albums, earning a few prestigious industry nods while sharing the stage with some of his heroes.  His most recent release, Ordinary Soil, written in collaboration with triple-board certified MD turned regenerative agriculture warrior Zach Bush, follows a generational farming family haunted by a ghost from the past. Amongst early endorsers is Woody Harrelson, who offered "Ordinary Soil brings to haunting life the desperate realities of the American heartland, but also offers a glimpse into a better future... a call to action for all of us.” Alex lives with four horses, two dogs, two chickens, and two beautiful humans on a small ranch near the California coast. In this conversation we dive into:  How our current conventional farming system is damaging our soil. Why it's important to examine our relationship with the earth and the environment and to pay close attention to what we put into our bodies. How as a society, we have become deeply disconnected from nature, leading to the degradation of our soil and food systems. How and what action to take today. Don't wait until it's convenient or we have more time. How to improve soil health, which will ultimately improve the health of our planet and all human beings on this earth. In 2023, after receiving a transformational gift from the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration, NETWORK Lobby for Catholic Social Justice was finally able to begin working on an issue they'd been feeling called to for a long time: climate justice. That gift came to fruition a few months ago with the hiring of a full-time climate lobbyist: Drake Starling, a Cuban-American Miami native with a background in international environmental law. Having worked in a global context, Starling is clear on the urgency of transitioning away from fossil fuels. “If your bathtub is overflowing, you're not going to get a mop,” he says. “Transitioning away from fossil fuels is turning off the bathroom spigot.” Drake joins his colleagues on this episode of Just Politics to share more about his own story and Catholic social justice commitments, the biggest challenges and possibilities he sees in climate advocacy, and what gives him hope in the work to save the planet. For starters, he says, we should “try to start making everyone aware that climate change legislation equals good jobs.” NETWORK Advocates is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to advancing the principles of Catholic social justice and does not endorse or oppose any candidate or party in the upcoming election. Enjoy this episode? Please share it with at least ONE friend who you think needs to hear it! What if the people who are “fighting climate change” are actually just manipulating the climate? How does mmWave technology relate to weather modification? Who is spraying our skies and how can we stop it. Alec is joined by former Nevada City Mayor Reinette Senum to discuss all of this and more.  In 1994, Reinette Senum became the first woman to cross Alaska alone. During this isolated winter solo trek, which she filmed for National Geographic, she learned the power of community. Ultimately, lessons learned along the trail would catalyze her community work later in life. For the last 20 years, Reinette has applied many lessons learned along the trail and focused on building her hometown of Nevada City, California, as a more prosperous and resilient community. Through risk assessment, public outreach, and a daily hands-on/hard work ethic, she has supported Nevada City and her surrounding areas to prepare for a much more challenging and unpredictable future as a council member, mayor, and community activist. During the summer of 2020, she stepped down from her third term on the city council because of the Covid-lies she witnessed within her local government.  She was the only elected official to initially and publicly call out California Governor Newsom for his illegal statewide mask mandate. During this, she saw a deep need for leadership at a much larger scale than she could provide in her little town. She ran for California Governor in the 2022 primaries with no party affiliation. Reinette has made it her business to call out corruption around 5G, geoengineering, government, and the Covid-lies, to name a few -- and most recently by launching a legal fund fundraiser that you can find on SaveOurSkies.org to help pursue the biggest geoengineering perpetrators in America: https://www.saveourskies.org In this episode Alec and Reinette cover: – The history of weather manipulation – The different forms of geoengineering and weather modification – How to read the weather; when and how jet-exhaust cirrus clouds are made – who is spraying our skies – How to test your own rain water/snow. – What Save Our Skies (SOS) is working on – how we can stop geoengineering Check out Sabrina Wallace's work, as mentioned by Alec and Reinette during the episode: https://odysee.com/@psinergy:f The Way Forward podcast is sponsored by: ORGANIC MUSCLE: Organic Muscle is revolutionizing sports nutrition by exclusively utilizing non-GMO ingredients from USDA Organic farms. I'm producer & host Michael LeBlanc, and this podcast is produced in conjunction with the Retail Council of Canada. In this episode, meet Muhammad Mohamedy, General Manager of Healthy Planet Canada, who shares with me the origin story and incredible trajectory of a retail company thriving in the health and wellness retail space, recently adding four new stores and ambitious growth and expansion plans.  We talk about the keys to success for retailers to experience this kind of growth, find their way to a differentiated assortment in a crowded category, and stay one step ahead of the marketplace and big-picture consumer trends. About Muhammad Muhammad began his journey in the company's warehouse during high school and worked his way up to the sales floor. After obtaining a BBA from York University and gaining experience in the financial service sector, he returned to Healthy Planet. With a goal of expanding to "100 stores in 10 years," Muhammad prioritizes investing in his team as a means to achieve success. Through his bottom-up approach over the past 17 years, Healthy Planet has experienced remarkable growth. From its humble beginnings as a small kiosk on the Danforth in Toronto, selling bulk foods and supplements, the company has evolved into one of Canada's fastest-growing health and wellness retail chains. Presently, it operates 33 physical stores and an online platform, serving customers nationwide. About Michael Michael is the Founder & President of M.E. LeBlanc & Company Inc. and a Senior Advisor to Retail Council of Canada and the Bank of Canada as part of his advisory and consulting practice. Jane Goodall, Ph.D., DBE talks about all this and more in this episode of Unfolding Maps. She also reflects on her earliest animal-related childhood memories, explains what growing up during World War II taught her for life, and explains some of the biggest challenges we humans face right now – and where possible solutions lie. We live our lives, trying to maintain the status quo, but our status quo is leading to suffering and destruction. There is nothing that is in our lives that is not touched today by global climate change. The homes we build and live in, our transportation, the weather we experience every day, the clothes we wear, the trash we discard, the fuel that powers our heat, lights and automobiles, the food we choose to eat, how our cities, towns and buildings are designed…there is nothing that isn't touched by the state of our planet today. Humans are changing the climate, and how we cope with these changes says a tremendous amount about our relationship to life on planet Earth. But wait! There are possibilities, and there are solutions! They start with us, and the changes that come from hope, not fear. One of our most effective tools for improving planetary health is the food we choose to eat. In environmental terms, a vegetarian diet is great and a vegan diet is even better. However, imagining that the bulk of the population will willingly shift to a vegan diet over the next few years seems pretty unlikely (to put it mildly). So, where does that leave us? In today's episode, we're joined by Eat the Change co-founder Seth Goldman to advocate for a plant-based approach to food and diet. In a plant-based model, vegetables, fruits, fungi, and legumes are the key players - but there's not a single food group that's entirely off-limits. Erin is the Executive Director of the non-profit Ecosystem Restoration Camps in the USA. It is under the umbrella of psycho-politics that Robert welcomes Erin to the show because she represents it so well. Ecosystem restoration and better land management practices are one of the top tools that we have in our tool belt, anywhere around the world, to respond to climate change. These practices are relatively inexpensive and generally underfunded, but fortunately for our planet, gaining in recognition. The world needs us to take action and think about our potential to respond from a protective place toward the world. We are not going to achieve a healthy planet without asking how we can contribute in small or large ways, whichever is viable for us. Hear Erin's friendly nature and glimpse her unique perspective on taking care of nature through regenerative land management, ecosystem restoration, and good old-fashioned getting your hands dirty. Working outside in the service of nature is something that often gets to the core of who we are. It can make us feel better and more relaxed. It can make us feel empowered and motivated and a part of something larger than ourselves. Finding a way to get involved and be able to take action is part of unlocking our contribution to our community and the space we inhabit here on earth. Robert invites you to reflect on, what is my role? We have the opportunity to contribute in the smallest of ways to collectively have a huge impact. If you work in the food industry, you need to start swotting up on this subject area: **Regenerative Agriculture** (Follow Brand Growth Heroes on Instagram, Tiktok, Linkedin)Wildfarmed is a regenerative food brand bringing together farmers, food businesses and consumers to build the largest soil and biodiversity restoration programme on British arable land. But uniquely, they are making delicious food grown in healthy soils widely available to the high street customer, whilst guaranteeing a stable price committed to the farmer who makes the transition to regenerative practices.Fiona speaks to Edd Lees, who along with Andy Cato of Groove Armada and George Lamb, is one of the co-founders of this revolutionary new business. Founded in 2018, Wildfarmed's overriding premise is to 'fix the planet by fixing food'. Wildfarmed prioritises soil health and never uses pesticides, herbicides or fungicides, so the land is left rich for future harvests. This in turn ensures that any Wildfarmed loaf of bread will always be chemical-free and nutrient-dense. There are now 40 farmers growing under contract with Wildfarmed (with an ever-growing waitlist), representing a staggering 1% of British arable land.Wildfarmed's first ever bakery partner was Jolene in Newington Green, London and soon Pizza Pilgrims, HIDE, Twelve Triangles, all joined the movement. They're now up to a total of nearly 230 customers who bake, cook and educate consumers through using Wildfarmed flour. If you work in the food industry, how can you engage with regenerative farming practices?Find out more about Wildfarmed here. and on mob hereGet Fiona on your brand team here: The Growth Strategy Programme and Fiona Fitz ConsultingDon't miss further episodes! This week on the podcast, I am joined by Louise and Jacqueline Wilkie. Jackie and Louise made the discovery of fulvic acid, two sisters whose mother was fighting the effects of radiation and chemotherapy. The Wilkie's always preferred homeopathic, natural alternatives to traditional methods of supporting people's health, so they began to search for a remedy to assist their mother's recovery. Through the sister's own research, they discovered that fulvic acid had numerous health benefits to help ease the negative effects of their mother's condition. They were particularly excited with their mother's positive response to it. Upon attending a trade show in 2010 they decided to bottle the fulvic acid formula as a functional water to see what kind of a response they might get - making no claims. Rather than hide the fact that the water became black, the sisters embraced it and the crowds went wild… and that was the birth of BLK. Louise and Jackie were brought up in a farm to table environment long before it became popular. Beneficial alternative foods have always been of interest so when they opened their manufacturing plant it was a natural step for them to embrace organic, lifestyle products. With Jackie's sales/business experience and Louise's R&D interests, the two focused on bringing to market Healthy Foods for a Healthy Lifestyle that support a Healthy Planet. On this episode we talk about creating BLK after their mother's cancer diagnosis, the benefits of fulvic acid and its detoxification properties. We also discuss why detoxing our bodies are so critical in the prevention of disease, how the trace minerals, amino acids, and electrolytes, found in BLK water help to optimize our health, and so much more! In this episode, I'm revisiting a topic I covered waaay back in Episode 11: “How Does Beef Fit Into Our Diet and a Healthy Planet”. To me, this topic is still confusing since many experts seem to have differing opinions and approaches. Enter registered dietitian extraordinaire Kate Geagan, the Co-Founder of Food and Planet. Kate and I talk about how current food systems are not sustainable, the environmental impacts of plant vs. animal diets, and is it even possible to eat beef without feeling guilty about its impact on our planet?  P.S. Both Kate and I confess to being beef eaters!
