Over the last couple of years since moving to Austin I have watched The Loop's community continue to grow and welcome runners from all backgrounds. Whether you run a 6 minute mile, or a 20 minute mile, it doesn't matter, there is a place for you. As a result, my curiosity grew as to why this brand started, and how it came to be. Our guest today has an amazing story of becoming involved in agriscience research, not limiting his research interests to one aspect of agriculture and of doing good in the community.  He also has an amazing story of legacy.  Ryan Hess is part of the Stephenville FFA Chapter, and as an American Star Finalist in Agriscience Research he not only is the third finalist from Texas in three years, but he is the third finalist from Stephenville High School in three years! As if his contributions and findings in research were not enough, Ryan has been very involved in both the FFA and his community.  He was pivotal in the town of Stephenville in getting funding for and installation of calisthenics equipment along their river trail.  Also, he has served in many officer roles over the years, including that of Texas State Officer. Ryan is not studying Ag Communications at Texas Tech University, along with his preceding American Star Finalists from Stephenville High School.  He hopes to continue his research in the area of social interaction and find new and better ways to share the message of agriculture with the world. Intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) is a devastating neurosurgical condition associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality. It can occur as the result of several pathologies and typically presents with mental status changes, neurologic deficits, seizures, headaches, and decreased Glasgow Coma Scale score. These patients are often treated with placement of an external ventricular drain, which helps decrease the clot burden; however, they commonly clot off leading to multiple exchanges. Dr. Ryan Hess, neurosurgeon form Buffalo General Hospital presents a case review in which drainage, irrigation, and fibrinolytic (DRIFT) therapy using IRRAflow® (IRRAS) irrigating catheter was used to treat a patient with severe IVH secondary to aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage. Intracranial abscesses are rare lesions with an incidence estimated at 1500-2500 cases per year in the United States. Widespread use of neuroimaging has led to rapid diagnosis, decreasing the mortality rate from 40-50% to approximately 20. Treatment options include systemic antibiotic therapy, needle aspiration through a burr hole, and open craniotomy for excision. The recently introduced IRRAflow self-irrigating catheter system has been used to treat subdural hematomas and intraventricular hemorrhages although research into other applications for this technology is still ongoing. Despite the natural beauty of Gilbert’s home country, Burundi has had a history of conflict between the Tutsi and Hutu tribes, which Gilbert describes in detail. This turmoil reached a peak on a day Gilbert will never forget, a day he barely escaped with his life. In Part I of our interview with Gilbert, he talks about growing up in Burundi and how running was a part of everyday life. He also describes how he began to run competitively in high school.
