It's not uncommon for someone to set out on a path they really believe in, or pursue the path that grueling years of hard work earned them a degree in. It's also not out of the ordinary for a certain eye-opening life experience to cause an individual to want to change course in pursuit of a different passion, lifestyle or outcome. That was the case for today's Success is Subjective guest, John Morris. After undergraduate studies at Ohio Wesleyan University and completing his MBA from Penn State's Smeal College of Business, John felt pretty confident of the future that was unfolding in front of him. After a successful eight year career as a market maker, trading options on the floor of the Philadelphia Eagle stock exchange, John had a personal experience which propelled him onto a completely different path altogether. Lean in is as he shares what that defining experience was, and how he is now using it to help dozens of individuals all across America. John's Resources:Reach AftercareReach NeurofeedbackConnect with Joanna Lilley  Therapeutic Consulting AssociationLilley Consulting WebsiteLilley Consulting on Facebook Lilley Consulting on YouTubeEmail joanna@lilleyconsulting.com#TherapeuticConsulting #LilleyConsulting #Successful #YoungAdults #TherapeuticPrograms #Therapy #MentalHealthMatters #Podcast #PodcastCommunity #StudentMentalHealth #TheJourney #SuccessIsSubjectivePodcast #TheUnpavedRoad #PFCAudioVideo #SobrietyRocks #SoberLiving #Intervention #Neurofeedback #SobrietyJourney #AddictionRecovery #AddictionAwareness

Today our host dive deep into a topic that's at the intersection of business ethics, the environment, and social responsibility – Environmental, Social, and Governance, or ESG, standards in supply chain management. In today's globalized world, supply chains are the lifeblood of business operations, connecting products and services to consumers worldwide. But the question we're asking today is this: How can businesses ensure that their supply chains not only deliver profits but also uphold their ethical and environmental responsibilities? We are joined by Sophia Schuster, a recent MBA and Master's in Supply Chain Management graduate of the Penn State Smeal College of Business. About Sophia Schuster, who holds an MBA and a Master's in Supply Chain Management from Penn State's Smeal College of Business, has a diverse background in the retail and education sector. Propelled by a desire to understand the impact of the way we communicate, combined with her personal interest in sustainability topics, Sophia sought to look more closely at firm ESG behavior and how that behavior is conveyed to the public. In her Master's paper, Sophia explored the importance of procurement in setting and upholding firm ESG standards and the saturated market of ESG ratings indices that firms use to gauge their progress, between which is a misalignment that calls into question the value of the ESG ratings industry to firms' internal and external stakeholders.

This week, Matt speaks with real estate leader Walt Rakowich, former CEO of Prologis and author of the new book, Transfluence: How to Lead with Transformative Influence in Today's Climates of Change. In the interview, Walt tells his career story, interspersed with leadership lessons along the way. Walt's true crucible as a leader came first when he was President and COO of Prologis and he found himself unaligned with the style and decision making of the CEO, leading to Walt's resignation from the firm…and then rejoining the firm, just months later, to restructure and rebuild the business after a crash that he had essentially foreseen. In our conversation, Walt discusses these lessons in leadership but we certainly recommend that you take a deep dive into his philosophy and practice of servant leadership in Transfluence.Prologis is a NYSE company and a member of the S&P 500. Prologis is a leading provider of distribution facilities and services with over $50 billion in assets and operations in the Americas, Europe and Asia. Walt was Co-CEO of Prologis and member of the Board of Directors from June 2011 through December 2012. He was CEO of Prologis from November 2008 through June 2011. He was a member of the Prologis Board of Trustees from January 2005 through June 2011.Prior to becoming CEO, Walt was the President and Chief Operating Officer of Prologis from January 2005 through November 2008. He joined Prologis in 1994. From December 1998 to January 2005, he served as Managing Director and Chief Financial Officer for Prologis. Prior to this position, Walt was the Senior Vice President/Director of the company's Mid-Atlantic region where he was responsible for expanding the reach of Prologis to the leading logistics markets in the Midwest and Atlantic states.Prior to joining Prologis, Walt spent nine years as a partner and principal with real estate provider Trammell Crow Company in Los Angeles. Before that, he was a senior audit and tax consultant for Price Waterhouse in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Walt received his M.B.A. from Harvard Business School and his B.S., with distinction, in Accounting from The Pennsylvania State University.Walt currently serves on the board of directors of Host Hotels & Resorts, where he is the company's audit committee chairman and member of the governance committee; Iron Mountain Inc., where he is chairman of the audit committee and member of the governance and investment committees; and Ventas Inc., where he is chairman of the audit committee. All three are companies listed in the S&P 500. He also serves on the advisory council of Gender Fair. He has served as a member of the executive committee and the board of governors for the National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts (NAREIT), the primary industry group for REITs in the United States.Walt was appointed to The Pennsylvania State University Board of Trustees in 2014 and serves as chairman of the university board's audit and risk committee. In 2010, the Penn State Alumni Association named Walt a Penn State Alumni Fellow, a lifetime designation and the highest award given by the association, recognizing outstanding professional achievement. He also has served on the real estate advisory boards of the Smeal College of Business at Penn State, The Owen Graduate School of Management at Vanderbilt University and The Kellogg Graduate school of Management. In addition, he served on the Global Leadership Council at Colorado State University.Walt currently serves as chairman of the board of Colorado UpLift and is a member of the board of the Alliance for School Choice in Education (ACE) and of PIVOT, three non-profits focused on educating at risk children in the inner city.About TransfluenceWalt Rakowich brings a real-world perspective to leadership that's based on experience, not just theory. Walt was CEO of Prologis, the world's largest owner of industrial warehouses and a critical partner to companies distributing products throughout the global supply chain. The company was near bankruptcy when Walt took over at the height of the Great Recession. While leading Prologis back to prominence, and in the years since, Walt realized leaders today must lean into timeless values and principles, but with a fresh perspective on the new realities of our leadership climates. The modern leadership environment exists at the convergence of three distinct and dynamic climates: the climates of access, diversity, and acceleration. On their own or in the aggregate, these climates produce significant opportunities and tensions that will challenge leaders for generations. With a fundamental understanding of these climates, leaders develop a selfless approach that withstands the toughest storms.Transfluence shows leaders how they can have transformative influence by overcoming their fears and pride, building transparency into their leadership, developing a strong core of authentic values, and passionately pursuing a meaningful purpose. When leaders do this, they seize opportunities, embrace challenges, and make their organizations and communities greater than ever. Learn more or order Transfluence here.

Ken Pasch brings over 30 years experience in revolutionizing leader development within a broad range of organizations, including the U.S. Military, Johnson & Johnson, the American College of Healthcare Executives, and the Pennsylvania Department of Health. He is the founder of KiVisions, Inc., which advises good people on how to become great leaders, and serves as faculty in executive education at the Smeal College of Business at Penn State University. Pasch is a retired Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Air Force, where he served proudly and with distinction. ----- Ken Pasch won the lottery decades ago, the draft lottery that took him to the jungles of Vietnam. After returning from his service in the army, he pondered how successful organizations get off the ground and reach their destination. The author of the recently published On Course: Become a Great Leader and Soar likened the process to that of an airplane. Choose a destination, prepare to get there, and watch out for winds of resistance that might take you off course and forces that might drag you down. In this episode, Ken Pasch discusses some of the themes from his book. He reminds us that leaders must possess a proper mindset and be aware of the impacts their actions have on others. He tells us that we should become an “ACE.” The “A” stands for the abundance in leadership we should exhibit. The “C” refers to the concentration we must focus upon our priorities, while the “E” reminds us to pursue our passion and purpose earnestly. Effective leaders bring about change through their mindsets, efforts, and willingness to accept feedback. They ensure that their firms have an excellent onboarding process in place that sets people up for success and establishes the best tone. Throughout this podcast, Ken Pasch shares a wealth of helpful advice about the value that high-quality leadership brings to an organization. Please enjoy this program! I have a question for you: What would it be like to have a bank balance with 9 zeros? A billion dollars? What does it take to reach that amount? Our guest today, Mitch Cohen, co-wrote a book answering that question. It’s called The Self-Made Billionaire Effect. There are more billionaires walking the planet today than ever before. Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, Sara Blakely. According to Forbes, 2017 was a record year with the number of billionaires climbing 13% to 2,043. And 56 of them are under the age of 40! But there are only about 800 or so self-made billionaires, according to Mitch. He shares some of the characteristics of these wealthy individuals including an empathetic imagination and patient urgency (sounds conflicting, right?) Mitch has spent over 30 years in the financial industry. He is a retired Vice-Chairman at PricewaterhouseCoopers, where he served as a partner for over 20 years. It was there that he got the opportunity to meet and analyze the work and mindsets of some of the richest people. I also want to highlight that Mitch is a fellow Penn State alumni and he and I both serve on the Board of Visitors at the Smeal College of Business there.  Fun Fact: Mitch was a Human of New York profile...You know, those incredibly candid portraits of New Yorkers doing random things with some of the most captivating and moving captions. The challenges and barriers that women face in both entering into and performing effectively in leadership roles have been widely documented across many research domains.  In this seminar Aparna Joshi takes a look at this issue from the perspective of both women and men in leadership roles. First, she unpacks conditions under which women leaders can be effective change agents in highly male-dominated settings. Based on a sixteen- year longitudinal data set of women legislators in the US Congress she examines how the content of bills can prime the legitimacy of women in leader roles and predict their success in passing bills over the course of their tenures.  Second, shifting the focus on men in leadership roles, she also problematizes the “think manager think male” paradigm that has been applied extensively to understand barriers faced by women, from the perspective of men. Based on a sample of Fortune 500 male CEOs she examines the consequences for firm performance and CEO pay among men who subscribe (or not) to masculine stereotypes.  Through these two studies she aims at highlighting new ways of thinking about gender and leadership effectiveness.   Aparna Joshi, Arnold Family Professor of Management, Smeal College of Management, Penn State University
