On this episode of the California Now Podcast, host Soterios Johnson dives into the best of Sacramento's food, culture, and outdoor scene with three expert insiders. First up, Johnson is joined by Benjy Egel, the food and drinks writer for The Sacramento Bee. Egel explains how the area's agricultural abundance helps fuel its thriving farm-to-fork dining scene. “So much of the U.S.'s produce comes from the Sacramento region and the Central Valley as a whole, and so we have this wealth of tomatoes and asparagus and even caviar here in the region,” says Egel. He then dives into where to grab some local good eats, from neighborhood favorites in Little Saigon to Michelin-starred joints in Midtown. Next, Johnson is joined by Ashley Shult Langdon, author of Mildly Scenic, a trail guide to Sacramento's Lower American River. The outdoor enthusiast and longtime Sacramentan describes what aspects of the river continue to surprise and delight. “Just within a 10-minute walk from the city, you can feel like you're out in the wilderness,” says Langdon. Langdon gets into her favorite spots and the family activities that visitors can enjoy along the lower half of the American River.    Last, Johnson talks arts and culture with Hillary Louise Johnson of Sactown Magazine. The seasoned writer discusses Sacramento's growing creative landscape. “There's such a density of public art [in Midtown], in part because Sacramento's pretty mural-crazy,” says Johnson. She then goes on a culture-fueled walking tour throughout the city's artsy neighborhoods with stops for coffee and shopping along the way.

In a move confusing nearly every Sacramentan, City Attorney Susana Alcala Wood has announced that Sacramento City Council members are, in fact, still in charge of the districts they ran before redistricting last December, adding major implications to a recall push by reactionaries against District 4 Councilmember Katie Valenzuela. The new districts will not go into effect until their upcoming elections in 2022 and 2024.   So what does that mean for an area like East Sacramento, which will technically not have representation until 2024 after the next District 4 election? And who can now participate in the Valenzuela recall? If it makes the ballot this year, will Land Park residents be able to vote both in the District 7 election (where they will subsequently be represented) AND the recall? If so, why?   We spoke with some of the state's top redistricting experts to get the inside scoop.   We also discuss the new homelessness ballot measure that City Council was coerced into putting into play by local business leaders, with little notice to the community (and just days after the biggest mass shooting the region has seen in the modern era).   Yousef Baig outlined just how disgusting this was last week, while councilmembers Katie Valenzuela and Mai Vang wrote an op-ed explaining the problems with this move.   Thanks for listening, defund the police and, as always: Twitter: @youknowkempa, @ShanNDSTevens, @Flojaune, @guillotine4you Support us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/voicesrivercity   Sacramentans can hear us on 103.1 KUTZ Tuesdays at 5 pm and again Wednesdays at 8 am. She has been performing for many years in all the local "hot spots". Lloy also has been recognized for her dynamic performance during the annual California State Fair. No matter where you may have heard this lady, you can bet she has a voice you will never forget.   This native Sacramentan's first recording was a song “Sooner or Later” which was the number 2 song on an album for a charity, “MADD” (Mother's Against Drunk Drivers). Critic Mick Martin wrote: “The most impressive of these is Colleen Lloy whose “Sooner or Later” is an absolute knockout. If this fine singer isn't signed by a major label, there's no justice in the music world.” This recording brought attention to City Kidd's manager who asked Lloy to join the Band City Kidd and played with the original members now known as Tesla.   Lloy over her musical career has entered and won many music competitions one of which was the Jimmy Dean/True Value Hardware Music Competition where she won first place in Northern California which ultimately brought her to Tennessee.   Lloy, an award-winning singer/songwriter fell in love with the musical city and decided to move to Nashville, TN to pursue her singing and songwriting career in 1999. Like many artists, she has a story of courage and stamina where she quit her job, sold everything she owned, and on a wing and prayer moved to Nashville. It did not take long for the industry to realize this lady has major chemistry and charisma on and off stage. Coined the “chameleon” by many, she proves she has an unusual style of singing able to cover any type of music with ease.  She also has appearances on the popular television show “Nashville” as an extra until she can set more time aside for other roles.   2000 was a difficult year for Lloy who lost her brother. She went into the studio and recorded “Life Challenges” and released the song “Can You Hear” to the radio. It charted 26 on the Christian Country Music Charts and is receiving great airplay in many countries.   Decatur Celebration- "The best description of Colleen Lloy is a chameleon." Sacramento critic, Mick Martin writes: "The most impressive of these is Colleen Lloy whose "Sooner or Later" is an absolute knockout. If this fine singer isn't signed by a major label, there's no justice in the music world." Nashville Music Guide Critic Brad Fisher gives Lloy's "Life Challenges" CD a five-star rating and writes: "This ten-song CD is an emotional roller coaster that runs the gambit of love. The tunes were either written or co-written by Lloy who has a beautiful set of pipes which she shows off on this album."   Lloy has devoted her life in giving back to worthy causes that touch her soul. Some of those include the American Red Cross, Susan G. Komen for the Cure to name a few. She is also an advocate of our U.S Military and veterans and has written several military songs to share with the soldiers and their families.    Lloy has literally played all over the U.S. and abroad and returned from two USO shows in Italy. She is a frequent guest at the nationally known Bluebird Café, has done television and radio broadcasts and has opened up for artists like Billy Dean, Paul Overstreet, John Berry, Lee Greenwood, George Jones, Billy Ray Cyrus, Tanya Tucker, John Anderson and many others. Lloy had the rare privilege of interviewing Mr. B.B. King for a proposed television show which she indicates is the highlight of her music career thus far. Lloy recently returned from Maui performing with Mick Fleetwood.    In any event, whether you see her on a big stage or a small quiet room tucked away in her favorite clubs, we are quite sure you have not heard the last from Colleen Lloy. Today on our podcast we speak with two people from a nonprofit organization that facilitates the stewardship of urban trees in a large city, including a program that facilitates the use of the wood from trees that have to be removed from around the city because of disease, end-of-it’s lifecycle or proximity to structures, etc. Jennifer Szeliga and Jonathan Gibbs from the Sacramento Tree Foundation work for the Urban Wood Rescue program in Sacramento, CA. Sacramento Tree Foundation works on educating Sacramentans on how to plant and care for trees and tell the story of how trees make our communities livable and lovable. Jennifer is the Director of Urban Wood Rescue program and has worked there for 5 years and while helping to write a new chapter in the story of urban trees to make sure they continue benefitting the community even after they’re removed. Jonathan Gibbs, a native Sacramentan is an Urban Wood Technician working directly for the Urban Wood Rescue program as well. He oversees yard handling of intakes, inventory, milling, drying wood, and essential support for numerous aspects of the operation. When he’s not working with the Urban Wood Rescue program, he and his wife enjoy the local food scene, music, renovating their new house, fixing cars and going to car events. This nonprofit is an awesome resource for Sacramento and excellent example of what other cities might want to consider as well.

Welcome to another edition of Po Politickin. In this episode, we politick with N-Pire Da Great. Hailing from Sacramento, California, N-Pire Da Great was born Nashua Hamilton during the era of the growing Crypts and Bloods gang wars, but also during burgeoning new music genre called hip-hop/rap. Raised in a single-father household due to the incarceration of his mother for most of his life, N-Pire’s ears were opened to the emerging music form through the sounds of Run-DMC and LL Cool J, but the sounds of 90s hip-hop heavyweights Nas, Tupac, Mobb Deep, and Tribe Called Quest is what furthered progressed his ear. However, it wasn’t until high school when he began to take the art form seriously as a career. Local labels were courting the teen emcee, and when N-Pire was 21, even more validation came in the form of props from rap veteran Kurupt. “I was in a studio in L.A recording a song with a producer I was working with at the time, and Kurupt walked in. I had actually stepped out of the studio to smoke and came back in and I could hear him say ‘Yo, who’s this rapping? Who’s he signed to?’ And when I actually walked in and they pointed to me, I felt like, real small standing next to him. He was just like ‘Yo, you need to keep rockin, this is ill!’ He wanted to sign me at the time, but it didn’t work out. But we still keep in contact to this day.” Nothing like a co-sign from a legend! And from then, it was on! After college, the N-Pire was producing for the likes of fellow Sacramentan emcee Brotha Lynch Hung, Main Attrakionz, Willie the Kid, Freeway, Kurupt, and The Federation. Two mixtapes also followed, 2011’s Everybody Hates Nash and 2013’s Road 2 LND, which acts a prequel to his forthcoming LP Legends Never Die. If you think you’ll get a one-track rapper with N-Pire, think again. He calls his music “reality rap,” offering different perspectives in regards to society’s problems, even offering solutions, like on songs “The One,” “11-9,” and “Silence.” But N-Pire can party with the rest of them on records such as “G-Shit” and “Get Active.” For those who claim that hip-hop is dead, wait until July 16, 2013 to witness how N-Pire Da Great is keeping great hip-hop music alive with his debut LP Legends Never Die.
