Rebecca Lyn Gold has been writing since the age of 6 when she found a floral cloth covered 5-year diary (with a lock and key) in her Christmas stocking. She is now an author, editor, writing coach and the founder of Yogic Writing-- a practice that utilizes the philosophies and disciplines of yoga, meditation and journaling for writers of all levels to break through resistance, uncover memories, and find story nuggets buried within. Her books include: "Till There Was You: An Adoption Expectancy Journal," "A Wizard Called Woz: a biography of Stephen Wozniak," "That's Why We're Here: Stories from passionate James Taylor fans," "How To Write It Funny" with author/humorist Amy Koko, and "A Friend Named Sunny Skies: A Memoir of Trauma, Healing, and the Music of James Taylor." She is currently writing: "From Your Mat to Your Memoir: Creating a yogic writing practice to find and write your life stories." Rebecca believes that writing is a spiritual practice, much like yoga or meditation. It takes courage to forge ahead, even when you have no idea where you are going. You step on the mat, you greet the page, you meet your resistance, and then you Let. It. Go. Rebecca has 3 children (who live in 3 different states-- although she tries not to take that personally), three grandchildren, and a 4th on the way. She lives with her husband Osvaldo and their dog Brownie in Providence, Rhode Island (for now). She leads workshops, retreats and online programs using Yogic Writing as a tool for women to find and write their life stories. Rebecca has a deep connection to the music of James Taylor due to a healing she experienced through his music, and would turn to music and storytelling as a way to comfort and connect to herself when she felt depressed or lonely. Rebecca was 13 when she experienced a traumatic event that forced her to keep secrets. it's also when she discovered journaling as a tool to access her deeper feelings process her emotions, and taking back her power. Rebecca teaches her Yogic Writing Method that allows women to first connect to their body to access its deeper wisdom, and then to write from that deeper place. If 100 Women were surveyed and asked if their lives dream were to write a book that at least 85% would share the desire to tell their story through a book. Every woman has a story to tell, they just need to believe that their story is worth telling. Initially Rebecca was doing a lot of surface level writing until she discovered yoga and began combining the practices of Yoga and Writing, and what she found is that the two were beautifully suited to one another. Yogic writing helps women to break through to deeper levels of story-telling, and to stand in the center of their story as survivors and thrivers, vs, victims. Breath practices, prompts, and yoga poses are all part of her writing retreats given throughout her programs. Women who have experienced trauma ( and many of us have) are able to use this method because it's gentle and self-guided, but also very effective at moving the stuck or trapped emotion through and helps women tap into deeper insights that come through in their writing. When the pandemic started, Rebecca and many others found solace and comfort when she created a group called “The Corona Chronicles” on facebook and each day she would write a prompt and the group members could share what they had written. From your mat to your memoir is a workshop Rebecca offers a few times a year, and she keeps it to a small and intimate group so that they can share their writings with each other and get the individualized attention to their writing.
Actress and comedian Kym Whitley has been hit hard by the Covid-19 crisis. These ¨interesting times¨ have fundamentally altered her personal life as well. 2020 has brought on a profound period of evolution for this longtime TV star. She sits with us today to share perspective on personal growth in trying times. 0:40 Strengthened through Shared Struggle Like most of us, Kym Whitley has had both friends and family members affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting economic uncertainty. As a result, finding any sense of normalcy has proven a challenge. Enduring such difficult moments while retaining a creative space for he professional life requires a well-developed support network. She credits the people in her life with buoying her spirit through difficult moments despite their personal struggles, forging deeper bonds in her personal relationships. 3:34 Stop Mourning the Future It can be easy to ebb into low spirits as we imagine the grand plans we may miss out on as quarantines and travel restrictions define our times. The actress emphasizes the importance of focusing on the immediate. We can never regain a future that never was, but with careful introspection we can discover new opportunities. For her part, Kym has pursued a newfound interest in physical fitness that has seen her lose nearly 30 pounds (13.5kg) over the last 5 months. The effort even earned her an ambassadorship with Weight Watchers. 6:32 Entertaining New Possibilities With her career on stage and in Hollywood essentially frozen for the time being, the coronavirus crisis has forced her to reimagine her career. Like a true creative, she has worked to rise to the occasion with imagination. Her viral ¨Corona Chronicles¨ series has helped keep her hilarious personality on the minds of her fans, although she acknowledges that the path to profitability can be less direct. Having multiple streams of income has become paramount, even for an entertainer with such an extensive resume. 11:09 Considering ¨Cancel Culture¨ Many of Whitley´s peers have been touched by the social phenomenon of ¨cancel culture.¨ Careers can be ended in an instant due to the social media firestorm that often follows a careless or inflammatory comment made by a visible individual. In her view, while many of these instances are justified, it is important to also consider the hundreds of people that contribute to a given project. She points out that writers, crew, and support staff bear the brunt of the backlash in the wake of a cancellation, as their jobs may never be replaced. 19:39 The Power of a Platform Right or wrong, society often looks to its most visible members for guidance. These individuals, and the platforms they have, have tremendous potential to foment change. However, they also come with great responsibility, and this demands that they are handled with care. A veteran comic, Whitley speaks on public pressures for celebrity activism, and how it can sometimes result in individuals speaking out when they may have no standing to do so. Silence, in her view, can be as valid a form of participation as any hashtag. 23:36 Gently Preserving History History, by definition, includes aspects that may be less than palatable when viewed through modern eyes. The events of 2020 have drawn this concept into focus, as we wrestle with a shared question: which relics of the past are still appropriate for the general public today? Here, Kym takes time to outline her opinion, including exploring the role of symbols in storytelling. She also takes on the more problematic realities of past eras in entertainment, balancing them with an appreciation of how far we have come as a society. We're in the midst of a global health scare, and some segments of the population seem to be in denial. It feels like they're insisting that we all stay “positive,” smiling, cheerful and upbeat at all times, despite growing mortality numbers, and frankly, the fear that we might be personally affected by Covid-19. The sisters cry foul, and say no to toxic positivity. Plus: The pandemic has caused pandemonium on so many levels. Physically, logistically, and - of course - emotionally. A lot of people are dealing with information overload and struggling with feelings of overwhelm. Listen in as the sisters provide tips for making it all more manageable. The beauty is in the details. The Covid-19 lockdown seems to have no end in sight, and everyone is doing their best to adjust. For many people who are lucky to still have a job, this means that working remotely is the new normal. It's great to only have to commute to the living room - it's sooo comfy - but is there a risk of not being productive enough? As veterans, and strong proponents, of the WFH life, Sharon and Lisa share tips on how to make working from home work for you. The beauty is in the details. For full show notes click here. The Coronavirus pandemic is in full effect -- and so is social distancing. And extroverts around the world are struggling with self-isolation. Introverts, not so much. Most introverts that we know are upset (naturally) about the health scare, but glad that the planet is on silent mode. Sharon and Lisa talk about whether social distancing is easier for them because they're introverted, and how they're dealing with the new normal. Plus, the sisters have questions: Why are people hoarding toilet paper? Are people staying 6 feet away? Is it possible to clean everything?? Will the job market return to normal? Tune in for our inaugural episode! The beauty is in the details. For full show notes click here. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information. This is a public episode. Grace Kim is a Korean-American filmmaker and writer who uses absurdist and surrealist premises in film as a vehicle for sowing empathy. Dropping audiences into the otherworldly circumstances of her characters, she seeks to reflect to viewers their own humanity. If one is able to resonate with the loneliness of say, a man desperate for love after hearing a woman's voice on the other side of a banana phone, could human empathy not transcend arbitrary boundaries of race, gender, class, and beyond? Currently, Grace is in development for an animated TV series about climate change, The Grand Tammy, which was a second rounder for the Sundance Episodic Lab. She is a Viacom Viewfinder Program fellow and recently shadowed director/executive producer Dime Davis on the Paramount TV series Boomerang, executive produced by Lena Waithe and Halle Berry. In addition to television, Grace is a Picture Farm Directing Program fellow for female commercial directors. Grace's award-winning short films have screened at the Hamptons International Film Festival, Tall Grass Film Festival, and Sidewalk Film Festival amongst others. Her debut short Loveseat was a finalist for the Horizon Award at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival and the Loveseat script was a quarterfinalist for the Screen Craft Short Film Fund. The script for her latest project Fissura was a finalist for the Cascadia International Women's Film Festival Script Studio as well as one of the top 100 submissions for the Shift Creative Fund. Grace was also a part of Ghetto Film School's EMERGE8 semi-finalists for their inaugural emerging directors program. Her work has been supported by the NYC Women's Fund funded by the Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment and NYFA. Her upcoming projects include Heart Tick Kaboom, a short film commissioned by Atlanta Film Society for the Hartsfield-Jackson Airport which will screen on the 500 screens throughout the airport starting in April 2020 and a narrative dance film, Fissura, which is slated to shoot in September 2020 and is supported in part by the Brooklyn Arts Council. Ana lobo is a brand development manager for Altamar Brands and New York Bartender: My passion for hospitality stems from my cultural background and family. Growing up in the Midwest and the South as a first generation American from a Brazilian family, it was inherent that the best of times started with a conversation and sharing something good to eat and drink. Shortly after moving to New York to study international business and environmental conservation I became tied to hospitality and eventually started my first bar management position at the age of 21. Food and beverage ignited my curiosity to travel around the world, and so after 4 years in New York I spent the next 3 years traveling and working in Brazil, Australia, Southeast Asia and Europe. Returning to New York after my travels allowed me to see the city again with a new perspective. Working in some trailblazing and historical venues provided a closer relationship with products and ingredients, peaking my interest to move into brands. I am now proud to work with people and products that not only share my interest in quality and transparency but also mirror exciting times in the creative regeneration and environmentally conscious movements surrounding hospitality in New York.
