Join me, Kelly Brothers, as I chat with Cecily Hastings of "Inside Publications" and "Inside Sacramento" and explore her inspiring journey from Ann Arbor, Michigan, to becoming a prominent publisher in Sacramento. Cecily recounts her upbringing in a vibrant neighborhood and her multidisciplinary design education from the University of Michigan. Moving from a career in commercial interior design and office furniture sales in the San Francisco Bay Area to Sacramento, she shares the challenges of making new friends before social media and her deep involvement in local community and city government, including founding a neighborhood association to address issues at McKinley Park. Listen as Cecily discusses her transition from a design-focused professional to a community newspaper publisher in East Sacramento. Initially hired to write articles with no prior experience, Cecily's innovative business model provided free newspapers to every household and tailored a simple advertising system for small businesses. Utilizing guerrilla marketing strategies, she effectively connected local businesses with their immediate community, overcoming the challenge of Sacramento's dispersed commercial areas. This approach led to the successful establishment and growth of Inside Sacramento, which continues to thrive today. We also explore the evolution of Inside Sacramento's content focus and Cecily's dedication to advocacy and community journalism. Shifting from highlighting arts and small businesses to addressing the deteriorating state of Sacramento's budgets post-Great Recession, Cecily founded the nonprofit Friends of East Sacramento to restore local landmarks. Her publication now addresses pressing issues such as homelessness and accountability in nonprofit funding. Cecily's strategy of hiring community-engaged individuals underscores the importance of grassroots journalism and proactive citizenship, serving as an inspiring model for community-based advocacy. Now, state lawmakers want to strengthen those penalties again, but disagree over the way to do so. San Francisco Chronicle columnist Emily Hoeven breaks down the debates around reforming Prop 47. Today we're discussing a phenomenon we've noticed in recent weeks since business ghouls and their East Sacramento toadies began to publicize an ADA lawsuit against the region's unhoused community, wherein they are attempting to pit folks with disabilities against folks without homes (as if there isn't a massive overlap between the two communities). We discuss the potential effects of that, as well as another new tactic for the state to commit violence against residents who have next to nothing: Government officials are now regularly using inclement weather as a reason to push unhoused folks out of the places they've come to call home. This week, park rangers are pushing folks out of the "island" encampment in Sacramento--without offering any semblance of shelter--under the guise of public health. The crew ends the episode with Dr. Flo sharing her expertise on what it means for Californians now that state and federal COVID emergency declarations are finally coming to an end. An idea that started over a year ago is now a reality in East Sacramento. Queers And Allies Fitness Center is up and running. The idea was to create a unique and comfortable space for the LGBTQ+ community looking to get in shape. Sarah Serbic and Hayden Glenn came up with the idea after noticing that the health and fitness industry lacked places focusing on the LGBTQ community, despite their big presence in the region.
Today we discuss a couple of homelessness bills state Republicans are pushing forward, such as Roseville's Josh Hoover's push to make it illegal for just about anyone to sleep just about anywhere in a city or town in California. We also take a moment for Robin Swanson, a conservative Democratic operative from East Sacramento who is quoted in the above story, and who appears to be pushing for some truly fascist policies against our unhoused neighbors. We highly recommend a scroll through her tweets the last couple days: https://twitter.com/robin_swanson/with_replies Is Robin really a concerned mother, or is she running a public campaign to rally folks for a challenger against Sacramento's current District 4 incumbent? One cannot trust these operatives. Finally, we host a reading series on a baffling Fresno Bee editorial that tell us nothing and everything all at once. Though she will no longer be on the Sacramento City Council dais come January, District 1's Angelique Ashby (flanked by District 3's Jeff Harris and the people who led the failed recall against District 4's Katie Valenzuela) held a press conference in wealthy East Sacramento's McKinley Park to champion an ordinance banning homeless camps within 500 feet of schools. Will this have any effect on the homelessness crisis? Of course not. But Ashby--who is lagging badly in her California Senate race--will do whatever she can for a headline these days. Even if that means terrorizing our unhoused neighbors. We also discuss the recent string of shootings in Sacramento, and what is being done to curb gun violence in the city. Remember when America's Landlord Steve Maviglio went on a racist, xenophobic tirade against Councilmember Valenzuela after the Midtown shooting? Why was he so silent in the ensuing days, when gun violence rocked the districts of council members Sean Loloee, Jeff Harris and Jay Schenirer? Sacramento's police have never been more well funded or more heavily armed than they are today. And yet gun violence persists. That's because the police don't actually exist to prevent crime. They just respond to it. Yet our very conservative council members continue to try to defund the social programs that can actually curb violence in the community. Tracy Broshar began riding motorcycles at age 19 but she hadn't ridden for years out of respect for her partner's wishes. When her partner died three years ago and the effects of Covid-19 hit, Broshar "felt lost." "I kept thinking, 'what can I do to get myself out of this,' " the resident of Sacramento recently explained. "I know I couldn't ride two-wheelers anymore because I needed a knee replacement. I started looking online and I found the three-wheelers and history was written." Broshar, 63, now a passionate rider and advocate of three-wheel motorcycles, is our guest on this episode of The Weekly Driver Podcast. Tracy Broshar of Sacramento began riding three-wheel motorcycles in her early 60s. Co-host Bruce Aldrich and I talk with the rider (she's a close neighbor in East Sacramento) about her experiences on her Can-Am Spyder, a three-wheel, 1,300 cc motorcycle manufactured by Can-Am Motorcycles, a division of Bombardier Recreational Products. Three-Wheel Motorcycles: Confidence Builder "It's a very comfortable fit; it kind gives you a little bit of self-confidence if you haven't ridden a two-wheeler before," said Broshar. "They are independent suspension so you're not going to roll over on them like the old three-wheel bikes, so it's a much more comfortable ride." Unlike driving a two-wheeler, Broshar says she has more control on the road when riding three-wheel motorcycles. They have a single rear drive wheel and two wheels in front for steering. "One thing I've noticed is that the car people like us," she said. "I have more people wanting to stop and talk about it. I even have young men going by with their thumbs up." Broshar, who sold her first-three-wheeler her now riding partner, upgraded to the Can-Am with cruise control. She uses her vehicle on weekend trips and she's driven round-trip from Sacramento to Missouri. The woman who purchased Broshar's first bike had never ridden a two-wheel motorcycle and she became a three-wheel enthusiast at age 65. Three-Wheel Motorcycles: Road Comfort Please join Bruce and me as our guest explains the comfort of riding a three-wheeler and shares many of her experiences. She's ridden to Oregon and nearly across the country on Route 66. She rides in small groups but also enjoy solo travel. One of the Sacramento region's newest restaurants is Franquette, which opened in West Sacramento's Bridge District earlier this year, bringing an all-day French café from the same group that opened East Sacramento's Canon.Chef Elena Winks is on this week's episode of the Visit Sacramento Podcast, detailing the restaurant's offerings, location, and her experience learning to cook both in France and at Canon before taking on her role at Franquette.
In a move confusing nearly every Sacramentan, City Attorney Susana Alcala Wood has announced that Sacramento City Council members are, in fact, still in charge of the districts they ran before redistricting last December, adding major implications to a recall push by reactionaries against District 4 Councilmember Katie Valenzuela. The new districts will not go into effect until their upcoming elections in 2022 and 2024. So what does that mean for an area like East Sacramento, which will technically not have representation until 2024 after the next District 4 election? And who can now participate in the Valenzuela recall? If it makes the ballot this year, will Land Park residents be able to vote both in the District 7 election (where they will subsequently be represented) AND the recall? If so, why? We spoke with some of the state's top redistricting experts to get the inside scoop. We also discuss the new homelessness ballot measure that City Council was coerced into putting into play by local business leaders, with little notice to the community (and just days after the biggest mass shooting the region has seen in the modern era). Yousef Baig outlined just how disgusting this was last week, while councilmembers Katie Valenzuela and Mai Vang wrote an op-ed explaining the problems with this move. Feb. 17 Flash Briefing for The Sacramento Bee, California. Our top news stories of the day on an East Sacramento homeless parking site, coronavirus masks and Aggie Square. Plus, weather and more.
Today we'll be discussing the launch of the 2022 election cycle, looking at races local to the Sacramento region. As a launching point, we'll talk about Yousef Baig's Sacramento Bee piece on the need for fresh faces on the Sacramento City Council. While we disagree with his ongoing cheerleading for a strong mayor form of government, we do agree that the majority of the current council needs to go. Here are the seats that are up for election this year: District 3 On Monday, January 24, Karina Talamantes threw her hat in the ring for this newly drawn district, currently represented by Councilmember Jeff Harris. A former Bernie supporter, Talamantes has the support of council's two most progressive members. She also, however, is the chief of staff of current conservative Democrat CM Angelique Ashby. Also in the running is Michael Lynch, the executive director of Improve Your Tomorrow, who last election cycle put his weight behind Mayor Darrell Steinberg's "strong mayor" ballot initiative. Oh, and have we mentioned Jeff Harris? He likely would have run again, but his neighborhood of East Sacramento has been drawn into Katie Valenzuela's District 4. Will he move to South Natomas to hold onto his seat? District 5 Originally the most interesting race in the region, this election pits homeless advocate and cannabis advocate Caity Maple against Kendra Macias Reed, a city planning commissioner who runs a construction company. [You can take a look at Maple and Macias Reed's Sac Follows the Money spreadsheets here.] A resident of the Z'Berg Park neighborhood, Macias Reed has been drawn outside of District 5. She told the Bee she'll be moving back into the district soon, but rumors are emerging that she may ultimately not. District 1 With Councilmember Angelique Ashby running for the California State Senate, this seat representing the northern suburbs is also wide open. According to the Sacramento Bee, the following folks are considering a run here: "- Lisa Kaplan, Natomas Unified School Board member since 2002, and an attorney, is running for the seat, she said. - Alyssa Lozano, a realtor and president of the Natomas Chamber of Commerce, is seriously considering a run, said Andrew Acosta, a political consultant. - Basim Elkarra, executive director of The Council on American-Islamic Relations and member of the Twin Rivers Unified School District Board, is considering a run, he said." District 7 Currently running unopposed, Rick Jennings may have an easy ticket to another round on the dais. Last week the City of Sacramento, led by District 3 Councilmember Jeff Harris, launched a widespread, violent sweep against hundreds of unhoused folks living in trailers and cars on Commerce Circle. Since City Manager Howard Chan is less likely to commit to sweeps these days unless a councilmember tells him to do it in their district, it's safe to infer that Harris was the mastermind behind this move, which tore families apart and forced people to lose some of their only belongings just two weeks before Christmas and days before a massive storm hit the region. Harris confirmed as much in a public meeting that week. Not only that, he's currently pushing the American River Flood Control District to terrorize these folks even further, using a loophole in the landmark Martin v. Boise decision, which deemed homeless sweeps without sufficient shelter/housing options to be cruel and unusual punishment. The ultimate irony? In the midst of Harris's reign of terror against unhoused folks, he found himself just last weekend receiving a "Heroes for the Homeless" award. The neoliberal consensus is truly beyond satire. One possible ray of light in this dark moment: Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg and others on the dais disagreed with the sweeps and are pushing this week for a new ordinance that would stop the city from towing the trailers and cars of unhoused folks if officials cannot provide shelter or a safe space for their vehicles to go. Another beam of sunshine? Jeff Harris has been drawn out of his council district in this year's redistricting process, and word on the street is that he is livid. If he wants to defend his seat in 2022, he'll need to move from East Sacramento to South Natomas. Think that'll happen? Another option for Harris is to wait until 2024 to run against District 4 City Councilmember Katie Valenzuela, whose jurisdiction he now lives in. We also take a moment to discuss Sacramento's new police chief, Kathy Lester. Lester, the city's first female police chief, will be replacing Daniel Hahn, who was the first Black police chief. Hahn's four-year tenure was marked by civil unrest that reflected a national movement to hold violent cops accountable for their actions. We discuss his time as the city's top cop, and what we can expect from Lester. Thanks for listening, defund the police and, as always: Twitter: @youknowkempa, @ShanNDSTevens, @Flojaune, @guillotine4you, @aolbites Support us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/voicesrivercity Sacramentans can hear us on 103.1 KUTZ Tuesdays at 5 pm and again Wednesdays at 8 am. [To view/listen to the full episode, become a patron here!] We're joined by Sacramento District 8 Councilmember Mai Vang to discuss the rise in racism against the API community, and what we can do about it. It's also the two-year anniversary of the night Sacramento police illegally kettled and arrested 84 people (including clergy and press) at a demonstration in East Sacramento protesting District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert's refusal to charge the cops who killed Stephon Clark in his grandma's back yard. Flo discusses what happened that evening.
Monica Dinon (pronounced Dee-Non) is the blueprint for entrepreneurial success. Monica understands what "THE GRIND" is all about when it comes to working hard to get what you want. Bueno Sport + Swim is a result of Monica's hard work. From the countless jobs to the inspiration for Bueno to the pop-up events at local gyms and in her own home, Monica has made her brand known. In today's interview episode of Experience the Buzz, Host Steve Buzzard speaks with Monica Dinon. "You can feel the energy when she speaks. It's inspirational and I encourage everyone listening to take notes because Monica delivers some great information for all aspiring entrepreneurs." Our conversation hits FOUR areas: Segment ONE is a full description of ALL the countless jobs that Monica did before she arrived at running her own business. Monica also talks about the benefits of being an entrepreneur and the idea of traveling and bringing ideas back to Sacramento.Segment TWO highlights Bueno Sport + Swim. The origin. The challenges. The start of it all from purchasing a trailer to doing pop-up events. And then finally the arrival of taking Bueno Sport + Swim into a brick and mortar building.Segment THREE Monica talks about the success behind her brand's Instagram account. She lets us in on the Bueno Experience, having employees for the first time, her brand going beyond Sacramento, and the origin of the Bueno Logo.Segment FOUR, identifies being a small business owner during the COVID pandemic, her pivot to doing personal deliveries (Genius!), and the future of Bueno Sport + Swim. Here are some of my favorite HIGHLIGHTS ...1. I was impressed most by the fact that Monica never took out any loans. She used all of her own money toward her business. That's pretty awesome!2. I am admittedly obsessed with the origin of a brand idea or the logo. You will absolutely love Monica's story about how Bueno came to be.3. Donuts, Bacon, and Champagne were the keys to success to her home pop-up events. 4. Huge credit to husband Brandon, who is Monica's biggest cheerleader, and encouraged her at key moments of the Bueno journey!ENJOY THE TALKING STORY!✏️ Address | 3412 Folsom Blvd⏱ Hours | Monday-Sunday 10am-4pm

And the social contract that binds us all, that males us human- do not read someone else’s diary. Its a part of our social contract, our moral code, our given rights to one another, from childhood throughout adulthood. Then, does it surprise you, dear listeners, to know that these two hosts cannot be trusted to keep that code enforced. Of course it doesn’t, Claire is the nosiest bitch you’ll ever meet. She tells you at the beginning of every episode, duh. Welcome in to episode 83, where we admit our bad behavior freely, but what the hell is new in the world of this podcast? This week in review brings the roses (Claire can finally play some real games with her oldest son and is enjoying her uno champion status) and the thorns (Fran is getting old and needs to start taking glucosamine for her bunk ass knee joints). News of the week is kept on the lighter side, during these dark times (B- celebrity Armie hammer is giving some real wild Dms out to the 20 year olds of the world and the sex and the City reboot is a coming!). A listener is seeking our advice this week asking if it is OK to read her daughter’s diary in order to gain insight into her world. The East Area Rapist (EAR) terrorized suburban neighborhoods in Northern California from June 1976 ‘til July of 1979. East Sacramento became the first of these “clusters.” He would break in, rape the women, ransack, and much more while in the home. It took almost ten attacks before they publicly announce and admit they had a serial rapist on the loose. Listen as we tell you all about the first 25 EAR attacks! **WARNING: This episode contains explicit content that may not be suitable for all audiences. Amir Daneshvar is accustomed to selling unique, high-end, modern-day cars — Audi to Porsche, BMW to Mercedes-Benz. But how about a 1958 Chevrolet Apache Fleetside? It's more unusual considering its appearance. It's an homage on wheels to the San Francisco Giants. The pickup truck was made for one of the team's "super fans." The year of the truck is the year the Giants relocated from New York to San Francisco. It has a 350 crate motor and a 700R4 transmission. A 1958 Chevy pickup truck in the SF Giants colors is for sale at Zen Auto Sales in Sacramento, California. Image © Bruce Aldrich/2020. Daneshvar is our guest on Episode #142 of The Weekly Driver Podcast. Co-hosts Bruce Aldrich and James Raia visit with Daneshvar in his office at Zen Auto Sales in East Sacramento. The 1958 Chevrolet Apache Fleetside is parked outside, a few feet away. A one-of-a-kind 1958 pickup truck Apache was Chevrolet's terminology for the light-duty trucks of the so-called Task Force line. It was introduced as a replacement for the Advance Design line. The Apache was sold in the Fleetside configuration starting in 1958 and it's become an industry favorite for customization. The pickup truck's exterior paint is dominated by the team's primary colors, orange and black. The team logos on the pickup truck are original 1958 Giants decals. "We just call it a nice daily driver," said Daneshvar, who has owned Zen Auto Sales since June of 2006. "It's a vehicle somebody took the time to dedicate to the appreciation and his love of the team." "I guess with any of these vehicles you can pick it apart with a fine comb. But for the most part, anybody who likes to have a token of a sports team, this is a really nice example of it. We are pleased and honored to have it." Not all details of the pickup truck are known. It's had a few owners and on consignment by its current owner, Julio Peix. He owns Lefty's, a taproom and grill across the street from Zen Auto. Peix bought the vehicle years ago and had plans to use it in opening day parades for youth baseball teams. He tried make an arrangement with the Giants to use the vehicle for marketing or promotional events but that didn't happen. The Sacramento River Cats, the AAA affiliate of the Giants, weren't interested, either. Prix decided owning two food businesses in Sacramento took precedent and the vehicle is now on consignment. "It's not overdone like some trucks can be," said Daneshvar. "It's tastefully done. It's just a nice example for someone." "And I think when people buy these vehicles, they understand that they are not the comfort features of the vehicles you buy cars. But this one does have air conditioning, power steering and disc brakes on it." Daneshvar, a former pharmaceutical salesman whose father works in the same building space in a complementary business, is happy to discuss more details of the truck as well as the histories of his other vehicles. The price of the pickup truck isn't posted on the vehicle, a usual approach in the vintage car business. But the Zen Auto Sales' owner estimated its worth at approximately $22,000. Dean Seavers has long appreciated vintage cars. He's owned several, a passion that continues a family heritage. Seavers' now-deceased father worked for General Motors in Fremont, California, and his son learned about mechanics and vehicle history at a young age. Seavers is also a renaissance man. He likes old stuff in his East Sacramento home. He appreciates craftsmanship from yesterday. Seavers' interests are represented ideally by his current favorite automobile — a 1961 Studebaker Lark VIII station wagon. He's owned the car for about three years and seemingly knows every inch of it. Dean Seavers of Sacramento owns a 1961 Studebaker Lark VIII. Image Courtesy of Dean Seavers. Seavers is our guest on Episode #102 of The Weekly Driver Podcast. Co-hosts Bruce Aldrich and James Raia talk with Seavers at a coffee shop near his downtown Sacramento workplace. Seavers, a procurement officer for the State of California, sometimes drives his Studebaker to work. But mostly it's a weekend car and he enjoys working participating in Studebaker clubs of like-minded folks. The Studebaker company, which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1952, ceased automobile production in 1966. The Lark was made from 1959 to 1966. Studebaker and Packard were once aligned. Both companies independently and together made heavy vehicles with lots of chrome. The vehicles were simultaneously innovative and problematic. Studebaker owners are passionate about their cars as any vintage car enthusiasts. Seavers is no exception. Please join us in this episode, a lively discussion with Seavers. He talks about acquiring parts, working on his vehicle and his appreciation for Studebaker. It's a manufacturer he believes is largely under-appreciated. On this episode of The Critical Hour, Dr. Wilmer Leon is joined by William Binney, former highly placed intelligence official with the United States National Security Agency turned whistle-blower who resigned on October 31, 2001, after more than 30 years with the agency. It is being reported that the National Security Agency has quietly shut down a system that analyzes logs of Americans' domestic calls and texts, according to a senior Republican congressional aide, Luke Murry, who is House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy's national security adviser. If true, this halts a program that has touched off disputes about privacy and the rule of law since the September 11 attacks. It is reported that the agency has not used the system in months, and the Trump administration might not ask Congress to renew its legal authority, which is set to expire at the end of the year. Is this true, and does it matter?More than 80 people were arrested last night during a protest in East Sacramento, California. They are protesting the findings of the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office regarding Stephon Clark's police shooting death. DA Anne Marie Schubert said Saturday that no criminal charges will be filed against the two officers who shot and killed the 22-year-old last year, saying, “[W]hen we look at the facts and the law, and we follow our ethical responsibilities, the answer to that question [of whether a crime was committed] is no. And as a result, we will not charge these officers with any criminal liability related to the shooting death and use of force on Stephon Clark.” Is this a surprising decision, and what are the options going forward for the family of Clark and for the residents of Sacramento? Attorneys for Timothy Loehmann, the Cleveland police officer who shot and killed 12-year-old Tamir Rice, filed a lawsuit yesterday Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court seeking to overturn an arbitrators decision to keep him off the force. The city is making a similar court challenge to an arbitrator's decision that is expected to allow Alan Buford, who shot and killed 18-year-old Brandon Jones (who was shot during a struggle with police after a reported break-in at a store, but a police spokesman said there was no weapon found at the scene), to return to his old job. Both cases went before arbitrators, whose decisions are often the final word in such disputes. Both disputes would also require judges to find significant errors in the judgment of the arbitrators, and that is a legal long shot, according to labor and law experts interviewed by cleveland.com.The family of dual US-Saudi citizen being held in Saudi Arabia believes he has been tortured. It is being reported that Dr. Walid Fitaihi has been beaten, tortured and jailed by the Saudi government. The US State Department confirmed Fitaihi's detainment in Saudi Arabia and that it has raised Fitaihi's case with the Saudi government. Fitaihi is a physician who came to the US in the 1980s for school and then worked here. He went back to Saudi Arabia in 2006 to start a hospital, which his family built. He would periodically come back to the US for business. He was detained in November 2017 at the Ritz Carlton hotel, along with other prominent Saudis, his lawyer says. How concerned should we be about this action being taken by the Saudi government?GUESTS: William Binney — Former highly placed intelligence official with the United States National Security Agency turned whistle-blower who resigned on October 31, 2001, after more than 30 years with the agency. Mark Rosso a local grassroots organizer advocating for municipal broadband in Sacramento. The idea is that the city would provide broadband to residents on a not-for-profit basis. Private companies could still offer broadband but would have to actually compete for clients, unlike the current situation where all-too many areas have only one broadband provider. Rosso is also a staffer in the California State Assembly. He has worked on utilities and parks issues statewide including Proposition 68. The Creep Among Us, the true story of the next chapter. Investigations and research which entails some of what we know a little more than five months into solving who The East Area Rapist, Original Night Stalker, Golden State Killer is. The story continues after the ARREST of Joseph James DeAngelo on April 24, 2018 in Sacramento, California. The trial estimated to begin in about four years will be unprecedented as several jurisdictions will try DeAngelo in Sacramento at the same time. There have been multitudes of articles and information that have come out in the five months since the arrest. DeAngelo was found from DNA left at the scenes of his many rapes and then murders over a ten year time span 1976-1986. A profile downloaded to GEDmatch as well as experts who traced his profile to his family tree were instrumental in the final arrest of a man whose DNA matched the suspect with a 100% match. Anne Penn is just one of hundreds of people involved in the story who needed to investigate the details. He truly was the creep hiding among us. The creepiest thing of all is he was living among his victims in his favorite attack areas in the East Sacramento area of Citrus Heights for most of the last 42 years. We shall see how the investigators connect all of the dots. Ms. Penn was compelled to follow this story through to justice. Her investigations into the details of who this perpetrator is and how we missed him in 1979 are something she had to ask questions about. Larry Crompton has written his thoughts after the arrest and they are included. Mark Smith discusses the ballistics involved in some of the murders. Many ran the idea that the criminal was in Law Enforcement throughout the many years. Mr. Smith discusses how we could have and should have determined that this man was a cop. THE CREEP AMONG US: Golden State Killer After The Arrest-Anne Penn
Det. Richard Shelby was the first Sacramento detective to make a connection between a series of rapes that began in communities in East Sacramento. Law enforcement failed to stop him before he transformed in to a Southern California serial killer, committing some 53 rapes and 12 homicides from 1976-1986.After Shelby's retirement, 20 years after the case had gone cold, he was contacted by his old employer, the Sacramento Sheriff's Derpartment. They had learned , through DNA analysis, that the East Area Rapist EAR and The Original Nightstalker ONS were the same person. And, they were re-opening the investigation. Retired West Coast Chief of Special Invesigation for the federal government, Russ Oase contacted Shelby and asked him to write down everything he recalled. Shelby was once again involved in the active investigation, his notes morphing into his instrumental book Hunting A Psychopath:The EAR/ONS Investigation-The Original Investigator Speaks Out, published in 2014. In 2016 the FB! re-entered the investigation, utilizing advances in DNA technology, offering a 50,000 reward and asking for the public's help in capturing the serial killer.Joseph James DeAngelo was arrested April 25th, 2018 after a DNA match. DET. RICHARD SHELBY: The Hunt For The Psychopath is Over-Golden State Killer, EAR/ONS Captured!
Thirty-two years ago, Karen Saylor's parents drove into a downtown Sacramento, California, car dealership and drove away in a new 1986 turbocharged Chrysler Lebaron convertible. Like the legacies of many family cars, Karen Saylor fondly recalls going shopping with mother with the Lebaron's convertible top down. She remembers trips to the Monterey Peninsula when mother and daughter had their hair blowing in the wind. Karan Saylor is the owner of a 1986 Chrysler Lebaron convertible. She recalls a lot about how much cars meant to her parents and to her husband with whom she owned several Ford Thunderbirds. The Lebaron has a lot of history and Saylor is happy to share it. Saylor's parents are deceased as is her husband. The T-birds are gone, but the Chrysler Lebaron remains. It's beautiful, and it's homage to the craftsmanship of the cars of the era. This pristine 1986 Chrysler Lebaron is for sale in East Sacramento. While an SUV is now Saylor's daily driver, she still drives the Lebaron. It always attracts attention. It's in fine shape and has been driven only 48,000 miles in 32 years or about 1,500 miles per year. It has all of its original documentation and service records. Saylor has decided it's time to sell the Lebaron. She's asking $5,000. If interested, please contact theweeklydriver.com at james@jamesraia.com and I will forward the information to the car's owner.
[Part 1 of 5] In 1976, Rancho Cordova was a fairly new, postwar suburb in East Sacramento. We break down their (lack of) flavor and aroma, plus hypothesize why people would imbibe these concoctions in the first place. Plus! Melissa's diet secrets, Kim's discovery of a medical shortcut to dieting, and why certain regions of America don't have access to mangos. And if that wasn't enough, we discover what makes something "artisan" and that even cats love horoscopes. All of this and so much more, on Episode 39 of Barley & Me. Enjoy!
The Original Night Stalker. In the mid to late 70's, the East Area Rapist rapist was operating around East Sacramento, California. In the dark of night he would enter their homes and wake them. With a light shone in their faces, he growled commands through gritted teeth. Their wrists and ankles would be bound tightly with a diamond knot. Always one step ahead of authorities, he could not be stopped. Eventually he began to murder those he chose to attack. He has never been captured. A true crime episode.
"Hunting a Psychopath" is a fascinating first hand account of the crimes of California's East Area Rapist Original Night Stalker couples killer. Detective Shelby was the first Sacramento detective to make a connection between a series of rapes that began in the middle class communities of East Sacramento in the late 1970's. His book details the efforts to apprehend this psychopath before he transformed into a southern California serial killer who preyed upon middle class couples through a terrifying series of home invasion murders. I highly recommend this book for readers of true crime. This particular series of crimes remains unsolved, leaving many questions about a violent predator who has been labeled one of the most brazen criminals and one of the least publicized. Detective Shelby's book is fast paced and full of investigation details.. . HUNTING A PSYCHOPATH-The East Area Rapist-Original Night Stalker Investigation-Richard Shelby
