Parashat Acharei Mot begins by telling us that Hashem spoke to Moshe after the tragic deaths of Nadav and Avihu, who died while attempting to draw closer to Hashem. Though their death was a colossal tragedy, the Torah teaches us how to view it—and more broadly, how to understand when tragedy befalls righteous individuals especially when they are engaged in holy pursuits. At that time, the Jewish people were yearning for the Shechina to dwell in the Mishkan they had built. After the sin of the Egel , they were unsure whether Hashem would rest His presence among them. On the day of the inauguration, Aharon offered multiple korbanot as instructed, but still, the Shechina did not descend. Only after Moshe and Aharon entered the Ohel Mo'ed to pray did a heavenly fire come down and consume the offerings. The people rejoiced—Hashem had forgiven them and chosen to dwell among them. In their deep yearning and love for Hashem, Nadav and Avihu brought the Ketoret on their own initiative. Then, the unimaginable happened: another fire came down and consumed them. Everyone was in shock. Was this a sign of Hashem's anger? Did it mean the forgiveness was rescinded? Moshe then told Aharon that Hashem had previously said He would be sanctified through the deaths of great people—and Nadav and Avihu were those chosen Tzaddikim. The Torah testifies that when Aharon heard this, " וידם אהרן "—he remained silent , accepting Hashem's will without protest. As a reward for his profound emunah and submission, Hashem then spoke directly to him. What appeared to be divine punishment was, in fact, a great Kiddush Hashem . The Or HaChayim explains that Nadav and Avihu became so spiritually elevated that their souls desired only closeness to Hashem and no longer wished to remain in the physical world. Today, we lack prophets to explain tragedies, but we have the Torah—eternal and unchanging—to guide us in how to view them. Our greatest strength lies in trusting Hashem and using pain as a catalyst for growth. We are reminded that this world is temporary, and every moment here is an opportunity to serve and connect with our Creator. The Rashbam writes that the greatest Kiddush Hashem on that day was not the death of the tzadikim , but Aharon's silent acceptance. Seeing his beloved sons die before him, he continued to serve Hashem with unwavering devotion. That act sanctified the Mishkan more than any offering brought that day. When a person accepts Hashem's judgment with love, he elevates not only himself but also the space around him. Such acceptance carries a powerful spiritual energy, capable of invoking blessing and even salvation. The sanctity of Har HaBayit , where the Beit HaMikdash would one day stand, was similarly established through Avraham Avinu's loving acceptance of Hashem's will. When commanded to offer Yitzchak as a korban, despite the contradiction to Hashem's earlier promise that his future offspring would come through Yitzchak, Avraham did not question. The Targum Yonatan on the passuk יראה ויקרא שם המקום ה ' explains that Avraham prayed not to harbor any complaints, fully submitting himself to Hashem's will. His wholehearted obedience imbued the mountain with eternal holiness. Just as the Mishkan was sanctified through Aharon's faith, and the Beit HaMikdash through Avraham's, so too can we infuse holiness into our lives and surroundings by accepting Hashem's decrees with love and trust. Whenever a person accepts the will of Hashem with love, although it's difficult, he elevates himself and the place around him. Our job is to trust Hashem and always continue growing in our Avodah no matter what happens.
There are two amazing explanations on the word Pekudei. First , it means to count- referring to when the Jewish people brought the multitude of material and the Kalim of the Mishkon to be counted by Moshe. The purpose of the Mishkon was to forgive the Jewish people for the sin of the Egel. Moshe, as the leader of the Jewish people, was able to transfer the ownership of materials from the individual to the public- the Jewish people. A second explanation of Pekudei is to bring together. By Moshe building the Mishkon, he brought together all the higher energies and unlimited Kadusha from above. The idea of the Mishkon was to take something limited that could be counted, and through that, to draw down the unlimited Divine.לקו״ש כו-ב
It's all about the generosity of the heart. After the Jewish people sinned with the Egel , Hashem forgave them. In order to counter the excitement they had when they brought the gold to build the Egel, the Jewish people displayed their generosity of heart during their donations for the Mishkan, which were accompanied with great enthusiasm and excitement. Their massive donations, initiated from themselves, were accompanied with passion and excitement. This countered the exhiliration displayed at the Egel. Interestingly, in this area, the women who naturally have more fear and belief in Hashem and naturally more generosity of the heart, brought more than the men. Also in accomplishing the purpose of the Mishkan- that Hashem should dwell permanently in the Mishkan, the generosity of the heart, contributions initiated by the Jewish people themselves, guaranteed that the Shchina rest there and in a permanent way.לקו״ש כו-ב
On this episode of the California Now Podcast, host Soterios Johnson dives into the best of Sacramento's food, culture, and outdoor scene with three expert insiders. First up, Johnson is joined by Benjy Egel, the food and drinks writer for The Sacramento Bee. Egel explains how the area's agricultural abundance helps fuel its thriving farm-to-fork dining scene. “So much of the U.S.'s produce comes from the Sacramento region and the Central Valley as a whole, and so we have this wealth of tomatoes and asparagus and even caviar here in the region,” says Egel. He then dives into where to grab some local good eats, from neighborhood favorites in Little Saigon to Michelin-starred joints in Midtown. Next, Johnson is joined by Ashley Shult Langdon, author of Mildly Scenic, a trail guide to Sacramento's Lower American River. The outdoor enthusiast and longtime Sacramentan describes what aspects of the river continue to surprise and delight. “Just within a 10-minute walk from the city, you can feel like you're out in the wilderness,” says Langdon. Langdon gets into her favorite spots and the family activities that visitors can enjoy along the lower half of the American River. Last, Johnson talks arts and culture with Hillary Louise Johnson of Sactown Magazine. The seasoned writer discusses Sacramento's growing creative landscape. “There's such a density of public art [in Midtown], in part because Sacramento's pretty mural-crazy,” says Johnson. She then goes on a culture-fueled walking tour throughout the city's artsy neighborhoods with stops for coffee and shopping along the way.

There are two approaches to learning Torah and fulfilling Mitzvos. One is similar to a servant that does everything his master commands him to do, yet his own identity remains important; he takes care of his own affairs and lives his own life. This individual is compared to a person that keeps the Torah; he does everything Hashem commands him to do, but he is his own person and lives his own life. A deeper approach is where every aspect of the individual is devoted to Torah; he doesn't have an independent life because Torah guides him in every aspect of his life. This is hinted at in the word Torah itself which means “lesson/guide“.In addition, Hashem says the first of the Aseres Hadibros in singular in order to allow Moshe the ability to defend the Jewish people who served the Egel. It would afford Moshe the ability to say that the Jews may have mistakenly assumed that Hashem was just talking to him. Therefore, Hashem goes out of His way to change the wording just so Moshe should be able to help a Jew, although he may have opposed Hashem..לקו״ש כו-ב

We're now the song of the Behema Gasa Tehora the large domesticated kosher animal. We already had the Song of the Ox, and therefore the commentaries say we're talking about the para , which is the female cow . She has a separate song: בְּהֵמָה גַּסָּה טְהוֹרָה אוֹמֶרֶת. הַרְנִינוּ לֵאלֹהִים עוּזֵּנוּ הָרִיעוּ לֵאלֹהֵי יַעֲקֹב: (תהילים פא ב) Let us sing a song to God, our strength, let us sound the trumpet to the God of Yaakov. As always, we have to understand the meaning of the pasuk, and also why this animal (in our case today, the cow) is singing this song. Rav Chaim Kanievsky cites a pasuk in Shemuel א 7,12 that discusses how the cows brought the Aron Hakodesh back after it was in captivity. The cows sang a song, says the Gemara in Avoda Zara 24B, that God miraculously allowed them to sing, " Roni Roni Hashita/ Sing sing to the Aron of made out of Shittim wood . Rav Chaim Kanievsky points out that the cows sang this song of Rena . And that's why in our pasuk, it's a song of Rena, to our God, that is our strength. But let's go deeper. What exactly is going on of here? Why the cows? And what song are we singing? The Mabit tells us in Perek Shira the Hereinu is a double Rena . Why a double Rena ? We're going to sing the song for God's justice that turned into mercy , and we'll sing a song for God's mercy. Elohim always means justice. Hareinu Elohim/ we'll sing to Elohim. That means God's trait of justice, turned around into mercy. This pasuk is said on Rosh Hashanah, and this entire chapter is talking about the Shofar of Rosh Hashanah. So this is a Rosh Hashanah message that the cows are going to be singing. On Rosh Hashanah, we have Middat HaDin/God's judgement. How do we deal with the Middat HaDin? What do we do when it looks like we're in a precarious situation? The Bet Yosef, in Or HaChaim siman ר צב where it talks about why we use the term Yitzhak Yiranen/ Yitzhak sings a song, says Abraham symbolizes Hessed, Yitzhak symbolizes Din / justice , and Yaakov Avinu is the harmony of both of them. So Yitzhak sings the song when times are tough, the songs of accepting God's will. Where do we see this? When Avraham told Yitzhak in Bereshit 22,8, " You are going to be the Olah, " it says Yitzhak sang a song of Rena . Anytime there's a korban, there's a song. So Yitzhak Avinu says, I am the korban, and I'm going to sing the song of the Korban. I'm going to accept God's will, even though I'm the Korban. Our three Avot correspond to Kohen, Levi and Yisrael. So Yitzhak Avinu deals with God's justice and sings a song of Rena, which is accepting God's will. But what happens when you're in a difficult situation and you sing the song and you accept God's will? Kol Rena V'yeshua B'Olahalei Sadikim/In the tents of Sadikim there's a Kol Rena, they are singing, even in the most difficult of times, accepting the will of God. V'Yeshua, and Hashem saves them. Yitzhak was eventually saved. He wasn't offered as a korban. The knife was taken from his neck. In part, it was because of Yitzhak Yeranen/Yitzhak Sang , he accepted with Rena . And now we go a step further. Why did the Jewish people choose a golden calf? As we know, the para is the mother of the calf. in Rashi Bamidbar, 19, 22 explaining why we have a para Aduma, it says it atones for the sin of the golden calf, because he calf is the child of the para. Rashi brings a mashal to a maid-servant whose child dirtied the palace. And they say, "Let the mother clean up the dirt of the child." So too, "Let the Para come to clean up form the Egel." What was wrong with the Egel? What went wrong? The Ramban says that the Jewish people were in the desert. The desert is a desolate area, which symbolizes Middat HaDin, and they felt, not that they were worshiping the Egel, but they felt that since Moshe was gone, they needed to focus on something on God's throne, that you focus on during times of Din. In Yehezkiel 1,20 it says, The cow was on the left. Left is always justice, right is kindness. So therefore, Aharon Hakohen thought, let that destructive cow, the cow that gores, come be the one that's going to direct us when Moshe is gone . So the cow symbolizes justice and here the cow is going to tell us the secret. You made a mistake. In a time of justice, I'll tell you the secret. הַרְנִינוּ לֵאלֹהִים עוּזֵּנוּ הָרִיעוּ לֵאלֹהֵי יַעֲקֹב: (תהילים פא ב) Sing the song of Rena to God, accepting His will. That's our strength. In Vayikra 23, 24, when talking about the shofar, Seforno quotes our pasuk and he says, it's time of justice. And what do we do? We want to be happy that God is our King. We give ourselves over to His will, and we're hoping that He's going to tilt the scale of justice and turn it into kindness, and will save us. And he quotes a pasuk, Hashem is my judge. Hashem is the One that sets the rules up, and therefore He will save us. So on Rosh Hashana we accept the will of God. We go with the approach of Rena . That's the secret of the cows. And that will bring us the ultimate salvation.

Ekev | 40 Days and 40 Nights, Revisiting Moshe's Speech About the Egel, by Rav Yitzchak Etshalom Moshe's teaching the audience of Sefer Devarim - an orphaned generation that was, by and large, born into freedom in the desert - has curious twists and turns when contrasted with the narratives of Shemot and Bamidbar. In the middle of Parashat Ekev, Moshe retells the story of the sin of the Egel, but Aharon's role is overlooked, yet he is identified as a target of God's anger. The two motifs of "40 days and 40 nights" along with the tablets are repeated far more frequently than in the narrative of Shemot, raising the larger question of what Moshe's purpose in this speech may be. Exploring the contexts of where "40 days and 40 nights" appear in Tanakh helps us formulate an approach that explains the rhetorical strategy/aim taken by Moshe. Source sheet >>

“The barrier to introspection is self-awareness “says Kim Egel ,our guest for this week's Above Ground Podcast, episode one hundred eighty. Kim chats with the guys about her path into the mental health field as a therapist in San Diego, California. Kim looks to empower and provoke change in her clients. Time to start walking the path with Kim Egel. With no self-awareness you will not ask yourself questions about who you are. The only way to learn is to ask questions and acquire the answers. When the journey of a thousand miles begins it is best to have at least a general understanding of where you are headed or you will get lost. You can never plan the entire trip, but by asking about your direction helps you get back on course. Kim's fascination with people started very early and she learned that she could make a career out of helping individuals discover who they really are. Walking the path is a continuous process. But how do we start to feel our uncomfortable feelings and sit with them. Just start toward where you would like to head, but don't lose your curiosity about where you are headed. Kim has more than twenty years of experience and was doing this job before covid and now post covid and the world has changed every where. Kim's approach is very person-centered and works within the humanity of the individual. Kim's practice weaves a tapestry of modalities, a sort of extension of who she is just like her endeavors of jewelry, photography and blogging. Our podcast struggles with the absence of Moshe Rabbeinu at Yisro's feast upon becoming a GER.Was this a piety as our commentators suggest (waiting on their table like Abraham) or does his absence reflect a deep difference in approach to Jewish Law and Revelation. (He fails to mention Yisro once in Devorim when discussing the very same laws).I submit that Yisro's turn to Judaism was based on his “hearing” the story of all the wondrous deeds by Hashem, and comparing it to all the other religions he had tasted, felt the most compelling. This rational (almost Maimonidean) approach was resisted by Moshe Rabbeinu Who had tasted the ambivalent power of the Divine and the danger of getting too close, “seeing” the fire in the Bush and on the Mountain. His Judaism was “Visual” ( you have seen what Hashem did…) and the divine fire of Sinai was forever implanted in each person attending the theophany causing a deep shame (busha…Nedarim 20).The theophany was therefore a traumatic event and, I submit, goes back to the scene of primal trauma , the Akeidah, as described in the poem below. No wonder they made another fire in Parshas Ki Sissa soon afterwards, and there lost all sense of shame on the orgy of the Golden Calf. The fires of the Bush, Har Sinai the Egel, and Auschwitz are all connected, and we the people whose history bears this flame understand an choose Moshe's paradoxical theology Reflected in the conflicted (Mechilta) approach to “maamud har Sinai” as we were thrown backwards 12 mil for every Divine utterance, then ushered back for more.He teaches us in every generation that the choice we made there would forever bind us to the ambivalent nature of ‘pushing us away with His left hand then retrieving us with His right”. We choose this non rational theology over the cool rational Jethro approach since it provides a mythic ground to share our genetic PTSD, our toxic shame, and our insisting we are to blame for everything in our history.
