Mental Health, Security Clearances, and Why Getting Help Isn't a Career Killer

Let's clear something up right away: having a mental health condition doesn't automatically put your security clearance on life support. Despite what your buddy's cousin's former coworker swears happened to "a guy he knew," the government isn't out here revoking clearances simply because someone sought therapy, took medication, or admitted they weren't feeling their best. One of the biggest myths in the cleared community is that getting mental health treatment is somehow worse than ignoring a problem and hoping it magically disappears. Spoiler alert: it isn't. Federal adjudicators care far more about judgment, reliability, and trustworthiness than they do about whether you've had a conversation with a therapist. Seeking treatment is often viewed as a sign of good judgment, not a red flag. John Berry and Lindy Kyzer frequently collaborate to demystify complex security clearance and federal employment laws. Kyzer is the Director of Content at ClearanceJobs, while Berry is a founding partner at the security clearance law firm Berry & Berry, PLLC. They talk this week about mental health issues, degenerative brain diseases like Alzheimer's, and other cognitive health matters. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

What happens when a federal employee loses access to their security clearance — and why is the process so different from the contractor world? On this episode, security clearance attorney John Berry joins Lindy Kyzer to break down the difficult reality facing cleared federal employees dealing with suspended clearances, indefinite suspensions without pay, and lengthy appeals processes. The discussion explores how agencies handle clearance suspensions, why federal employees often have fewer options than contractors, and what role the Merit Systems Protection Board actually plays in these cases. Berry explains why many employees face months — or even years — without pay while waiting for their clearance issues to be resolved, and shares practical advice on navigating appeals, outside employment, and long-term career recovery. If you work in the cleared community or federal workforce, this episode offers an honest look at one of the most stressful scenarios a national security professional can face — along with insight into how some employees successfully rebuild their careers after a suspension. For decades, the cleared workforce followed a fairly predictable path: long tenures, stable programs, and careers built within a single agency or contractor. But today, cleared professionals are moving faster between roles, contracts, and even employment models. Some are chasing better pay, others are seeking flexibility, and many are responding to the realities of contract-driven work.To help unpack what this shift means for both employees and employers, I'm joined by John Berry, security clearance attorney with Berry & Berry and someone who has had a front-row seat to cleared hiring trends for years. In this conversation, we'll talk about why job hopping has become more common, how the idea of “gig work” is showing up even in highly regulated cleared environments, and what recruiters, hiring managers, and cleared professionals should be thinking about as career mobility accelerates. If you notice your pay packet feels a little lighter from next week, it's due to incoming changes coming to KiwiSaver. From April 1, the default KiwiSaver contribution rate will increase from 3 percent to 3.5 percent, a phased move which will take the default rate to 4 percent in 2028. Pathfinder KiwiSaver co-founder John Berry says this will give people more money to enjoy their retirement with, but we're still behind Australia in this regard. "Australia at the moment, their contribution rate is 12 percent. We've got another step up coming in two years' time, that's already locked in...we need to go further, slowly further, over time." Top Stories for November 25th Publish Date: November 25th PRE-ROLL: BUFORD HOLIDAY FESTIVAL From the BG AD Group Studio Welcome to the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. Today is Tuesday, November 25th and Happy Birthday to Joe DiMaggio I’m Peyton Spurlock and here are your top stories presented by KIA Mall of Georgia. John Berry ready to kick off 29th annual Christmas tour in Sugar Hill 'A welcome addition' — Popular Christkindl Market coming to Lawrenceville for the holiday season Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, resigns house seat All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: Kia Mall of Georgia - DTL HOLIDAY STORY 1: John Berry ready to kick off 29th annual Christmas tour in Sugar Hill John Berry’s not making it home for Thanksgiving—again. The country music legend is kicking off his 29th annual Christmas with John Berry tour at the Eagle Theatre in Sugar Hill, where he and his band will spend the week rehearsing before the first show on Friday, Nov. 28. The tour hits 17 cities, including Macon, the only stop that’s been on the schedule every single year. “Even during COVID, the mayor made sure we kept the streak alive,” Berry said. The show? A mix of his hits (Your Love Amazes Me, Standing on the Edge of Goodbye) and Christmas classics from his O Holy Night album. STORY 2: 'A welcome addition' — Popular Christkindl Market coming to Lawrenceville for the holiday season One of the country’s top Christmas markets has found a new home—right in Lawrenceville. The Atlanta Christkindl Market, a German-style holiday tradition that draws up to 160,000 visitors each year, kicks off on Black Friday and runs through Christmas Eve at the Lawrenceville Lawn. Think handcrafted gifts, authentic German food and drinks, a 150-foot Christmas tree, a Ferris wheel, and family-friendly entertainment. After four years in Buckhead, the market outgrew its space. “This is a perfect fit,” said Mayor David Still. “It’s another reason to celebrate the season in our city.” STORY 3: Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, resigns house seat Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene dropped a bombshell Friday—she’s stepping down from her seat in the House. Her last day? January 5. The announcement came via a video she posted on X (formerly Twitter) Why now? What’s next? There’s plenty of room for speculation. Greene’s exit is bound to shake things up. One thing’s for sure: the political world will be buzzing about this one for a while. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We’ll be right back Break 2: Ingles Markets - SUGAR HILL HOLIDAY STORY 4: Police: Hit-and-run driver allegedly abandoned injured passenger after accident A horrifying crash in Duluth earlier this month left a passenger fighting for their life—and the driver now facing a stack of charges. Samuel Contreras-Garcia, who police say fled the scene on foot, has been charged with felony hit-and-run, reckless driving, and more. The crash happened around 5:30 a.m. on Nov. 16 at Buford Highway and Duluth Highway. Officers found a mangled silver sedan wedged between poles, and the unrestrained front-seat passenger had been thrown from the car. Critically injured, they were rushed to the hospital. Surveillance footage allegedly shows Contreras-Garcia abandoning the wreck without calling 911. He was arrested two days later. STORY 5: Gwinnett DA's Office recognizes law enforcement The Red, Blue, and You event wasn’t the only moment of gratitude for Gwinnett’s law enforcement. The District Attorney’s Office hosted its own appreciation ceremony, shining a spotlight on the bravery and service of officers, deputies—and even a nurse—who’ve gone above and beyond. Held at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center, the event honored more than a dozen individuals from six agencies. “When lives are on the line, having people like this step up—it’s everything,” said DA Patsy Austin-Gatson. We’ll be right back. Break 3: Sugar Hill Ice Skating Rink Final STORY 6: GCPS announces 2026 graduation schedule Gwinnett County Public Schools just dropped the 2026 graduation schedule, and it’s a mix of tradition and big arena vibes. Phoenix High kicks things off on May 14 at Lawrenceville Lawn, while Duluth and Discovery close it out on Memorial Day, May 25, at Gas South Arena. Most schools will stick with Gas South Arena for their ceremonies, but a few—like Central Gwinnett, Brookwood, Parkview, and Mill Creek—are keeping it old-school with graduations at their home stadiums. STORY 7: Gwinnett's tag offices moving to new hours of operation in 2026 Starting in 2026, Gwinnett’s tag offices are trimming their hours—closing 30 minutes to an hour earlier each day. Beginning Jan. 1, offices will run from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Right now, they stay open until 5:30 p.m. most days and 6 p.m. on Wednesdays. Why the change? Tax Commissioner Denise Mitchell pointed to the growing use of self-service kiosks—16 in total, with three available 24/7. “We want to make things easier,” she said. Oh, and heads up: all tag offices, the main office, and the call center will close at noon on Dec. 5 for system updates. Back to normal Dec. 8. Park City researcher John Berry claims he's mapped an ancient energy machine—mountains as conductors, basins as parabolic amplifiers—tapping the planet's hidden power. Filed in Utah's Fourth District Court to etch his discovery into history, Berry links this template to Mormon temples, Masonic mines, Tesla's lost truths, even UAPs and cattle mutilations. Coincidence or erased civilization? GUEST: Gib Berry is an independent researcher and Park City native who traded ski slopes for satellite maps to chase a radical theory: Utah's Wasatch Range conceals a pre-Egyptian energy grid modeled on the Great Pyramid. Using GIS overlays, he's documented alignments between ancient geometry, Mormon temples, historic mines, and modern military sites—then filed the evidence in Utah's Fourth District Court to bypass gatekeepers. A former outdoorsman turned citizen scientist, Berry warns this “machine made of mountains” may explain everything from ghost lights to UAP hotspots, urging skeptics to overlay the data themselves and feel the grid pulse beneath their feet. Today is a conversation between a pastor and a farmer. What might working the land, protecting local economies, and nurturing Christian communities have in common? We'll be speaking with Mary Berry, executive director of the Berry Center, and daughter of poet, farmer, and essayist Wendell Berry. My fellow interviewer today is the Rev. Clint Wilson, rector of St. Francis in the Fields, Harrods Creek, KY, not far from the Berry Center. We talk about joy of hard work, and hard work that is good work. Growing up with Wendell Berry as a dad. Faith and farming. Decisions to live with or against a given landscape. What is home? How do you make a home and dedicate yourself to it? The thick fabric of a place, and how work might be interwoven with neighbors, family, and seasons. What does it mean to actually "Love your neighbor as yourself"? We'll also touch on special challenges the suburbs pose to meaningful life together.Mary Berry, Executive Director of The Berry Center, grew up at Lanes Landing Farm in Henry County, KY. She has farmed for a living in Henry County, and started The Berry Center in 2011 to continue the agricultural work of John Berry, Sr. and his sons, author Wendell Berry and former Kentucky state senator, the late John M. Berry, Jr. The Berry Center focuses on issues confronting small farming families in Kentucky and around the country.Hear Mary speak at the Living Church conferenceLearn more about the Berry Center or Home Place MeatGive to support this podcast

Welcome back to the Woody Allen Retrospective Podcast for another episode of Woody Allen Adjacent—the first one of 2025!   First of all, thank you for rocking with us for another year. We GREATLY appreciate our lovely listeners, loyal subscribers, and thoughtful supporters!   For those who don't know, in Woody Allen Adjacent, our podcast hosts work their way through films they like to compare and contrast with Woody Allen's filmography and/or writing style.   Recently, Donald has charged the AI Assistant of the show to dig even deeper and generate a wider list of interesting Adjacent movies—some of which may feel a little ‘out of the norm,' so to speak.   As we rotate our turns for Adjacent every month, we're slowly working our way through a fascinating list of films. We've already covered quite a few at this point, some obvious, some not so.   For the AI's turn this month, it has chosen Claudine (1974), a touching romantic dramedy starring Diahann Carroll and James Earl Jones. Set in Harlem, Claudine offers a heartfelt yet sharp critique of the welfare system, family dynamics, and love in a time of financial struggle. While it arrived during the height of the Blaxploitation era, Claudine took a more grounded and human approach, telling a personal and deeply affecting story.   Incidentally, Claudine has a loose connection to Woody Allen via James Earl Jones, who later starred in The Comedians (1974), a film featuring Richard Burton, who worked with Woody Allen in Stardust Memories (1980)—a bit of trivia for those who like to make those six degrees of separation-style links!   So, join us for this deep dive into a film that may not be an obvious Woody Adjacent pick but certainly deserves its place in the discussion.   - Links Mentioned in This Episode -   Please check out the links below for the full cast, user reviews, ratings, and any additional information you may find interesting:   Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claudine_(film)   IMDb: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071334/   Rotten Tomatoes: https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/claudine   A VERY Special Thanks to The Woody Allen Pages Website & The Woody Allen Subreddit for their continued support and info—check them out for the latest from the Woody Allen Fan Community!   https://www.woodyallenpages.com & https://www.reddit.com/r/woodyallen   PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT on this or any other episode using our comment section video link here >>> https://bit.ly/warpcom   If you like the show, please consider buying us a coffee / giving us a tip via our Patreon campaign >>> https://www.patreon.com/woodyretro   Thanks for listening as always! When you listen to John Berry, the word that immediately comes to my mind is "intimate." Today, we connect with John to chat in advance of his show at Rams Head On Stage in Annapolis on July 24th. This proud Grandfather of two has been a fixture in the country (and gospel) scene since his first album in 1979. In a few months , he's headed out on the 27th Annual Christmas Tour, but before that we chat. We talked about what to expect when John and his wife take the stage, his career, and a few medical setbacks along the way. We're in for a treat at Rams Hoead On Stage, but for now... Have a listen! On today's episode, I talk to musician Jeff Martin. Originally from Los Angeles, CA, Jeff started playing piano when he was but a mere toddler. In 1992, he formed the band Idaho with his high school friend John Berry, though Berry would leave a few years later, making Idaho primarily Jeff's project. The band first signed to Caroline, who released their first three albums and an EP, but with their breakthrough album in 2000, Hearts of Palm, they began releasing music on their own Idaho Music label. And their latest, Lapse, will be released at the end of May. This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on Apple Podcasts, follow me on Twitter.
